Cathedral Raymond Carver Essay
Crafting an essay on "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver is a formidable task, laden with challenges
and complexities. First and foremost, delving into Carver's nuanced narrative requires a deep
understanding of his minimalist style and subtle storytelling techniques. Unraveling the layers of
meaning embedded within the text demands keen literary analysis and interpretation skills.
Moreover, addressing the thematic elements of the story, such as isolation, communication
barriers, and the possibility of epiphany, necessitates thoughtful reflection and critical
engagement. One must navigate through the intricacies of Carver's characters, particularly the
protagonist's evolving perception of the blind man, and discern the underlying messages
conveyed through their interactions.
Furthermore, crafting a coherent and compelling argument about the significance of "Cathedral"
within the broader context of Carver's body of work or within the realm of contemporary
literature requires meticulous research and thoughtful synthesis of scholarly perspectives.
In essence, composing an essay on "Cathedral" demands not only literary acumen but also
analytical prowess and scholarly rigor. It is an endeavor that requires dedication, insight, and a
profound appreciation for the complexities of Carver's narrative craft.

Adjuvants In Vaccines
The viruses that cause tumorigenic transformation produce oncoviral antigens. These
antigens are recognized by the immune system as non self because they are present
on infected cells (Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017).
Neoantigens, which are MHC restricted antigens, are produced by mutations in tumor
cells so they are not found on all tumors. Because neoantigens are unique to the
individual, vaccines that target these antigens need to be personalized (Saxena and
Bhardwaj 2017).
Finally, antigens that are over expressed significantly in tumor cells compared to
normal cells are simply known as overexpressed antigens (Saxena and Bhardwaj
2017).

Some New Adjuvants
Nanoparticles are a recently developed type of adjuvant that help vaccines access
the lymph nodes. These nanoparticles can allow the vaccine to be directly deposited
into the lymph node, activating DCs and CTLs via intranodal injections.
Nanoparticle vaccines may also reach the lymph node by lymphatic drainage. In the
lymph node, CD8 CTLs are produced by cross presentation of lymph node DCs
(Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017). Nanoparticle vaccines could be vital for the future of
cancer treatment.
Another new type of adjuvants are self polymerizing scaffolds. They incorporate TLR
agonists and peptide antigens. This allows the molecule to remain water soluble at
room temperature unlike TLR agonists. The scaffolds undergo temperature dependent
self polymerization which makes immunogenic particles water soluble. These
particles are drained to the lymph node where they activate DCs (Saxena and
Bhardwaj 2017).
Albumin binding agonists are effective because of the abundance of albumin in the
blood and lymph. Vaccines with albumin binding agonists have TAAs with lipid tails
that have a high affinity for albumin. Once bound, the vaccine is taken to lymph
nodes. This vaccine type is known to safely advance CD8 CTL activation (Saxena
and Bhardwaj 2017).
Oncolytic viruses can also be used as vaccine adjuvants in oncolytic virus therapy,
also known as virotherapy. This can
Prison Life In Prison Essay
Opening his eyes, all Jerry sees surrounding him is damp darkness. There are no
shadows or people he can see. No windows but an eerie breeze blows past him,
sending chills running up his arms. He goes to grab his 3ftX3ft blanket that covers
only a portion of his body. The only sense of time he can tell 10am. That is when
one of the security guard brings a tray of slop for breakfast. That s only if you
consider oatmeal drowned in 6 month old gravy food. With only feeling the sun on
his skin for two hours every week, his body craves warmth. Jerry has been in this
jail cell for seventeen years for murdering sixteen different people. Jerry pleaded
guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. While some people side with the opinion of
sentencing prisoners to jail for life, others side with the punishment of the death
penalty.
Sentencing prisoners to life in jail is a major sentence that destroys lives. The life
of the prisoner and that family. Knowing deep inside that the prisoners mother or
father or siblings will never be able to see them outside of that jail is truly heart
breaking. However, they will always know where they are. Compared to the death
penalty, many people believe that sentenced to life will show how serious the crime
was and that it will not be tolerated. Being in that jail cell for 20+ years is torture
and shows that that punishment is all you need to understand and repay your crime.
The death penalty costs more, delivers less, and puts innocent lives at risk.
Essay On Italian Wine
Overview:
To start with, best thing about Italian wines is no matter which wine you choose, you
find each wine unique and perfect to pair with the food. You don t actually bother
about the direction or orientation of the vineyard, the soil components and the wine
making techniques. Just open the bottle, pour the wine and get drinking!
In this assignment I am explaining my personal experience of tasting an extremely
prestigious Italian wine 2004 Ruffino Chianti DOCG.

Analysis Of Doctrine By Yoan Capote
Today, Wednesday, July 5, 2017 I took my first trip ever to the North Carolina
Museum in Raleigh North Carolina. I found myself in shock at how much I
enjoyed myself looking and analysing all the different types of art pieces that were
present in the gallery. While walking around there were so many different types of
artwork that I found it hard to decide on which piece to shared about this week.
While walking and observing all the beauty that was being seen it amazed me about
all the different way an artist could express themselves. While looking and taking in
every little detail of each artwork, there was one particular piece of artwork that was
very interested. It was called Doctrine by Yoan Capote.
Yoan Capote was born in 1977 and is from Cuba. Yoan Capote creates artwork that
poetically captures personal experience and universal issues of power, alienation,
isolation and restrictions. Capote works symbolize themes of humanity, studying their
interface, representation of physical or sensory possibilities. His artwork Doctrine is
a sculpture of a cast bronze chair and steel handcuffs. In his artwork, Doctrine the
chair is made of wax pulled out of shape by the addition of real hand cuffs, were
then cast into bronze. His art is a 3 D in, which made this piece appear more
realistic than a painting. As I stood there looking at a Capote sculpture of the chairs it
was obvious that he really wanted everyone to see that he had a story that he was
trying to tell by
Essay on Taiwan Policy Memo

Subject: What should US policy towards military assistance to Taiwan be?
Historical Background: Taiwan, otherwise known as the Republic of China (ROC),
has a complicated political status on the world stage. The People s Republic of China
(PRC) lays territorial claims to Taiwan and most countries recognize China as the
mainland as Taiwan as an autonomous region within it. However, Taiwan sees itself
independent as the true government of China, but only a couple dozen countries
recognize it as sovereign government and by technical definition of what constitutes
as a sovereign state under the Montevideo Convention of 1933, Taiwan fits the
criteria.1 Though before 1971, both countries laid ... Show more content on

Both economic and security threats are culminated in a general consensus that
weapons trade between both countries includes only defensive weapons.5 In 1994,
the policy towards Taiwan was reviewed, however no changes were made to the
arms sales policy.6 The military assistance the US provides Taiwan with, despite
being defensive in nature, is still a source of consternation to the PRC and is a
problem for its relations with both Taiwan and the US.
Significance:
Military assistance to Taiwan is essential for Taiwan s sense of security, but it is
also a source of friction with US relations with the PRC. Selling Taiwan an amount
of weapons that the PRC considers excessive may lead to increased tensions
between both the US and the PRC. Under the TRA, the US still has a degree of
obligation in ensuring Taiwanese security. It deems that if US assistance is
necessary to maintain peace in the Western Pacific and if Taiwan is forced to make a
decision regarding its statehood under non peaceful means the US will intervene in
Taiwan s affairs. Currently, this is limited to selling defensive weapons, but not
providing further military assistance or performing joint drills like those performed in
South Korea.
Positive trilateral relations are essential for US economic interests. By maintaining

Essay on Sports and Politics
Politics has come to be considered not only inappropriate in the arena of sports, but
actually antithetical to it, Zirin says. We want so much to see sports solely as an
arena of play, not seriousness. But here s the thing, this can cheapen not only the
greatness and relevance of sports to us as a society, but also the courage of the
athletes . The pursuit of fame, wealth and status can blind the human conscience,
which is why it is important for us to encourage athletes to voice their opinions. As
a nation, we should not silence our athletes, because it is the truly courageous
athletes who have the audacity to stand up when it is socially unacceptable. Sports
should be used as a platform for a certain kind of politics such as... Show more

Unlike Muhammad Ali, he was pro war, because his son was fighting across seas.
As the first African American to play Major League baseball once said, a life is not
important, except in the impact it has on other lives . Robinson believed it was
important to fight for human rights and to make an impact on the nation and its
people. He backed the Republican Party and Richard Nixon, but demanded they
allow blacks in his administration . Robinson s career with the Brooklyn Dodgers
helped change those deep seeded racial stereotypes.
Another athlete who took a political stance was Billie Jean King, who fought for
equal gender rights in sport. On September 20, 1973 Billie Jean King took on men s
champion Bobby Riggs in a battle of the sexes tennis match. Riggs was known for
criticizing women s sports and female athletes . King stated, I just had to play, Title
IX (the ban on gender discrimination in federally funded educational program) had
just passed, and I wanted to change the hearts and minds of people to match the
legislation . King beat Riggs in three straight sets, inspiring female athletes across the
globe to break gender barriers.
Furthermore, King went on to boycott the difference in pay between male and female
athletes in tennis. She was the first female tennis player to win more than $100,000 in
a season, yet male players were still making three times this amount . The movement

How Does Shakespeare Create Sympathy For Macbeth
Sympathy for Macbeth in William Shakespeare s Macbeth
The sympathy that we have for Macbeth changes greatly as the play progresses. This
is due mainly to the role that the other characters, mainly Lady Macbeth, play in
influencing his thoughts and decisions. In some cases he seems powerless to stop a
chain of events, like the witches prophecies, and at other times just to weak to resist
the evil temptations. In this essay I will determine how and why our sympathy for
Macbeth changes during the course of the play.
Our first impressions of Macbeth are from the descriptions that we get of him from
other characters at the beginning of the play. For example the captain calls him Brave
Macbeth, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However before the close of the scene he comes to an agreement with himself that
he will not go out of his way in order to become King of Scotland, If chance will
have me king, why chance may crown me/Without my stir. During this scene we
learn about Macbeth s possible motives. Would he have ever thought that he could
become King, let alone murdering the King, or is it the witches who start off the
whole process of Duncan s murder? Initially it is Macbeth that comes up with the
idea. I think that the witches appeal to what Macbeth wants to believe, they do not
tell him what to think and never tell him how any of their prophecies will come
true. They are not the origin of the idea of the murder, they may be appealing to
that idea, but they never create it. The witches appear again in the play when
Macbeth seeks them out in Act IV and they give him three new prophecies. These
prophecies appeal to Macbeth s train of thought. He feels that he is safe if he acts
on his desires, as a wood cannot move and a man has to be born of a woman. Again
these prophecies do not offer any instructions about what Macbeth should to do. I
believe that however much the witches seem to be connected with Macbeth s change
of heart, they cannot be blamed for controlling him. They exist in the play as the
constant reminder of the potential of evil in the

The cultural and literary phenomenon set forth by J.K. Rowling enraptured an
audience spanning many generations, inviting her readers to immerse themselves in
the fantastical wizarding world bound by her seven novels. Rowling rewards her

often) enjoyed by their younger devotees, they craft an allegorical puzzle for an
informed audience. Rowling makes brilliant use of the classical tradition to provide
the consumers of both canons, classical and Potter centric, with a repertoire of
themes, motifs, and language reminiscent of those in antiquity, allowing for parallels
to be drawn across the millennia. These elements of the classical tradition are

Throughout his journey, Greek goddess of war and wisdom Athena can be seen as
a patroness to Odysseus on his quest (Spencer, 35). She manipulates her form many
times throughout The Odyssey, assuming various disguises to assist Odysseus on
his journey home. A notable example of this is when she adopts the form of a little
girl to lead Odysseus to the palace of the king of Phaiakians, shrouding him in mist
to protect him as a stranger in their land (Homer, Book ____9?). Athena s
willingness to help this mortal is attributed to the valor and wisdom she sees
evident in Odysseus. Meanwhile, Professor McGonagall serves as a clear
counterpart to Athena in Harry s world, not so coincidentally named Minerva, her
Roman equivalent. McGonagall, professor of transfiguration, is of commensurate
wisdom and represents a similar figure in Harry s life. Not only does she fill the
role of Harry s teacher and mentor as the Head of Gryffindor, Harry s House, (i.e.,
his patroness) but her wizarding guile often helps Harry when presented with
challenges; this can be viewed as a form of the divine intervention characteristic of
Homeric style epics. Furthering this allusion, we are brought to the fact that
Minerva is revealed to readers as one of the few registered animagi of her time. This
allows for two implications to be drawn: firstly, McGonagall s status as an animagi
means she has the power to

It happened because of the killing of a German officer, Ernst vom Rath by for a
Polish Jew called Herschel Gynszpan (Moeller 105). I witnessed the frightful attack
by the Nazis on places related to the Jews such as synagogues, their religious sites,
and cemeteries (Bergen Chapter 5 ). All their shops windows had been smashed
broken. The once graceful streets filled with shops have now been replaced by
burned debris and fractures of broken glasses. The Nazis did not only attack their
shops and dwellings, but they had also arrested and even murder huge number of

Relationship Between State and Federal Governments
Introduction
Federalism is a system of government in which powers are divided between a central
(national) government and regional (state) governments. (pg. 4)The relationship
between the state and federal governments is very complex. There are certain things
that state governments can do that the federal government cannot do, and there are
things that the federal government can do that the state governments cannot do. In
the midst of it all, the complex situations between the state governments and the
federal government can cause many conflicts throughout the country and it can make
it difficult for some citizens to keep up with the constantly changing politics. There
are many advantages to federalism. Federalism manages the social and political
conflicts throughout the country, it promotes

Distribution of articles and journals allow AARP to increase its influence on
American voters. There s a contract with AOL offering members a ten percent
discount which is advertised through AOL Software and is distributed to millions
throughout the United States. This practice allows AARP to contact more voters and
members than in previous years. All practice enable the AARP to influence decisions
of voters, which in turn affect the policy making process in their favor. Sponsoring

the AARP s influence is conveyed through approximately twenty second

good things, it must come to an end. the decline and death of vaudeville appears
certain, clear and inevitable. From the performers point of view, there was no
perspective other than the here and now of their lives. Each day seemed to differ
little from the previous, and speculation about the future was, as ever, informed by
hear say and past experience. As an array of specialty acts, vaudeville was an
enterprise without name that, over many years, could be found in the
marketplaces of Asia and Europe. It eventually spread around the world to the
farthest corners of Australia and Africa. Performers worked when and where they
could, quite often in undesired locations. A certain clichГ© attached to performing
in bed and breakfast s, saloons and public houses after their owners added stages
and audience pits set apart from the tavern. It soon became quite taxing for
performers to not only live the same shows everyday, but to move on and find
other work after they were no longer needed in vaudeville shows. Still, this was not
the only reason for the demise of vaudeville, although it played a large part. The
largest contributing factor was the invention of the motion picture in the 1930 s.
There was no longer a need for people to be entertained by a comical, musical, circus
style side show. Now they found a more intimate and fascinating way of enjoying a
performance. The first
Raism Needs To Stop Now Analysis
raism needs to stop now!
Martin Luther King Jr. was an amazing man, when he was giving the I Have a
Dream speech he acknowledged about how everyone should receive getting
treated exactly the same, along with having the same rights. He also protested
about how blacks live matter. He was a very powerful man to tell everyone what
he feels is right, how blacks are people too, and should have the same privileges as
all Americans do. I agree with him because everyone was created by God and no
one is more privileged than others, so racism should stop know by the help of all of
humanity working together. One situation that needs to happen to stop racism is
to compose that everyone else is treated equally( I have dream) . One element that
will occur if we are all treated the same is the African Americans can t gain
madness over what is said to them. When we are talking to them, we won t be
talking meanly but we will be talking nicely also they will be shocked about how
nice we are being towards them. Another concept is our actions won t build down
their self esteem, we won t laugh and produce disgusted faces at them. They won t be

The reasons you should be nice to everyone is it can cause their day 100 times
better, it can build their confidence up, also it can show whites do care about African
Americans. Those are just a few items that can happen if you were nice to African
American s. Also, if they are thinking about killing themselves or hurting
themselves crudely, they can stop and it also shows that you are kind hearted also
have marvelous manners. This will lead to a great society and a fair and equal
country. That would be a miracle if people would actually start being nicer to
everyone specially colored
1984 Figurehead Quotes
Can a country survive with nothing except hatred to others? Joseph Stalin
attempted to rule Russia under this system. He brought fear to the people by
killing people who rejected his rule and anyone who being accuse of dislike Stalin.
Under his rule, the people cannot trust others because people can take advantage
of accusing someone and make that person disappear by the next day. This system

Starting with resources, Oceania has to run out of resources eventually because
the three superstates Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia cannot conquer each other s
stated from The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism by Emmanuel

war going. For example, Winston has to hoarder the razor blade stated from this

Resources are limited, but not unlimited and if those resources ran out then the
purpose of war will died. For the superstates, war is power to control their people to
give them reason to have war. Ingsoc use this type of purpose to make people to
love Big Brother. If the war died because the resources, then there will be peace and
peace can make people to think again, which Ingsoc does not like when people think
outside of their principle. Therefore Ingsoc keep the war going and if the war died,

Mounting Student Debt
Can you imagine yourself as an adult who just graduated from college, and has to
move back home and live with your parents? Imagine waking up everyday and
knowing that you have two hundred thousand dollars in student loans that has to be
paid? There are many reasons that cause these problems, but today, large amounts of
student debtand an increase in unemployment are the major problems that college
graduates are facing. With the lack of jobs and no money, people are turning to
their parents for food and shelter. In Rosie Evan s essay Boomerang Kids: What are
the Cause of Generation Y s Growing Pains, she explains the causes of the delayed
adulthood, and she also gives the messages to people and the government to offer
better support to this generation. The causes of Generation Y growing pains are the
amount of college s debt, lack of employment and people becoming too dependent on
technology.
A great example of not being able to move ahead in society is when you are
struggling with debt. Mounting student debt is one of the important contributing
factors why a large number of college students move home. A couple of generations
ago, things were different. Adults who did not go to college either got jobs or get
married. A close friend of our family went to a college for 7 years, as soon as he
graduated, he owed a large debt for his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

However, their ways of accepting this disease are pretty different from each other.
With Bessie, she stayed positive and welcomed it as she is refusing to have the
medication helping her memories. She kept going out and having conversations
with people around her. Besides, Fanny was upset for her disease since she could
not be able to drive anymore, which in her words is being dependent on her family.
The fact is that she could no longer remember the street signs and the way to drive.
Joe s behavior is more positive than Fanny s. He could be able to use the computer

Reality Winner Thesis
A hero is typically seen as a well rounded individual who does good deeds for others.
Whether it is saving someone from a fire or rescuing a missing child, they can be
relied on and trusted to continue helping others. However, this was not the case with
Reality Winner, a former NSA employee that leaked information stating that there was
Russian interference during the 2016 American election. Normally, a herodisplays
that they are trustworthy, respectful, and brave, which are traits Winner does not
reflect. Due to this, Winner cannot be labeled as an American hero.
To begin with, Winner performed an act that ruined any trust that she had. To become

The most obvious proof of this is her disrespectful attitude towards Trump, a
republican. Winner is a democrat, and insulted republicans, the counterpart on the
political spectrum, several times. The New York Times, in their article Reality

states: She denounced Mr. Trump as the orange fascist we let into the white house
and mocked Attorney General Jeff Sessions as a Confederate . Not only did she
insult Trump, but she also insulted Jeff Sessions, who is also a republican.
Moreover, when she sent a message to console the Iranian foreign minister, she
tweeted: There are many Americans protesting US govt aggression towards Iran. If
our Tangerine in Chief declares war, we stand with you! It is evident that Winner
does not care at all for Trump. To constantly insult him is already a form of lack of
respect, however his does not need to be taken into sympathetic moments such as
consoling the Iranian foreign minister. The attitude she displays towards the
republican party proves that she has no respect for them. Although it is true that she
is entitled to her own opinion, her ill mannered way in doing so only makes her seem

Anselm Kiefer Was A German Artist Who Was Born
Directly...
Anselm Kiefer was a German artist who was born directly after World War II. The
art that Kiefer created focused on a reconciliation with the shame and horror
surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed to redefine what it meant to be German in a
post Nazi World (Smith). The piece I studied is located at the MoMa in San
Francisco and is entitled Shulamite . Shulamite is a historical paintingof a Nazi
Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed
the architecture of a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for
their victims. Kiefer uses some very interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the
intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage, grief, and shame that Germans
felt in response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with the country s
dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country as no
longer representative of it s dark past.
The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede
towards some flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the hall resemble
a sort of dungeon or a sort of oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades
of black, and brown. White paint is used to outline the crevices and edges of the
bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched black. The dimly lit
piece seems to be an interior space solely lit by the series of small flames, and these
flames are placed at a

This Estimating Osmolarity by Change in Weight of Potato Tuber Tissue experiment
was conducted to determine the molarity of sucrose concentration where the mass of
potato tuber segments does not change, indicating an isosmotic concentration.
Indicating an isosmotic concentration was done by calculating the change of mass of
the potato tuber cells prior to incubation against the mass after incubation in the
sucrose solution. My groups goal was to determine what type of osmotic concentration
was created as compared to the potato tissues. The results of my groups lab indicated
three different osmotic concentrations. At this sucrose concentration the sucrose
solution is isotonic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The percent change in mass of the potato cells is positive when incubated in
concentrations of 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2 M of sucrose. At these three solutions, a
hypertonic environment was observed within the cell. The percent change in mass of
the potato cells begins to decrease and become negative when incubated in
concentrations of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5M, and 0.6M of sucrose. At these four specific
solutions, a hypotonic environment was obtained within the cell. Reflecting on the
data, a line of best fit crosses the x axis where an isotonic relative osmotic
concentration is accomplished. An isotonic solution was achieved when the sucrose
solution is around 0.175 M. Based on the results from the experiment, our alternative
hypothesis was
Banking Regulation Basel II
Procyclicality in minimum regulatory capital charges for credit risk
There is a vast amount of literature available on the additional procyclicality of
regulatory capital charges in Pillar 1 of Basel II. In this section, we shall briefly
visit this literature and see if any conclusions can be drawn from this, before
proceeding to the conclusion and mitigation of these procyclical effects. The
majority of the literature, as expected, focuses primarily on the IRB approach, as this
aspect of Basel II has drawn the most criticism from financial practitioners and
academics alike. The greater part of this literature has found that there is an
overwhelmingly substantial rise in procyclicality of minimum regulatory capital
charges originating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the biggest problem, and has to be addressed correctly once economic
conditions are conducive to do so. Within the specified Tier 1 requirement, common
shares and retained earnings should be a priority and form the predominant form of
capital. To ensure the quality of this capital, the Basel Committee should harmonize
capital deductions and prudential filters (FSF BCBS, 2009). The committee should
also enhance the disclosure of the components of regulatory capital in order to
increase transparency within the system and avoid confusion in terms of the quality
of capital required.
(2) The Basel Committee should make adjustments to their framework to inhibit
excessive cyclicality of the minimum capital requirements
The Basel Committee has made a reasonable effort to mitigate this cyclicality already,
by monitoring the impact of cyclicality through data collection (via their Capital
Monitoring Group). This data is available every 6 months, and helps the committee
monitor the extent to which the capital regime reveals excessively high levels of
capital cyclicality. In correspondence with this data monitoring, the Basel Committee
must review the ways in which cyclicality, arising from the Pillar 1 capital
requirement calculation, can be abated. They must try and maintain the risk
sensitivity of the inputs, but also create an emphasis on dampening the effects of
cyclicality on the outputs. This way the

The Theme and Style of Beowulf
Interpretations of Beowulf s theme vary much more than commentary on the poet s
style. In this essay I hope to state clearly some of the popularly mentioned themes
running through the poem, and to carefully delineate many aspects of the author s
style.
Many critics feel that the speech of Hrothgar between lines 1700 and 1784
encapsulates the moral of the poem.... He does not know the worse till inside him
great arrogance grows and spreads (Shippey 38). Is the theme of the poem that pride
kills? Hrothgar s ominous words do come back to haunt the hero more than once.

There are also risks during and after surgery such as bleeding and infection. As with
any brain surgery, there is a small risk of brain tissue damage, which can result in a

John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Also, he is the Co Director of the Craniofacial
Center. Craniofacial surgery is a subspecialty of oral surgery, plastic surgery, and
Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) that deals with congenital and acquired deformities of
the skull, face and jaws (Gates, Brooks Higginbotham 2:179 80). The are all kinds
of craniofacial disorders and deformities for instance cleft lip, cleft palate,
craniofacial skull, ear deformities, facial paralysis, hemi facial, and microsomia.
Craniofacial deformities are caused by genetic inheritance, trauma, or disease. When
treating craniofacial deformities it requires the expertise of specialized physician
from many different areas. It is impossible for any single physician to successfully
evaluate and treat all the abnormalities associated with craniofacial patients (
Craniosynostsis ). Ben Carson specializes in craniosynostosis, which is when the
bone joints fuse together causing problems with normal brain and skull growth. The
skull is divided into segments, and early premature closure of the bone suture fibrous

Academic Tenure
Climbing the academic ladder to tenure is a long process that requires patience,
persistence and dedication. As tenures decline , it is important to think about ways
to secure a job in the academia. I believe that tenure in universities depends on
teaching as well as research and publishing. Great scientists such as Einstein had
considerable amount of published papers even before he got the academia job and
PhD. On the other hand, I believe that a high quality teaching professor, who also
focuses on research deserves a tenureposition. Landing in a tenure position is very
difficult, but remains a possibility. Having a sense of quantity and quality of

I truly belive that the hardest stage is establishing a recognizable and professional

and isolation avoidance, in addition to thinking out of the box can utilize analytical
capabilities to promote writing and publishing. Additionally adhering to the right
publishing strategies and guidelines can facilitae the road to tenure positions. On
another note, I also believ that finding the right fertile academic environment that
encourages competition and positive thinking can lead to a productive and relaxed

How To Food Insecurity

Many Americans struggle with food security every day. In fact, according to Diane
Beasley, a writer for the CNN Wire, One in six Americans struggles with food
security, and 40% of food goes to waste (Beasley). America needs to fix this problem
because one sixth of Americans don t get food. Chesterbrook Elementary in Mclean,

Even if food cannot always be donated, it can still be recycled instead of just thrown
in the dump. According to the USDA, Americans waste enough food every day to
fill a 90,000 seat football stadium (USDA). If students donated and recycled waste it
would decrease that number and it would reduce the amount of waste in landfills
because they would be donating and recycling the food to food banks. The food that
the schools donate would go to the needy. Also, according to David Seifman,
writer for the New York Post, New York spends way too much money on food
waste saying they spend more than three hundred million dollars to ship ten
thousand, 800 tons of trash every day to landfills (Seifman). If every school
donated and recycled food rather than throw it away, cities like New York wouldn
t have to spend as much money and they would also save the amount of trash going

Lastly, Too much food is wasted. According to CNN, 40% of food goes to waste

food that goes to waste because the schools wouldn t be throwing food away and it
would decrease the amount of food waste in landfills. Therefore, donating and

4-H Swine Group Analysis
Starting in seventh grade I began helping my 4 H swine group as a Junior Leader
then later as a Teen Leader in my high school years. As a junior and teen leader I
aided the adult leaders of the swine group run meetings, prepare the 4 Her s for
purchasing and caring for their projects, been a live example of proper
showmanship of their hogs, and ensure that to members have proper uniform for
showmanship at the county fair. This past year the group had four new first year
members join; I was given the honor of coaching a young girl in the group one on
one how to properly show her fair pig. Although I have always been involved in
helping the entire group, being responsible for a single member was a new
experience. I got to watch her develop under
The Age Of Turbulence By Alan Greenspan
After reading The Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan, the memoir truly shows
the significance of our economy in the United States. Alan Greenspan, who spent
eighteen years as the chairman of the Federal Reserve, showed great efforts to
assure that America didn t experience an economic disaster. Predicting the economic
downturn that became the 1958 recession was my first forecast of the economy as a
whole (47 Greenspan). His mindset was constantly full of ideas that would make the
economy more stimulated. Greenspan explains the history he has in government,
other economic systems, and world issues that greatly affect the economy. He also
made sure the rest of the world would grow in a way to make more opportunities for
all. His main... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Federal Reserve has many jobs to accomplish such as moderating long term
interest rates to increase investment. When the economy is performing strongly,
the Feds will raise interest rates in order to slow down the economy. This may
sound like a bad idea, but in reality it must be done to ensure that our economy
stays in equilibrium. We do not want our economy doing too well but we do not
want it doing too poorly either. When the Feds change the interest rates the banks
that borrow money from the Fed get directly affected because the loaning price of
the money either lowers or rises in response to the interest rates. On the other hand,
when the Fed lowers interest rates, it means the economy is performing poorly.
Lowering interest rates makes money more accessible for the banks to borrow.
When the Fed tightens, the stock market tends to not perform well. While the Fed
had no explicit mandate to focus on the stock market, the effects of the run up in
prices seemed to me a legitimate concern (175 Greenspan). To explain, higher
interest rates creates a lower demand for stocks, causing stock prices to fall. Lower
interest rates creates a higher demand for stocks, causing stock prices to rise. When
the demand for stocks fall, the demand for bonds will increase. Interest rates and
bond prices are inversely related. This means that when interest rates rise, the demand
for bonds fall. Alan Greenspan had a significant contribution to why our economy is
the way it is
The two peaces of poetry I have studied by Seamus Heaney...
The two peaces of poetry I have studied by Seamus Heaney include
Follower and The Early Purges.
Heaney s poems both relate back to his younger, adolescent life. In the poem Early
purges , he describes young kittens being drowned on the farm. His maturity is
shown when he says with perception, And now, when shrill pups are prodded to
drown, I just shrug, Bloody pups . But we are shown that he is still careless now,
as well in a casual way by saying I just shrug . He is also unsympathetic, and
justifies his actions like Dan. He is now older, looking back and changed. The
language used by Heaney also expresses the fact that little was thought of these so
called nuisances. He says they are slung and Dan

But the fear came back . In this particular occasion, the full stop emphasises a space
of time where Dan had no regret of what he had done with no disgust, but suddenly
the opposite is true over a moment in time. A couple of vicious verbs used in this
same stanza, are sickening tug , which shows that Dan was sickened by things that he
had done with his violent actions.
I think that the up until the final two verses, Heaney s outlook is that of a young boy,
who doesn t understand why something so cruel should happen. Heaney then shows
his maturity again by showing his understanding that the kittens, or pests , did
actually have to be removed. In the final stanza, a feeling of regret still takes place
where he is trying to convince himself that he did the right thing and that the kittens
are better off dead than alive.
Overall in this poem, it is made up of 3 simple line stanzas, where the first and third
lines rhyme.
In the poem Follower ,the voice is of the son. He is speaking about his father who
he looks up to and admires. The poem starts with the lines My father worked with a
horse plough, his shoulders globed like a full sail strung . The image given to us
immediately is of a large piece of machinery controlled by a large a powerful man.
We are told his shoulders are like a full sail strung , so straight away I think of a large
yacht sailing at great speed and nothing can stop it. I

The Pros And Cons Of Single-Sex Education
Single sex education is an old approach that continues to gain momentum in today s
society. The concept has existed in many private schools, but it is a new system of
education for public schools. Single sex education advocates often cite learning
differences as evidence for the benefits of separating male and femalestudents in the
classroom. However, other experts suggest that segregating by sex can increase
genderstereotyping. Essentially, effective teaching depends on the engagement and
excitement of students regarding certain material. While it may be easier for
students at single sex schools to participate in class and succeed academically, the
real world is not composed of one sex. Additionally, co educational schools offer
more diversity and a realistic social ecosystem. However, students may become
distracted by the opposite sex, hindering their academic successes. Single sex
education: the pros and cons by Kristin Stanberry and Research Spotlight on Single
Gender Education are two articles that pinpoint the advantages and disadvantages of
single sex education. Ultimately, single gender education is better than co
educational education because teachers can use techniques geared towards a specific
gender, the educational prospects for girls and boys widen, and distractions are
limited.
Firstly, single gender education is better than co educational education because
teachers are able to use techniques geared towards a specific gender. Recent research

Uspiritus Orphanage Short Story
In the city of Lexington, Kentucky, there lives a small young family. The husband s
name is Frank Dean. The wife was named Suzanne Dean. They only had one child
which was named Posey. Posey was a girl with brown hair and large grey eyes. The
little girl was four years old and was an only child. The parent were trying their best
to cheer up the girlby showering her with gifts but the girl remained depressed.
Suzann and Frank were deeply wounded by the fact that they can not cheer up the
little girl. So as the weeks pasted, they went to different orphanages, to see if they
would make a connection with one of the children, but with no luck. As their
search continued they found one Orphanage called Uspiritus Orphanage . Against
their better judgement, they went over to the orphanage. As they entered the
Orphanage, they were greeted by one of the counselors at the Orphanage. The
counselor s name was Julian Hills, she was tall lady with hair as dark as the night
and with dark black eyes. She was scary to look directly at but as she went in to
greet Suzann and Frank, they were taken back by how nice and kind she was. As
they entered the Orphanage, they were greeted by the sight of giggling children and
children playing with with blocks.
Good luck , said Hills as she walked away to help out the children that playing with
the blocks. Where do you want to start? , said Suzann as she turned and questioned
Frank. I don t know, maybe we should start by hanging out with the

The Pros And Cons Of Wolves
In May, 2016, 20 calves were killed and not eaten in four days in the area of the
Absaroka Mountains, outside of Pinedale Wyoming. (Urbigkit ,2016) However, it
doesn t stop there, every day livestock and wildlife are killed and rarely eaten by
wolves in almost every western state. This is a problem that needs to be addressed
before ranchers lose their herds, and before the wild herds are depleted beyond
restoration. If the wolf situation was bad a couple years ago, well now it s worse,
even some of the protectors of wildlifeare starting to come to their senses. Livestock
is the most expensive prey that wolves can get to, and the problem is that they get
to them very easy and can escape because they have no reason to come back to the kill

Wolves need to be managed and if they are not addressed they will continue to roam
free of charge and deplete the livestock herds. Even beyond that our generation of
families won t feel safe letting our grandchildren run around. The wolves have mass
killed 19 elk in one night, slaughtered countless numbers of livestock and in places
threatened people. In the rural town of Reserve, New Mexico kids wait for the bus
in wooden and metal cages, meant to protect the kids from wolf attacks. (Toft,
2016). You may think is this is unnecessary, until you see and hear about the wolves
growling and snarling at the frightened children. If this doesn t change your
opinions on wolves maybe you should sit in the cage and live in the wild with them.
It s a sad time when the most important thing you walk out of the house with is not
your coat or anything it s your weapon, so you can defend your family, home, and
livelihood. As communities and stewards of the land our duty is to protect as well as
manage, we as hunters are managing, however the wolves are not being managed
correctly, and are getting away with the minor scolding of words that they cannot
comprehend from the government. I m not saying eradicate them but certainly allow
the ranchers and such to shoot wolves, and for the government to take charge and
trap, shoot, and dart these arithmetically growing wolf
Nixon’s Use of Executive Privilege to Prevent...
In the summer of 1972, 5 burglars broke into the Watergate hotel where the
democratic convention was being held. The burglars were eventually captured and
arrested, but one of the burglars implicated then President of the United States of
America, Richard Nixon, in the planning of the break in. After weeks of subpoenas
from congress, demanding tapes that were used to record the activities in the White
House. It was then that Richard Nixonwould irrevocably change America s future by
doing something that every president had done before him, he would use executive
privilege to block the investigation into the White House s role into the Watergate
break in. By invoking executive privilege, Richard Nixon proved his guilt and
permanently changed how Americans viewed the president s use of executive
privilege.
Of course, this was not the first time executive privilege had been invoked. In 1776,
George Washington used an offshoot version of executive privilege to withhold
documents relating to a failed military expedition. Although Washington did hand
over the documents to Congress, it would be forever noted that this would be the
first example of executive privilege. Despite not actually using it, it is still seen as
the first use of executive privilege in American history.
In the beginning, it is assumed from George Washington s letter to Congress
regarding executive privilege that he intended executive privilege to be used for
America s well being and not for personal gain.

It should be noted that some materials exhibit more than one of the above
properties and It is better to use them in combination with conventional material.
Sensing Materials 1. Optical Fibers: Fiber optic sensors with crack monitoring
capability have been developed by Wolff and Messelier (1992), Ansari et al
(1993); Voss and Wanser (1994).It is also used to detect moisture content. A sensor
for moisture detection have been developed by Michie et al (1994). 2.
Piezoelectric materials: Piezoelectric materials have two unique properties which
are interrelated. When a piezoelectric material is deformed, it gives off a small but
measurable electrical material it experiences a significant increase in size (up to a
4% change in volume). They are often used to measure fluid compositions, fluid
density, fluid viscosity, or the force of an impact. In stress and pressure sensing, the
PVDF materials have been found to give a better electrical response. Actuating

electrical field into a mechanical strain. 2. Shape memory alloys: Shape memory

Standing with Standing Rock
Citizens of the U.S. must petition and call public officials to urge the Obama
administration to declare Standing Rock Indian Reservation a National Monument,
thereby halting the development of the Dakota Access Pipeline, to accomplish the
following priorities: prevent the contamination of a vital U.S. water source and its
surrounding ecosystems, stop the human rights violations and abuse at Standing
Rock, and avert the desecration of sacred native burial grounds. Stopping the pipeline
would additionally benefit the planet and all its inhabitants by assisting the transition

Another possible solution to the harmful consequences I ve outlined is organizing a
group of military veterans to camp at the reservation, and stand with the protesters in
defiance of the construction. This act by a group of national heroes would garner
both worldwide attention, and political support. Over 2,000 veterans are already
organized and poised to arrive at the several encampments, and historic and symbolic
act of reverence to the Sioux Nation is unprecedented. Perhaps this act in conjunction
with the National Monument Status would have the most impact, and could give so
much press to the issue of the pipeline that the project could be halted
A Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway
While reading A Moveable Feast, I felt immersed into Ernest Hemingway s world
and developed a better understanding of him with a human experience. This novel
provides an inside look on both, Hemingway s time in Paris in the 1920s and the
time at the end of his life leading up to his premature death. If one is familiar with
his life, and especially his later years, A Moveable Feastgives insight into his life at
the time of writing his memoir. The text itself is about Paris, but the reflection comes
from an older Hemingway who was sentimental, longing and nostalgic. Regardless of
the comments from family, friends and academics, interpreting the text itself in A
Moveable Feast is the best way to learn about Hemingway and his mindset during the
late 1950s and early 1960s.
Unlike many great books, there are two versions of A Moveable Feast which were
released by individuals separated by two generations. First, there is the 1964 version
which offers the completed and unified memoir on Hemingway s early years in
Paris. It is important to understand that Hemingway never completed the memoir and
his fourth wife, Mary Hemingway, performed much of the editing and final touches.
In contrast, the 2009 version is believed by most to be more accurate to Hemingway
s original manuscripts, but it does not offer a unified story. Even though these
versions are very different from one another they both offer valuable insight on
Hemingway as a person.
Since A Moveable Feast was left unfinished,
Comparison Of The FTC Act And The Lanham Act
Legally, the issue has been brought up that alterations and the deceptive nature of an
edited photo can potentially violate consumer protection laws in the US, specifically
the Federal Trade Commission Act ( FTC Act ) and the Lanham Act. The FTC Act of
1914 covers methods of unfair competition, and it was changed in 1938 to include
unfair or deceptive acts or practices declaring that unfair or deceptive methods of
competition that affect commerce are unlawful. Little change or clarification has
been made to its wording since 1964, making it difficult to keep up with growing
technology (Brown 94) Unfortunately, a lot of the wording in the document assumes
that speech is the key offender in deception rather than the image. However, the

These misrepresentations are often referred to as puffery. There is a fine line
between legal promotion and illegal claims, but terms like Better ingredients, better
pizza or miracle have been considered puffery advertising because, while deceptive,
they are extravagant enough to be seen as advertising and not provable or
measurable. They are defined as a statement or image that is not deceptive, for no
one would rely on its exaggerated claims. (Colaizzi) And, because most consumers in
modern context know about and have some understanding of the power Photoshop
has over images, many more extreme images in advertising can be used as puffery as
well. (Brown
Uglies By Scott Westerfeld Analysis
Imagine the appeal of the promise of supermodel beauty. Amazing right? Did I
mention it s not that simple, and maybe not even that desirable? In the book Uglies
, written by Scott Westerfeld, this is not only the promise, it is societies protocol.
Societies rule is that when you turn 16, you are forced to have cosmetic surgery
resulting in you becoming so called Pretty . The book forces you to confront
matters such as the perception of beauty, the notion of State versus individual
choice and the matter of control. Tally Youngblood, the book s main character, is
taken through a journey of self discovery and exploration of these matters. Initially
Tally believed turning Pretty would be a dream come true and is anxiously
awaiting her sixteenth birthday where she believes her life will be transformed.
She has been led to believe that her beauty will open her life to new and exciting
experiences such as black tie dinners and fun parties. Once her close friends have
left to become Pretty Tally meets a new friend, Shay who shares with Tally a
difference perspective on becoming Pretty . Shay introduces Tally, through adventure
and exploration, to a different world. This opens Tally s mind to different possibilities

The Influence Of Television On American Culture
TV today has a great deal of constructive outcomes and impacts on our public and

T. Rex Fossil
The passage discusses three pieces of evidence found in a fossil of T.Rex fossil,
which could probably indicate the remaining of soft tissues of the animal. However,
the professor is dubious about these new findings authenticity and provides different
reasons to refute the author s claims. First, the author states that the soft and flexible
organic matter which was detected in branching channels inside the fossil bones
might be associated with the remaining of the animal s blood vessels. The professor,
however, opposes this idea by referring to the bacterial activity as a possible source
of the organic substance. According to the professor, after the animal is dead, some
bacterias might colonize in the hollow channels inside the bones.
Rotator Cuff Tears Research Paper
A rotator cuff tear is an injury that plagues much of the elderly population as well as
a variety of athletes. The etiology of a rotator cuff tear is primarily due to the
degeneration of the tendons or more specifically the thinning and disorientation of
collagen fibers and degradation of various cells and tissues. 1 Rotator cufftears are
more likely to occur with age. Rotator cuff tears may occur due to direct trauma such
as falling or shearing linked to a simple throwing or rotation of the arm and shoulder.2
Symptoms of a rotator cuff tear that many patients claim are impingement of the
shoulder and pain while resting or sleeping. However, these symptoms can be
inconclusive and should be considered with caution. For example, pain at night

  • 2. Adjuvants In Vaccines The viruses that cause tumorigenic transformation produce oncoviral antigens. These antigens are recognized by the immune system as non self because they are present on infected cells (Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017). Neoantigens, which are MHC restricted antigens, are produced by mutations in tumor cells so they are not found on all tumors. Because neoantigens are unique to the individual, vaccines that target these antigens need to be personalized (Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017). Finally, antigens that are over expressed significantly in tumor cells compared to normal cells are simply known as overexpressed antigens (Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017). Adjuvants in Vaccines Adjuvants are substances that can boost the immune system. They are extremely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some New Adjuvants Nanoparticles are a recently developed type of adjuvant that help vaccines access the lymph nodes. These nanoparticles can allow the vaccine to be directly deposited into the lymph node, activating DCs and CTLs via intranodal injections. Nanoparticle vaccines may also reach the lymph node by lymphatic drainage. In the lymph node, CD8 CTLs are produced by cross presentation of lymph node DCs (Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017). Nanoparticle vaccines could be vital for the future of cancer treatment. Another new type of adjuvants are self polymerizing scaffolds. They incorporate TLR agonists and peptide antigens. This allows the molecule to remain water soluble at room temperature unlike TLR agonists. The scaffolds undergo temperature dependent self polymerization which makes immunogenic particles water soluble. These particles are drained to the lymph node where they activate DCs (Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017). Albumin binding agonists are effective because of the abundance of albumin in the blood and lymph. Vaccines with albumin binding agonists have TAAs with lipid tails that have a high affinity for albumin. Once bound, the vaccine is taken to lymph nodes. This vaccine type is known to safely advance CD8 CTL activation (Saxena and Bhardwaj 2017). Oncolytic viruses can also be used as vaccine adjuvants in oncolytic virus therapy, also known as virotherapy. This can
  • 3. Prison Life In Prison Essay Opening his eyes, all Jerry sees surrounding him is damp darkness. There are no shadows or people he can see. No windows but an eerie breeze blows past him, sending chills running up his arms. He goes to grab his 3ftX3ft blanket that covers only a portion of his body. The only sense of time he can tell 10am. That is when one of the security guard brings a tray of slop for breakfast. That s only if you consider oatmeal drowned in 6 month old gravy food. With only feeling the sun on his skin for two hours every week, his body craves warmth. Jerry has been in this jail cell for seventeen years for murdering sixteen different people. Jerry pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. While some people side with the opinion of sentencing prisoners to jail for life, others side with the punishment of the death penalty. Sentencing prisoners to life in jail is a major sentence that destroys lives. The life of the prisoner and that family. Knowing deep inside that the prisoners mother or father or siblings will never be able to see them outside of that jail is truly heart breaking. However, they will always know where they are. Compared to the death penalty, many people believe that sentenced to life will show how serious the crime was and that it will not be tolerated. Being in that jail cell for 20+ years is torture and shows that that punishment is all you need to understand and repay your crime. The death penalty costs more, delivers less, and puts innocent lives at risk.

  • 5. Analysis Of Doctrine By Yoan Capote Today, Wednesday, July 5, 2017 I took my first trip ever to the North Carolina Museum in Raleigh North Carolina. I found myself in shock at how much I enjoyed myself looking and analysing all the different types of art pieces that were present in the gallery. While walking around there were so many different types of artwork that I found it hard to decide on which piece to shared about this week. While walking and observing all the beauty that was being seen it amazed me about all the different way an artist could express themselves. While looking and taking in every little detail of each artwork, there was one particular piece of artwork that was very interested. It was called Doctrine by Yoan Capote. Yoan Capote was born in 1977 and is from Cuba. Yoan Capote creates artwork that poetically captures personal experience and universal issues of power, alienation, isolation and restrictions. Capote works symbolize themes of humanity, studying their interface, representation of physical or sensory possibilities. His artwork Doctrine is a sculpture of a cast bronze chair and steel handcuffs. In his artwork, Doctrine the chair is made of wax pulled out of shape by the addition of real hand cuffs, were then cast into bronze. His art is a 3 D in, which made this piece appear more realistic than a painting. As I stood there looking at a Capote sculpture of the chairs it was obvious that he really wanted everyone to see that he had a story that he was trying to tell by
  • 6. Essay on Taiwan Policy Memo Maria Serpas PSCI 356 Dr. Kramer March 19, 2015 Subject: What should US policy towards military assistance to Taiwan be? Historical Background: Taiwan, otherwise known as the Republic of China (ROC), has a complicated political status on the world stage. The People s Republic of China (PRC) lays territorial claims to Taiwan and most countries recognize China as the mainland as Taiwan as an autonomous region within it. However, Taiwan sees itself independent as the true government of China, but only a couple dozen countries recognize it as sovereign government and by technical definition of what constitutes as a sovereign state under the Montevideo Convention of 1933, Taiwan fits the criteria.1 Though before 1971, both countries laid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both economic and security threats are culminated in a general consensus that weapons trade between both countries includes only defensive weapons.5 In 1994, the policy towards Taiwan was reviewed, however no changes were made to the arms sales policy.6 The military assistance the US provides Taiwan with, despite being defensive in nature, is still a source of consternation to the PRC and is a problem for its relations with both Taiwan and the US. Significance: Military assistance to Taiwan is essential for Taiwan s sense of security, but it is also a source of friction with US relations with the PRC. Selling Taiwan an amount of weapons that the PRC considers excessive may lead to increased tensions between both the US and the PRC. Under the TRA, the US still has a degree of obligation in ensuring Taiwanese security. It deems that if US assistance is necessary to maintain peace in the Western Pacific and if Taiwan is forced to make a decision regarding its statehood under non peaceful means the US will intervene in Taiwan s affairs. Currently, this is limited to selling defensive weapons, but not providing further military assistance or performing joint drills like those performed in South Korea. We want so much to see sports solely as an arena of play, not seriousness. But here s the thing, this can cheapen not only the greatness and relevance of sports to us as a society, but also the courage of the athletes . The pursuit of fame, wealth and status can blind the human conscience, which is why it is important for us to encourage athletes to voice their opinions. As a nation, we should not silence our athletes, because it is the truly courageous athletes who have the audacity to stand up when it is socially unacceptable. Sports should be used as a platform for a certain kind of politics such as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike Muhammad Ali, he was pro war, because his son was fighting across seas. As the first African American to play Major League baseball once said, a life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives . Robinson believed it was important to fight for human rights and to make an impact on the nation and its people. He backed the Republican Party and Richard Nixon, but demanded they allow blacks in his administration . Robinson s career with the Brooklyn Dodgers helped change those deep seeded racial stereotypes. Another athlete who took a political stance was Billie Jean King, who fought for equal gender rights in sport. On September 20, 1973 Billie Jean King took on men s champion Bobby Riggs in a battle of the sexes tennis match. Riggs was known for criticizing women s sports and female athletes . King stated, I just had to play, Title IX (the ban on gender discrimination in federally funded educational program) had just passed, and I wanted to change the hearts and minds of people to match the legislation . King beat Riggs in three straight sets, inspiring female athletes across the globe to break gender barriers. Furthermore, King went on to boycott the difference in pay between male and female athletes in tennis. She was the first female tennis player to win more than $100,000 in a season, yet male players were still making three times this amount . The movement resulted in the first
  • 8. How Does Shakespeare Create Sympathy For Macbeth Sympathy for Macbeth in William Shakespeare s Macbeth The sympathy that we have for Macbeth changes greatly as the play progresses. This is due mainly to the role that the other characters, mainly Lady Macbeth, play in influencing his thoughts and decisions. In some cases he seems powerless to stop a chain of events, like the witches prophecies, and at other times just to weak to resist the evil temptations. In this essay I will determine how and why our sympathy for Macbeth changes during the course of the play. Our first impressions of Macbeth are from the descriptions that we get of him from other characters at the beginning of the play. For example the captain calls him Brave Macbeth, and ... However before the close of the scene he comes to an agreement with himself that he will not go out of his way in order to become King of Scotland, If chance will have me king, why chance may crown me/Without my stir. During this scene we learn about Macbeth s possible motives. Would he have ever thought that he could become King, let alone murdering the King, or is it the witches who start off the whole process of Duncan s murder? Initially it is Macbeth that comes up with the idea. I think that the witches appeal to what Macbeth wants to believe, they do not tell him what to think and never tell him how any of their prophecies will come true. They are not the origin of the idea of the murder, they may be appealing to that idea, but they never create it. The witches appear again in the play when Macbeth seeks them out in Act IV and they give him three new prophecies. These prophecies appeal to Macbeth s train of thought. He feels that he is safe if he acts on his desires, as a wood cannot move and a man has to be born of a woman. Again these prophecies do not offer any instructions about what Macbeth should to do. I believe that however much the witches seem to be connected with Macbeth s change of heart, they cannot be blamed for controlling him. They exist in the play as the constant reminder of the potential of evil in the

Throughout his journey, Greek goddess of war and wisdom Athena can be seen as a patroness to Odysseus on his quest (Spencer, 35). She manipulates her form many times throughout The Odyssey, assuming various disguises to assist Odysseus on his journey home. A notable example of this is when she adopts the form of a little girl to lead Odysseus to the palace of the king of Phaiakians, shrouding him in mist to protect him as a stranger in their land (Homer, Book ____9?). Athena s willingness to help this mortal is attributed to the valor and wisdom she sees evident in Odysseus. Meanwhile, Professor McGonagall serves as a clear counterpart to Athena in Harry s world, not so coincidentally named Minerva, her Roman equivalent. McGonagall, professor of transfiguration, is of commensurate wisdom and represents a similar figure in Harry s life. Not only does she fill the role of Harry s teacher and mentor as the Head of Gryffindor, Harry s House, (i.e., his patroness) but her wizarding guile often helps Harry when presented with challenges; this can be viewed as a form of the divine intervention characteristic of Homeric style epics. Furthering this allusion, we are brought to the fact that Minerva is revealed to readers as one of the few registered animagi of her time. This allows for two implications to be drawn: firstly, McGonagall s status as an animagi means she has the power to

Each day seemed to differ little from the previous, and speculation about the future was, as ever, informed by hear say and past experience. As an array of specialty acts, vaudeville was an enterprise without name that, over many years, could be found in the marketplaces of Asia and Europe. It soon became quite taxing for performers to not only live the same shows everyday, but to move on and find other work after they were no longer needed in vaudeville shows. Still, this was not the only reason for the demise of vaudeville, although it played a large part. The largest contributing factor was the invention of the motion picture in the 1930 s. There was no longer a need for people to be entertained by a comical, musical, circus style side show. Now they found a more intimate and fascinating way of enjoying a performance. The first

The Man from Snowy River is a ballad which reinforces the typical Australian Identity, as the rough and tough man who is willing to take risks and challenges. The hero in this poem is brave, resourceful and thrill seeking, displaying the qualities that Russell Ward describes as being part of the mythical Australian Identity. The art that Kiefer created focused on a reconciliation with the shame and horror surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed to redefine what it meant to be German in a post Nazi World (Smith). The piece I studied is located at the MoMa in San Francisco and is entitled Shulamite . Shulamite is a historical paintingof a Nazi Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed the architecture of a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for their victims. Kiefer uses some very interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage, grief, and shame that Germans felt in response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with the country s dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country as no longer representative of it s dark past. The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede towards some flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the hall resemble a sort of dungeon or a sort of oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades of black, and brown. White paint is used to outline the crevices and edges of the bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched black. The dimly lit piece seems to be an interior space solely lit by the series of small flames, and these flames are placed at a

Osmolarity Lab Taylor Kapitanek Biology 200A 005 30 September, 2014 Abstract This Estimating Osmolarity by Change in Weight of Potato Tuber Tissue experiment was conducted to determine the molarity of sucrose concentration where the mass of potato tuber segments does not change, indicating an isosmotic concentration. Indicating an isosmotic concentration was done by calculating the change of mass of the potato tuber cells prior to incubation against the mass after incubation in the sucrose solution. My groups goal was to determine what type of osmotic concentration was created as compared to the potato tissues. The results of my groups lab indicated three different osmotic concentrations. The percent change in mass of the potato cells is positive when incubated in concentrations of 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2 M of sucrose. At these four specific solutions, a hypotonic environment was obtained within the cell. An isotonic solution was achieved when the sucrose solution is around 0.175 M. Based on the results from the experiment, our alternative hypothesis was

The majority of the literature, as expected, focuses primarily on the IRB approach, as this aspect of Basel II has drawn the most criticism from financial practitioners and academics alike. Within the specified Tier 1 requirement, common shares and retained earnings should be a priority and form the predominant form of capital. To ensure the quality of this capital, the Basel Committee should harmonize capital deductions and prudential filters (FSF BCBS, 2009). The committee should also enhance the disclosure of the components of regulatory capital in order to increase transparency within the system and avoid confusion in terms of the quality of capital required. (2) The Basel Committee should make adjustments to their framework to inhibit excessive cyclicality of the minimum capital requirements The Basel Committee has made a reasonable effort to mitigate this cyclicality already, by monitoring the impact of cyclicality through data collection (via their Capital Monitoring Group). This data is available every 6 months, and helps the committee monitor the extent to which the capital regime reveals excessively high levels of capital cyclicality. In correspondence with this data monitoring, the Basel Committee must review the ways in which cyclicality, arising from the Pillar 1 capital requirement calculation, can be abated. They must try and maintain the risk sensitivity of the inputs, but also create an emphasis on dampening the effects of cyclicality on the outputs. This way the

In this essay I hope to state clearly some of the popularly mentioned themes running through the poem, and to carefully delineate many aspects of the author s style. Many critics feel that the speech of Hrothgar between lines 1700 and 1784 encapsulates the moral of the poem.... He does not know the worse till inside him great arrogance grows and spreads (Shippey 38). Is the theme of the poem that pride kills? So indeed, Shippey may be correct in asserting that Hrothgar s advice that pride as the downfall of great people especially, is the theme of the poem. According to the USDA, Americans waste enough food every day to fill a 90,000 seat football stadium (USDA). The food that the schools donate would go to the needy. Also, according to David Seifman, writer for the New York Post, New York spends way too much money on food waste saying they spend more than three hundred million dollars to ship ten thousand, 800 tons of trash every day to landfills (Seifman). Alan Greenspan, who spent eighteen years as the chairman of the Federal Reserve, showed great efforts to assure that America didn t experience an economic disaster. Predicting the economic downturn that became the 1958 recession was my first forecast of the economy as a whole (47 Greenspan). His mindset was constantly full of ideas that would make the economy more stimulated. The Federal Reserve has many jobs to accomplish such as moderating long term interest rates to increase investment. When the economy is performing strongly, the Feds will raise interest rates in order to slow down the economy. This may sound like a bad idea, but in reality it must be done to ensure that our economy stays in equilibrium. We do not want our economy doing too well but we do not want it doing too poorly either. When the Feds change the interest rates the banks that borrow money from the Fed get directly affected because the loaning price of the money either lowers or rises in response to the interest rates. On the other hand, when the Fed lowers interest rates, it means the economy is performing poorly. Lowering interest rates makes money more accessible for the banks to borrow. When the Fed tightens, the stock market tends to not perform well. While the Fed had no explicit mandate to focus on the stock market, the effects of the run up in prices seemed to me a legitimate concern (175 Greenspan). To explain, higher interest rates creates a lower demand for stocks, causing stock prices to fall. Lower interest rates creates a higher demand for stocks, causing stock prices to rise. When the demand for stocks fall, the demand for bonds will increase. Interest rates and bond prices are inversely related. This means that when interest rates rise, the demand for bonds fall. Alan Greenspan had a significant contribution to why our economy is the way it is

But we are shown that he is still careless now, as well in a casual way by saying I just shrug . He is also unsympathetic, and justifies his actions like Dan. In this particular occasion, the full stop emphasises a space of time where Dan had no regret of what he had done with no disgust, but suddenly the opposite is true over a moment in time. A couple of vicious verbs used in this same stanza, are sickening tug , which shows that Dan was sickened by things that he had done with his violent actions. I think that the up until the final two verses, Heaney s outlook is that of a young boy, who doesn t understand why something so cruel should happen. Heaney then shows his maturity again by showing his understanding that the kittens, or pests , did actually have to be removed. In the final stanza, a feeling of regret still takes place where he is trying to convince himself that he did the right thing and that the kittens are better off dead than alive. Overall in this poem, it is made up of 3 simple line stanzas, where the first and third lines rhyme. In the poem Follower ,the voice is of the son. He is speaking about his father who he looks up to and admires. The poem starts with the lines My father worked with a horse plough, his shoulders globed like a full sail strung . The concept has existed in many private schools, but it is a new system of education for public schools. Single sex education advocates often cite learning differences as evidence for the benefits of separating male and femalestudents in the classroom. However, other experts suggest that segregating by sex can increase genderstereotyping. Essentially, effective teaching depends on the engagement and excitement of students regarding certain material. While it may be easier for students at single sex schools to participate in class and succeed academically, the real world is not composed of one sex. Additionally, co educational schools offer more diversity and a realistic social ecosystem. However, students may become distracted by the opposite sex, hindering their academic successes. Single sex education: the pros and cons by Kristin Stanberry and Research Spotlight on Single Gender Education are two articles that pinpoint the advantages and disadvantages of single sex education. The burglars were eventually captured and arrested, but one of the burglars implicated then President of the United States of America, Richard Nixon, in the planning of the break in. After weeks of subpoenas from congress, demanding tapes that were used to record the activities in the White House. It was then that Richard Nixonwould irrevocably change America s future by doing something that every president had done before him, he would use executive privilege to block the investigation into the White House s role into the Watergate break in. By invoking executive privilege, Richard Nixon proved his guilt and permanently changed how Americans viewed the president s use of executive privilege. Of course, this was not the first time executive privilege had been invoked. In 1776, George Washington used an offshoot version of executive privilege to withhold documents relating to a failed military expedition. Although Washington did hand over the documents to Congress, it would be forever noted that this would be the first example of executive privilege. Despite not actually using it, it is still seen as the first use of executive privilege in American history. In the beginning, it is assumed from George Washington s letter to Congress regarding executive privilege that he intended executive privilege to be used for America s well being and not for personal gain.

Sensing Materials 1. Optical Fibers: Fiber optic sensors with crack monitoring capability have been developed by Wolff and Messelier (1992), Ansari et al (1993); Voss and Wanser (1994).It is also used to detect moisture content. A sensor for moisture detection have been developed by Michie et al (1994). 2. Piezoelectric materials: Piezoelectric materials have two unique properties which are interrelated. When a piezoelectric material is deformed, it gives off a small but measurable electrical material it experiences a significant increase in size (up to a 4% change in volume). They are often used to measure fluid compositions, fluid density, fluid viscosity, or the force of an impact. In stress and pressure sensing, the PVDF materials have been found to give a better electrical response. Actuating Materials 1.Piezoelectric materials: A piezoceramic material can be used as a strain sensor by taking advantage of the direct piezoelectric effect that converts a mechanical action into an electric charge. But the same material can be also used for actuation applications by using the converse piezoelectric effect that.converts an electrical field into a mechanical strain. 2. Another possible solution to the harmful consequences I ve outlined is organizing a group of military veterans to camp at the reservation, and stand with the protesters in defiance of the construction. This act by a group of national heroes would garner both worldwide attention, and political support. Over 2,000 veterans are already organized and poised to arrive at the several encampments, and historic and symbolic act of reverence to the Sioux Nation is unprecedented. Perhaps this act in conjunction with the National Monument Status would have the most impact, and could give so much press to the issue of the pipeline that the project could be halted
  • 52. A Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway While reading A Moveable Feast, I felt immersed into Ernest Hemingway s world and developed a better understanding of him with a human experience. This novel provides an inside look on both, Hemingway s time in Paris in the 1920s and the time at the end of his life leading up to his premature death. If one is familiar with his life, and especially his later years, A Moveable Feastgives insight into his life at the time of writing his memoir. The text itself is about Paris, but the reflection comes from an older Hemingway who was sentimental, longing and nostalgic. Regardless of the comments from family, friends and academics, interpreting the text itself in A Moveable Feast is the best way to learn about Hemingway and his mindset during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Unlike many great books, there are two versions of A Moveable Feast which were released by individuals separated by two generations. First, there is the 1964 version which offers the completed and unified memoir on Hemingway s early years in Paris. It is important to understand that Hemingway never completed the memoir and his fourth wife, Mary Hemingway, performed much of the editing and final touches. In contrast, the 2009 version is believed by most to be more accurate to Hemingway s original manuscripts, but it does not offer a unified story. Even though these versions are very different from one another they both offer valuable insight on Hemingway as a person. Since A Moveable Feast was left unfinished,

Little change or clarification has been made to its wording since 1964, making it difficult to keep up with growing technology (Brown 94) Unfortunately, a lot of the wording in the document assumes that speech is the key offender in deception rather than the image. There is a fine line between legal promotion and illegal claims, but terms like Better ingredients, better pizza or miracle have been considered puffery advertising because, while deceptive, they are extravagant enough to be seen as advertising and not provable or measurable. They are defined as a statement or image that is not deceptive, for no one would rely on its exaggerated claims.
