Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders resulting from non-progressive brain damage early in development. It has an incidence of 2 per 1000 live births. Common causal factors include prematurity, perinatal anoxia, kernicterus, post-natal brain infection, and post-natal injury. Symptoms may include delayed development of motor skills, stiff movements, difficulty sucking or swallowing, and spasticity. Treatment options include medications to control seizures and hyperactivity, physiotherapy, splinting, botulinum toxin injections to reduce muscle tone, and surgery to correct deformities.
