Publicizing Information in Propaganda Techniques
Propaganda Techniques
Propaganda refers to any form of misleading information that meant to publicize a particular product,
a service or an event. It is applicable in many and varied situations for different reasons to
communicate to audiences. An unformed judgment would view propaganda as a technique applicable
only in politics for posing unfair competition (Gardner). However, the contemporary business
environment has recently advanced and perfected the use of propaganda in its numerous forms. The
major propaganda techniques include assertion, bandwagon, card stacking, glittering generalities,
lesser of two evils, name calling, pinpointing the enemy, plain folks, simplification, transfer and
testimonials (Conserva).
The current day advertising techniques is widely employ propaganda to gain an extra advantage in
popularizing products and edging out competitors. Testimonial technique is one of the widely applied
approaches to advertising of goods and services (Shabo). Testimonials are the endorsement or
quotations that connect highly popular or respected people with certain products or services.
Testimonials are a form of transfer technique that usually incorrectly connects a personality with a
product. The use of this propaganda technique usually attracts individuals into embracing the
advertised brand having made an incorrect judgment.
Propaganda is popularly used in consumer goods commercials by the way of associating famous and
highly reputed people in the society to

Abdul Kay s Fraud Story
Once upon a time, during the peak of the Great Depression, there was a poor man named Al Jones
who spent his days stealing what he needed off the streets of Manhattan. Across town, in a luxury
penthouse suite, lived a woman named Jasmine (Jaz for short), the daughter of the wealthy socialite,
John D. Rockefeller Jr. John had a trusted adviser named Jerry, but little to John s knowledge, he was
a member of a ruthless body of criminals, also known as the Mafia. One day, Al was out trying to steal
bread when he ran into Jaz, who was looking through the newspapers at an outdoor concession stand.
He wasn t sure who she was at the time, but she looked oddly familiar. Jaz was looking through the

genie who has to live in that pocket watch instead of you! Eugene snapped his fingers and held up the

be accidentally touched again. Phew, now that that s over, Jaz, I m so sorry for lying to you. I know I
should have told you the truth, I just knew you and your father wouldn t have approved of me. You
know, without any money to my name. You don t know that! You didn t even try to tell us the truth!
Jaz screamed at Al, and then ran out the door of the courthouse. Jaz continued to run all the way to the
building her and Al had gone to on their first date. She went up to the roof and started to cry profusely.
After she got back to her senses, she started to think about how kind he had been to her during their
first encounter. She also thought about how sweet he was when he had already gained her father s
approval and didn t need to be. This made her realize that she could forgive his lies and love him for

Prosperity for the Spaniards in the New Wold was the...
It is hard to believe that even the Spaniards imagined that one journey in 1492 will change theirs and
world s history so dramatically. The moment that Spanish foot stepped on American soil started years
of prosperity and glory for the Spanish empire but at the cost of the destruction of American societies.
The encounter with the new world was controversial historical moment that created one united history
instead of two world histories. The discovery led many Spaniards to the new world with the intention
of settling the lands but eventually this was the start of devastating of cultures, human populations and
traditions. Using power and coercion they spread fear and destruction in the aim of gaining wealth,

He tells about the most humble, patient, and peaceable people he saw in his life. People that are so
eager to know the more that if they will brought to know the one true god they would be the most

Barbarous, uncultivated and inhumane descriptions of the indigenous by previous Spaniards. He also
describes the horrors the Spaniards did in the new world. His main example is the island Hispaniola.
He observes how the Spaniards started their first ravages and oppressions in the island. The Spaniards
killed, tortured, and destroyed the native people with the most varied methods of cruelty. He tells how
they dealt with the chieftains that rebelled they hanged them when their feet almost touched the
ground in groups of thirteen (as Jesus and his apostles) and set burning wood underneath them burning
them alive. To date, these shocking acts reverberate around the world as example of the Spaniards. But
obviously Casas s stance was opposite to the Spaniards. The Spaniards saw themselves as rescuers of
those barbarian natives . They saw themselves as the greatest nation that came to the new world to
save those indigenous from their kings and devilish beliefs ant that their only goal was to spread the
Catholic faith through the indigenous people. So why the spreading of the Pure Christianity included

The Good Earth Essay
A person s identity is a mask on their lives; underneath that mask lies the unadulterated version of a
human s existence all people go through similar tragedies, deal with the same emotions, and are in a
constant pursuit of happiness and success. As The New York Times puts it, the novel The Good Earth
by Pearl S. Buck is a comment upon the meaning and tragedy of life as it is lived in any age in any
quarter of the globe. Set in the early twentieth century in rural China, this story follows the life of the
poor farmer Wang Lung and his family. During Wang Lung s search for prosperity, several mishaps
blocks his way to what he wants most. The struggles Wang Lung face, the ups and downs in his
tumultuous life, and ultimately, Wang Lung s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
O Lan is a quiet, submissive woman, but she is largely responsible for the survival of her family. In
the beginning of the novel, Wang Lung simply thinks that she is a good wife, but once he becomes
wealthy and idle as a result of that he begins to think of her as a dull and common creature without
any beauty. He feels bitter towards her, and takes in the beautiful concubine, Lotus. However, once O
Lan falls terminally ill, he begins to treat her with more respect, knowing that her death was imminent.
After her death, Wang Lung finally acknowledges that O Lan was a unique woman. Certain events
trigger flashbacks of the things O Lan did that made her special. A common tragedy in life is losing
someone close, and taking their existence for granted until their death. Wang Lung s loss of O Lan
reflects how one does not see the true value of something until it is too

Qualities of Sports Leaders
Qualities of sports leaders
The four different qualities I will be talking about are decision making, evaluation, communication
and also talking about managing a group. After I explained theses I will then relate them to an
effective sports leader.
An effective sports leader needs to make decisions in long term and short term parts. They need to
consider what to do and why. Making good decisions will come through good experience of having to
make big decisions either within a game or outside. Decision making means a sports leader makes a
choice of what to do to help his own team out.
A good sports leader will take the time to evaluate their own performance or other participants.
Evaluating their own performance helps them to see their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Effective management in your participants will result in getting the best out of them.
My sports leader I have suggested is Steven Gerrard. He has all these qualities and is a very successful
leader by being captain of Liverpool Football Club and also England. Being this well known he must
have a very good attitude and is looked upon as a role model for many people. His decision making is
brilliant as he makes decisions to make key passes within games that lead his team to victory. He has
years of experience to know what decisions are needed to be made. As he is captain for Liverpool he
needs to evaluate each players performance and give them feedback either when he can during a game
or at the end of games. This will push players on as he is seen as one of the best footballers in the
world people will listen to him. He has good communication levels as he talks to his team constantly
to give them advice either to say well done or mark players or even step up the game etc. having this
communication allows his team to have time to no what to do if they have time on the ball. This is one
of the most important qualities within football. Every game and every training session he has to lead
players and even manage players abilities. When he s on the pitch he s managing his team by telling
what to do and making key passes etc.

Explication of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Essay
Explication of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
When reading The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost, I found that it was personal, especially to the
author. The fact that it was written in first person form helped me to conclude that it was probably
about the author. I think the reasoning behind his writing of this poem was because in life, you have
many obstacles to overcome and many choices and decisions to make, which opens a path that leads
the way to your future. Since those things relate to Frost, I think it motivated him to write this poem
on a personal basis, like a short autobiography on his life. It motivated him because he could then tell
others about his life and give advice and guidance to the people that read his ... Show more content on

The thing that always holds true though, is that the major issues people s lives are always ironically
similar to each other or, at least can relate to them in many ways. Therefore, I found that this poem not
only symbolizes or relates to the author, but it also symbolizes or holds true to almost everybody s
lives.
One of the major symbols within this poem is the roads. When he says Two roads diverged in a yellow
wood, he is using the roads to symbolize the paths, choices, and decisions that he has to make in his
life. Those decisions guide the way to his future, because when you come to a two way street or road
you have to decide or make a choice on which path to take. Also when he says And sorry I could not
travel both And be on traveler, he is telling us how he is insecure on which road to take because he is
unsure of what s ahead and would like to travel both roads to come up with a conclusion or a decision
on the correct road to take. So overall, what road basically symbolizes in this poem is the options that
he has in his life and the decisions that he has to make.
Another symbol in this poem is the many observations that he makes. When he says long I stood And
looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth, he is using his observations to
symbolize the brainstorming, analyzing, and thinking you have to do before or ahead of time when
you are offered two options in your life and only one path to take.

There are many sports in the Olympics and Bobsledding is one of them. The goal of the event is to be

Essay Disadvantages Of Leaving Home
Traveling abroad this holidays? Or may be looking around for the most awaited business meet
overseas? Well, there s lot to do before heading off to your destination, one of the most important to
do items is to make sure your phone works internationally. After all, those phone calls, photo uploads,
emails, maps, or the travel guide need a reliable connection. No, leaving the phone safely at home is
not an option here. But, how to ensure you stay connected abroad without breaking the bank? Here are
few tips,

Okay, so first thing first. Many phones are originally sold with a lock on its software, which means it
may not work with a new SIM card from another country installed. Unlocked phone means you can
use a cheaper SIM card to stay connected.
So, make sure your GSM phone is unlocked.
If you don t know if your phone is locked you can:
ask your operator, or
try and place another SIM in your phone and see if it recognizes the other operator network, or
Use one of the many sites on the web where you can get your phone unlocked quickly for a few
bucks. You just need to share your phone s IMEI ( International Mobile Equipment Identity number), a
unique 14 16 digit number that identifies your phone and follow few simple easy steps to get it

Religion In Colonial Philadelphia
Based on the physical evidence found on the tour of Philadelphia, we can draw that colonial
Philadelphians valued religion greatly, they had advanced architecture and infrastructure, and they
carried out very modest attitudes. Some of the most historical figures came from and benefitted the
city of Philadelphia including Benjamin Franklin and Andrew Hamilton. In Philadelphia during the
eighteenth century, faith was the top priority for most of the city s population. There were many
Quakers inhabiting Philadelphia at the time. The first legal Catholic Church was established in the
colonial city in 1773. The first stop on the tour and a very important colonial landmark was the Christ
Church in Philadelphia. The Christ Church was the tallest building in British North America in 1776.
Some of the most important historical figures were memorialized at the church such as Andrew
Hamilton, who was responsible for establishing freedom of the press in America. At that time,
practicing Catholicism was frowned upon and people were killed for doing so. Another landmark
visited on the tour was Old Saint Joseph s Church. Old Saint Joseph s Church was the only place in

Pros And Cons Of A Dystopian Society
Many of us focus on trying to see the positive side of things, but the truth is that sometimes we need to
open our eyes, and notice the negative activities surrounding our world. Once we comprehend what is
negatively affecting our world, then we should find a way to fix it, and shape the world. Finally, after
we have done all of that, then maybe we can have a better world, but having a utopian society just
seems way out of our reach. A dystopian society, just like the one in the novel divergent, definetely is

Flipping The Standards Of The Classroom
Flipping The Standards The human mind is constantly learning and absorbing knowledge from
different experiences throughout life. People understand and learn in different ways and paces,
including education because there is a variety of ways students can interpret what is being taught. The

experience in a modern day classroom. The flipped classroom allows the teacher to give their lessons

students are able to grasp the concept easily and effectively ( A Teaching Innovation ) (Schmidt).
While vastly different to traditional schooling, the flipped classroom is an innovation that benefit can
every student throughout school. The flipped classroom can be beneficial as they help students work
at their own leisure and help give students a better understanding without disrupting the class. With
the information in class readily available at home, the students can look over and analyze the lesson
and get their own interpretation of the information. If they have any questions, they can simply ask
their teacher when they are given the assignment in class. Since the teacher will not be giving a lecture
in the actual classroom, he or she will be available to answer questions students may have about the
information they received at home (Schmidt). The students have more time to analyze that data and
get their own interpretation of the information thus giving a better understanding of the information as
a whole. Another reason why the flipped classroom can help is the improved interaction between
student and teacher. In the typical classroom, students

The local welfare employees were actually the ones who chose which families were eligible. Perhaps
the problems began there. There were no requirements except for the employees thinking that the
families had minimal skills and could figure it out for themselves. Once chosen the families had to
decide very quickly if they would be making the move. Due to the short season for farming and
building, some families had only days to decide. The following were the guidelines for choosing a
family.
As far as possible, families should be selected first on their farming ability and secondly, those who
may have secondary skills and who may adjust themselves to a diversified farming activity and can
assist with carpentry on their homes and then those who may know something about machinery and
blacksmithing and who have leadership qualities. (Lundberg, 1998)

Research Paper On Rolex-Panerai
In a chest drawers found at the home of his late father, Cheshire man uncovered a watch that he had
never seen before. It was a clock that only 618 others were made from. They sold for around £500, or
that is what he expected, but when the auctioneer told him that the sale price had reached three time
higher than that, the man was left dumbstruck. What was the watch found? It was a Rolex Panerai that
they issued exclusively to divers of the Royal Italian Navy. Such as watch came from a humble
purchase at a car boot sale that cost £10, but it sold for over £55,000 because of the rarity of this Rolex
that they issued to the Italian navy divers during World War II. When clearing the drawers of his father
s house, the Cheshire man felt shock as what he had discovered especially at the final sale price.
Panerai, an Italian company, made these watches while collaborating with Rolex s movement. It is a
somewhat over sized wristwatch, but what is interesting is that it sold for £55,000 without a strap, and
it had a non functioning mechanism. Imagine what price that watch could have fetched if it had been
fully functioning. It still managed to attract enough interest that it sold for £46,000. However, when
you add all the fees, the total price at the end was around £55,660. ... Show more content on

Interpersonal Communications During The Movie Steel Magnolias
Interpersonal Communication is a very important ingredient in making strong, healthy relationships.
Communicating is how we get a better understanding of one another s perception of things, as well as
how we help someone to better understand ours. We need to express our feelings in relationships and
know that they are reciprocated. Not communicating leads to problems and misunderstandings. People

Perception is the process of seeing the world through your own eyes by utilizing your own personal

life goes on, as long as we have a family and friends, and a strong communication system, we can

How Does Oprah s Decision To Open Her Academy
I am not in support of Oprah s decision to open her academy because it does not functionally mimic
the environment the girls were brought up in and therefore, cannot educate the girls appropriately for
economic and political life in South Africa. Oprah s Dream Academy for Girls is a lavish and modern,
something fit for people able to afford a boarding school education. The theory of functionalism states
that schools are seen to adapt students to the economic, political, and social institutions of its society.
The government did not support funding the academy, offering that only the basics are needed to
create a learning environment, which Oprah rejected. She privatized the academy and invested
millions of dollars in luxuries and special accommodations. The society the girls live in is one where
majority of citizens are under the poverty line. The academy also caters to girls who are economically
disadvantaged. When they attend the academy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Political socialization places a person s political loyalty in the government if the government is seen to
have acceptance by the people, good will, and power to make changes. South Africa s government
lack of support in their own public school system demonstrates that they do not have the power to
make changes in society. In return, they cannot gain the citizen s political loyalty since they cannot
meet parts of the criteria. Oprah s Dream Academy has the intention of good will and fits part of the
criteria. If her academy takes some of people s acceptance, it could disrupt the function of being a
political institution of its society by taking trust out of the government. Since she had the power to
create change, the girls attending her academy could lose faith on a national level of government. This

The s First Appearance On The Show Meyer Lansky
In his first appearance on the show Meyer Lansky gives a very earnst and well worded but fake
business proposal, forces someone to shake his hand (and thus acknowledge him) and muses on the
future importance of the petrol industry, all of which allow for a good character defining moment. His
main motivation and driving force through out the series is his own ambition to gain money, power
and respect. While it s not not hard to connect this ambition to a childhood of poverty and ethnic
oppression, it goes even deeper than that: in 1931 Lansky has achieved more than he could have
dreamed of as a child and yet still looks to take even more Atlantic City, the Commission, etc. etc.

Essay On Computer Advantages And Disadvantages
When building a computer, there will be some challenges you might have to face in gathering
information, assembling a computer, and supporting the system after assembly. While on the other
hand, it can be difficult to choose what computer you should buy. The difference of buying and
building a computer comes down to personal wants, but there are disadvantages and advantages for
both options.
The challenges you would face when building a computer can sometimes seem overwhelming. As you
are gathering information, you have to make sure that everything is compatible with each other. You
can t go out and buy a motherboard, only to discover that one of your other parts doesn t fit the right
requirements. You also need to spend a good deal of time researching what you want, so to make sure
that things work together. When assembling the computer, you have to worry about being gentle with
your hardware. You have got to make sure that you keep yourself static free as well because if you do
not ground yourself while in the building process, you could cause damage to your components. One
way to avoid this is to not wear wool or rub your socks on the carpet; This helps to prevent a build up
of static electricity, and you could always buy an antistatic wrist strap. By building a computer, you
will have to fix the problem if anything goes wrong. This can be a challenge since you have different
components from different companies. If you don t know what you re doing, you will have to pay for
those damages; You can t get much help from one company to try to repair your computer either.
Another challenge you face in building a computer, is that you have control over what goes into the
computer. This can be a challenge since there is such a large variety of components to choose from,
with prices being different, and the parts having different performances. At the same time, this just
adds to the idea of full customization for the customer. So the 3 big cons are; You are responsible for
fixing a damaged part, You have to make sure everything is compatible with each other, and it could
be sometimes possible you will have to spend more money to get the things that you want
performance wise. The 3 big pros are; You get full

But if he had visited ten years ago, it might have been closer to 50 cents. As India has become more
productive over the last few decades, wages in the tradable sector (IT) rose, pulling up wages in the
nontradable sector (waiters), and the currency has appreciated. There is a still a major price difference
D.C. and Delhi. One dollar will pay for much less stuff in America than its equivalent in rupees will
buy in India. But as Indian exports continue to grow, one should expect Shyam s lunch to get more
and more expensive.
There is much more to price levels than the Nanny Effect. Much, much, much more. Restrictive urban
policy raises the price of rent in similarly productive cities. Energy policies and levies raise or lower
the price of gas. Tariffs raise the price of imports. On a nation by nation basis, taxes restrain demand
and subsidies increase supply on an idiosyncratic basis.
But perhaps the easiest way to mess with Balassa and Samuelson is for a government to manipulate
foreign exchange rates. China, for example, is famous for pegging its currency to the U.S. dollar to
make its exports more competitive. As a result, services in China are probably cheaper than they

The Boxer Rebellion In China From 1898-1900
The Boxer Rebellion in China took place roughly from 1898 to 1900 and is known for being an anti
foreign and anti Christian movement. China s Qing regime, also found itself at odds with the Boxer
movement due to their weak control and susceptibility to foreign influence. 1 The insurgency that
erupted throughout parts of the country focused on these three main components, however these were
not their fundamental concerns. Climate variables within lower north and east China, such as drought
and flooding, were the underlying complications for the uprising. The climate factor, known as a
powerful catalyst to the Boxer uprising, is precisely the true cause of the event. Government records,
first hand accounts, and dendrochronology show climate s implications on the Chinese population at
the time and should be acknowledged as the primary origin of the Boxer.
In the 1890 s, throughout the provinces near Beijing and Tianjin, many militant groups began
appearing, uniquely priding themselves in their marital arts training and abilities. Named the Boxers
by the West due to their trainings, the
Spirit Boxers, Red Lanterns, and Big Sword Society (to name a few) had a goal to intensify their
bodies to be able to withstand physical blows and eventually even bullets. 2 The Boxer s true
beginning coincides with the political events that took place following the Juye Incident in November

of being leader due to her culture s outdated ideas of the female gender. Koro s strong belief of
keeping a sexist archaic tradition is criticised by Caro as Pai, and the community suffer the

Neal Cassady: The Man Who Set The World Free
Neal Cassady grew up as a quasi homeless wayfaring boy with his alcoholic, unemployed father in the
projects of Denver. His unconventional upbringing led to adolescence rife with theft, drug use, and
extreme sexual awakening at a young age. Cassady grew up quite quickly and led an overexposed life,
which foreshadows his death at the age of 42 of exposure, next to railroad tracks in Mexico. His life,
however, seems to be regarded by many as the eighth wonder of the world. He was full of an
interminable curiosity and energy, and was considered by many as the herald angel of the Beat

Cassady epitomizes these attitudes through his lifestyle, a lifestyle of limit pushing and rule breaking.
From his childhood, he had always been testing boundaries. By the time he was 18, it is estimated he
had stolen over 500 cars, just for fun.
Cassady, through a close friendship beginning at age 20 with Jack Kerouac and a twisted relationship
with Allen Ginsberg, provided much of the inspiration for the quintessential Beat poems and texts.
Even his correspondence with the two of them is considered Beat literature, for it encapsulates the
ideals and attitudes of the counterculture and the Beat Generation. Cassady appears in Kerouac s On
the Road as the legendary Dean Moriarty and Cody in Visions of Cody. Cassady as Dean Moriarty in
On the Road captured the spirit of Neal as the ultimate Beat.
Allen Ginsberg was introduced to Neal Cassady in 1946 in New York City and was instantly

Their early sexual relationship and Cassady s later rejection of Ginsberg both had a significant effect

Essay On Igg4-Related Disease
IgG4 related disease (IgG4 RD) is a newly recognized, multiorgan, fibro inflammatory disease
characterized by mass forming lesion with dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with large numbers
of IgG4+ plasma cells, storiform fibrosis and sometimes obliterative phlebitis. IgG4 RD was first
described in 2001 by Japanese researchers in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis with high levels
of serum IgG.[1, 2]
IgG4 RD usually affects individuals of middle to old age, with an onset at 50 70 years, although few
paediatric cases have been described. Males are more commonly affected especially for IgG4 related
pancreatitis with an M:F ratio of 3:7. However, IgG4 related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis may occur

Enlargement of one or more of trigeminal nerve branches is another feature of IgG4 ROD. The most
commonly involved branches are the infraorbital nerve (ION) and the frontal nerve. Other nerves may
be involved such as perioptic nerves, paravertebral nerves and great auricular nerve. The disease
involves mainly the epineurium and the affected nerves are infilterated by masses of lymphocytes,
plasma cells, eosinophils and large numbers of IgG+ plasma cells.[20 23]
EOM enlargement is not rare in IgG4 ROD especially in cases with enlarged orbital nerves. Single or
multiple muscles may be involved during the disease course in the following order of frequency:
inferior rectus, followed by superior rectus levator complex, lateral rectus, medial rectus, inferior
oblique and superior oblique. Histopathologically, the muscle biopsy shows a mixed and dense
infiltration with polyclonal B and T cells with some fibrosis.[24, 25]
IgG4 ROD may also involve the lacrimal drainage apparatus.[26] Furthermore, sclera and
conjunctival affection and nongranulomatous anterior uveitis have also been reported. [27, 28]
There is a correlation between IgG4 RD and ocular adnexal xanthogranulomatous disease in which a

Summary Of No Logo By Naomi Klein
Naomi Klein in her book No Logo outlines her thoughts as to how marketing and advertising by a
company has made a dramatic shift from showcasing a product, to the branding of the company name.
Companies have now shifted their focus to creating an association between the company and an idea.
The company then uses this idea to sell their products. In her book she also addresses the growing
massive globalization of corporations into global Goliaths. She makes the claim that such large
corporations may even be considered form of multinational government. Klein states that these huge
corporations are squeezing out the competition and creating less competition to compete with within
the markets, and less of a fight to attract consumers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book Klein fears that the brands have allowed the companies to become too powerful and there
is no counterbalance to their power. These super corporations are allowed to act at will and often are
stepping all other smaller corporations as well as within the countries these corporations operate in.
Her arguments are very much in line with the anti globalization movement that is gaining popularity
in the world. The brands of companies have become so powerful and insidious that they are almost
impossible to escape. Our culture has surrendered to the idea of the brand. Brands now dominate our
society and even have crept into our education systems. Klein says in her book, ...this corporate
obsession with brand identity is waging a war on public and individual space: on public institutions
such as schools, on youthful identities, on the concept of nationality and on the possibilities for
unmarketed space. (5) Coke and Pepsi have bidding wars over the rights to have their vending
machines in schools. College and university sports arenas are plastered with advertisements, or even
named after a corporation, like the Taco Bell Pavilion in Boise. There are certain corporations which
market themselves so aggressively, which are so intent on stamping their image on everybody and
every street, that they build up a reservoir of

The Downfall Of The Lehman Brothers
Part A
On September 15, 2008, the infamous investment bank Lehman Brothers was forced to file for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the federal court. The firm was entangled in risky business that ultimately
led to its demise because they did not take reasonable care to avoid acts that were foreseeably
damaging to the United States economy.
Established in the United States, Henry Lehman and his brothers, Mayer and Emanuel, formed a
partnership to start a general merchandising business together naming it Lehman Brothers. Soon after
its founding, the Lehman Brothers marked their evolution by turning into a global financial service
firm. The firm grew to be a major player in the financial history of the country, rapidly prospering to
be the fourth largest modern investment and brokerage bank corporation. The Lehman Brothers held a
policy until the 1920 s that only family members were permitted to form legal partnerships among this
firm, then eventually branched off allowing other key members to be carried into the business.
Lehman Brothers continued to develop their financial strategies and invested heavily into the
mortgage market. Once the firm became a practitioner for mortgages, the inflating housing market
became an appealing investment. Consequently, Lehman purchased five mortgage lenders one of
which included BNC Mortgage, a subprime mortgage lender. These mortgages were offered to people

The Truth Machine By Chuck Palahniuk
The Truth Machine had a terrifying aspect about it. Halperin s idea of a future with no lies sounds
delightful at first, but once you scratch the surface and realize that includes white lies you can see the
complications that may commence. I could see his future happening if we used the machine only in
trials, but I would not eliminate a jury completely. Machines are able to be tampered with, no matter
how well they are engineered. The Truth Machine furthered my belief that humans create themselves
from their past experiences. Illusions may be the most bizarre book I have held in my hands. And that
is saying something since Chuck Palahniuk is my favorite author. I found that as I was reading this
book I began to question the world I lived in. How amazing it would be if we could wake up and

Childhood Obesity Analysis
Parents Child Caretakers Obesity in America is literally a growing problem, affecting every age group.
Children are the most venerable group because they have no control over where they have dinner or
how often they have fast food. Parents and guardians make decisions about food and are responsible
for the health of children. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the last twenty years. This is
concerning because Type Two diabetes is a horrible, crippling disease that is affecting children and

the country and organize their efforts to prevent this disease. One such organization is the Leadership

(RWJF). The RWJF holds summits nationwide events calling on policy leaders nationwide to advance
healthy eating and active living options in their communities. According to the RWJF, a special
emphasis has been placed on collaborative state and community policy approaches that address
childhood obesity among vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the epidemic. The

A Romanticized View Of Their Ancestors
In southern fiction there are many characters to be found that possess heroic, or idealized, views of
their ancestors. These same characters are often times burdened by, or feel responsible for, the legacy
left behind by their families. The ancestor s beliefs are like ghost constantly haunting characters in
southern literature. Fennell aptly quotes Faulkner in her article writing:
No man is himself, he is the sum of his past. There is no such things really as was because the past is.
It is part of every man, every woman, and every moment. All of his or her ancestry, background, is all
a part of himself and herself at any moment. And so a man, a character in a story at any moment of
action is not just himself as he is then, he is all that made him. (Fennell 37)
It is seemingly impossible to separate the past from the present among characters in southern
literature. In this paper I will examine three characters and their romanticized view of their ancestors,
as well as their burden. I will be considering Gail Hightower and Joanna Burden in William Faulkner s
Light in August, and Cheyenne Cotterell in Tiya Miles The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens
Ghosts. All three of these characters idealize their ancestors while simultaneously feeling burdened as
a result of it.
In Faulkner s Light in August Gail Hightower, an outcast reverend, is heavily burdened by his father
and grandfather. He lives within the past and seems to have no care for the present or future.

Roman Twelve Tables
The Roman republic had set a specific set of laws that each person was suppose to abide by. These set
of laws were known as the Twelve Tables. After reading the selections from the Twelve Tables, I
gather that the Roman society was very strict and harsh, and its conception of justice was more based
on punishment than it was on negotiating the situation and coming to a clear resolution. The Romans
were more blunt with their punishments, they saw black and white , no grey area when making
decisions in court, which means that everything was a yes or no, no one person had the opportunity to
talk about any of their crimes, it was straight to punishment, or if they were found to be not guilty then
they were not punished. In Table IV : Rights of Head of Family, it expresses just how cruel they were,
Quickly kill... a dreadfully deformed child (Spielvogel p. 116). In my opinion, this law is wicked
because no one should be killed just because of the way that they look, especially if they were born
that way and can not help it. Before the Twelve Tables, there were major problems and struggles. Both
of the groups, patricians and plebeians, were able to vote, but only the patricians were granted the
right to be elected to government positions. They were both able to make legal agreements and have
marriages, but it was forbidden for a patrician and a plebeian to intermarry. There was conflict amongst

When diagnosing schizophrenia there are three different types of symptoms: positive, negative, and

considered to be dysfunctional processes. Disorganized thinking is when a person will talk and may

Hallucinations when only that person can either hear, see, or smell something that is not truly there.
The most common hallucinations are Voices ( Schizophrenia). These symptoms are what a person with

being involved with their child. This study was conducted in a level 3 NICU at a Swedish,
regional/university level 3 hospital. The NICU guidelines and procedures were designed to prevent
unnecessary parent infant separation and support attachment/bonding between infants and their
parents. The NICU has nine family rooms where parents can room with their infant during their
hospital stay and provide for their infant s care, with support from the staff. A convenience sample of
mothers and fathers of extremely preterm infants (born at a gestational stage (GA) of 27 weeks or less)
who received care in the NICU were recruited.
Seven couples were invited to participate in the study. One father declined participation; therefore,
seven mothers and six fathers participated. One couple had twins. The infants were born at twenty
three weeks and five days to twenty seven weeks and 6 days gestational age, with birth weights
ranging between 492 and 1044 grams. All of whom required ventilator support, for different periods of
times. The parents were interviewed at least one week after the infants were transferred from an
intensive care room to another type of room

Immature Mechanisms In Middle Adulthood
Cultural fiction Cultural fiction posits that ideas about middle adulthood are created by cultures.
Different cultures have varying views in the ways they recognize and understand middle adulthood
(Hutchison, 2015). In the United States, middle adulthood is often viewed through 2 cultural lenses.
The first sees mid life as a positive time in which an individual has accrued resources and coping
mechanisms. The second view of middle adulthood is a negative over the hill perspective, in which
this stage is viewed as a time of loss and decline (Hutchison, 2015). These differing views of losses
and gains in middle adulthood can be seen in the dynamic between Harvey Milk, and his adversary
(and murderer) Dan White. Harvey, throughout the film, accumulates as many resources as he can and
makes strides in his cause to gain justice for the gay community. Middle adulthood, for Milk, was
truly the prime of his life. His political opponent, Dan White, however, experienced a series of losses,
including his job and his political influence, which led him to become depressed and volcanically
angry. White s view of this time in his life was likely far more negative than Harvey s.
Immature mechanisms vs. mature mechanisms Immature mechanisms and mature mechanism describe
the ways in which people cope with life s demands. Immature mechanisms include denial, projection,
passive aggression, dissociation, acting out and fantasy. Mature mechanisms include sublimation,
altruism and humor

Different Cues Affect Binocular And Monocular Vision
Many researchers are interested in depth perception and how different cues affect what is seen. There
have been lots of studies done around depth perception. Some have done studies on how different cues
affect binocular and monocular vision in depth perception (Reinhardt Rutland, 1996). Others have
studied how depth cues are used in tasks like computer and video based tasks (Westerman Cribbin,
1998).
Visual depth perception is using cues to perceive the world in three dimensions and the distance of
objects. There are many cues to help with depth perception. They can be categorised in either
binocular vision (two eyes) or monocular vision (one eye). Binocular only has physiological cues
(retinal disparity and convergence). Monocular has physiological cues (accommodation and motion
parallax) and pictorial cues (interposition, elevation, texture, linear perspective, shading, aerial
perspective, and familiar and relative size). Pictorial cues can be in two dimensions and doesn t need
motion (Westerman Cribbin, 1998) whereas the other three (binocular, monocular and physiological)
use motion and three dimensions. Monocular vision comes from changes of each eye connecting to
distance. The most importance is accommodation. This is the change of lens curves needed to
maintain a sharp image on the retina. With the way that monocular changes occur it is said that this
influences depth perception most strongly. Monocular vision doesn t really affect depth perception but
it does

Bill Clinton Scandal Analysis
The scandal between Former President Bill Clinton and his intern Monica Lewinsky is one of the most
well known scandals in United States history. This scandal that took place from 1995 to 1997 had at
least 10 sexual encounters involving Clinton and Lewinsky. This series of encounters, along with other
things led to President Clinton being impeached.
There were a few people who were involved. One of the most important people is Bill Clinton. He
was the 42nd president of the United States. The next individual is Monica Lewinsky, who was an
intern at the White House who had clearance to get into the Oval Office. Another person involved is
not one who was physically involved in the scandal. This person is Betty Currie. She was the person
who granted or denied people access into the Oval Office. She ended up having to testify in the Jones
v. Clinton case. She is also accused of knowing about the affair and not informing anyone of it. Linda
Tripp ends up being one of the biggest sources of information regarding this scandal. Linda Tripp was
a worker for the public affairs office at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
President Clinton was obviously the most affected. He had many fines to pay along with many
investigations and an impeachment. He also suffers the consequence of being known as one of the
least truthful presidents in United States history. The next person who suffered a lot due to this scandal
was President Clintons wife, Hillary Clinton. She had to deal with the fact that her husband had
cheated on her. Though the marriage is still going, It is said that 1998 was a very rough year for her
and President Clinton. Though many have no mercy on Monica Lewinsky because it was her own
fault , she did suffer because of the scandal. The main effect on her because of the scandal was that
she was no longer seen as a person. She has also been shamed by many people because of her

The Things They Carried Rhetorical Analysis
The Things They Carried The Heaviest of Burdens
The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien is a non fiction body of fiction writing. While names,
characters and situations are imaginary, the circumstances encountered by the people represented in
the war depicted are very much real. There is an intriguing story line beneath yet another story that is
being told and with each sentence the more it resonates. There is the story of unrequited love,
unabashed bravery, and unfathomable pain. Throughout all of this turmoil and what is the very
essence of discomfort, the story moves forward and the reader is compelled to follow. In relating the
layers of stories wrapped into the writing O Brien masterfully uses the techniques of repetition, pattern
and indirect style of writing to emphasize that no amount of physical weight compares to the mental

The narrator gives voice to Jimmy Cross who wanted to know the intimate secrets of his Martha. He
wonders about her poetry and why she seemed so sad, why she danced alone. These are not words
spoken, but their impact is stronger when reading them from the point of view of Jimmy Cross
himself. This style of writing is the best to pull the reader in, to signify a change in emphasis and
intensity. This also serves to help create the mirror of what is being compared. Necessary weight for
war vs. inescapable weight of loss from the war.
There are countless critics with countless opinions of this writing. Different takes and different flavors
but all with the same base thought. The story told is masterful, tragic and lauded for it s bringing to
light what few can. It hits home as fiction, something that never fully happened as told. With the same
force it strikes that a version of this account played out countless times. Certainly more times than
there are people still living to tell of

Awakening to the World of Posibilities in Charles Baxter s...
Charles Baxter s short stories are well known for the strong presents of ordinary people encountering
extraordinary strangers who disturb their lives. Gryphon written by Charles Baxter is not an exception.
The story is filled with characters that are awaken from their boring lives and transported into a world
of possibilities. As a central idea of the story, Baxter s critics often mention middle America s
conventions, and the effect it has on anyone who does not fit the mold. Within Gryphon the reader
experiences a few days in the life of fourth grade class; specifically, a few days spent with a unique
substitute teacher. The narrative outlines, on many occasions, the unsureness in the face of the
unknown. Is the society ready to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She sounds sane in one breath and delusional in the next. An other fascinating fact about the title of
the story is the spelling of the word gryphon. It is a variant of griffin, which is more popular way of
spelling the term. As if a gryphon was not enough, the author choose to use the least popular version
of the spelling as well. This is yet another symbol of how truly different, out of this world Miss
Ferenczi really is. The preliminary settings are as ordinary as they can be. It is a Wednesday afternoon
(245) boring classroom between a geography class and an art project. It is quite and peaceful in Five
Oaks. In the background of a rural community consisted of unemployed college graduates and stay at
home moms (246),Miss Ferenczi is a colorful stranger. She is a breath of excitement to the children s
dull lives. She presents herself to the class in a very theatrical manner. First thing she mentions about
herself is her royal Hungarian ancestors. Her tale fascinates the young minds. Tommy the narrator of
the story, does not take his eyes of the woman (246). He notices a curious characteristic of her
physical appearance the two prominent lines, descending vertically from the sides of her mouth to the
chin (247). They resemble Pinocchio, who was never a real boy, but a prominent liar, further
emphasizing the way Miss Ferenczi plays with truths and facts. Pinocchio reference is a push pull
phenomena. It brings to the story the argument of

Analysis Of The Poem Cousin Nancy And Morning At The...
Cousin Nancy and Morning at the Window Poem Analysis and Exploration
Cousin Nancy
By T. S. Eliot
Miss Nancy Ellicott
Strode across the hills and broke them,
Rode across the hills and broke them
The barren New England hills
Riding to hounds
Over the cow pasture.
Miss Nancy Ellicott smoked
And danced all the modern dances;
And her aunts were not quite sure how they felt about it,
But they knew that it was modern.
Upon the glazen shelves kept watch
Matthew and Waldo, guardians of the faith,
The army of unalterable law.
Morning at the Window
T. S. Eliot, 1888 1965
They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates. The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be told you can t do something, because it s not
ladylike? It seems time and time again women in history were once told to be seen and not heard. T. S.
Eliot s poem Cousin Nancy broke barriers during its time with its writing about the modern woman.
Cousin Nancy may only be three stanzas, but Eliot s writing broke down barriers about the
stereotypical ideas of a poised,

  • 7. Qualities of Sports Leaders Qualities of sports leaders The four different qualities I will be talking about are decision making, evaluation, communication and also talking about managing a group. After I explained theses I will then relate them to an effective sports leader. An effective sports leader needs to make decisions in long term and short term parts. They need to consider what to do and why. Making good decisions will come through good experience of having to make big decisions either within a game or outside. Decision making means a sports leader makes a choice of what to do to help his own team out. A good sports leader will take the time to evaluate their own performance or other participants. Evaluating their own performance helps them to see their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Effective management in your participants will result in getting the best out of them. My sports leader I have suggested is Steven Gerrard. He has all these qualities and is a very successful leader by being captain of Liverpool Football Club and also England. Being this well known he must have a very good attitude and is looked upon as a role model for many people. His decision making is brilliant as he makes decisions to make key passes within games that lead his team to victory. He has years of experience to know what decisions are needed to be made. As he is captain for Liverpool he needs to evaluate each players performance and give them feedback either when he can during a game or at the end of games. This will push players on as he is seen as one of the best footballers in the world people will listen to him. He has good communication levels as he talks to his team constantly to give them advice either to say well done or mark players or even step up the game etc. having this communication allows his team to have time to no what to do if they have time on the ball. This is one of the most important qualities within football. Every game and every training session he has to lead players and even manage players abilities. • 8. Explication of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Essay Explication of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost When reading The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost, I found that it was personal, especially to the author. The fact that it was written in first person form helped me to conclude that it was probably about the author. I think the reasoning behind his writing of this poem was because in life, you have many obstacles to overcome and many choices and decisions to make, which opens a path that leads the way to your future. Since those things relate to Frost, I think it motivated him to write this poem on a personal basis, like a short autobiography on his life. It motivated him because he could then tell others about his life and give advice and guidance to the people that read his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The thing that always holds true though, is that the major issues people s lives are always ironically similar to each other or, at least can relate to them in many ways. Therefore, I found that this poem not only symbolizes or relates to the author, but it also symbolizes or holds true to almost everybody s lives. One of the major symbols within this poem is the roads. When he says Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, he is using the roads to symbolize the paths, choices, and decisions that he has to make in his life. Those decisions guide the way to his future, because when you come to a two way street or road you have to decide or make a choice on which path to take. Also when he says And sorry I could not travel both And be on traveler, he is telling us how he is insecure on which road to take because he is unsure of what s ahead and would like to travel both roads to come up with a conclusion or a decision on the correct road to take. So overall, what road basically symbolizes in this poem is the options that he has in his life and the decisions that he has to make. Another symbol in this poem is the many observations that he makes. When he says long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth, he is using his observations to symbolize the brainstorming, analyzing, and thinking you have to do before or ahead of time when you are offered two options in your life and only one path to take. ... It was a clock that only 618 others were made from. They sold for around £500, or that is what he expected, but when the auctioneer told him that the sale price had reached three time higher than that, the man was left dumbstruck. What was the watch found? It was a Rolex Panerai that they issued exclusively to divers of the Royal Italian Navy. Such as watch came from a humble purchase at a car boot sale that cost £10, but it sold for over £55,000 because of the rarity of this Rolex that they issued to the Italian navy divers during World War II. How Does Oprah s Decision To Open Her Academy I am not in support of Oprah s decision to open her academy because it does not functionally mimic the environment the girls were brought up in and therefore, cannot educate the girls appropriately for economic and political life in South Africa. Oprah s Dream Academy for Girls is a lavish and modern, something fit for people able to afford a boarding school education. The theory of functionalism states that schools are seen to adapt students to the economic, political, and social institutions of its society. The government did not support funding the academy, offering that only the basics are needed to create a learning environment, which Oprah rejected. Essay On Computer Advantages And Disadvantages When building a computer, there will be some challenges you might have to face in gathering information, assembling a computer, and supporting the system after assembly. While on the other hand, it can be difficult to choose what computer you should buy. The difference of buying and building a computer comes down to personal wants, but there are disadvantages and advantages for both options. The challenges you would face when building a computer can sometimes seem overwhelming. As you are gathering information, you have to make sure that everything is compatible with each other. You can t go out and buy a motherboard, only to discover that one of your other parts doesn t fit the right requirements. You also need to spend a good deal of time researching what you want, so to make sure that things work together. When assembling the computer, you have to worry about being gentle with your hardware. You have got to make sure that you keep yourself static free as well because if you do not ground yourself while in the building process, you could cause damage to your components. One way to avoid this is to not wear wool or rub your socks on the carpet; This helps to prevent a build up of static electricity, and you could always buy an antistatic wrist strap. By building a computer, you will have to fix the problem if anything goes wrong. This can be a challenge since you have different components from different companies. If you don t know what you re doing, you will have to pay for those damages; You can t get much help from one company to try to repair your computer either. Another challenge you face in building a computer, is that you have control over what goes into the computer. This can be a challenge since there is such a large variety of components to choose from, with prices being different, and the parts having different performances. At the same time, this just adds to the idea of full customization for the customer. So the 3 big cons are; You are responsible for fixing a damaged part, You have to make sure everything is compatible with each other, and it could be sometimes possible you will have to spend more money to get the things that you want performance wise. There is a still a major price difference D.C. and Delhi. One dollar will pay for much less stuff in America than its equivalent in rupees will buy in India. China s Qing regime, also found itself at odds with the Boxer movement due to their weak control and susceptibility to foreign influence. 1 The insurgency that erupted throughout parts of the country focused on these three main components, however these were not their fundamental concerns. Climate variables within lower north and east China, such as drought and flooding, were the underlying complications for the uprising. The climate factor, known as a powerful catalyst to the Boxer uprising, is precisely the true cause of the event. Government records, first hand accounts, and dendrochronology show climate s implications on the Chinese population at the time and should be acknowledged as the primary origin of the Boxer. In the 1890 s, throughout the provinces near Beijing and Tianjin, many militant groups began appearing, uniquely priding themselves in their marital arts training and abilities. After reading the selections from the Twelve Tables, I gather that the Roman society was very strict and harsh, and its conception of justice was more based on punishment than it was on negotiating the situation and coming to a clear resolution. The Romans were more blunt with their punishments, they saw black and white , no grey area when making decisions in court, which means that everything was a yes or no, no one person had the opportunity to talk about any of their crimes, it was straight to punishment, or if they were found to be not guilty then they were not punished. In Table IV : Rights of Head of Family, it expresses just how cruel they were, Quickly kill... a dreadfully deformed child (Spielvogel p. 116). The NICU has nine family rooms where parents can room with their infant during their hospital stay and provide for their infant s care, with support from the staff. A convenience sample of mothers and fathers of extremely preterm infants (born at a gestational stage (GA) of 27 weeks or less) who received care in the NICU were recruited. Seven couples were invited to participate in the study. One father declined participation; therefore, seven mothers and six fathers participated. One couple had twins. The infants were born at twenty three weeks and five days to twenty seven weeks and 6 days gestational age, with birth weights ranging between 492 and 1044 grams. All of whom required ventilator support, for different periods of times. The parents were interviewed at least one week after the infants were transferred from an intensive care room to another type of room ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Immature Mechanisms In Middle Adulthood Cultural fiction Cultural fiction posits that ideas about middle adulthood are created by cultures. Different cultures have varying views in the ways they recognize and understand middle adulthood (Hutchison, 2015). In the United States, middle adulthood is often viewed through 2 cultural lenses. The first sees mid life as a positive time in which an individual has accrued resources and coping mechanisms. The second view of middle adulthood is a negative over the hill perspective, in which this stage is viewed as a time of loss and decline (Hutchison, 2015). These differing views of losses and gains in middle adulthood can be seen in the dynamic between Harvey Milk, and his adversary (and murderer) Dan White. Harvey, throughout the film, accumulates as many resources as he can and makes strides in his cause to gain justice for the gay community. Middle adulthood, for Milk, was truly the prime of his life. His political opponent, Dan White, however, experienced a series of losses, including his job and his political influence, which led him to become depressed and volcanically angry. White s view of this time in his life was likely far more negative than Harvey s. Immature mechanisms vs. mature mechanisms Immature mechanisms and mature mechanism describe the ways in which people cope with life s demands. Immature mechanisms include denial, projection, passive aggression, dissociation, acting out and fantasy. Mature mechanisms include sublimation, altruism and humor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Different Cues Affect Binocular And Monocular Vision Many researchers are interested in depth perception and how different cues affect what is seen. There have been lots of studies done around depth perception. Some have done studies on how different cues affect binocular and monocular vision in depth perception (Reinhardt Rutland, 1996). Others have studied how depth cues are used in tasks like computer and video based tasks (Westerman Cribbin, 1998). Visual depth perception is using cues to perceive the world in three dimensions and the distance of objects. There are many cues to help with depth perception. They can be categorised in either binocular vision (two eyes) or monocular vision (one eye). Binocular only has physiological cues (retinal disparity and convergence). Monocular has physiological cues (accommodation and motion parallax) and pictorial cues (interposition, elevation, texture, linear perspective, shading, aerial perspective, and familiar and relative size). Pictorial cues can be in two dimensions and doesn t need motion (Westerman Cribbin, 1998) whereas the other three (binocular, monocular and physiological) use motion and three dimensions. Monocular vision comes from changes of each eye connecting to distance. The most importance is accommodation. This is the change of lens curves needed to maintain a sharp image on the retina. With the way that monocular changes occur it is said that this influences depth perception most strongly. Monocular vision doesn t really affect depth perception but it does ... • 42. The Things They Carried Rhetorical Analysis The Things They Carried The Heaviest of Burdens The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien is a non fiction body of fiction writing. While names, characters and situations are imaginary, the circumstances encountered by the people represented in the war depicted are very much real. There is an intriguing story line beneath yet another story that is being told and with each sentence the more it resonates. There is the story of unrequited love, unabashed bravery, and unfathomable pain. Throughout all of this turmoil and what is the very essence of discomfort, the story moves forward and the reader is compelled to follow. In relating the layers of stories wrapped into the writing O Brien masterfully uses the techniques of repetition, pattern and indirect style of writing to emphasize that no amount of physical weight compares to the mental and ... He wonders about her poetry and why she seemed so sad, why she danced alone. These are not words spoken, but their impact is stronger when reading them from the point of view of Jimmy Cross himself. This style of writing is the best to pull the reader in, to signify a change in emphasis and intensity. This also serves to help create the mirror of what is being compared. It hits home as fiction, something that never fully happened as told. With the same force it strikes that a version of this account played out countless times. • 43. Awakening to the World of Posibilities in Charles Baxter s... Charles Baxter s short stories are well known for the strong presents of ordinary people encountering extraordinary strangers who disturb their lives. Gryphon written by Charles Baxter is not an exception. The story is filled with characters that are awaken from their boring lives and transported into a world of possibilities. She sounds sane in one breath and delusional in the next. An other fascinating fact about the title of the story is the spelling of the word gryphon. It is a variant of griffin, which is more popular way of spelling the term. As if a gryphon was not enough, the author choose to use the least popular version of the spelling as well. This is yet another symbol of how truly different, out of this world Miss Ferenczi really is. The preliminary settings are as ordinary as they can be. It is a Wednesday afternoon (245) boring classroom between a geography class and an art project. It is quite and peaceful in Five Oaks. In the background of a rural community consisted of unemployed college graduates and stay at home moms (246),Miss Ferenczi is a colorful stranger. She is a breath of excitement to the children s dull lives. She presents herself to the class in a very theatrical manner. First thing she mentions about herself is her royal Hungarian ancestors. Her tale fascinates the young minds. Tommy the narrator of the story, does not take his eyes of the woman (246). He notices a curious characteristic of her physical appearance the two prominent lines, descending vertically from the sides of her mouth to the chin (247). They resemble Pinocchio, who was never a real boy, but a prominent liar, further emphasizing the way Miss Ferenczi plays with truths and facts. Pinocchio reference is a push pull phenomena. Eliot s poem Cousin Nancy broke barriers during its time with its writing about the modern woman.
