AN INTRODUCTION TO
EXCEL - 2007
UNDERSTANDING EXCEL
 Its a part of MS Office package.
 It’s a spreadsheet program, allows you to
perform calculations using formula and
functions and plot charts on the data you
have entered.
CALCULATIONS ARE:
 Daily wages:
 Runs scored by players.
 The money spent or
saved by you.
 The marks scored by
you in a test.
ADVANTAGES
1) Entering data is fast
2) Making a change is simple
3) Formulas automatically recalculate the
results when the data value changes.
Calculations are easy and accurate.
4) Large amounts of data can be handled easily.
5) Data can be presented graphically through
various charts.
To open Excel,
click the Start button,
point to All Programs,
point to Microsoft Office, and then
click Microsoft Office Excel 2007.

 RIBBON HAS SEVERALTABS.
 HOMETAB, INSERTTAB, PAGELAYOUTTAB.
 EACHTABSARE FURTHER DIVIDED INTO
GROUPS.
 HOMETAB IS DIVIDED INTO7 GROUPS I.E.
Clipboard, font, alignment, number,
styles, cells and editing.
Insert tab
 Insert tab is divided into 5 groups:
 Tables, picture, chart, text, clip art and shapes
in the excel sheet.
GALLERIES
 Its used for making formatting changes to the
excel sheets.
PREVIEW, WORKBOOK, WORKSHEET
 Live preview allows you to preview what a given
gallery command will do to your excel sheet,
without actually changing it.
 WORKBOOK:
 An excel document is called a workbook.
 It has multiple pages called sheets.That bare
called work sheets.
 It represents the working area on the screen,
where the data is entered and calculations are
performed. Its divided in to rows and columns
ROWS AND COLUMNS
 The work sheet is made up of millions of
rows and thousands of columns.
 The rows are numbered from top to bottom
and numbered 1- 1048576. these are called
row headers.
 The columns are labeled from left to right and
are named A,B….XFD.
 These are called column header
CELL
 The intersection or
crossing of a column
and a row is called a
cell.
 Eg: the cell A1 is the
intersection of column
A and row 3.
Cell
CELL ADDRESS
 The cell address
corresponds to the
column name and the
row name.
 Each cell has the
unique address
 For e.g.: B3, B10, K14.

 It is located above the
work area of the
spreadsheet.
 It display the data or
formula stored in the
active cell.
 It can be used to enter
or edit a formula, a
function or data in a
