6. Role of the Career Counsellor
• Helping to ensure that each pupil’s curriculum is broad
and balanced and appropriate to his or her career
intentions as they develop;
• Providing a program of career education as part of the
curriculum for each pupil;
• Suggesting ways in which relevance and practicality can
be pursued;
• Pointing to the dangers of sex or racial stereotyping or
setting too low expectations;
• Helping other teachers to relate their work to local
industry and commerce;
• Searching out opportunities for links with employees;

• Ensuring that work experience for pupils is properly
matched to individual’s needs;
• Using the available information technologies to the full;
• Maintaining readily available information on further and
higher education, training and job opportunities and
seeing that it is used well;

counselling to students and their parents;
• Working closely with the Careers Service – monitoring the
progress of each pupil during their transition from school

THE CAREER COUNSELLOR
• To form and organize the school counselling committee.
• To set-up an educational and occupational information
center in the school.
• To give orientation talks to students regarding guidance
services available in the school.
• To give orientation talks to class X students and their
parents with regard to the electives available in the senior
secondary school.
• To give orientation talks to class XII students with regard to
university and non-university courses, apprenticeship
schemes, etc.
• To collect and display educational and occupational
information.
9. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF
THE CAREER COUNSELLOR
• To disseminate occupational and educational
information through talks, group discussions, film-
shows, etc.
• To prepare news albums.
• To arrange career talks by experts from different fields.
• To organize career days, career weeks, career
conferences etc.
• To arrange individual discussions with students and
parents for giving them educational and occupational
information.
• To notify employment opportunities available to
secondary and senior secondary school students.
