2. What is a cell?
All plants and animals are made up
of cells.
Cells are the basic unit of all living
things.
They perform three vital functions.

4. Cell Membrane-
Holds the cell together and lets
substances pass in and out of
the cell.

5. Cell Wall-
Found mainly in plant cells
but not in animal cells. It
gives a rigid shape to the cell
and protect it.

6. Chloroplasts-
Are organelles found mainly in
plant cells. They contain
chlorophyll, a chemical that
allows plants to store solar
energy.

7. Cytoplasm-
Watery inside of a cell.
Many materials are
dissolved or suspended in
the cytoplasm. Various
organelles are found in the
cytoplasm.

8. Nucleus-
Controls the cells activities and
functions, such as
reproduction.

9. Vacuoles-
They contain water
and minerals, which
the organism needs in
order to grow.

10. Some organisms, such as
Paramecium, have only one
cell. These are called
unicellular organisms.
In a unicellular organism, the
single cell performs all three
vital functions.

11. Other organisms,such as birds,
are made up of many cells.
They are called multicellular
organisms. In a multicellular
organism, the different cells
carry out different functions.
