The Catholic Counter Reformation saw the Church reform itself in response to the Protestant Reformation in the 15th and 16th centuries. Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit Order) in 1540 to strengthen Catholic education and missionary work. The Council of Trent from 1545 to 1563 upheld Catholic doctrine like the 7 sacraments while also reforming abusive practices in the Church like simony and nepotism.
