ZTCs include two-year associate degrees and career technical education (CTE) certificates that have been redesigned by faculty to use open educational resources or zero-cost materials.

CCCOER OER Degree Research with Achieving the Dream, SRI Education, and rpk G...Una Daly
An OER-based degree, sometimes referred to as a Zero-Textbook-Cost degree, is a pathway to a degree or credential with no textbook costs. Faculty have redesigned the courses in the pathway to use open educational resources (OER) instead of traditional commercial textbooks and early research shows students are succeeding as well or better than peers in traditional courses while saving up to 25% on the cost of attendance. Additional research has shown that a college may be able to increase tuition revenue through increased student persistence and success in these pathways.
With the largest OER degree grant initiative of its kind launched last year at 38 colleges in 13 U.S. states, Achieving the Dream, has undertaken research to look at the academic and financial impact to students and their institutions. Grant partners SRI, along with partner rpk GROUP, is conducting research and evaluation to identify impact and cost as well as the facilitators and barriers to successful implementation of this model. Join us to hear from the researchers about methodology, benefits and challenges for colleges, and findings from the first semester of the grant.

OECx: Building Openly Licensed MOOCs to Enhance Re-use, Interactivity, and Le...Una Daly
The Open Education Consortium (OEC) launched a pilot in 2014 to demonstrate the power of re-using openly licensed course content to develop Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and revitalize and update existing OER/OCW in the process. Converting existing OCW into MOOCs offers OEC member institutions opportunities to gather information about how learners interact with the content and offers learners greater opportunities for interactivity with instructors, peers, and the content. Partnering with edX, OEC has offered member institutions the opportunity to develop MOOCs on a leading technology platform that provides different options for how learners engage in a course. Learners may choose to audit a course or sign-up for a verified certificate for a modest fee that can be used for academic or career enrichment.
Using their existing open courseware and open educational resources (OER), members have launched MOOCs that offer high-quality learning experiences with the option of a verified (fee-based) certificate available to learners throughout the world. Participating members in the pilot include the National Chiao Tung University, Tufts University, University Polytechnic of Madrid, Open University’s TESS India project, Anne Arundel Community College, and the University of Hokkaido. The courses range from the technology of energy, biology of water and health, introduction to helicopters, corporate social responsibility, teacher education, introduction to business, and the effects of radiation.

Increasing OER Adoptions with the Community College Consortium for OERUna Daly
During the past few years, adoptions of open textbooks at community colleges have increased. A key component in many community college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their successful strategies and tactics for creating a community of practice nationally as well as locally.
Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 200 member colleges in 17 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at their monthly online advisory meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through the CCCOER listserve makes it easier for new members to find and adopt the highest quality OER available in their disciplines.
Monthly webinars featuring OER leaders at community colleges, universities, and educational organizations around the world keep the community informed of new research findings, OER projects, and open policies. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues throughout higher education.

Achieving the Dream's OER Degree College Panel Una Daly
Last June, Achieving the Dream (ATD) announced the largest initiative of its kind to develop degree programs using high quality open educational resources (OER) at 38 community colleges in 13 states. The program is designed to help remove financial roadblocks that can derail students’ progress and to spur other changes in teaching and learning and course design that will increase the likelihood of degree and certificate completion.
Grantee colleges have been busy this summer and fall developing OER courses and planning the delivery of their OER Degree programs with cross-functional teams of stakeholders including faculty, librarians, administrators, and other staff.
Grant partners Lumen Learning, the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER), and SRI International are providing technical assistance, community of practice, and research support to grantees

CCCOER Webinar: Marketing OER Degrees to StudentsUna Daly
OER programs provide an opportunity for students to earn a certificate or associates degree without incurring the cost of textbooks for their courses. This can dramatically reduce the cost of attendance and has been estimated at 25% or more savings*. Most OER programs are developed to serve the neediest students who may otherwise have to defer college or take fewer courses due to prohibitive cost. Reaching the students who could most benefit most from enrolling in OER courses can prove to be a challenge in of itself. Improving Student Success with California Zero-Textbook-Cost Degree Grant Program
In early 2017, the California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) awarded 23 college districts funding to plan or create zero-textbook-cost (ZTC) degrees in the continuing effort to improve student access, success, and completion. ZTC degrees consist of an entire pathway of courses culminating in a degree or certificate that have been redesigned by faculty to use open educational resources or zero-cost materials.

Increasing OER Adoptions with the Community College Consortium for OERUna Daly
During the past few years, adoptions of open textbooks at community colleges have increased. A key component in many community college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their successful strategies and tactics for creating a community of practice nationally as well as locally.
Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 200 member colleges in 17 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at their monthly online advisory meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through the CCCOER listserve makes it easier for new members to find and adopt the highest quality OER available in their disciplines.
Monthly webinars featuring OER leaders at community colleges, universities, and educational organizations around the world keep the community informed of new research findings, OER projects, and open policies. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues throughout higher education.
CCCOER webinar: OER Degrees Emerge in Maryland and TexasUna Daly
Achieving the Dream launched an OER Degree Initiative in 2016 with 38 colleges in 13 states who are developing entire degree pathways where traditional textbooks have been replaced with open educational resources. Austin Community College and Montgomery Community College are two of the colleges who are participating in this transformation to enhance teaching and learning and share research on the impact on student success and cost.
Our speakers will share successes and challenges including topics such as the role of the library, faculty development, marketing oer courses to students, and working with your bookstore.

Achieving the Dream's OER Degree College Panel Una Daly
Last June, Achieving the Dream (ATD) announced the largest initiative of its kind to develop degree programs using high quality open educational resources (OER) at 38 community colleges in 13 states. The program is designed to help remove financial roadblocks that can derail students’ progress and to spur other changes in teaching and learning and course design that will increase the likelihood of degree and certificate completion.
Grantee colleges have been busy this summer and fall developing OER courses and planning the delivery of their OER Degree programs with cross-functional teams of stakeholders including faculty, librarians, administrators, and other staff.
Grant partners Lumen Learning, the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER), and SRI International are providing technical assistance, community of practice, and research support to grantees

CCCOER Webinar: Marketing OER Degrees to StudentsUna Daly
OER programs provide an opportunity for students to earn a certificate or associates degree without incurring the cost of textbooks for their courses. This can dramatically reduce the cost of attendance and has been estimated at 25% or more savings*. Most OER programs are developed to serve the neediest students who may otherwise have to defer college or take fewer courses due to prohibitive cost. Reaching the students who could most benefit most from enrolling in OER courses can prove to be a challenge in of itself. We will hear from speakers who have developed successful strategies at their colleges to create awareness and encourage underrepresented students to enroll in OER degree programs targeted at their academic success.

Improving Student Success with California Zero-Textbook-Cost Degree Grant Program
In early 2017, the California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) awarded 23 college districts funding to plan or create zero-textbook-cost (ZTC) degrees in the continuing effort to improve student access, success, and completion. ZTC degrees consist of an entire pathway of courses culminating in a degree or certificate that have been redesigned by faculty to use open educational resources or zero-cost materials.
Join us to hear from the Chancellor’s office on the vision behind the program and how to apply for the 2nd round of funding to develop additional ZTC degrees. We will also hear from the lead colleges providing statewide technical assistance to ZTC grantees and the work of the statewide Academic Senate OER Task Force to maximize the impact throughout all 113 California community colleges.

The MOOC frenzy of a couple years ago has slowed down but the idea of sharing knowledge globally paired with the ability to earn inexpensive completion certificates still resonates. The Open Education community has clarified the definition of “open” in Massive Open Online Course to mean courses featuring open educational resources (OER) that can be re-used freely by learners and educators alike. In this webinar, you will get to hear about OER-based MOOC courses developed by Open Education Consortium members: Tufts University and Scottsdale Community College.
Tufts University offered the first in a 2-part MOOC series: The Biology of Water and Health last fall on the edX platform. The course examines critical water-related issues through a global and interdisciplinary lens focusing on the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene to maternal and child nutrition and growth, and encourages participants to explore social, economic, and behavioral dimensions. Hear how Part 1 of the course was developed, opportunities for learner interactions, and the learner outcomes from the first offering of the course. Plans for Part 2 will also be shared and how it will differ based on the experiences of Part 1.
A Scottsdale Community College English instructor developed an open MOOC on the Canvas platform to help other faculty find and develop OER materials for Composition and Rhetoric to use in their teaching. Hear how the course helps faculty to understand open licenses and develop their own high-quality OER materials to lower costs for their students and expand access.

In order to address this issue, OUT, in collaboration with Saide’s OER Africa initiative, has conceptualised a course on ‘Digital Fluency’ to be provided as an Open Educational Resource (OER) and made available for ODeL provision.
The move from literacy to fluency encompasses effective and ethical online communication, critical interpretation, quality resource creation and curation, knowledge co-construction, and an understanding of using all of these abilities to open up education – with all of these becoming increasingly standard and effortless over time.

California community colleges may apply for up to $50,000 to promote use of open educational resources (OER) to replace expensive textbooks and lower costs for students. The Textbook Affordability Act of 2015 (AB 798) makes funds available for faculty and staff professional development and technology support to create awareness and promote adoption of OER.
The California Open Online Library (COOL4ed) was established to select open textbooks for the 50 highest enrolled college courses. It also contains faculty peer reviews and syllabi and sample activities used by faculty adopters.
Come to this session to learn how colleges can apply by June 30, 2016. COOL4ed and other open, online repositories will be demonstrated to find high-quality openly licensed materials for ICT courses.

A keynote presentation for the Online Teaching Pathways for Early-Career Criminologists & Sociologists

Abstract: We have all had to pivot rapidly from teaching face-to face to teaching fully online and have learned many lessons along the way, in a particularly short space of time. In many cases, if our IT groups and vendors had not equally risen to the occasion this would not have been possible. However, what has been observed is that those who have fared better over these recent months have been those institutions with well-established frameworks in place to mediate their technology-enhanced learning (TEL). That is, they have recognised processes that define how they translate what is in policy, procedures and planning into practice with appropriate IT scaffolding. Such a framework can be found within a number of TEL quality tools, that are designed to provide an institution with clear guidelines as to what things need to be in place to facilitate a robust and consistent approach to teaching with technology. Once these things are in place it makes it possible to undertake online teaching that does more than just mimic face-to-face practice, but actually provide a the foundation for innovative pedagogies to thrive. One concept associated with this is the notion that students can be productive and typically, this means the TEL has, or can become far more, active, authentic and collaborative.

For those institutions who have been specialising in distance education for some time, although they may have had to make some changes, the last few months have not been overly problematic. But for the remaining majority of institutions, there has been a monumental upheaval in how they are now required to conduct business, both for staff and students. Those who have fared better seem to be those who have reasonably mature frameworks in place to mediate their technology-enabled learning (TEL) offerings. That is, they have well established processes that define how they translate what they have in policy, procedures and planning into practice. Such a framework can be found within the COL TEL Benchmarks, that can provide an institution with clear guidelines as to what things need to be in place to ensure a robust and consistent approach to teaching with technology. This presentation will first highlight many of the lessons currently being learned across the higher education sector, it will also ask you to share what you have learned and then we will look at how some of these issues are contained within the COL TEL Benchmarks. Lastly it will make a case for investigating more fully how to use this tool to help your institution ready itself for success in the future.

Many college faculty and staff have been engaged in making their institutions more accessible, inclusive, and equitable through the adoption of OER and open educational practices. One year ago, the need for this work became even more apparent as educators began to recognize that the structural racism deeply embedded in our society was in fact very evident in higher education as well. California ZTC Degrees Panel: Past, Present, and FutureUna Daly
Online Teaching Conference 2020: Twenty-six California Community Colleges embarked on a journey to create thirty-four Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) Degrees to dramatically reduce the financial burden of earning an associate degree or career technical education certificate. More than 20,000 students over three years would benefit from this approach to eliminating the barrier of textbook costs. Data collected from participating colleges show that all students in ZTC pathways did better than those in non-ZTC courses, and that traditionally underserved populations did even better.
With proven results of reducing equity gaps, the Governor has proposed doubling the initial $5 million ZTC program to $10 million in FY21, opening this opportunity to more colleges wishing to leverage ZTCs to increase student achievement and reduce equity gaps. Join us to hear from ZTC champions who led the initiative, supporting the faculty who transformed their courses to lower barriers and improve students learning, and ensuring the sustainability of the program. Consider how to integrate a ZTC approach with your distance education, equity, pathways and other student success-centered initiatives. Launched in fall 2019, the Regional Leadership for Open Education (RLOE) initiative was inspired by CCCOER members’ growing need to collaborate across institutional and state boundaries to find solutions for issues impacting OER adoption at diverse, multi-institution systems. At the upper left of your screen, you should see the Participants window, which lists the participants in this session. You can use the icons underneath this window to:
Raise your hand if you have a question or comment and you wish to speak
There are also happy and sad faces and an applaud icon
Below the Participants window is the Chat window to the center-left of this screen where you can type a question or comment into the box at any time. You can also send a private message to another participant at any time, but please be aware that moderators can see all private messages.
Below the chat area is the Audio window in the bottom left of the screen. Click on the raised your hand button to let us know you would like to speak. You can use a head set or your phone for audio chat.
If you are using a microphone and have been recognized to speak,
Click the button with the microphone on it and begin speaking. Remember to click the button again when you finish speaking so that someone else can have a turn.
You can control your mic and volume levels with the sliders.
And if you are having trouble with your headset or microphone, you can access the Audio Setup Wizard from the Tools menu on the top toolbar. From Tools, select Audio, and then Audio Setup Wizard, and follow the on-screen instructions.
