Impact Of St Augustine Of Hippo
A very influential and great philosopher and theologian of Late Antiquity, Saint Augustine of Hippo is
the most important of the Latin Church Fathers. His works, especially his Confessions (a self
biography), On Christian Doctrine and City of God, helped distinguish the Church in Western Europe
from the Church as it developed elsewhere. In Ancient Rome, the power of speech was appropriated
from the Greeks and expanded upon and innovated. The classical master of rhetoric would be the
work of St. Augustine which aid in the expansion and spread of Christianity. W. R. Johnson has called
Augustine the last of the great ancient rhetoricians. Augustine public speaking was cicero s, while his
messages were rooted in Christian theology. According to James J. Murphy, Augustine in himself, in

St. Augustine was a major Christian theorist who argued that it would be foolish for truth to take its
stand unarmed against falsehood. Augustine argued that the human mind apprehends universal,
objective, unchanging, and necessary truths that are superior to the human mind itself. Thus, an eternal
God exists to explain these eternal truths, whereas his thoughts profoundly influenced the medieval
worldview. He defended the use of rhetoric and helped to preserve its study and usage. St. Augustine
believed that human beings communicate through signs and persuading Christians to lead a holy life.
St. Augustine believes truth comes from the divine and believes scripture to be divinely inspired, set
down by magnificent men through whom the divine speaks. Augustine s role in the Christianization of
rhetoric reveals clearly that Augustine thought the art of eloquence should be put into active service,
and not rejected out of hand because it is tainted with paganism. He wants to offer guidance to those
who will be treating the Scriptures, and who must offer explanations of the sacred writings to others.
He looks to advise his clergy on a way of

Nomadic Human Hazing
Introduction
What is hazing? As stated by Alvarez D.M. (2015) hazing can be defined as the practice of initiating
new members into a group, often through harassment and humiliation . (p.43) However, if hazing is so
bad why is it still around, wouldn t an intelligent society discontinue harmful practices? Both the act
of hazing and the willingness to be hazed are rooted in the deepest parts of human nature. Any social
animal relies on its group members to survive. New members of a group are thoroughly vetted in all
social species; this can be seen most clearly in wolves. A lone wolf attempting to join a new pack must
follow a certain form of behaviors, if the new wolf is not deemed worthy it is either driven off or
killed. Ancient nomadic humans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would be used as an additional form of correction for offenders (Mowrey, R., 2012. The general
form of punishment for hazing is dismissal from the organization (Mowrey, R., 2012.) This is not the
same as dismissal from the school, generally a person is dismissed from a fraternity, sorority, team or
community they were a part of. This form a punishment, though a strong deterrent, has its drawbacks
although common, the dismissal approach fails to address the harm done to the affect communities,
such as the team, school, or organization. (Mowrey, R., 2012). Restorative justice is not some mythical
state that requires chanting and incense. What would happen is that the offenders and the affected
parties would meet after the original punishment. The affected person or persons would state exactly
what they were thinking during the hazing and what they need to feel right again (Mowrey, R., 2012).
The offender would not be left voiceless, they would be given time to speak about what they were
thinking and what they feel is just repayment. This sounds like it might just be a waste of time, but it
is actually proven to decrease revenge acts against victims, it also increases the amount of satisfaction
victims feel with their cases (Mowrey, R., 2012). Often the perpetrators offer genuine statements of
remorse (Mowrey, R.,

The Theme Of Education In The Film Waiting For Superman
In the American public school system students are failing and society is doing nothing but taking a
blind eye to the injustice. In the film, Waiting For Superman, director, Davis Guggenheim,
investigates the various ways these schools are producing failing students in the United States. By
following the stories of five children throughout the documentary we, the viewers, begin to take notice
of the corrupt public school system as the children experience the inequalities of a low income school
first hand. Guggenheim uses audio and pop up animations to effectively argue his claim and motivate
the audience to change the way public schools are being operated.
The audio in this film plays a huge role in how the audience perceives the information they are
obtaining. Whether it is a lack of sound, or an upbeat song it creates an atmosphere or tone for that
segment of the movie. Throughout the film aside from the statistics and the lives of the children being
shown, Guggenheim incorporates clips from old tv shows, presidential speeches and more. When
these clips are being viewed an energetic and quick song is being played. The information presented in
these clips happens to be statements about how the president s believe they want to be the education
president or the clips express happy faces of children learning and smiling teachers. Guggenheim
presents the fact that up until the 1970 s, American public schools were the best in the world while
children are doing experiments

How To Cute Pets Changed My Life
At the beginning of my life; I was sewed, stuffed and dressed at a company called Cute Pets. Then, I
was sent to a store called Toys R US; which is where my old owner s mom got me from for $5.50. I
was for her little girl s birthday, so I was put into a purple sparkly gift bag. On, December 20th of
2014 she was turning 5 years old. Her Name was Annie, and when she opened the bag I saw that she
had bright blonde hair and glimmering blue eyes. She took me straight to her room, where she played
with me and her other toys; Mr.Snuggle the Bear, Bluey the Whale and Clarice the Porcelain Doll. She
also named me Snowbell After that day, she would always play tea and set us all up in tiny toy chairs.

Analysis Of Plumpy Nut By Sarah Morrison
Sarah Morrison first proclaims that Plumpy Nut, a peanut paste, is a huge breakthrough in the fight
against child hunger. First used during a famine in Niger, Plumpy Nut now reaches two million
malnourished children. Morrison heralds Plumpy Nut for its simplicity. The peanut based paste does
not require any fresh water to be swallowed. Additionally, Plumpy Nut stays fresh after opening, and it
does not need to be cooked or kept cool. The paste, which contains sugar, vegetable fat, vitamins, and
minerals, can be given to any malnourished child from anyone. Citing experts, Morrison writes that
Plumpy Nut has already altered how starving children are cared for. Treatment no longer has to take
place at a hospital; Plumpy Nut can be administered

The Indonesian National Awakening
Kebangkitan Nasional Indonesia, or the Indonesian National Awakening began in the early Twentieth
Century. The success of Indonesia s budding nationalism belongs to the ability to use existing the
institutions, urbanization and transportation around Java and Sumatra, and the otherness of
colonization. Initially groups such as Sarekat Islam were founded to fulfill community needs, but
shortly morphed into a way for the natives of the Dutch East Indies to unite and organize. Later,
students at STOVIA (School for the Training of Indonesian Doctors) began to form political and
philosophical organizations such as Boedi Oetomo, which advocated for independence of the East
Indies. Leo Suryadinata, as well as countless other Indonesian scholars, asserted that these were
essential for the formation of Nationalism in modern Indonesia. Such groups emphasized a united
Indonesia, rather than focusing on the numerous ethnicities that belong to the archipelago. This sense
of budding nationalism was encouraged during Japanese occupation. Thus, following the end of the
World War II and the return of the East Indies to the Dutch, Indonesia began a violent, five year long
war for independence. The hardships of war echoed the shared sense of identity and community
amongst Indonesians and continues to be a crucial component of Indonesian nationalism today.
Although the history of early Indonesian nationalism is generally agreed upon, there are varying
approaches following the nations

Key Sustainability Challenges Of Colep
1. The Sustainability Challenge
Moving from corporate to business unit level, the key point is the definition of a strategy to win in the
market and be competitive how the BU wins in the market place? (Porter, 1996), (Luecke, 2005). In
order to drive increase revenues through customer satisfaction it is required that companies have a
market oriented strategy. This typically derives from understanding and meeting customer needs
(Kotler and Keller, 2006). In order to successfully outperform the market, best practices suggest that a
combination between inside out (company to market) and outside in analysis (market to company)
should be considered to define a winning strategy (Titov and Protsiv, 2006). From an inside out
analysis it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the kick off of The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) in 2008, Unilever has been
focusing its business strategy on the need to develop solutions to some of the world s deep social and
environmental challenges. According Unilever (2014), the success of their business relies on finding
sustainable solutions to support long term growth. They target to double the size of the business while
reducing the environmental footprint (Unilever, 2014). In 2013 Unilever launched the compressed
deodorant aerosol spray technology, a sustainable solution which resulted in less impact to the
environment. According to the LCA studies, if 1 million of people switched to compressed deodorants
and assuming each person uses in average 5 units a year, there would be a reduction of 696 tonnes of
CO2 in the air (Unilever, 2013). However, Unilever recognizes that to achieve great solutions there
must be partnerships with both suppliers and customers; a complete value chain analysis (Unilever,
2014). Important to highlight that from a business point of view, Unilever experienced tremendous
growth since they start their sustainability plan (Karlsson and Luttropp, 2006). Other companies are
following a similar path on sustainability such as Colep. By supporting customers to achieve their
objectives, Colep s

Introduction
A man was running walking to his destination and came across a mountain. He could hear the sounds
of those who were chasing him. The mountain like a colossus stood defiantly in his path. All that he
had was a rope and no equipment to climb the mountain. It was either climb the mountain or risk
being caught. There was no other way to reach his destination. He looked at the mountain and made a
decision. He placed his hand upon the rock and started his ascent up the mountain.
Some people saw the man climbing the mountain from a distance and laughed at him. The man
ignored his critics and moved upon the rock. Inch by inch, he climbed the mountain. Soon his hands
were sore, his feet hurting but he kept on climbing. He had no resources but his rope, his strength and
his mind. Many hours later, he stood upon the summit of the mountain. He did not climb the mountain
because the mountain was there. He climbed the mountain with no resources because he had no
choice.
Growth Hackers like the man climbing the mountain have to grow rapidly because they

Before Dna Testing Existed In Aid Of Crime Solving, Simple
Before DNA testing existed in aid of crime solving, simple logic was used, but since the late 1800s,
DNA testing has advanced. DNA analysis is used for comparing samples from a crime scene to a
database of possible offenders. Forensic scientists have developed various technologies for analyzing
offenders DNA, such as the Combined DNA Index System, the Automated Fingerprint Identification
System, the National Integrated Ballistics Identification Network, and trace evidence. These systems
help investigators by linking previously unrelated cases ( Morton and Hilts 29).
The Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS, is an arrangement that links DNA between various

NIBIN originated from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives Integrated
Ballistic Identification System and from the Federal Bureau of Investigation s Drugfire Cartridge Case
Imaging System. Depending on the severity of the case, NIBIN can search across the United States or
in local areas for information.
Because there are so many technological and scientific advances in forensics, it is easier to be pinned
down for a crime. Another reason why the total number of serial murders has decreased is that modern
forensics makes it difficult to get away with such crimes.
The public s interest in serial murders gives room for the media to make an enticing story line. The
media hires talking heads, who speak on serial murder cases. These talking heads call themselves
experts, but tend to be enthusiasts. They usually don t have any actual facts from an investigation, and
this leads to a lot of misconceptions about serial killers themselves. Some misconceptions include that
serial killers are loners, are insane or smart, and that they are only motivated by sex. These
misconceptions initiated by the media s talking heads make serial killers seem more interesting when
most serial killers take initiative in their communities, have many motives,

polls showing more than half the country is in favor of legalizing marijuana. The Drug Policy Alliance
(DPA) believes marijuana should be removed from the criminal justice system and regulated like
alcohol and tobacco.
What s going on? The drug war is responsible for hundreds of billions of wasted taxes dollars and
misallocated government spending, as well as devastating human costs that far outweigh the damage
caused by drugs alone. The United States unrivaled incarceration rate is a constant financial drain,
causing an immeasurable loss in workforce productivity, and puts a strain on scant legal and law
enforcement resources. While the federal government spends, billions trying to reduce the demand for
illegal drugs through prohibition, treatment consistently proves to be a more effective, cheaper and
more humane way to lower the demand for illegal drugs.

adults. Students need drug education that respects their intelligence and gives them

The Elements Of Democracy In Ancient Sparta And Athens
According to Brand (2010) there were very different political models in ancient Sparta and Athens.
Indeed, he advises that Athens was a much more developed powerhouse, where today s democracy
initiated, whereby Sparta was, conversely, a fierce warmongering state where only male warriors
participated in politics. However, Brand also acknowledges elements of democracy in both city states.
In the case of Sparta, the ecclesia , or the apella were the eligible voting public (Larkin, n.d.) Only
Spartan free men of adulthood were able to vote, and adulthood was granted on the Spartan s 30th
birthday. Additionally, women, immigrants and unequals such as Helots were ineligible to vote
(Brand, 2010.) In this instance we see the basic semblance of a voting public, but, as Brand (2010)
states, whilst the apella met once a month to discuss issues, their scope of influence was severely
limited. The Spartan political model was a hierarchy of two kings (historically from two ancient ruling
families) whose balance was kept in check by three (later) five Ephors who were elected annually, and
who kept the kings power at a moderate level (Brand, 2010.) Beneath the Ephors were the Gerousia .
According to Larkin (n.d.), It consisted of 28 Gerontes (Senators... elders over the age of 60) plus two
kings. These elders were elected by the Assembly for life. The Gerousia controlled much of the public
business and decided on what the Assembly could debate. They could also veto actions taken

Thomas Hobbes And The Enlightenment
Can you imagine America with a monarchy? Can you imagine America with a king? All the power
possessed by a single individual. This means that there will be no voting on who should be a leader,
but the power goes from one to the other by inheritance. There will be a king fulfilling his role as a
supreme leader by surrounding himself with people who will help him govern. This is hard to
imagine, but Enlightenment thinkers expressed their opinions on different questions related to this.
The Enlightenment was an era from 1600 to 1800. It was a break from strictness of the Catholic
Church and a period of intelligence and business growth in Europe. It grew out of the Renaissance,
especially humanists. During this era, there were philosophers who were known as Enlightenment
thinkers. They thought about two questions. First, are people naturally good or evil? Second, what
type of government is best? Thomas Hobbes, an Englishman born in 1588, is one of the
Enlightenment thinkers. Hobbes wrote The Leviathan, published in 1651, observing the violence and
behavior of people near the end of the English Civil War. He believed that monarchy is the best
government. John Locke, another Enlightenment thinker, is an Englishman born in 1632. Locke wrote
Two Treatises of Government, published in 11689,expressing his opinions on the state of nature and
types of government. He, on the other hand, believed that democracy is the best government. While

Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States. Born on May 8, 1884, in Lamar,
Missouri, he was the oldest of three children. Truman had no middle name. His parents apparently
gave him the middle initial S to appease two family relatives.
At age six, his family moved to Independence, Missouri, where he attended Sunday school. There he
met five year old Elizabeth Wallace, with whom he later fell in love with. Beginning school at age
eight, Truman modeled thick glasses to correct his poor eyesight. Fortunately, his eyesight did not

In April of 1919, Truman returned home, now as a major. On June 28th of the same year, he married
Elizabeth Wallace, his Sunday school love.
Truman decided to spark his political career. So he started by entering a four way Democratic primary
for a judgeship, which was essentially a job supervising roads and buildings. His popularity was
expected to increase if he got the support of the Ku Klux Klan, but Truman turned down this idea.
Even so, by campaigning his wartime record and his past history, Truman won the primary of the
election. In January of 1923, he was sworn into his first public office. One year later his only daughter,
Mary Margaret, was born. During his time as a judge, he improved roads and reduced the inherited
debt. By staying interested in the National Guard, he was promoted to colonel.
Next, Truman tested his luck in the Senate. After a long and hard battle, Truman defeated a
Republican opponent with the help of the New Deal. In January of 1935, he was sworn in as a Senator
from Missouri. His arrival in Washington was met with disdain. Colleagues didn t think he was

Who s For The Game By Jesse Pope Essay
Patriotism has been defined as the cultural attraction and devotion to ones homeland. Eager young
men lined the streets, waiting for their turn to show their devotion to their country, by signing up for
World War 1. As the war progressed, views on Patriotism changed. Different views on patriotism were
expressed throughout the war using poetry and media. There was a trending pattern of soldiers who
were eager to sign up, egged on by the guilt tripping propaganda spoon fed to them by government
controlled media. The war trudged on and soldiers faced the true struggles of war. Realisation hit
them, and they started to question whether the lives of their friends and themselves may not be worth
defending their country. The popular view of war at the time is reflected in Jesse Pope s poem Who s
for the Game? The strong patriotic views favoured during World War 1 are portrayed in this poem.
Jesse Pope was an admired propagandist. She wrote dynamic poems and stories to entrap people into
the belief that signing up for the Great War was an honour, and a manly thing to do. In her well
received poem Who s for the Game? she uses rhetorical questions to make men question why ... Show

Langston Hughes Tales Of Simple And The Symbolic Undertone
Tales of Simple and the Symbolic Undertone
Langston Hughes is considered to be one of the most well known poets/writers in the modern era. One
of his most notable works was a series of fictional short stories called Tales of Simple. In these tales,
Hughes uses symbolism to express his feelings and views on African American history through the
character Jesse B. Semple. In literary terms, the word symbolism is defined as being a person, object
or event that suggests more than its literal meaning. In Langston Hughes Tales of Simple , the author
uses the main character s name, feet and view on a type of Jazz music to symbolize the life of an
African American and the effect of slavery, discrimination and racism on blacks. One of the ... Show

The point Hughes makes was that a black man during that time was focused on work and providing
for himself and his family. And work was done while standing. Hughes shows that the true tale of an
African American was at the physical foundation of a person: the feet. The symbolic nature of Simples
feet goes beyond the mindset of African Americans at that time. Hughes uses Simple s feet to
symbolize the poverty experienced by blacks. These feet have walked ten thousand miles working for
white folks and another ten thousand keeping up with the colored. These feet have stood at altars, crap
tables, free lunches, bars, graves, kitchen doors, betting windows, hospital clinics, WPA desks, social
security railings, and in all kinds of lines from soup lines to the draft. (100)
As the title of the tale states, Simple s feet do have their own life. Not only do Simple s feet showcase
the thousands of miles working for white folks, but they also tell the tales of where he has been when
not working. All of the aforementioned places are either associated with poverty or things viewed as
aid by society. Hughes uses this to symbolize the negative connotation attached to African Americans
because of the poverty most encountered at the time. Langston Hughes symbolizes the life of hard
labor lived by a black man through the continued reference to Simple s feet: The corns I ve cut away
would dull a German razor. The bunions I forgot would make you ache from now

The Quiet American Movie Vs Book
Philip Noyce s version of Graham Greene s novel The Quiet American to film was a large success. It
stayed pretty close to the book, and kept the personalities of the character s the same. What I respected
about the movie was that the director chose to film in actual Vietnamese locations and without
compromise, boldly sticking to the novel by not letting the Americans come out of the story too
kindly. It was filmed greatly and he captured so many details of Vietnam. Brenden Fraiser and

Fowler in the movie. He plays an aging unmotivated but skilled reporter very good. On the other hand
Fowler in the film is a lot more vulnerable, especially as the film goes on, and his weaknesses begins
to show. The movie never shows Fowler telling Pyle how he feels about Phuong. He says that he is
detached but then becomes very involved in what is going on around him. With that action I feel it
shows that he does care about Phuong but doesn t know how to handle it. Thomas Fowler is a
complex character, and it is hard to compare him to his character in the book. The movie doesn t show
his personality and depth of character as the book does. The movie portrays him more likeable with
more dignity and less bitter. Fowler s character does still give us that deep sense of how the political

Essay on Solar Energy
Solar Energy
Solar energy is the most ancient kind of energy found on earth, for it is as old as the sun. quot;Solar
quot; means from the sun. The earth is only one of the many planets which is bathed in the sun s
overflowing energy. Every second the world receives 95.8 trillion watts of power...just think about that
for a minute. Think about how much power the earth just received in the time it took you to read this
sentence? It is well beyond the amount of power used in one day. It has the potential to satisfy all our
energy needs forever without ever having to use the pollutive fossil fuels ever again. quot; The
problem however, does not lie in the limited source, as do fossil fuels, but in harnessing ... Show more

In the 1690 s an Italian scientist invented a solar furnace that was so hot it could shatter a diamond,
one of the hardest substances on earth (Asimov 119).
The real question around the beginning of the 19th century concerning solar energy was quot;could
the sun produce electricity directly? quot; The main motivation behind this desire was that electricity
could be stored in a battery, and used later. It would not be necessary to use the device in the sunlight.
All inventions failed, until Frank Shuman, an engineer from Pennsylvania finally made a
breakthrough. He built an experimental plant that used black troughs covered in glass with a few
inches of water. When exposed to the sun, the water got very hot, causing it to circulate and power an
electric generator. His data was so convincing that he got financial backers and built the world s first
solar electric power plant in Egypt. However, the Eastern Sun Power Company went out of business
even though it was using free fuel. It didn t produce enough electricity for the area that it used, 14,000
sq. ft of sun collecting land (Zweibel 48).
In 1954 Bell Laboratories invented the first photovoltaic (or solar) cell, made from the semi conductor
silicon, and other elements. It was the first way to convert sunlight directly into electricity. When the
space program was launched in the 60 s, it

Lean Burn Combustion
Lean burn refers to the use of lean mixtures in an internal combustion engine. The air fuel ratios can
be as high as 65:1, so the mixture has considerably less fuel in comparison to the stoichiometric
combustion ratio (14.7:1 for petrol for example). Contents[hide] * 1 Principle * 2 Chrysler Lean Burn

Heavy duty lean burn gas engines admit as much as 75% more air than theoretically needed for
complete combustion into the combustion chambers. The extremely weak air fuel mixtures lead to
lower combustion temperatures and therefore lower NOx formation. While lean burn gas engines offer
higher theoretical thermal efficiencies, transient response and performance may be compromised in
certain situations. Lean burn gas engines are almost always turbocharged, resulting high power and
torque figures not achieveable with stoichiometric engines due to high combustion temperatures.
Heavy duty gas engines may employ precombustion chambers in the cylinder head. A lean gas and air
mixture is first highly compressed in the main chamber by the piston. A much richer, though much
lesser volume gas/air mixture is introduced to the precombustion chamber and ignited by spark plug.
The flame front spreads to the lean gas air mixture in the cylinder.
This two stage lean burn combustion produces low NOx and no particulate emissions. Thermal
efficiency is better as higher compression ratios are achieved.
Manufacturers of heavy duty lean burn gas engines include GE Jenbacher, MAN Diesel amp; Turbo,
Wärtsilä, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Rolls Royce plc.

The Nature Of Science Vs. Religion
No One Man Can Have All That Power
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath
of life, and the man became a living being (Genesis 2:7). In Genesis God created humans from his
own likeness from the dust of the ground in H.G Wells The Island of Dr. Moreau, the main character
Dr. Moreau is given the perception of God as he also creates humans. He does the however through
science as he uses vivisection, the live dissection of animals, to convert animals into people we call
beast people. Through this creation process he brainwashes these beast people to have them believe he
is as said in Revelation, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the
End (Revelation 22:13). Wells, a known atheist, pushes the limits of science vs religion; Wells argues
that man s hubris in thinking that science can replace religion will lead to their downfall. Dr. Moreau
creates these beast, makes them follow his set of rules and ultimately is there judge, jury and
executioner if they break it.
Each religion has a distinct set of practices that make the religion unique, for the most part they all
believe in a higher even though in this book it was never formally established as a religion, they also
have a set of rules made by the higher power. The way H.G Wells sets up the island resembles most
Christianity, as they both have monotheistic views and have set of rules and practices that are keys in

Cubism, Orphism And Futurism Share A Common Language,...
The early 20th century in Europe was a time of rapid change. Modern art movements explored new
ways of communicating this new modern condition what is was like to live in an environment that was
advancing and developing with incrediable speed . Dynamism became a means for the artists of the
time to communicate what has been termed the modern condition.
Cubism, Orphism and Futurism share a common language, Dynamism. Dynamism is a mechanism for
communicating a sense of change or movement.. Artists also invested their own emotions of what they
were experiencing through the use of dynamism. Viewers can understand that there was an
excitement, anxiety and uncertainty associated with living this bustling, changing society. The
movements reflected societies appreciation and interest in freedom of movement in art across Europe
prior World War One. People were immensely excited by speed, technology and new forms of
transport and communication. They all felt the world around them was begining to quickly change.
The artists of the time employed dynamism in their works to express this rapid movement.
Cubism responded to the world changing at a revoulutionary speed dynamically communicated
through abstract art. Cubists disregarded traditonal ways of portraying a subject, and instead broke
down the subject matter into scattered shapes and objects. According to Spain s National Museum of
Art, Cubism demonstrated conclusively that the experience of moderity was bound to a dynamic and

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Deficit Spending
Deficit Spending and the Crowding Out Effect
Andrew L. Petereck
American Public University System
Abstract
Deficit spending applies to businesses, governments, and individuals alike. In relation to governments,
deficit spending refers to spending more money than taking in over a given period (Investopedia, n.d.).
Some Keynesian economists argue that deficits are a necessary evil needed to stimulate an economy.
In theory, the deficit spending fills a gap in consumer spending during a recession by increasing
government purchases to balance out the aggregate demand and stabilize the unemployment rate
(Investopedia, n.d.). However, the downsides to deficit spending include possibly lowering GDP and
increasing debt. Lastly, crowding out is known as the process where high government spending takes
opportunities away from private sectors, hence the name crowding out (Investopedia, n.d.). This paper
will explain some of the advantages and disadvantages to deficit spending while reviewing some of
the effects of crowding out in an economy. Keywords: deficit spending, crowding out,
Deficit Spending and the Crowding Out Effect The debate over the effectiveness of deficit spending
has been ongoing for years and will continue to be debated for years to come. Keynesian economists
argue deficit spending is necessary for the survival of an economy, claiming the economy would not
recover fast enough without it. Other economists argue an economy shouldn t

Essay on Employee Morale After Downsizing
Employee Morale After Downsizing
Downsizing has become a significant idea in today s economy and maintaining the trust of employees
when something like this takes place has also become very serious business (Brockner, Konovsky,
Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). The question is not whether a company should
downsize their employees but how to do the downsizing properly so that as few employees as possible
are injured (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). There are
several ways that companies can downsize that will help retain much of the loyalty of the workers that

Since 1979, this adds up to 43 million jobs in this country that have been removed and eliminated due
to downsizing (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). One point
one million of these jobs have been lost since 1987 in the defense industry due to budget cuts in the
government (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). In 1998, it
was expected that another 700,000 layoffs would take place in his government sector (Brockner,
Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). In order to put this in perspective it is
safe to say about that 50 percent more people have been victims of various layoffs and downsizing
than have been victims of violent crimes (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin,
amp; Bies, 1994). Downsizing in today s society is seen as a basic way of life for many United States
companies (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). There is
usually a first round of downsizing in many companies and this is often followed a short time later by
a second round of downsizing (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies,
1994). Sixty seven percent of the firms that cut their jobs in any given year will do the same again in
the following year (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994).

The United States, at the time of World War II, was facing an economic depression which concerned
the American public and President Roosevelt because they knew that America s involvement with the

unprepared (America and Word War II 610). However, due to the fact that while preparing for the war
there was an increase in economic growth, African Americans and women became more involved in
industry and the military, and President Roosevelt incorporated several acts and embargos that

(Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum). One social issue that was a problem in the
goal to become a united force for battle was the fact that the army was still segregated. In 1941, the
Double V campaign was introduced, which stated that by integrating African Americans into the army
it would accomplish two victories: a defeat over Hitler s racism overseas, and a victory over racism in
the homeland (America and World War II 616). What branched out of this campaign was an African
American unit in the army air force referred to as the 99th pursuit squadron, also known as the

preparedness for war. The Tuskegee Airmen became so successful throughout the war as bomber

important role in the overall success of the Allies over Germany (Haulman 21). Additionally, women,

For the last two weeks in class we have touched upon the topic of colonizing.we come to this topic
point by reading four different text to the virginian voyage , robinson crusoe , the white man,s burden ,

this it says where nature hath in store fowle, venison, and fish and the fruitfull st soyle... Three
harvests more all greater than you wish which is saying that they belive that there s going to be more
food and good weather for harvest. Another example to show that the colonizer believed it was going
to be a perfect land was in stanza nine it s where as the lushious smell of that delicious land , above
the seas that flowers, the cleere wind throwes, your hearts to swell approaching the deare stand. to sum
that up he believes that the land will have nice weather and beautiful land fulled with flower. And with
all of this they belive once they get there its all theirs, which leads us to the third question. Third
question that was given to us was how do the colonizers think that the colonized see them? . I claimed
that the colonized are not there but the people from their old country are. I claim this because they
think no one is there at all. For example whose reading shall inflame men to seeks fame this is

Effects Of Divorce On Children And Divorce
In today s world, most people accept divorce or separation as a way of life. Parents are unaware or do
not understand the damage it can have on their children. However, in some instances, it is better to get
out of an abusive relationship because that can be as toxic as divorce. On average, 50% of children
who are born with married parents, will experience divorce before the age of 18 (Children and
Divorce Baucom, 2010 2017). Along with divorce statistics, 40% of children in America are raised

their parents attention because they may feel like they have been forgotten in the middle of all of the

circumstances. However, through psychological evaluations, it has been found that children
experience behavioral issues when a divorce or separation occurs.
All children may experience behavioral issues at certain ages throughout their lives. Terrible two s,
terrible three s, meltdowns of young children, and outbursts of teenagers are all very common. Adding

My idea of school and community professionalism has changed drastically since starting observations

Dr. Mc J is a teacher who not only expects students to assume these academic standards but makes
strides to improve students understanding of them. Today (March 23) students gave presentations.
Each group presented a book; the plot, the theme, and who might like this sort of novel. Before
students went to present, she briefed them on the expectations (clear speech, eye contact, hit all points
of assignment etc.). Then she asked them about volunteering to present (Why should you volunteer to
go first?). Volunteering first sets a presentation standard and makes an impression on the instructor.
This helps students in an area that is not necessarily academic, but professional. Of course there were
other helpful instances, like when one student was not comfortable in front of the class. He seemingly
lost his voice. However, Dr. McJ told him to breathe, and take a second. Then she asked him to say at
least one thing for his assigned slides. Nothing more, but nothing less. This encouragement helped the
student to proceed and it showed the teacher s belief that all of her students could achieve. Just this
little push showed me she does not accept students saying I can t because she believes that they can.

Reflection Of The Indian Residential Community
What does it mean when, in a room full of young and aspirational leaders, not one individual identifies
as Indigenous? It s a sign of privilege. Privilege is who gets to be around the table, who is invited to
the conversation (Stonehouse, 2017). It s a division of opportunity based on a history of socialized
understandings of difference. But given this overwhelming landscape, Canada hopes to rewrite this
history, to guide and inspire Aboriginal peoples and Canadians in a process of reconciliation and
renewed relationships that are based on mutual understanding and respect (CC). This hope is
encapsulated in what is known as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The TRC represents a compilation of accounts that have come from the enduring legacy of Indian
Residential Schools (TRC, 2015). It is important because it calls to action the ways in which non
Aboriginal people think, perceive history, and understand difference (CC). With its inclusion of 94
calls to action, I am left wondering if these calls will be answered and by who. As both LaBoucane
and Stonehouse expressed, it s not just an Indigenous issue but a shared history (2017). This history
that is not well understood by many including myself. Therefore, I write this reflection with the intent
of exploring what my role is in terms of two areas; thought and action.
Thought implies the internal conversation I have with myself regarding my own beliefs and those I
hold for others. Often, these thoughts are

  • 2. Impact Of St Augustine Of Hippo A very influential and great philosopher and theologian of Late Antiquity, Saint Augustine of Hippo is the most important of the Latin Church Fathers. His works, especially his Confessions (a self biography), On Christian Doctrine and City of God, helped distinguish the Church in Western Europe from the Church as it developed elsewhere. In Ancient Rome, the power of speech was appropriated from the Greeks and expanded upon and innovated. The classical master of rhetoric would be the work of St. Augustine which aid in the expansion and spread of Christianity. W. R. Johnson has called Augustine the last of the great ancient rhetoricians. Augustine public speaking was cicero s, while his messages were rooted in Christian theology. According to James J. Murphy, Augustine in himself, in no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... St. Augustine was a major Christian theorist who argued that it would be foolish for truth to take its stand unarmed against falsehood. Augustine argued that the human mind apprehends universal, objective, unchanging, and necessary truths that are superior to the human mind itself. Thus, an eternal God exists to explain these eternal truths, whereas his thoughts profoundly influenced the medieval worldview. He defended the use of rhetoric and helped to preserve its study and usage. St. Augustine believed that human beings communicate through signs and persuading Christians to lead a holy life. St. Augustine believes truth comes from the divine and believes scripture to be divinely inspired, set down by magnificent men through whom the divine speaks. Augustine s role in the Christianization of rhetoric reveals clearly that Augustine thought the art of eloquence should be put into active service, and not rejected out of hand because it is tainted with paganism. He wants to offer guidance to those who will be treating the Scriptures, and who must offer explanations of the sacred writings to others. He looks to advise his clergy on a way of ... • 3. Nomadic Human Hazing Introduction What is hazing? As stated by Alvarez D.M. (2015) hazing can be defined as the practice of initiating new members into a group, often through harassment and humiliation . (p.43) However, if hazing is so bad why is it still around, wouldn t an intelligent society discontinue harmful practices? Both the act of hazing and the willingness to be hazed are rooted in the deepest parts of human nature. Any social animal relies on its group members to survive. New members of a group are thoroughly vetted in all social species; this can be seen most clearly in wolves. A lone wolf attempting to join a new pack must follow a certain form of behaviors, if the new wolf is not deemed worthy it is either driven off or killed. Ancient nomadic humans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would be used as an additional form of correction for offenders (Mowrey, R., 2012. The general form of punishment for hazing is dismissal from the organization (Mowrey, R., 2012.) This is not the same as dismissal from the school, generally a person is dismissed from a fraternity, sorority, team or community they were a part of. This form a punishment, though a strong deterrent, has its drawbacks although common, the dismissal approach fails to address the harm done to the affect communities, such as the team, school, or organization. (Mowrey, R., 2012). Restorative justice is not some mythical state that requires chanting and incense. What would happen is that the offenders and the affected parties would meet after the original punishment. The affected person or persons would state exactly what they were thinking during the hazing and what they need to feel right again (Mowrey, R., 2012). The offender would not be left voiceless, they would be given time to speak about what they were thinking and what they feel is just repayment. This sounds like it might just be a waste of time, but it is actually proven to decrease revenge acts against victims, it also increases the amount of satisfaction victims feel with their cases (Mowrey, R., 2012). Often the perpetrators offer genuine statements of remorse (Mowrey, R., ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Theme Of Education In The Film Waiting For Superman In the American public school system students are failing and society is doing nothing but taking a blind eye to the injustice. In the film, Waiting For Superman, director, Davis Guggenheim, investigates the various ways these schools are producing failing students in the United States. By following the stories of five children throughout the documentary we, the viewers, begin to take notice of the corrupt public school system as the children experience the inequalities of a low income school first hand. Guggenheim uses audio and pop up animations to effectively argue his claim and motivate the audience to change the way public schools are being operated. The audio in this film plays a huge role in how the audience perceives the information they are obtaining. Whether it is a lack of sound, or an upbeat song it creates an atmosphere or tone for that segment of the movie. Throughout the film aside from the statistics and the lives of the children being shown, Guggenheim incorporates clips from old tv shows, presidential speeches and more. When these clips are being viewed an energetic and quick song is being played. The information presented in these clips happens to be statements about how the president s believe they want to be the education president or the clips express happy faces of children learning and smiling teachers. Guggenheim presents the fact that up until the 1970 s, American public schools were the best in the world while children are doing experiments ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Indonesian National Awakening Kebangkitan Nasional Indonesia, or the Indonesian National Awakening began in the early Twentieth Century. The success of Indonesia s budding nationalism belongs to the ability to use existing the institutions, urbanization and transportation around Java and Sumatra, and the otherness of colonization. Initially groups such as Sarekat Islam were founded to fulfill community needs, but shortly morphed into a way for the natives of the Dutch East Indies to unite and organize. Later, students at STOVIA (School for the Training of Indonesian Doctors) began to form political and philosophical organizations such as Boedi Oetomo, which advocated for independence of the East Indies. Leo Suryadinata, as well as countless other Indonesian scholars, asserted that these were essential for the formation of Nationalism in modern Indonesia. Such groups emphasized a united Indonesia, rather than focusing on the numerous ethnicities that belong to the archipelago. This sense of budding nationalism was encouraged during Japanese occupation. Thus, following the end of the World War II and the return of the East Indies to the Dutch, Indonesia began a violent, five year long war for independence. The hardships of war echoed the shared sense of identity and community amongst Indonesians and continues to be a crucial component of Indonesian nationalism today. Although the history of early Indonesian nationalism is generally agreed upon, there are varying approaches following the nations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(Porter, 1996), (Luecke, 2005). In order to drive increase revenues through customer satisfaction it is required that companies have a market oriented strategy. This typically derives from understanding and meeting customer needs (Kotler and Keller, 2006). It was either climb the mountain or risk being caught. There was no other way to reach his destination. He looked at the mountain and made a decision. • 14. The Elements Of Democracy In Ancient Sparta And Athens According to Brand (2010) there were very different political models in ancient Sparta and Athens. Indeed, he advises that Athens was a much more developed powerhouse, where today s democracy initiated, whereby Sparta was, conversely, a fierce warmongering state where only male warriors participated in politics. However, Brand also acknowledges elements of democracy in both city states. In the case of Sparta, the ecclesia , or the apella were the eligible voting public (Larkin, n.d.) Only Spartan free men of adulthood were able to vote, and adulthood was granted on the Spartan s 30th birthday. Additionally, women, immigrants and unequals such as Helots were ineligible to vote (Brand, 2010.) In this instance we see the basic semblance of a voting public, but, as Brand (2010) states, whilst the apella met once a month to discuss issues, their scope of influence was severely limited. The Spartan political model was a hierarchy of two kings (historically from two ancient ruling families) whose balance was kept in check by three (later) five Ephors who were elected annually, and who kept the kings power at a moderate level (Brand, 2010.) Beneath the Ephors were the Gerousia . According to Larkin (n.d.), It consisted of 28 Gerontes (Senators... elders over the age of 60) plus two kings. This means that there will be no voting on who should be a leader, but the power goes from one to the other by inheritance. There will be a king fulfilling his role as a supreme leader by surrounding himself with people who will help him govern. This is hard to imagine, but Enlightenment thinkers expressed their opinions on different questions related to this. The Enlightenment was an era from 1600 to 1800. It was a break from strictness of the Catholic Church and a period of intelligence and business growth in Europe. It grew out of the Renaissance, especially humanists. During this era, there were philosophers who were known as Enlightenment thinkers. They thought about two questions. First, are people naturally good or evil? Second, what type of government is best? Thomas Hobbes, an Englishman born in 1588, is one of the Enlightenment thinkers. Hobbes wrote The Leviathan, published in 1651, observing the violence and behavior of people near the end of the English Civil War. He believed that monarchy is the best government. John Locke, another Enlightenment thinker, is an Englishman born in 1632. Eager young men lined the streets, waiting for their turn to show their devotion to their country, by signing up for World War 1. As the war progressed, views on Patriotism changed. Different views on patriotism were expressed throughout the war using poetry and media. There was a trending pattern of soldiers who were eager to sign up, egged on by the guilt tripping propaganda spoon fed to them by government controlled media. The war trudged on and soldiers faced the true struggles of war. Realisation hit them, and they started to question whether the lives of their friends and themselves may not be worth defending their country. The popular view of war at the time is reflected in Jesse Pope s poem Who s for the Game? The strong patriotic views favoured during World War 1 are portrayed in this poem. In these tales, Hughes uses symbolism to express his feelings and views on African American history through the character Jesse B. Semple. In literary terms, the word symbolism is defined as being a person, object or event that suggests more than its literal meaning. And work was done while standing. Hughes shows that the true tale of an African American was at the physical foundation of a person: the feet. The symbolic nature of Simples feet goes beyond the mindset of African Americans at that time. Hughes uses Simple s feet to symbolize the poverty experienced by blacks. These feet have walked ten thousand miles working for white folks and another ten thousand keeping up with the colored. These feet have stood at altars, crap tables, free lunches, bars, graves, kitchen doors, betting windows, hospital clinics, WPA desks, social security railings, and in all kinds of lines from soup lines to the draft. Not only do Simple s feet showcase the thousands of miles working for white folks, but they also tell the tales of where he has been when not working. All of the aforementioned places are either associated with poverty or things viewed as aid by society. Hughes uses this to symbolize the negative connotation attached to African Americans because of the poverty most encountered at the time. It would not be necessary to use the device in the sunlight. All inventions failed, until Frank Shuman, an engineer from Pennsylvania finally made a breakthrough. Heavy duty lean burn gas engines admit as much as 75% more air than theoretically needed for complete combustion into the combustion chambers. The extremely weak air fuel mixtures lead to lower combustion temperatures and therefore lower NOx formation. While lean burn gas engines offer higher theoretical thermal efficiencies, transient response and performance may be compromised in certain situations. Lean burn gas engines are almost always turbocharged, resulting high power and torque figures not achieveable with stoichiometric engines due to high combustion temperatures. Heavy duty gas engines may employ precombustion chambers in the cylinder head. A lean gas and air mixture is first highly compressed in the main chamber by the piston. Petereck American Public University System Abstract Deficit spending applies to businesses, governments, and individuals alike. In relation to governments, deficit spending refers to spending more money than taking in over a given period (Investopedia, n.d.). Some Keynesian economists argue that deficits are a necessary evil needed to stimulate an economy. In theory, the deficit spending fills a gap in consumer spending during a recession by increasing government purchases to balance out the aggregate demand and stabilize the unemployment rate (Investopedia, n.d.). However, the downsides to deficit spending include possibly lowering GDP and increasing debt. Lastly, crowding out is known as the process where high government spending takes opportunities away from private sectors, hence the name crowding out (Investopedia, n.d.). This paper will explain some of the advantages and disadvantages to deficit spending while reviewing some of the effects of crowding out in an economy. Since 1979, this adds up to 43 million jobs in this country that have been removed and eliminated due to downsizing (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). One point one million of these jobs have been lost since 1987 in the defense industry due to budget cuts in the government (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). In 1998, it was expected that another 700,000 layoffs would take place in his government sector (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). In order to put this in perspective it is safe to say about that 50 percent more people have been victims of various layoffs and downsizing than have been victims of violent crimes (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). Downsizing in today s society is seen as a basic way of life for many United States companies (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). There is usually a first round of downsizing in many companies and this is often followed a short time later by a second round of downsizing (Brockner, Konovsky, Cooper Schneider, Folger, Martin, amp; Bies, 1994). U.S. Entry into WWII The United States, at the time of World War II, was facing an economic depression which concerned the American public and President Roosevelt because they knew that America s involvement with the war was inevitable. Most resources state that the United States entered World War II largely unprepared (America and Word War II 610). However, due to the fact that while preparing for the war there was an increase in economic growth, African Americans and women became more involved in industry and the military, and President Roosevelt incorporated several acts and embargos that encouraged Americans to produce more supplies as well as permitted Britain and France to purchase goods from the United States, it can be argued that America was in fact ... Most of the men who were preparing for war did not have any prior military experience nor were they trained well, and the forces reflected the prejudices of society which conflicted with unit cohesion (Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum). One social issue that was a problem in the goal to become a united force for battle was the fact that the army was still segregated. In 1941, the Double V campaign was introduced, which stated that by integrating African Americans into the army it would accomplish two victories: a defeat over Hitler s racism overseas, and a victory over racism in the homeland (America and World War II 616). What branched out of this campaign was an African American unit in the army air force referred to as the 99th pursuit squadron, also known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The training of this fighter squadron was a crucial element in the United States preparedness for war. The Tuskegee Airmen became so successful throughout the war as bomber escorts that they help reduce the amount of fallen Bombers by eighty six percent, which played an important role in the overall success of the Allies over Germany (Haulman 21). Additionally, women, too, became more involved in helping America prepare for war. Parents are unaware or do not understand the damage it can have on their children. However, in some instances, it is better to get out of an abusive relationship because that can be as toxic as divorce. On average, 50% of children who are born with married parents, will experience divorce before the age of 18 (Children and Divorce Baucom, 2010 2017). Along with divorce statistics, 40% of children in America are raised without a father being present (Children and Divorce Baucom, 2010 2017). My main focus will be on the school and community professional branch of West Chester University s Conceptual Framework. My idea of school and community professionalism has changed drastically since starting observations at Kennett High School. Initially, my thoughts on professionalism considered one side of the educational equation: teachers. Before students went to present, she briefed them on the expectations (clear speech, eye contact, hit all points of assignment etc.). Then she asked them about volunteering to present (Why should you volunteer to go first?). Volunteering first sets a presentation standard and makes an impression on the instructor. This helps students in an area that is not necessarily academic, but professional. Of course there were other helpful instances, like when one student was not comfortable in front of the class. He seemingly lost his voice. However, Dr. McJ told him to breathe, and take a second. Then she asked him to say at least one thing for his assigned slides. Nothing more, but nothing less. This encouragement helped the student to proceed and it showed the teacher s belief that all of her students could achieve. Just this little push showed me she does not accept students saying I can t because she believes that they can. • 37. Reflection Of The Indian Residential Community What does it mean when, in a room full of young and aspirational leaders, not one individual identifies as Indigenous? It s a sign of privilege. Privilege is who gets to be around the table, who is invited to the conversation (Stonehouse, 2017). It s a division of opportunity based on a history of socialized understandings of difference. But given this overwhelming landscape, Canada hopes to rewrite this history, to guide and inspire Aboriginal peoples and Canadians in a process of reconciliation and renewed relationships that are based on mutual understanding and respect (CC). This hope is encapsulated in what is known as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The TRC represents a compilation of accounts that have come from the enduring legacy of Indian Residential Schools (TRC, 2015). It is important because it calls to action the ways in which non Aboriginal people think, perceive history, and understand difference (CC). With its inclusion of 94 calls to action, I am left wondering if these calls will be answered and by who. As both LaBoucane and Stonehouse expressed, it s not just an Indigenous issue but a shared history (2017). This history that is not well understood by many including myself.
