WORK CULTURE
Work culture plays an important role in extracting the best out
of employees and making them stick to the organization for a
longer duration.
 An organization is said to have a strong work culture when the
employees follow the organization’s rules and regulations and
adhere to the existing guidelines
It is the work culture which decides the way employees interact
with each other and how an organization functions.
GOOGLE’S WORK CULTURE
Google had an informal work culture
The founder’s wanted to make Google a fun place to work
 Google has a flat structure, which means they have minimal
middle and upper-level management.
This structure allows for more creativity. Innovation and problem-
solving skills are encouraged.
Employees have the ability to make more decisions on projects.
Google's open culture allows a free flow of information
throughout the company, and everyone can share their ideas
and opinions.
Google has a 'TGIF' meeting every Friday, where employees
can meet with top executives and give ideas or ask questions.
Google supports an open line of communication through
meetings, email and an open door policy to any office in the
company.
Google’s mission statement and corporate culture reflect a
philosophy that you can make money without doing evil and
that work should be challenging and the challenge should be
fun.
HIRING PEOPLE
They focus on recruiting people with right frame of mind.
In order to attract high performing candidates Google posted top 10 reasons
to work for Google on its website.
Google recruited people with diverse skills and qualities.
While recruiting Google attached a lot of importance to the academic
excellence
To get an interview call from Google, a person had to be from a top ranking
university.
GOOGLE’S UNIQUENESS
Google showers its employees with unique perks.
Google provides a complete Gourmet meal, 3 times a day, to its
employees.
Google believes that its employees should not have to go more than
150 feet for food. Therefore, it has food stations placed everywhere
within the 150 feet for the employees.
Google has a real job profile named “Chief Cultural Officer” who is
responsible to retain Google’s cultures
A Google employee is named a “Googler” and a new employee
is given the name of “Noogler”.
Google is a dog friendly company that allows its employees to
bring their well-behaved canines to office with them.
 Google loves the environment so it formed Google Green that
is dedicated towards developing renewable energy supplies.
Google encourages its engineers to spend 20% of their time on
ideas of their own. Google has many products that came out of
this 20% idea.
Googlers can ride company provided bicycles around the
Googleplex.
Google provides on-site physicians and nurses, who make sure the
employees do not have to leave the campus for medical checkups.
Google believes that happy and healthy employees are the best
employees
 Google provides its employees with comprehensive health coverage
that also covers their families’ health care requirements.
 Googlers can request to work anywhere for a change of mood. They
do not have to go and sit in their cubicles every day.
 Google like charitable work so made Google.org to develop
technologies to help address global challenges and supports
innovative partners through grants, investments and in-kind
resources.
QUESTIONS
DO YOU THINK THE WORK ENVIRONMENT AT
GOOGLE WOULD COMPEL EMPLOYEES TO GIVE
THEIR BEST? EXPLAIN THE REASONS.
Yes, I think the work environment at Google will compel the
employees to give out their best.
Google’s policy is to make the work more fun
The employee’s at Google is getting better and far more
facilities than any other organization
The Google is following a unique work culture.
There are so many reasons that compel the employees to work
at Google.
Health care facilities for the employees and their family plus
on-site physician and dental care at the headquarters.
Vacation days and holidays and also flexible working hours.
Maternity and parental leave. Google’s maternity leave plan was 12
weeks paid time off.
Google child care center, just 5 minutes from the headquarters.
Fuel efficiency vehicle incentive plan.
Employee discounts
Onsite dry cleaning, plus a coin free laundry room.
Innovation in their technologies
Appreciation as a motivation tool.
ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC REASONS WHY OTHER
COMPANIES ARE NOT ABLE TO EMULATE GOOGLE’S
EXPERIMENT AND CONVERT WORK INTO FUN? IF YES,
PROVIDE EXAMLES AND JUSTIFY THE ANSWER
 Yes it is clear that other companies can not emulate the work
culture followed by the Google.
 It includes huge investment in order to set up a work place that
provides fun during their work.
 It is basically based on the trust that the management of
Google have on their employees.
 It is not acceptable by most of the other organisations.
 It is clear that Google is following an unique work culture.
The most of the other companies felt that company’s culture
was not set to manage its growth.
Google’s recruitment process was also criticized by analysts.
They focus only on the academic excellent candidates.
But it may not be possible by all the companies.
The work culture of Google can not be copied and pasted
Google’s culture has been conceived, developed and honed for
Google: it’s not a template to be lifted and applied universally.
