mention in linguistics research articles than scholars affiliated with Ukrainian universities, who avoid
using them completely and rely on plural forms. This confirms the previous findings that primarily
plural self mention is employed in academic writing in Slavic languages (Vassileva, 1998), and that
academic texts in English by native speakers show the greatest use of singular forms in comparison to
other languages (Flottum, 2005; Molino, 2010; Vassileva, 1998; Wu Zhu, 2014; Yakhontova, 2002;
2006). It can be assumed that, in American academic culture, scholars tend to establish their presence
in the articles and show that research has been carried out exclusively by them and that the method
and interpretations of findings are based on their own judgement. This way they might acknowledge
the fact that although research should be an objective presentation of reality, it is still subjective
because it is interpreted and documented by a researcher. In addition, since Americans are
representatives of an individualistic culture, they might be willing to identify their personal
contributions to the discourse.

B.C.E., Cyrus revolted against the Medes, and in 550 B.C.E., defeated Astyages and the Medes,
becoming the first ruler of the Persian Empire. Looking to expand his empire in 547 B.C.E., Cyrus
then attacked Lydia, capturing both Lydia and the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia (Making Europe
53). A few later, in 539 B.C.E., Cyrus ventured into Mesopotamia, capturing Babylon with barely any
retaliation. Based upon the respect that Cyrus showed towards the Babylonians, the cities of Syria and
Palestine soon respected the authority of Cyrus the Great (Making Europe 54). In 535 B.C.E., Cyrus
also displays his religious conciliation of his subject peoples by allowing the Jews to leave Babylon
and return home, which first began the Jewish Diaspora. It is evident that Cyrus rule over his growing
Persian Empire was filled with tolerance and respect towards his subject peoples.
After the defeat of the Medes and the beginning of the Persian Empire in 550 B.C.E., Cyrus was

Fascism is a type of extremist, right wing, totalitarian and nationalist ideology which first emerged
during the beginning of the 20th century in Europe. The growth of fascism in Europe after the end of
the First World War was caused by a combination of the socio economic and political conditions
which enabled Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler to come to power over the period prior to the
Second World War. Indeed, Blinkhorn comments that European fascism is, and always will be,
inextricably associated with the years between the end of the First World War and the end of the
Second (Blinkhorn 7). These conditions saw the development of nationalist ideologies and the
emergence of the fascist party in Italy and the National Socialist Party in Germany.
The main features of fascism as implemented by Mussolini and Hitler were based on nationalist,
expansionist foreign policies in combination with domestic policies which boosted the economy and
