According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity effects more than 9
million children and teenagers between the ages of 6 19 in the United States with another 8 million
considered at risk of becoming obese. These staggering figures have cause groups to form all across
the country and organize their efforts to prevent this disease. One such organization is the Leadership
for Healthy Communities, which is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
(RWJF). The RWJF holds summits nationwide events calling on policy leaders nationwide to advance
healthy eating and active living options in their communities. According to the RWJF, a special
emphasis has been placed on collaborative state and community policy approaches that address
childhood obesity among vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the epidemic. The
RWJF also has a panel, which consists of its chairmen, doctors, lawyers, but more importantly
politicians on the state and federal level who are taking childhood obesity head on and working with
organizations like the RWJF to promote healthy, cost effective change in communities nationwide.

A Romanticized View Of Their Ancestors
In southern fiction there are many characters to be found that possess heroic, or idealized, views of
their ancestors. These same characters are often times burdened by, or feel responsible for, the legacy
left behind by their families. The ancestor s beliefs are like ghost constantly haunting characters in
southern literature. Fennell aptly quotes Faulkner in her article writing:
No man is himself, he is the sum of his past. There is no such things really as was because the past is.
It is part of every man, every woman, and every moment. All of his or her ancestry, background, is all
a part of himself and herself at any moment. And so a man, a character in a story at any moment of
action is not just himself as he is then, he is all that made him. (Fennell 37)
It is seemingly impossible to separate the past from the present among characters in southern
literature. In this paper I will examine three characters and their romanticized view of their ancestors,
as well as their burden. I will be considering Gail Hightower and Joanna Burden in William Faulkner s
Light in August, and Cheyenne Cotterell in Tiya Miles The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens
Ghosts. All three of these characters idealize their ancestors while simultaneously feeling burdened as
a result of it.
In Faulkner s Light in August Gail Hightower, an outcast reverend, is heavily burdened by his father
and grandfather. He lives within the past and seems to have no care for the present or future.

The Roman republic had set a specific set of laws that each person was suppose to abide by. These set
of laws were known as the Twelve Tables. After reading the selections from the Twelve Tables, I
gather that the Roman society was very strict and harsh, and its conception of justice was more based
on punishment than it was on negotiating the situation and coming to a clear resolution. The Romans
were more blunt with their punishments, they saw black and white , no grey area when making
decisions in court, which means that everything was a yes or no, no one person had the opportunity to
talk about any of their crimes, it was straight to punishment, or if they were found to be not guilty then

because no one should be killed just because of the way that they look, especially if they were born

When diagnosing schizophrenia there are three different types of symptoms: positive, negative, and

Kangaroo care and active involvement in the infant s care gave parents a sense of control that
strengthened their motivation to be with their infant. This helped when the environment was calm and
private. Access to single care rooms/family rooms in the NICU enhances parents opportunities for
being involved with their child. This study was conducted in a level 3 NICU at a Swedish,
regional/university level 3 hospital. The NICU guidelines and procedures were designed to prevent
unnecessary parent infant separation and support attachment/bonding between infants and their
parents. The NICU has nine family rooms where parents can room with their infant during their
hospital stay and provide for their infant s care, with support from the staff. A convenience sample of
mothers and fathers of extremely preterm infants (born at a gestational stage (GA) of 27 weeks or less)
who received care in the NICU were recruited.
Seven couples were invited to participate in the study. One father declined participation; therefore,
seven mothers and six fathers participated. One couple had twins. The infants were born at twenty
three weeks and five days to twenty seven weeks and 6 days gestational age, with birth weights
ranging between 492 and 1044 grams. All of whom required ventilator support, for different periods of
times. The parents were interviewed at least one week after the infants were transferred from an
intensive care room to another type of room

Cultural fiction Cultural fiction posits that ideas about middle adulthood are created by cultures.
Different cultures have varying views in the ways they recognize and understand middle adulthood
(Hutchison, 2015). In the United States, middle adulthood is often viewed through 2 cultural lenses.
The first sees mid life as a positive time in which an individual has accrued resources and coping
mechanisms. The second view of middle adulthood is a negative over the hill perspective, in which
this stage is viewed as a time of loss and decline (Hutchison, 2015). These differing views of losses
and gains in middle adulthood can be seen in the dynamic between Harvey Milk, and his adversary
(and murderer) Dan White. Harvey, throughout the film, accumulates as many resources as he can and
makes strides in his cause to gain justice for the gay community. Middle adulthood, for Milk, was
truly the prime of his life. His political opponent, Dan White, however, experienced a series of losses,

Many researchers are interested in depth perception and how different cues affect what is seen. There
have been lots of studies done around depth perception. Some have done studies on how different cues
affect binocular and monocular vision in depth perception (Reinhardt Rutland, 1996). Others have
studied how depth cues are used in tasks like computer and video based tasks (Westerman Cribbin,
1998).
Visual depth perception is using cues to perceive the world in three dimensions and the distance of
objects. There are many cues to help with depth perception. They can be categorised in either
binocular vision (two eyes) or monocular vision (one eye). Binocular only has physiological cues
(retinal disparity and convergence). Monocular has physiological cues (accommodation and motion
parallax) and pictorial cues (interposition, elevation, texture, linear perspective, shading, aerial
perspective, and familiar and relative size). Pictorial cues can be in two dimensions and doesn t need
motion (Westerman Cribbin, 1998) whereas the other three (binocular, monocular and physiological)
use motion and three dimensions. Monocular vision comes from changes of each eye connecting to
distance. The most importance is accommodation. This is the change of lens curves needed to
