After 2015 we should expect at least half of the drivers in
this age bracket to retire
Staff surveys conducted suggest that
out of the 259,000 drivers - 33,000
over 60’s would retire in 2015, along
with up to another 37,500 drivers in a
younger age bracket.
• In April 2012, 299,000
professionally employed HGV
drivers in the UK.
• January 2015 we have seen a
13% decline to 259,000.
• 16% are 60 or over. 59% are over
45 and fewer than 3% are under
25. The average driver age is 50

The need for new trained drivers
Expected retirees in 2015This would take 70,000 drivers out
of the workforce within two years;
and cut available driver numbers by
23.4%.

LGV Simulator (Video)
LGV Simulator
What is it?
An effective training tool that delivers immediate benefits and long
term savings
As a logistics operator, you are aware that there is a growing shortage of competent,
well-trained drivers available.
Training your own drivers is a costly and time consuming process, which until now,
has taken highly valued vehicles off the road.
Transline has developed a unique solution – our mobile LGV, car and van Simulator
Training System.
Now rigorous and effective training can be done anywhere, at any time, ensuring
that drivers are properly trained for any condition in a controlled and safe
environment.
LGV Simulator
What is it?
An innovative solution to an industry wide problem
At a stroke, our mobile LGV Simulator has revolutionised driver training; allowing
accurate driving techniques to be taught, and performance measured accurately
which saves logistics companies huge sums of money every year.
It has also had a major impact on insurance premiums by reducing the risks of
sending inexperienced drivers out on the road without sufficient training.
The sophistication of the simulator has been developed and adapted for the driving
and logistics sector from a 747 aircraft simulator. The simulator is housed in a
custom designed trailer unit which enables it to be brought to wherever it is needed.
A highly realistic technical, visual and sound environment ensures total immersion in
a ‘virtual’ training scenario.
LGV Simulator
What is it?
Technical information
• The comprehensive three dimensional database creates realistic road networks,
traffic and weather driving experiences
• Genuine truck manufacturer parts and a motion platform are incorporated to
reproduce longitudinal and lateral accelerations in a very realistic way
• Forced feedback steering is incorporated
• Different types and sizes of vehicle can be programmed in as well as the option
to change the load.
• 3 large screens give a 180 degree field of view
• 6 rear view mirrors reproduce realistic reversing conditions.
• Dolby ‘surround sound’ produces authentic environmental noises as well as
giving verbal instructions
LGV Simulator
What is it?
How it works
Each driver is allocated an individual user profile to monitor performance for each
session as well as cumulatively over multiple sessions demonstrating improvements
and areas of improvement and development required. The driver trainer, along with
on-site staff and end user management, can then access and review the
performance data.
The simulator enables a level of training to be achieved that would be impossible to
replicate by taking a driver out on the open road. Drivers can be tested in a range of
simulated conditions and their response to hazards in a safe and controlled
environment. The conditions are detailed on later slides.
The simulator is JAUPT approved to deliver 1 module of the driver CPC which is
unrivalled by any other training operator. Other CPC modules are also offered at the
training academy.
All of the above results in drivers who are better qualified and prepared than those
who have been trained conventionally and at a fraction of the cost.
LGV Simulator
What is it?
The simulator can be adapted to many different vehicle models and to
train different licence holders.

More Technical information
• Gears - are and can be configured in line with Manufacturers specs for the
vehicle type selected eg. Auto, semi Auto, Manual straight 4, 6 , 8 , 4 over 4 with
range change and splitter
• Steering - Non Assisted, Assisted, Over Assisted
• Powertrain - You can choose various manufacturer specs i.e engine size,
output, torques
• Tyres - Normal, over inflated, under inflated, worn out, destroyed / punctured
• Load - Can be loaded from 0% - 125 %. This can be adjusted in increments of
1%
• Poweraids – ABS Vehicle, ABS Trailer, Traction Control
LGV Simulator
What is it?
Simulated road and track areas
Training Area - The simulator has a training area module which enables dedicated
training on specific subject.
Test Track - get used to vehicle, gears, speed etc.
Reversing Area – Reverse onto a bay, parallel park, reverse at 60 degree angle
(park between two vehicles)
Reverse - Similar to DSA test, through cones whilst manoeuvring vehicle.
Slow speed manoeuvre exercise
LGV Simulator
What is it?
Real Time settings from the iPad – The driver trainer can at any stage change
certain conditions to test the drivers ability to change and also to train in
circumstances where the driver may have never experienced a scenario.
Weather – weather can change in any form required. An important scenario is rain/hail and snow
generating slippery road conditions and how the driver must adjust their driving style to
compensate for this.
Wind- The direction of the wind can be changed.
Visibility - Varying weather conditions can impede the visibility in particular fog and heavy rain
when the windscreen wipers are in use.
Brake Fade - The trainer can simulate brake fade and how to handle the situation in a safe and
controlled manner.
Punctures- A blow out on any of the tyres can be simulated to test and train the driver when
they might have never experienced this scenario.
Load- Due to excessive breaking or accelerating, load can be shifted in the trailer. Shifing load
can massively change the performance of the vehicle.
Vehicle in Front applying brakes - Sudden braking by the vehicle in front can cause serious
risk and the driver can be assessed on how they manage the situation.
LGV Simulator
What is it?
The benefits it can bring to your business
The simulator has received excellent client feedback. Almost without exception, they
have reported marked improvements in the reduction of accidents, fuel efficiency,
driver perception, workforce moral, delivery times and lower insurance premiums.
More specifically:
• To reduce the use and maintenance costs of client vehicles.
• To Train drivers in fuel efficient driving techniques resulting in an average of 6% for clients but
as much as 20% for certain drivers.
• To reduce your CO2 emissions and contribute to environmental targets.
• To reduce hazards and risks for client drivers, with a positive effect on insurance premiums.
• To achieve rational, responsible and economical driving amongst a large number of drivers
• To contribute to sustainable development and reduce labour turnover.
• To adapt practical training programmes according to the abilities of each driver.
• To analyse the driver’s behaviour towards specific scenarios in realistic conditions.
• To improve driver’s and other road users’ safety.
