The prospect of autonomous vehicles – and silent electric ones at that – is terrifying to many people. They will soon be faced with vehicles that look different to the cars of today (whose design is constrained by chassis and combustion engine space requirements), are powered by a different energy source, and require a different type of driver. Is a computer algorithm and real-time sensor/actuator system any different from employing a liveried chauffeur to perform the mysterious act of “driving” and controlling the car? Not really. And are our towns and cities suited to these new vehicles? No they are not, and they will need to be rebuilt. It is time for change. It will happen, and people will accept that change, but there will be difficulties along the way.

Lattice Energy LLC-Why has Tesla Model S had more thermal runaways than Nissa...Lewis Larsen
- Many have wondered why the Tesla Model S has experienced three catastrophic battery thermal runaway fires to date whereas the Nissan Leaf has apparently not experienced any such runaway incidents, at least so far.
- Answer to this question can potentially be found with simple calculations that utilize manufacturers’ estimated frequencies of battery field-failure events.
- By employing a limited number of key simplifying basic assumptions and manufacturers’ statistical data on estimated rates of field-failures, we can predict that the Nissan Leaf would be likely to experience a substantially lower frequency of major thermal runaway fire events compared to the Tesla Model S, which is exactly what has been observed so far to date.
- Predicted number of observed macro-scale thermal runaway events appears to be accurate to within roughly one order of magnitude, i.e., a factor of ~10.
- This level of accuracy suggests that thermal runaway events to date have likely been caused by internal field failures (whatever the trigger) rather than by mechanical damage via violent piercing of battery packs by metal objects.

In their State of Green Business report, the GreenBiz Group listed gamification as one of the top sustainable business trends of 2012, noting that game mechanics are increasingly used by companies to provide “rewards for making good, green choices” (Makower, 2012). In the last few years, we have seen a surge of interest in green gamification, which is beginning to touch upon nearly all aspects of our everyday life from cars that rank and reward fuel-efficient driving performance (e.g., the Nissan Leaf) to sanitation services that monitor and reward home recycling behavior (e.g., Recyclebank). As Ashok Kamal, the CEO of the green social media marketing company Bennu notes, this movement represents a “tidal wave of green gamification that is capturing the attention of the green community and the business community as a whole” (Cousteau, Kamal, Freeman, & Pank, 2012).
Given such vibrant enthusiasm surrounding “green gamification,” it is hard not to react with some degree of skepticism. Climate change, pollution, and other human-driven environmental ills are complex, multi-faceted problems—can gamification actually play a serious role in their solution? In this talk, I attempt to provide a partial answer by providing a teaser for my new chapter on gamifying green to come out this year in the book “The Gameful World” edited by Steffen P. Walz and Sebastian Deterding. To learn more, go here: www.gamefulworld.org.

The economics of sharecars compared to individually owning one pptBrittany Fowler
The aim of the following investigation is to analyse the economics of sharecars in comparison to that of owning a vehicle in Brisbane. This is being conducted in order to determine whether sharecar programs would prove economically successful if implemented within Brisbane, Australia’s transport system. The investigation was conducted through researching the variables that attribute to the economic value of a vehicle. These variables include but are not limited to the kilometres travelled, insurance payed and registration payed on a vehicle annually. The sharecar programs present in Australia were researched and broken down into annual costs. The economic results of individually owning a vehicle were then compared to the economics of utilising a sharecar program. These two data sets were compared, discussed and summarised to ultimately determine that economically, a sharecar program has the potential to be economically successful in Brisbane. However when taking into account the transport preferences and lifestyle of the user the success of the sharecar program within Brisbane is undeterminable. Further investigations in regards to this matter should be considered within future studies.

The Swedish Armed Forces are recruiting. They need young men and women for an occupation that in many ways is about giving up your own safety in order to help others. They wanted to activate the target group while simultaneously raising the question. Would people sacrifice their own freedom for someone they have no relation to? Are people prepared to show that they care in ways that don’t include sharing something on Facebook or tweeting a specific hash-tag?

In an attempt to recruit a large number of workers for their new megastore in Australia, IKEA amusingly decided to include what they called ‘Career Instructions’ into each of their flat packs. Based on their traditional furniture instructions, all customers took home the witty application forms without realising. The clever initiative not only minimised the costs on advertising, but it also ensured IKEA fans were targeted.

Internet revolution - Dr. Manu Melwin Joy - School of Management Studies, Coc...manumelwin
The computer networking revolution began in the early 1960s and has led us to today s technology. The Internet was first invented for military purposes, and then expanded to the purpose of communication among scientists. The invention also came about in part by the increasing need for computers in the 1960s. The Internet is bringing a revolution along with it. Access to information combined with global supply and demand is reshaping established conventions and destroying old world definitions.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
