Chapter 1: Lesson 1:
What are the structures
of plant and animals
cells?
Grade 5
Any living thing is
called
Living
Organism
What is our school made of?
Bricks
(Are the smallest building unit that make up our school)
Also, Our bodies are made of:
Systems Organs
TissuesCells
Which is
made of
Which is
made of
Which is
made of
(The smallest
building unit of our
body)
What do cells do?
Cells help us:
1) Grow
2) Breathe
3) Move
4) Reproduce (make more of its kind)
5) Excrete (remove wastes from their
bodies)
6) Respond to stimulus (feel the weather
changes)
7) Feed
Smallest unit of living things
that can carry out the basic
processes of life.
Cells
Cells
Unicellular
(Organisms made
of only one cell)
Multicellular
(Organisms made
of many cells)
Plant Cell organelle functions
1) Cell Wall
- Stiff structure
outside the cell
membrane.
- It provides the cell
with strength and
extra support.
2) Cell membrane
- Controls what
materials enter the
cell and what
materials leave the
cell.
(It’s like the gate of the cell)
3) Cytoplasm
- Gel like liquid
mostly made of
water.
- It fills the area
between the cell
membrane and
nucleus (organelles
float in it). (It’s clear, thick &
jelly like substance)
4) Nucleus
- Controls all the cell
functions (the brain
of the cell).
(It acts like our brain that
control every job we do)
5) Vacuole
- 1 large central
vacuole used for
storing excess water
and providing extra
support to the plant.
(It acts like store house that
stores water, food & excess
wastes of the cell)
(i.e: It’s like our lunch box)
6) Mitochondria
- Oval, membrane
covered organelle
that breaks down
food to give energy to
the cell (power
plant).
(It acts like the power house
or power factory that gives
energy to the cell)
7) Chloroplast
- A green structure
where energy from
the sunlight is used
to make the plants
food. (Contains
chlorophyll)
Animal Cells
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
Vacuole
Mitochondrion
Animal Cell organelle functions
1) Cell membrane
- Give the cell its
shape.
- Controls what
materials enter the
cell and what
materials leave the
cell.
2) Cytoplasm
- Gel like liquid mostly
made of water.
- It fills the area between
the cell membrane and
nucleus (organelles float
in it).
- Some of the life
processes take place in
it.
3) Nucleus
- Controls all the cell
functions (the brain of
the cell).
4) Vacuole
- A membrane covered
structure used for
storage (stores food,
water and wastes).
- Some animal cells have
many small vacuoles and
some do not have
vacuoles.
5) Mitochondria
- Oval, membrane
covered organelle that
breaks down food to give
energy to the cell (power
plant).
- Animal cells that need
more energy (ex. muscle
cells) have many
mitochondria.

Ch.1.less.1. what are the structures of plant and animals cells

  • 1. Chapter 1: Lesson 1: What are the structures of plant and animals cells? Grade 5
  • 2. Any living thing is called Living Organism
  • 3.
  • 4. What is our school made of?
  • 5. Bricks (Are the smallest building unit that make up our school)
  • 6. Also, Our bodies are made of: Systems Organs TissuesCells Which is made of Which is made of Which is made of (The smallest building unit of our body)
  • 7. What do cells do? Cells help us: 1) Grow 2) Breathe 3) Move 4) Reproduce (make more of its kind) 5) Excrete (remove wastes from their bodies) 6) Respond to stimulus (feel the weather changes) 7) Feed
  • 8. Smallest unit of living things that can carry out the basic processes of life. Cells
  • 9. Cells Unicellular (Organisms made of only one cell) Multicellular (Organisms made of many cells)
  • 10. Plant Cell organelle functions 1) Cell Wall - Stiff structure outside the cell membrane. - It provides the cell with strength and extra support.
  • 11. 2) Cell membrane - Controls what materials enter the cell and what materials leave the cell. (It’s like the gate of the cell)
  • 12. 3) Cytoplasm - Gel like liquid mostly made of water. - It fills the area between the cell membrane and nucleus (organelles float in it). (It’s clear, thick & jelly like substance)
  • 13. 4) Nucleus - Controls all the cell functions (the brain of the cell). (It acts like our brain that control every job we do)
  • 14. 5) Vacuole - 1 large central vacuole used for storing excess water and providing extra support to the plant. (It acts like store house that stores water, food & excess wastes of the cell) (i.e: It’s like our lunch box)
  • 15. 6) Mitochondria - Oval, membrane covered organelle that breaks down food to give energy to the cell (power plant). (It acts like the power house or power factory that gives energy to the cell)
  • 16. 7) Chloroplast - A green structure where energy from the sunlight is used to make the plants food. (Contains chlorophyll)
  • 18. Animal Cell organelle functions 1) Cell membrane - Give the cell its shape. - Controls what materials enter the cell and what materials leave the cell.
  • 19. 2) Cytoplasm - Gel like liquid mostly made of water. - It fills the area between the cell membrane and nucleus (organelles float in it). - Some of the life processes take place in it.
  • 20. 3) Nucleus - Controls all the cell functions (the brain of the cell).
  • 21. 4) Vacuole - A membrane covered structure used for storage (stores food, water and wastes). - Some animal cells have many small vacuoles and some do not have vacuoles.
  • 22. 5) Mitochondria - Oval, membrane covered organelle that breaks down food to give energy to the cell (power plant). - Animal cells that need more energy (ex. muscle cells) have many mitochondria.
