John Calvin, a French theologian and lawyer, was influential in spreading the Reformation outside of Germany and Scandinavia. He developed the first functioning educational system in Geneva by investing in schools and believing education in languages and humanities was necessary to properly understand the Bible. Calvinism had a significant impact on later systems of education by promoting literacy, universities, and the idea that education should be available to all social classes.
