The Reality Of Reality Television Essay
Reality television is now one of the most consumed television genres broadcasted to the general
public. Reality television has become more about mindless watching and creating the most unrealistic
environment possible, rather than creating a show for an important purpose. Today, shows like Beauty
and the Geek, Big Brother, and every other reality show fit into this mold, but when viewed critically
lessons appear. In the case of TV today, reality shows depict an altered reality because of the
unrealistic situations this genre presents. Firstly, Beauty and the Geek claimed they conducted the
ultimate social experiment, and yet is still considered as a show in the genre of reality TV. Since
Beauty and the Geek subsisted as a social experiment, altered variables, such as the environment,
influenced participants to conduct themselves in a different way than how they would behave on a
regular basis in reaction to the stimuli the show provided. Contestants altered their behavior by
sharing a bed with a stranger, and they acted friendly because they were now living with strangers in a
home with cameras, so they felt they needed to impress. Beauty and the Geek is comparable to Big
Brother because they were both filmed under altered conditions. For Big Brother specifically, the
contestants participated under a much more controlled environment by being locked into a compound
that was cut off from the rest of the outside world. This meant no TVs, phones, computers, etc., which

Maggie and Dee; Two Sisters, Two Worlds Essay
February 24, 2010
Maggie and Dee; Two Sisters, Two Worlds The genuine appreciation of heritage and family is the
focus of Alice Walker s Everyday Use . Dee and Maggie s characters are the vessels that Walker uses
to demonstrate the difference between appreciating possessions for their usefulness as well as their
personal significance and their contrasting value as a trendy, materialistic connection. There is a
palpable difference between Maggie and Dee, both in physical appearance as well as in personality
traits and their treatment of the personal artifacts that come into play within the story is very telling of
this. Maggie, who is self conscious of her appearance, and will stand hopelessly in corners, homely
and ashamed of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maggie who knows how to quilt and chewed checkerberry snuff, already knows what her life has to
offer. Her knowledge of her future is derived from her knowledge of her ancestry. There appears to be
no rancor in her acceptance of this. When the climactic scene occurs and Dee asks Can I have these
quilts? (145), Maggie s first implied reaction is one of surprise and anger; I heard something fall in the
kitchen, and a minute later the kitchen door slammed (145). But as someone never used to winning
anything, or having anything reserved for her (146), Maggie succumbs and offers to let Dee have
them. Although Maggie knows how to quilt (146), she is able to comprehend the deeper personal
value of the quilts, and states that she can member Grandma Dee without the quilts (146). Despite
their value as an item of everyday use, the quilts are meaningful to Maggie, much in the way they are
to her mother who remembers having quilted them with Big Dee. The scraps, the bits and pieces and
one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra s
uniform that he wore in the Civil War. (145) hold deep significance to Maggie. Dee, on the other hand,
is portrayed in a very different light by Walker. Commencing with her physical appearance; Dee is
lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure (141). However, their differences do not end
there. Dee is intelligent,

Analysis Of The Gold Cat By Annie Dillard
Dillard uses many unusual language choices to create more meaning in the story both in physical and
figurative parts of the essay. While Dillard is in her bathroom calling attention to the spider s web, she
uses both inversion and repetition, Her six inch mess of web works, works somehow, works
miraculously, to keep her alive and me amazed (2). This sentence uses works repetitively in
succession, this seems to reaffirm that the web is the device that captures the dead bugs and shows her
awe towards the spider s mechanism. This sentence also uses inversion with the phrase me amazed,
the words have been switched from the syntactically correct amazed me. Dillard also uses repetition
not isolated in a single sentence to create meaning and emphasize the ... Show more content on

Particularly by calling her cat gold, Dillard creates striking imagery since a cat is not often described
as gold. This creates emphasis on the continued theme which capitalizes on the symbolism of the
flame and the call to write that Dillard struggles with. Another instance of repetition appears in the
repeated number sixteen. In the work itself, Dillard mentions that there are sixteen or so corpses she
has tossed to the floor (2) and a novel about Rimbaud that had made me want to be a writer at when I
was sixteen (5). Although not directly stated in the text, it is also important to note that Rimbaud, the
subject of the book she read in the mountains, ran away at the age of sixteen. This most likely
emphasizes the point Dillard is trying to make that by deciding to be a writer a huge sacrifice is made,
just like how the dead bugs sacrificed themselves to be the spider s prey. Also in The Death of a Moth,
Dillard not only continues to use the symbolism of candles throughout the narrative, she also mentions
the number of candles or wicks numerically throughout her

Jackson Pollock s Full Fathom Five
Jackson Pollock s painting titled Full Fathom Five reveals black and silver splatters of paint that aren t
necessarily straight. His painting includes colors such as blue, black, white and even specks of orange.
In addition, there are no figures which can be easily deciphered and the paint seems to have been
spilled all over the canvas. Thus, the painting does not display calculation or a heavy use of logic.
Instead, his creation seems to thrive off creativity and disorder. So I ask, how do we make sense of
such an unreasonable painting?
The answer can be found within the philosophical ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche introduces
to readers both the Apollonian force and the Dionysian force is his book The Birth of Tragedy. To be
specific, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under these circumstances, Jackson Pollock s painting has a sense of musicality to it that adds onto
the creative disorder. That is to say that his irrational paint splatters are almost rhythmic in the way
they were splattered onto the canvas. Friedrich Nietzsche believes that this rhythm is very significant
since it only occurs under the influence of the Dionysian force. This can be seen in the quote: The
essence of nature is now to be expressed symbolically...not the mere symbolism of the lips, face, and
speech but the whole pantomime of dancing, forcing every member into rhythmic movement, Then
the other symbolic powers suddenly press forward, particularly those of music, in rhythmics,
dynamics, and harmony (Cahn and Meskin 225). Nietzsche s quote tells us how the Dionysian force
causes a dancer to exude harmony and rhythm. As dancers under the Dionysian influence would all
dance together in unison, the paint splatters dance across the canvas in a way that makes it all come
together. For this reason, when looking at Full Fathom Five, the paint starts to resemble musical dance
rather than images or lines. However, Pollock s painting not only features motions similar to the the
art of dance. Full Fathom Five is essentially a grand mystery of indiscernible images coexisting
among one another. For example, Friedrich Nietzsche says

Effects of Advertising Essay
Every day, the average person watches three hours of television, reads between five to ten magazines
or newspapers, and listens to the radio for five hours (WOW). While doing this, a part of what he
experiences are advertisements that come on at an average of every ten minutes. These advertisements
are usually used to persuade the costumer to buy something. They also might be used for the listener
to do something that the advertisement is asking. Sometimes these advertisements can be hidden
messages between or in television programs. This paper is a serious investigation in educating the
reader about the effects of advertisement. This investigation will include looking at how advertising

This printing press idea quickly spread throughout Europe and later to the Americas (YouHis2).
Afterwards, around the 1700s, when the use of newspapers began to be an everyday publication,
advertisements started being printed in them, even if the advertisements were simple at the time.
Newspapers became the first medium to be conquered by advertisement. In 1721, Benjamin Franklin
founded the Pennsylvania Gazette, the second newspaper made in the Americas. What was special
about it is that it had pictures accompanying the ads to help the people understand better their product,
which was the difference with his close relative, The Boston Gazette, which had pictureless ads
(YouHis3). Since the eighteenth century, most newspapers have relied on advertisements for part of
their profit, and they have been developing advertising bit by bit.
Following the example of the newspapers, radio programming began using advertisements. These
advertisements were very slow and repetitive sonnets that companies used to get people to know their
products. These advertisements started in the late 1800s, with their lengths being fairly short. They
never extended past a minute. To compensate for the brevity of the ads, companies would repeat the
same ad many times between radio programs.
Then, the invention of television came along. Advertisements on television captivated everyone s

The Health Impacts And Costs Of Falling On Older Adults
Falls are the most frequent and devastating accidents in older adult (WHO, 2004). There are different
interpretations related to falls. For instance, according to healthcare professions fall is an event leading
to ill health and injuries, whereas older adults define it as a loss of balance (Zecevic et al., 2006).
Approximately, 28% to 35% older adults age 65 years and older fall each year (WHO, 2007). Around
85% of these falls occurs in the home among older adults living independently (Tideiksaar, 1987).
Falls accounts for 40% of all fatal injuries (Rubenstein, 2006). Fall is a reason for 25% of all hospital
admissions, 40% of all nursing home admissions and 40% of those admitted do not return to

In 2010, the total medical as well as work loss cost due to falls was $567 million (Ohio Department of
Health, 2013). Explicitly, falls represent a major health challenge for older adults and the health care
system. Fall experience in older adults is related to different consequences. The most common
psychological effects caused by falling experience are fear of falling, loss of self efficacy, activity
avoidance and loss of self confidence (Alice et al., 2008). Fear of falling is an increasing problem and
serious concern among older adults (Kong et al., 2002). Related to the falling experience, older adults
frequently report fear of falling (World Health Organization, 2007) also termed as post fall syndrome
(Murphy Isaacs, 1982). Post fall syndrome occurs when ambulatory persons develop an intense fear
and walking disorders (i.e. gait and balance abnormalities) after a fall experience. Since, Murphy et al.
defined post fall syndrome, fear of fall was identified as one of the key symptoms of this syndrome
and has gained recognition as a specific health problem among older adults. Fear of falling is
widespread and has been reported as the most common fear of older adults (Howland et al., 1993). It
is an important aspect to consider, particularly for those who develop fear after having fallen (Gagnon
Flint, 2003). However, fear of falling was also frequently found among older adults who had not yet
experienced a fall due to age related

Loss Of Command In Tangerine By Edward Bloor
Angela Merici once said, Beware of trying to accomplish anything by force. Forcing something to go
against its nature and try to have it yield to one s command may seem like a bright idea at first, but it
soon causes more problems than it s worth. The destiny of nature and life cannot be traded or changed
for a piece of fake perfection, no matter what one may believe may come of it. In Tangerine by
Edward Bloor, forceful actions cause a myriad of problems for those living in Tangerine. The people
of the community of Lake Windsor Downs forced the land to be something that it wasn t. Which
caused chains of events of preventable problems they had to deal with. For instance, when Paul was
first arriving at his new home in Tangerine, he describes it as, ...A place carpeted with green grass,

expensive houses... (Bloor ) Those who live in Lake Windsor Downs want to ... Show more content on

Erik s success in football so much that it s always his topic of choice to talk about. He has created a
trap in which Erik s only defining trait is his skills in football. Paul s father has also left Erik as

Battle Of Vietnam Essay
The Vietnam war began in 1954 through the region which goes back several decades. The vietnam
war was a long, arduous war between North Vietnam and South vietnam, as well as south vietnam s
main ally, the united states. At the time, North vietnam held a communist government. The war began
in 1954 through an ongoing conflict between Russia and America. Going back to WWII, japanese
forces invaded vietnam to fight off japanese occupiers and the french. At the time, the political leader
Ho Chi Minh, who was a communist, formed what is called the Viet Minh, which is the league for
independence for vietnam. Than, after WWII, Japan withdrew its forces from Vietnam, leaving
emperor Bao Dai in total control. Seeing this as an opportunity, he made the Viet Minh forces rise up,
taking control of the northern city of Hanoi and declaring it a democratic republic with himself as
president. Both communist North and neutral South Vietnam simply wanted Vietnam to be unified as
one again. This was quickly shut down as Ho and his supporters wanted a communist nation so Bao

A Separate Peace By John Knowles
The war was not only happening in the real world, but also in the Devon School of Prep. The book A
Separate Peace by John Knowles is mostly about a boy, Gene, who is receiving his education and
learning about how to become a soldier to fight in the second World War. He and his best pal, Finny,
are both being forced to mature and grow up before being drafted to fight, but before that even
happens Gene s jealousy gets the best of him which will threaten his friendship. Throughout the novel
John Knowles uses a great deal of literary elements to help add imagery, thrill, and amusement to the
story. Some of the elements include paradoxes, caricature, and theme.

Another way Knowles uses paradoxes in his story is when Phineas tells Gene he s sorry for pulling
him away from school and that Gene is his best pal (John Knowles 41). This proves that even though
their friendship is slowly falling apart Finny still wants things to be okay between them, for example
he hesitates before reinsuring Gene at this teen age period in life the proper person is you best pal. He
hesitated and then added, which is what you are, and there was silence on his dune. (Knowles 41). No
this is not a statement paradox, but it is a paradox because throughout the entire novel Gene believes
Finny is his best pal, yet when Finny tells Gene, Gene becomes flabbergasted and cannot believe so
and after Finny s statement he thinks to himself I should have told him then that he was my best friend
also and rounded off what he had said. I started to; I nearly did. But something held me back. Perhaps
I was stopped by that level of feeling, deeper than thought, which contains the truth, (Knowles 41). He
doesn t believe so because of his jealousy of Finny. His jealousy will become a barrier between the
two boys that will bring them closer together and completely separate them.

Analysis Of The Book Gladwell
Maddy Rigby
Smith
AP English III
30 November 2014
In his previous book, Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase tipping point , meaning the moment when
an idea or concept suddenly becomes popular within the general populace, and in his following book,
he gives us the term Outliers which means something that lies outside of the normal or the expected.
In his book Blink, Gladwell provides us with two more phrases; thin slicing and blink. To blink is to
act without thinking, working on split second decisions to make choices. Thin slicing is using the
small amount of information that is known to come to a conclusion without further searching for more
information. According to Gladwell, snap judgements often provide better decisions than well
informed, over analysed ones, which is ironic in our generation of information overload. The book, in
the way that Gladwell s books tend to do, opens with an anecdote, this one opening much like a
detective novel, talking extensively about the discovery of a statue and about the group of analysers
that were initially fooled by it, coming to believe that it had shown to be genuine after much study.
After their extensive studying, they were sure in their deduction, but another group came into the
picture soon after and looked at it or blinked and declared it a fake and a forgery and ended up being
right. Gladwell provides a series of questions following his anecdote is overanalyzing incorrect? Does
blinking always provide the correct

Population Growth in South Florida and Salt Water Intrusion
Introduction
Rapid population growth in South Florida has significantly increased the demand for water and the
strain on the fresh groundwater supplies has triggered more saltwater intrusion to the Biscayne aquifer.
Saltwater intrusion has been one the main contaminant that continues to endanger the Biscayne
aquifer. It has occurred as a result of the followings: the over pumping by wells, the construction of
drainage canals, and the lowering of the water table by drought. Ongoing efforts by South Florida
water agencies to protect the aquifer from saltwater intrusion include groundwater monitoring, water
management and conservation.
The Biscayne Aquifer
An aquifer is defined as underground layers of rock saturated with water that can be brought to the
surface through natural springs or by pumping. Named after Biscayne Bay, the Biscayne aquifer is a
coastal, unconfined aquifer because its top portion is the water table and it merges with the floor of
Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Underlies an area of approximately 4000 square miles, the
Biscayne aquifer s maps out from the southern tip of the state northwest along a wavy line to south
Palm Beach County. The cross section of the aquifer resembles a wedge and its gets deeper as it gets
closer to the eastern coast. The Biscayne aquifer is the primary source of freshwater to most of South
Florida (Dade, Broward and part of Palm Beach counties). Furthermore, water from the aquifer is
pumped through pipeline to the

Sociological Research On Physical Disability
The labelling theory are the actions of individuals who are labelled or seen as deviant. The theorist
Becker suggests labelling theories which is to look beyond by just the norm breaking act but instead
focuses on how society view people who are deemed as deviant in this case physically disabled and
reactions from society whether it is good or bad. Physical disability is when a person lost full or partial
loss of their bodily functions. Labelling perspective is still relevant in our society and for society to be
able to look beyond the norm breaking; society needs to develop an understanding about the
difference between disabilities . Stigma labels may produce the deviant behaviour that is being
condemned and therefore individuals can become the thing that they are labelled as. Stigma are bodily
traits, marks or features that are in some way unusual . Which can occur as a consequence for social
rejection.
Most sociological research on physical disability by using a labelling theory approach and focusing on
the negative consequence of the stigma. Labelling behaviour as disability can provide the disability

physical disability. Negative consequences would include restrictions on rights, limitations on life
chances, limitations on future participation in society and employment difficulties for the individuals
who are physically disabled, those all result in a negative

Pros And Cons Of Child Adoption
Adopting children is common all around the world. It has been a normal thing to see for a while. What
many do not know is that a single person can take ownership of someone in their youth. It has been
allowed for a while, yet many people who I have asked are not knowledgeable on the subject. People
who plan to adopt or have kids in the future can benefit from this. It is an awesome way to have a
child at any stage of life. I know that many people are looking to have children but cannot because of
one reason or another. The problem is, some people say that one parent isn t enough to raise a child.
With more issues happening in the world, people tend to worry more about how each child will be
when they grow up. Equally, I get where people are coming from if they believe that. Some citizens
totally disagree that a person can adopt alone. They argue that every child needs two people to look
out for them. According to that mindset, mentally a parent cannot raise a child on their own. Raising
children is also physically tough too. It is felt to be that way because the energy, money, and love that
they need to give the child. Supporting the kid can get stressful because it s needed to be at work most
of the time to get money but also be with their children. Single parents, children with only one parent,
or people who know of them are ones who tend to feel this way. Raising someone is difficult with two
parents, and they believe it is way harder with half the support.

The Philosophy Of Descartes Meditations
Descartes Meditations is said to be the beginning of Western Philosophy. His writings are still greatly
referred to to this day, and he is most famous for his quote cogito ergo sum which translates to I think,
therefore I am. Each of Descartes meditations are followed by objections from other theologists and
philosophers, and thereon followed by replies from Descartes. Some objections are made stronger than
others, for example, Thomas Hobbes, and it could be doubted whether or not Descartes truly was able
to successfully counter Hobbes objections. Hobbes wrote the third set of objections on all six of
Descartes meditations, and in some cases making multiple objections within one meditation. Descartes
first meditation concerns those things that can be called into doubt. It is in this mediation that
Descartes relays all of which he previously believed in his life that could be false. He, in turn, decides
that it would be best if he forgo all of his beliefs that could be false and begin again by starting with
more certain bases. Descartes discusses his belief that though the senses are what we base our most
certain knowledge on, the senses can be deceptive; for example, we sense things in dreams just as we
do when we are awake. Hobbes objects to this meditation by saying if we leave out reason and only
take into account our senses, then doubt is what follows; however, Plato had already come out with
the idea of sensory deception as it applies to dreams, and so all

The Benefits Of Hiking The Appalachian Trail
The cost is one part of hiking the Appalachian trail. Every mile of the trail to hike costs you $1.50
per/mile. If you hike the whole trail, every mile put together costs $3000 for the whole trail. But, the
cost of the trail does not include the amount of gear you have and carrying with you on the trail. It
only cost $1.50 per/person. The amount of stuff you are carrying does nothing to the price that you
have to pay per/mile. So if you are planning on hiking the whole Application trail, make sure you have
$3000 dollars on you to hike the whole trail.
How was the Appalachian trail created? In October 1921 Benton MacKaye had the idea of the trail.
By March 1925, MacKaye had generated enough support for a hiking trail. Retired Connecticut Judge

Good Thinking Paper In College
Writing on a high school level, and even a college level, has become more of a race for the best grade,
rather than actually forming a good paper. The midnight masterpiece , as some put it, have become
more and more common, and many people lose the idea of the paper during this process. I know for a
fact I have struggled with this issue of beautifying essays to make them look, for lack of a better term,
professional. Just like Milo B. Beckham states in his article, . It s all icing like the staple and the font
choice layers and layers of icing on a tiny, bland cake. That statement is a very simple way of putting
this issue into words. All students alike should be asking themselves a very important question: What s
the point of having a good looking paper when the content is less than stellar? Over the years my
writing has become more and more proficient and interesting, rather than good looking and clean. I
have learned to put my ideas on to paper and I stopped lying to myself when it comes to thinking I

my work. This helps me see a different prospective on my paper. Harry Frankfort says In the old days

But man is not made for defeat, he said. A man can be destroyed but not defeated. (Hemingway, 29).
This is one of the lines that Ernest Hemingway uses in one of his books, titled, The Old Man and The

book, Death in the Afternoon, Hemingway describes some of his experiences during this time, and
how rescuers had to collect the shredded fragments of dead people. He was wounded by mortar fire,
but despite that managed to carry an Italian soldier to safety, and was awarded the Italian Silver Medal
of Bravery (Mayers, 1985). Hemingway spent a lot of time traveling, and lived in some places, such as
Kansas City, Toronto, Canada, Italy, Spain, Cuba, Paris and Key West, Florida.
Hemingway was only eighteen at the time. He had several wounds on both legs, and had to be
operated immediately. Apparently, he fell in love for the first time with a Red Cross nurse, Agnes von
Kurowsky. They agreed to get married, but later on, she wrote him with the news of her engagement
to someone else, which left him heartbroken and devastated. Biographer Jeffrey Meyers claims that
Hemingway was devastated by Agnes rejection, and he followed a pattern of abandoning a wife before
she abandoned him in future relationships. Personally, one might think that there is more to the way
Hemingway was than what a reader may believe.
In his entire lifetime, Hemingway was known for his outlandish love life and his constant insistence of

Movie Review Of Doc
Doc. 1 Scene 1 (TT 61 Amenuser (User) usr)
This scene is represented in the inner room especially on the lower part of the northern wall which is
largely damaged. This part carries a large list of offerings, beneath which to the left hand side, there
are the final scene of the opening of the mouth ritual with sacrifice offerings to the right hand side.
This scene represents three men holding offerings like a goose, a heart and a bull s leg.
Doc. 2 Scene 2 (TT 83 aAmethu aAmTw aAhmos iaH ms)
On the west wall of inner room IJ, most of the scenes are extremely damaged near side I except for the
scene which represents funeral Procession facing the goddess of the west. The goddess in this scene is
the personification of Hathor. The scene is divided into two registers containing men in boats preceded
by shrines while the lower part of the wall is completely ruined. The first register represents two men
on a boat, one of them holding a bull s leg with his right hand trying to pull some water and holding a
heart in a vase on his left hand. This scene perhaps refers to removing both the heart and the leg of
Osiris from the water.
Doc. 3 Scene 3 (TT 84 Amunedjeh iAm.w nDH)

European Launch Proposal
EUROPEAN LAUNCH PROPOSAL
Updated: 23 July 2010
OVERVIEW
The following plan outlines the suggested activity for the launch of Energizer s new Energi to Go
power pack line of products in Europe.
Energizer will formally introduce the products within the Energi To Go power pack line to key
technology and consumer media in August. This falls within the summer holidays and is a quiet time
for journalists as many are away. In addition to which, a number of the European publications
shutdown for the month or operate with a skeletal staff. There are also the long lead times for the
monthly titles, usually 4 6 weeks, which needs to be taken into consideration and many of the
publications are preparing for their Christmas editions now. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The interviews could either take place at a centrally agreed location; but they may also take place at
the publication s office.
Feature placements: proactively target relevant feature stories in the technology and consumer tech
press and in national publications with story scenarios highlighting the benefits of the new product
line.
Product reviews: Product samples delivered to editors and gadget bloggers supported by the
development of product round ups for the inclusion in product guides.
IFA 2010: At IFA we will organise media one to one briefings with attending press either at a central
café or if Energizer are at the show on their stand. As this is largely a German show many of the
attendees will be with German speaking reporters though we will also target press from the other
regions. The briefings will be staffed by members of WS Munich office.
TIMING
August: Media pitching, material localization, proactive feature outreach, kick start product reviews
cycle
September 2010: Attendance at IFA 2010, continued media outreach, feature placements and product

Can A Machine Know Essay
One of the most biased and controversial topics in the field of philosophy is that of a statement, and
the questioning of Can a machine know. The problems associating and surrounding this topic are
endless, because of all the different biases, reasonable and skeptical thoughts that people contribute to
the discussions. On an occasion when this turmoil question comes up an individual might be
comparing and thinking that a plain toaster is a machine which is true and yet someone else compares
the newest breakthrough in technology such as a robot and they might say that its knows what it is

The company Honda has made a robot that they say is by far the most advanced one in the world
today, they quote on quote have said it is just like us. The robot has the ability to talk shake hands and
perform the mechanical functions that an individual may have, yet in the end the robot was
programmed to raise its arm and move it up and down when someone else does, so it mimics your
moves and looks up the possible outcomes in its data base, this is NOT an example of a real human. A
human has the ability to process the knowledge or what you have said to him or her and have his own
opinion and bias towards the conversation or the activity that he or she is involved in, where as a robot
just performs the task that it is given and programmed to do, if you were to insult the machine in any
ways it would not talk back nor would it be hurt by your actions. Hondas robot just performs the tasks
that it is programmed to do such as walk on black circular lines. What I am getting at is a machine just
performs the tasks it is made to do with no regret bias or any feelings towards the function.

Christian Persecution In The Early Church
For the third year in a row, the modern persecution of Christians worldwide has hit another record
high according to Christianity Today (Persecution in the Early Church). Right now, it is very
dangerous to be a Christian in some countries of the world. Countries in Asia and the Middle East
show the most violence towards Christians. If history really does repeat itself, Christianity will grow
in numbers and in faith. More people will convert and the religion as a whole will be strengthened.
This current issue can be related to Christian persecution starting in 64 AD which became most
prominent in the Roman Empire. Christians have continued to be persecuted sporadically throughout
history.

One instance of the occasional persecution was in 112 AD when Pliny The Younger was the Roman
governor of Bithynia. ...Pliny condemned to immediate execution those who confessed to being
Christians. He believed that Christianity itself was punishable, but the defiant, martyr attitude of the
accused left [him] in no doubt that his action was right (Persecution in the Early Church). He would
give people three chances to deny their beliefs, if they didn t they would be killed. They were sent to
the same torturous deaths as Nero used. Pliny the Younger began to send letters to the Emperor Trajan,
explaining his methods in hopes of approval. In one of his most famous letters, he wrote, Meanwhile,
in the case of those who were denounced to me as Christians, I have observed the following
procedure: I interrogated these as to whether they were Christians; those who confessed I interrogated
a second and a third time, threatening them with punishment; those who persisted I ordered executed
(Pliny on the Christians). Martyrs were very common at this point in time. Granted, people would
deny Christ in order to keep their lives, but many more would hold firm in their beliefs until

Analysis of the Closet Scene in Hamlet the Movie Essay
Hamlet is often seen as one of the most well known examples of an Oedipus Complex presented in
literature. The reasons for this is probably because of the plot that resolves around the revenge that
Hamlet has against his step father Claudius and because of the relationship that Hamlet has with his
mother that is loaded with sexual energy. Hamlet s love for his mother is especially exemplified by the
Mel Gibson s interpretation of the infamous closet scene.
Traditionally a Queen s closet was not worth emphasizing a bedroom, but it is likely that most of the
readers would presume that the closet scene takes place in Gertrude?s bedroom because of the
obsession that Hamlet has about Gertrude?s bed. When Hamlet responds to his mother?s ... Show

When the last kiss is given, the camera angle turns to have the bed as well as the two figures kissing in
the picture. Gertrude by the bed is the last focus of the camera you see when the scene ends.
Richardson?s Hamlet is not as much preoccupied with sexuality than Olivier?s or the Zeffirelli?s
Hamlet. The relationship between Gertrude and Hamlet in this film seems more impersonal than the
others. The viewer experience much more hate from Hamlet towards Gertrude in this film that
explains why Richardson left out a lot of the dialogue at the end of the scene, because he wanted the
focus to be more on the beginning of the scene where Hamlet?s words are much harsher towards
Gertrude, than at the end of it. At the end of the scene Hamlet accentuates the words: ?I must be cruel
to be kind? that demonstrate the point. The bed is not very prominent in Richardson?s version of
Hamlet that indicates that he did not want the viewer to focus on the on the sexual connotation that
goes with the bed. It is true on the other hand that Gertrude and Hamlet lied on the bed at the end of
the scene, but the viewer gets the feeling that it was more an indicator of the intimacy that goes with a
normal mother and son relationship than an Oedipus Complex case. Hamlet cried like a little boy that
lost his father and not like a lover that lost his mistress. When you compare the lighting of the closet
scene from the Richardson version with the Zeffirelli, it

Labor Unions and Relevance
Labor Unions and Relevance In the United States, labor unions are seeing an increased amount of
controversy surrounding their helpfulness to the U.S. economy. Recently, comparisons between the
successes of a company such as Toyota versus Ford have brought the issue of unions to the forefront.
Many cite the cost Ford has due to the fact that the employees are unionized and receive more benefits
at a higher cost to the company. On the other hand, many people see great benefit for Americans who
are protected under a union contract; however, it is possible to create a work environment that is
successful, safe, fair, and beneficial to employees without being a union shop. In 1953, approximately
half of the workers in the United States were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The following meeting essentially turned into a gripe festival in which the employee complained
about the management, fellow employees, the workload, and the lack of recognition for a job well
done. Fortunately, this issue went no further. Unfortunately for this organization, most filed
complaints are more closely related to people being upset about being rightly disciplined than the
company truly committing acts contrary to the negotiated contract. The actual relevance that unions
have in today s society is shrinking, not only in numbers or employee attitudes, but politically as well.
In the Journal of Labor Research, Hurd and Pinnock (2004) dissect the reasons for the shrinking affect
unions have in politics. They say that after George W. Bush became president, his administration
worked to the disband National Partnership Council, which was set in place to promote positive
relationships with federal unions. The result of the actions from the Bush administration is a labor
movement that is less unified and therefore likely to be less effective on the political front (Hurd and
Pinnock, 2004). In order for corporations to remain competitive in the business market, they will need

There are also quite a few scenes in the film in which the cameras depth of field and focus are used in
different ways to either focus only on one particular subject in the shot or focus on all subjects both
near and far using a deep focus.
As far as the context of the film is concerned I believe it would be possible to take certain scenes and
piece them together in such a way as to illustrate a theme, but I believe watching the entire film really
brings everything together. I have no personal influences or biases that affected my opinion of the
film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no overtones that
should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise. Overall I love the story and I think that the Tuohy
family set an amazing example for others to follow.
This film has many genres to include biography, drama, and sports genres. The most prevalent genre
for this film is the biography genre. The Blind Side (2009) tells the story of Michael Oher, the first

of a drama and due to the nature of the film it may also fall into the sports genre.

Comparing The Iliad And The Aeneid
Homer once said, Two urns on Jove s high throne have ever stood, the source of evil one, and one of
good; from thence the cup of mortal man he fills, blessings to these, to those distributes ills; to most he
mingles both. What the great philosopher is establishing is that the source of good and evil are the
same while being different. Reminiscent of how The Iliad and the Aeneid are both epic poems that
share similarities such as the setting, the reoccurring motif of gods, as well as aspects like the two
heroes and the goals to be reached by the plot.
When comparing the similarities between the two epics, The Iliad and the Aeneid, one of the most
obvious is the setting of which they each take place. They are a part of the same era, one where the
world was chaotic and still needed the frivolous gods to meddle. The Trojan War with its destructive
power was a significant setting in both poems and led to the development of each respective plot. In
the face of the dreads of the warfare in both epics, even the most powerful of warriors will experience
fear, and the poets tell the audience details that both armies regret that the war ever began. The Iliad
took place during the actual war. It is very much centralized around the occurrences of the war.
Though the status of fighting a war is glorified, the men can be seen dying ghastly deaths; women
becoming enslaved and shamed, and families torn apart. Ah, put no faith in anything the will of the
gods opposes! See, Priam s virgin

  • 2. The Reality Of Reality Television Essay Reality television is now one of the most consumed television genres broadcasted to the general public. Reality television has become more about mindless watching and creating the most unrealistic environment possible, rather than creating a show for an important purpose. Today, shows like Beauty and the Geek, Big Brother, and every other reality show fit into this mold, but when viewed critically lessons appear. In the case of TV today, reality shows depict an altered reality because of the unrealistic situations this genre presents. Firstly, Beauty and the Geek claimed they conducted the ultimate social experiment, and yet is still considered as a show in the genre of reality TV. Since Beauty and the Geek subsisted as a social experiment, altered variables, such as the environment, influenced participants to conduct themselves in a different way than how they would behave on a regular basis in reaction to the stimuli the show provided. Contestants altered their behavior by sharing a bed with a stranger, and they acted friendly because they were now living with strangers in a home with cameras, so they felt they needed to impress. Beauty and the Geek is comparable to Big Brother because they were both filmed under altered conditions. For Big Brother specifically, the contestants participated under a much more controlled environment by being locked into a compound that was cut off from the rest of the outside world. This meant no TVs, phones, computers, etc., which makes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Maggie and Dee; Two Sisters, Two Worlds Essay February 24, 2010 Maggie and Dee; Two Sisters, Two Worlds The genuine appreciation of heritage and family is the focus of Alice Walker s Everyday Use . Dee and Maggie s characters are the vessels that Walker uses to demonstrate the difference between appreciating possessions for their usefulness as well as their personal significance and their contrasting value as a trendy, materialistic connection. There is a palpable difference between Maggie and Dee, both in physical appearance as well as in personality traits and their treatment of the personal artifacts that come into play within the story is very telling of this. Maggie, who is self conscious of her appearance, and will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maggie who knows how to quilt and chewed checkerberry snuff, already knows what her life has to offer. Her knowledge of her future is derived from her knowledge of her ancestry. There appears to be no rancor in her acceptance of this. When the climactic scene occurs and Dee asks Can I have these quilts? (145), Maggie s first implied reaction is one of surprise and anger; I heard something fall in the kitchen, and a minute later the kitchen door slammed (145). But as someone never used to winning anything, or having anything reserved for her (146), Maggie succumbs and offers to let Dee have them. Although Maggie knows how to quilt (146), she is able to comprehend the deeper personal value of the quilts, and states that she can member Grandma Dee without the quilts (146). Despite their value as an item of everyday use, the quilts are meaningful to Maggie, much in the way they are to her mother who remembers having quilted them with Big Dee. The scraps, the bits and pieces and one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra s uniform that he wore in the Civil War. (145) hold deep significance to Maggie. Dee, on the other hand, is portrayed in a very different light by Walker. Commencing with her physical appearance; Dee is lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure (141). However, their differences do not end there. Dee is intelligent, ... • 4. Analysis Of The Gold Cat By Annie Dillard Dillard uses many unusual language choices to create more meaning in the story both in physical and figurative parts of the essay. While Dillard is in her bathroom calling attention to the spider s web, she uses both inversion and repetition, Her six inch mess of web works, works somehow, works miraculously, to keep her alive and me amazed (2). This sentence uses works repetitively in succession, this seems to reaffirm that the web is the device that captures the dead bugs and shows her awe towards the spider s mechanism. This sentence also uses inversion with the phrase me amazed, the words have been switched from the syntactically correct amazed me. Dillard also uses repetition not isolated in a single sentence to create meaning and emphasize the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Particularly by calling her cat gold, Dillard creates striking imagery since a cat is not often described as gold. This creates emphasis on the continued theme which capitalizes on the symbolism of the flame and the call to write that Dillard struggles with. Another instance of repetition appears in the repeated number sixteen. In the work itself, Dillard mentions that there are sixteen or so corpses she has tossed to the floor (2) and a novel about Rimbaud that had made me want to be a writer at when I was sixteen (5). Although not directly stated in the text, it is also important to note that Rimbaud, the subject of the book she read in the mountains, ran away at the age of sixteen. This most likely emphasizes the point Dillard is trying to make that by deciding to be a writer a huge sacrifice is made, just like how the dead bugs sacrificed themselves to be the spider s prey. Also in The Death of a Moth, Dillard not only continues to use the symbolism of candles throughout the narrative, she also mentions the number of candles or wicks numerically throughout her ... • 5. Jackson Pollock s Full Fathom Five Jackson Pollock s painting titled Full Fathom Five reveals black and silver splatters of paint that aren t necessarily straight. His painting includes colors such as blue, black, white and even specks of orange. In addition, there are no figures which can be easily deciphered and the paint seems to have been spilled all over the canvas. Thus, the painting does not display calculation or a heavy use of logic. Instead, his creation seems to thrive off creativity and disorder. So I ask, how do we make sense of such an unreasonable painting? The answer can be found within the philosophical ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche introduces to readers both the Apollonian force and the Dionysian force is his book The Birth of Tragedy. To be specific, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under these circumstances, Jackson Pollock s painting has a sense of musicality to it that adds onto the creative disorder. That is to say that his irrational paint splatters are almost rhythmic in the way they were splattered onto the canvas. Friedrich Nietzsche believes that this rhythm is very significant since it only occurs under the influence of the Dionysian force. This can be seen in the quote: The essence of nature is now to be expressed symbolically...not the mere symbolism of the lips, face, and speech but the whole pantomime of dancing, forcing every member into rhythmic movement, Then the other symbolic powers suddenly press forward, particularly those of music, in rhythmics, dynamics, and harmony (Cahn and Meskin 225). Nietzsche s quote tells us how the Dionysian force causes a dancer to exude harmony and rhythm. As dancers under the Dionysian influence would all dance together in unison, the paint splatters dance across the canvas in a way that makes it all come together. For this reason, when looking at Full Fathom Five, the paint starts to resemble musical dance rather than images or lines. While doing this, a part of what he experiences are advertisements that come on at an average of every ten minutes. These advertisements are usually used to persuade the costumer to buy something. They also might be used for the listener to do something that the advertisement is asking. Sometimes these advertisements can be hidden messages between or in television programs. This printing press idea quickly spread throughout Europe and later to the Americas (YouHis2). Afterwards, around the 1700s, when the use of newspapers began to be an everyday publication, advertisements started being printed in them, even if the advertisements were simple at the time. Newspapers became the first medium to be conquered by advertisement. In 1721, Benjamin Franklin founded the Pennsylvania Gazette, the second newspaper made in the Americas. What was special about it is that it had pictures accompanying the ads to help the people understand better their product, which was the difference with his close relative, The Boston Gazette, which had pictureless ads (YouHis3). Since the eighteenth century, most newspapers have relied on advertisements for part of their profit, and they have been developing advertising bit by bit. Following the example of the newspapers, radio programming began using advertisements. These advertisements were very slow and repetitive sonnets that companies used to get people to know their products. These advertisements started in the late 1800s, with their lengths being fairly short. They never extended past a minute. To compensate for the brevity of the ads, companies would repeat the same ad many times between radio programs. Then, the invention of television came along. Analysis Of The Book Gladwell Maddy Rigby Smith AP English III 30 November 2014 In his previous book, Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase tipping point , meaning the moment when an idea or concept suddenly becomes popular within the general populace, and in his following book, he gives us the term Outliers which means something that lies outside of the normal or the expected. In his book Blink, Gladwell provides us with two more phrases; thin slicing and blink. To blink is to act without thinking, working on split second decisions to make choices. Thin slicing is using the small amount of information that is known to come to a conclusion without further searching for more information. According to Gladwell, snap judgements often provide better decisions than well informed, over analysed ones, which is ironic in our generation of information overload. The book, in the way that Gladwell s books tend to do, opens with an anecdote, this one opening much like a detective novel, talking extensively about the discovery of a statue and about the group of analysers that were initially fooled by it, coming to believe that it had shown to be genuine after much study. After their extensive studying, they were sure in their deduction, but another group came into the picture soon after and looked at it or blinked and declared it a fake and a forgery and ended up being right. Population Growth in South Florida and Salt Water Intrusion Introduction Rapid population growth in South Florida has significantly increased the demand for water and the strain on the fresh groundwater supplies has triggered more saltwater intrusion to the Biscayne aquifer. Saltwater intrusion has been one the main contaminant that continues to endanger the Biscayne aquifer. It has occurred as a result of the followings: the over pumping by wells, the construction of drainage canals, and the lowering of the water table by drought. Ongoing efforts by South Florida water agencies to protect the aquifer from saltwater intrusion include groundwater monitoring, water management and conservation. What many do not know is that a single person can take ownership of someone in their youth. It has been allowed for a while, yet many people who I have asked are not knowledgeable on the subject. People who plan to adopt or have kids in the future can benefit from this. It is an awesome way to have a child at any stage of life. I know that many people are looking to have children but cannot because of one reason or another. The problem is, some people say that one parent isn t enough to raise a child. With more issues happening in the world, people tend to worry more about how each child will be when they grow up. Equally, I get where people are coming from if they believe that. Some citizens totally disagree that a person can adopt alone. They argue that every child needs two people to look out for them. According to that mindset, mentally a parent cannot raise a child on their own. Raising children is also physically tough too. It is felt to be that way because the energy, money, and love that they need to give the child. • 17. The Philosophy Of Descartes Meditations Descartes Meditations is said to be the beginning of Western Philosophy. His writings are still greatly referred to to this day, and he is most famous for his quote cogito ergo sum which translates to I think, therefore I am. Each of Descartes meditations are followed by objections from other theologists and philosophers, and thereon followed by replies from Descartes. Some objections are made stronger than others, for example, Thomas Hobbes, and it could be doubted whether or not Descartes truly was able to successfully counter Hobbes objections. Hobbes wrote the third set of objections on all six of Descartes meditations, and in some cases making multiple objections within one meditation. Descartes first meditation concerns those things that can be called into doubt. It is in this mediation that Descartes relays all of which he previously believed in his life that could be false. He, in turn, decides that it would be best if he forgo all of his beliefs that could be false and begin again by starting with more certain bases. Descartes discusses his belief that though the senses are what we base our most certain knowledge on, the senses can be deceptive; for example, we sense things in dreams just as we do when we are awake. Hobbes objects to this meditation by saying if we leave out reason and only take into account our senses, then doubt is what follows; however, Plato had already come out with the idea of sensory deception as it applies to dreams, and so all ... Christian Persecution In The Early Church For the third year in a row, the modern persecution of Christians worldwide has hit another record high according to Christianity Today (Persecution in the Early Church). Right now, it is very dangerous to be a Christian in some countries of the world. Countries in Asia and the Middle East show the most violence towards Christians. If history really does repeat itself, Christianity will grow in numbers and in faith. More people will convert and the religion as a whole will be strengthened. Christians have continued to be persecuted sporadically throughout history. Christian persecution is more evident now more than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One instance of the occasional persecution was in 112 AD when Pliny The Younger was the Roman governor of Bithynia. ...Pliny condemned to immediate execution those who confessed to being Christians. He believed that Christianity itself was punishable, but the defiant, martyr attitude of the accused left [him] in no doubt that his action was right (Persecution in the Early Church). He would give people three chances to deny their beliefs, if they didn t they would be killed. They were sent to the same torturous deaths as Nero used. Pliny the Younger began to send letters to the Emperor Trajan, explaining his methods in hopes of approval. In one of his most famous letters, he wrote, Meanwhile, in the case of those who were denounced to me as Christians, I have observed the following procedure: I interrogated these as to whether they were Christians; those who confessed I interrogated a second and a third time, threatening them with punishment; those who persisted I ordered executed (Pliny on the Christians). Martyrs were very common at this point in time. Granted, people would deny Christ in order to keep their lives, but many more would hold firm in their beliefs until ... • 31. Analysis of the Closet Scene in Hamlet the Movie Essay Hamlet is often seen as one of the most well known examples of an Oedipus Complex presented in literature. The reasons for this is probably because of the plot that resolves around the revenge that Hamlet has against his step father Claudius and because of the relationship that Hamlet has with his mother that is loaded with sexual energy. Hamlet s love for his mother is especially exemplified by the Mel Gibson s interpretation of the infamous closet scene. Traditionally a Queen s closet was not worth emphasizing a bedroom, but it is likely that most of the readers would presume that the closet scene takes place in Gertrude?s bedroom because of the obsession that Hamlet has about Gertrude?s bed. When Hamlet responds to his mother?s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the last kiss is given, the camera angle turns to have the bed as well as the two figures kissing in the picture. Gertrude by the bed is the last focus of the camera you see when the scene ends. Richardson?s Hamlet is not as much preoccupied with sexuality than Olivier?s or the Zeffirelli?s Hamlet. The relationship between Gertrude and Hamlet in this film seems more impersonal than the others. The viewer experience much more hate from Hamlet towards Gertrude in this film that explains why Richardson left out a lot of the dialogue at the end of the scene, because he wanted the focus to be more on the beginning of the scene where Hamlet?s words are much harsher towards Gertrude, than at the end of it. At the end of the scene Hamlet accentuates the words: ?I must be cruel to be kind? that demonstrate the point. The bed is not very prominent in Richardson?s version of Hamlet that indicates that he did not want the viewer to focus on the on the sexual connotation that goes with the bed. It is true on the other hand that Gertrude and Hamlet lied on the bed at the end of the scene, but the viewer gets the feeling that it was more an indicator of the intimacy that goes with a normal mother and son relationship than an Oedipus Complex case. Hamlet cried like a little boy that lost his father and not like a lover that lost his mistress. • 34. Labor Unions and Relevance Labor Unions and Relevance In the United States, labor unions are seeing an increased amount of controversy surrounding their helpfulness to the U.S. economy. Recently, comparisons between the successes of a company such as Toyota versus Ford have brought the issue of unions to the forefront. Many cite the cost Ford has due to the fact that the employees are unionized and receive more benefits at a higher cost to the company. On the other hand, many people see great benefit for Americans who are protected under a union contract; however, it is possible to create a work environment that is successful, safe, fair, and beneficial to employees without being a union shop. The following meeting essentially turned into a gripe festival in which the employee complained about the management, fellow employees, the workload, and the lack of recognition for a job well done. Fortunately, this issue went no further. Unfortunately for this organization, most filed complaints are more closely related to people being upset about being rightly disciplined than the company truly committing acts contrary to the negotiated contract. The actual relevance that unions have in today s society is shrinking, not only in numbers or employee attitudes, but politically as well. In the Journal of Labor Research, Hurd and Pinnock (2004) dissect the reasons for the shrinking affect unions have in politics. They say that after George W. Bush became president, his administration worked to the disband National Partnership Council, which was set in place to promote positive relationships with federal unions. The result of the actions from the Bush administration is a labor movement that is less unified and therefore likely to be less effective on the political front (Hurd and Pinnock, 2004). I have no personal influences or biases that affected my opinion of the film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no overtones that should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise. • 37. Comparing The Iliad And The Aeneid Homer once said, Two urns on Jove s high throne have ever stood, the source of evil one, and one of good; from thence the cup of mortal man he fills, blessings to these, to those distributes ills; to most he mingles both. What the great philosopher is establishing is that the source of good and evil are the same while being different. Reminiscent of how The Iliad and the Aeneid are both epic poems that share similarities such as the setting, the reoccurring motif of gods, as well as aspects like the two heroes and the goals to be reached by the plot. When comparing the similarities between the two epics, The Iliad and the Aeneid, one of the most obvious is the setting of which they each take place. They are a part of the same era, one where the world was chaotic and still needed the frivolous gods to meddle. The Trojan War with its destructive power was a significant setting in both poems and led to the development of each respective plot. In the face of the dreads of the warfare in both epics, even the most powerful of warriors will experience fear, and the poets tell the audience details that both armies regret that the war ever began. The Iliad took place during the actual war. It is very much centralized around the occurrences of the war. Though the status of fighting a war is glorified, the men can be seen dying ghastly deaths; women becoming enslaved and shamed, and families torn apart. Ah, put no faith in anything the will of the gods opposes! See, Priam s virgin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
