The Byzantine Empire lasted from 476 CE to 1400 CE. It emerged after the fall of the Western Roman Empire when Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople. The Byzantines combined Greek and Roman culture and Christianity became the dominant religion. They adopted many aspects of the Roman Empire including its legal system, infrastructure, and Greco-Roman architectural styles. However, the Byzantine Empire eventually fell as it lost land to other civilizations and Constantinople was conquered by the Ottomans in 1453 CE.
