Wiseblood Movie Vs Book
2. Wiseblood can be described as hopeful throughout the novel and movie because of Hazel s struggle
to wrap his mind around Christianity. In the first scene of the movie version of Wiseblood, Hazel asks
the lady sitting across from him on the train whether or not she thinks she has been saved by Jesus. He
then launches into his spiel about why she can not be saved and that Jesus never washed everyone s
sins away with his blood (Wiseblood). While this may not seem hopeful, it is made clear that Hazel is
trying to convince himself that Jesus did not save him from his sins. The fact that Hazel is trying to
convince himself that Jesus can not wash sins away is why the book is described as hopeful. His
struggle with religion shows that Hazel still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
O Connor chose character names to help show the role religion plays in her novel, Wiseblood. Enoch
is based off of Enoch from the Bible. Enoch was the great grandfather of Noah. He walked with God
and lived until he was 365 years old. He was very wise and some say that he never died; he just went
to Heaven to live with God. In the novel and the movie, Enoch had wiseblood that he inherited from
his father (O Connor). The fact that Enoch inherited his wisdom from his father shows that Enoch was
based off of Enoch from the Bible who walked with God, The Father. Enoch also did not die at the end
of the book, he simply ran away in the gorilla suit, which goes back to the story of Enoch when he
went to live in Heaven with God instead of dying. Sabbath was named after the sabbath. Her name did
not show her true character though. She turned out to not be innocent at all. In the movie, she tries to
be very seductive with her movements when she is around Hazel. She even tells Hazel how she wrote
a letter to a columnist for advise about necking (Wiseblood). She symbolizes all of the people who say
they are Christians when they are actually just frauds. Then there is Asa Hawks, who is blind. Hawks
can be compared to Saul changed into Paul. Saul was an atheist who was blinded by God, he
eventually became a Christian and was granted his sight back. Hawks was a preacher that decided he
was going to blind himself in front of a crowd with lye (O Connor). However, he did not have the
courage to go through with it (O Connor), so he just pretended to be blind. O Connor used her
characters to illustrate the role of religion in Haze s

The advantages of seeking out professional snow removal services include but not limited to the
following;
1. Reduced Risk of Developing Certain Health Conditions
A few years ago, a study of emergency room heart patients in Ontario, Canada, revealed that 7 percent
of the patients had been shoveling snow when they first suffered from the symptoms of heart
problems.
Shoveling, a hand held snow blower can cause unexpected increase in blood pressure as well as heart
rate. Another thing is that the freezing, cold air can cause contraction of the blood vessel and reduce
the amount of oxygen supply to the heart. This can increase the heart rate leading to a fatal heart
attack, especially for the middle aged people with a family history of heart problems.
What s more, shoveling over prolonged periods of time may also cause back problems. Therefore, it is
a good decision to invest in a commercial snow removal service.
2. Commercial Snow Removal Companies Have the Right Tools of the Trade and Expertise
A professional commercial snow removal company has the proper equipment and experts that are
needed to handle your snow removal project safely, effectively and

Toronto Gender Roles
At the University of Toronto, specific areas are regulated and represented using university safety
protocols. This paper will highlight the attempt of the university to classify those specific areas and
genders, including the connotations involved with the representations. A representation analysis of
certain areas being an inherent danger to students will be presented with its implications. After, the
gender binary will be analyzed through the safety protocol applying to students and how the rules can
alter student behaviour, along with how the mythic structures incorporated in the representations can
influence and be represented in the protocol.

The tips act as a policy that recognize ongoing suspicious occurrences and advises students to always
stay vigilant of their surroundings. The policy designates duty for the student to report suspicious
behaviour, such as unauthorized personnel in unauthorized areas and abandoned parcels in unusual
locations. The University of Toronto campus is a high traffic area and any provided information can be
helpful is preventing danger. Thus, the designation for students to report suspicious behaviour is
reasonable. The policy prompts the concern of unknown people and objects through its representation
of danger. On the contrary, students do not know every individual on the campus and it is unjustified
to have a policy implying that every unknown person can act suspiciously. The policy suggests
students should stray from their daily routine when they feel as if they are in danger. Students are
encouraged to travel in groups as being alone increases vulnerability. Through representation, the
university does not protect a vulnerable student. The university merely provides policies and tips for
the vulnerable student and the onus is on the student to be educated with those policies. The policies

International Hospitality Industry Has Been Affected By...
Introduction In the past few years, international hospitality industry has been affected by globalisation,
revolution of information technology, fragmentation of customer demand, and the emergence of
economic integration of supplier in the networks. Globalisation means a process to reduce the barriers
between one country to another (Brotherthon, 2003). Hence, it is a critical issue in the industry where
the essence of the product is international and the encounter with the customer is intercultural. The
hospitality industry has often been called as people business (Downling et al., 2008). Therefore,
Human Resource Management (HRM) plays a crucial role in the industry as it understands the human
aspects on the organisation. HRM deals with people in the organisation how to manage their
behaviour and activities in order to increase the organisation s profit. It has the function in the
organisation to focus on recruiting the management and providing directions for the people in the
organisations. Moreover, it deals with issues related to people, such as performance management,
hiring, wellness, benefit, safety, compensation, training, and communication (Hayes Ninemeler, 2009).
HRM is one of the phenomenon which has property to change under globalisation effect. It is both and
academic theory and business practice. From the HRM perspective, an international hospitality
industry is a caricature, where in reality derived from the local management structures,

What Is the Importance of Accountability in the Military...
What is the importance of accountability in the military and in the work place? What is accountability
by definition: (Department Of Defense) The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation
on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person
having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds.
Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with
custody, care, and safekeeping. Accountability is very important because it allows for your chain of

Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that s why the team member should make sure
that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all times. The
Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the Army expects to
know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the
Army. Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs will be met. If someone is
accountable, you can trust that they will do what they claimed. Without accountability you would not
be able to put your trust in someone to complete a job for you and other members of the team, or even
show up on time to an important event ,or formation. It is important because it holds each and
everyone accountability for his or her actions.Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept
responsibility or to account for ones actions. Now for the Army, it becomes an obligation more than
willingness while you have to be willing to do it as well. Those that are unable to be accountable are
the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. Basically it is the understanding that from
the bottom up. Top down and laterally everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even
when no one else is looking. This is practiced at your home base where everyone is assigned

The Qualities And Traits Of Leaders Essay
2 The qualities and traits of leaders
A number of leadership traits almost come directly from within. These are the qualities that might be
harder to train, but which make leading other people smoother.
Committed
A good leader has to show commitment. Fulfilling your vision won t happen overnight and you need
to be able to convince everyone else that you won t disappear when things get tough. If you make a
promise, you need to keep it. You can t just preach about achieving A, B and C, but you need to show
that you are actually going to do it.
Commitment matters for two reasons. First, when you show commitment you help build trust. The
team and anyone involved with the project will be able to trust your word. Trust will keep work
morale up and help you achieve objectives faster since people don t need to second guess what your
objectives are. But furthermore, the second aspect of commitment is about setting an example. As
mentioned throughout the article, leadership is about setting an example and if you show commitment
to your word, your subordinates will be inspired to stick to their promises. Using your own example of
hard work, you will ensure the people around you feel motivated to do the same thing.
Passionate
Passion should be at the heart of everything you do. It doesn t matter whether you are a leader of a
multibillion company or a lumberjack, without passion, you won t achieve success. You can
understand its importance when you view it as the fuel to your truck.

Political Correctness In Blazing Saddles
I don t think a movie like Blazing Saddles could be made today. Movies, money, and political
correctness, the new golden rule in American life, which is to never joke about anything that may be
deemed even remotely offensive or upsetting by any segment of the population for any reason. Watch
a movie like Dirty Harry or a Marilyn Monroe film, and they are tame compared to what we see in
today s horror movies like Saw . But with Hollywood comedy, it has gone in a different direction, in
the name of political correctness. I do not think a movie like Blazing Saddles could be made today.
Political correctness makes movie production companies not want to take risks. There is a good reason
for movie companies to play it safe today and it has little to do with the delicate sensibilities of the

Vision Vision, whether linked to an institution, business, or individual, provides purpose and is critical
to success. As argued by McFarland, Senn, and Childress (1994), Vision is to an organization what
purpose is to an individual. Any individual who has strong life purpose is naturally motivated and
moved to action. A vision for an organization has the same power, serving as a higher purpose (p.94).
Establishing a clear vision brings a sense of unity and inspiration, whereby members of the team gain
a sense of self motivation to follow in the same direction (McFarland, et.al.). Ownership of a vision
does not rest solely on the leader; in contrast, uniting members of an organization and enabling them
to share in the purpose are critical. Visionary leaders have the compassion and commitment to a cause
that inspire those around them to believe in what they are doing. Visionary Leadership: Personal to
Organizational Commitment Vision is a critical component to success, as it unites members of an
organization or group with a common purpose. The creation of a vision, however, is not a simple
process; as Yoeli and Berkovich (2010) noted, The process of formulating a vision is long and
complex and usually begins with the leader s unique personal ethos (p.452). According to Katz (1999),
when formulating a personal ethos, a leader is trying to determine the motivating factor to influence
others, identify the purpose to

Backtracking almost over a century, we now have Ludwig van Beethoven and his magnum opus, Für

The Tensile Of Tensile Test
The tensile test is a standout amongst the most normally utilized tests for assessing materials. The
tensile test is done just by grasping inverse finishes of test thing and applying elastic power with the
machine. This outcomes in continuous stretching and consequent fracture in the test thing. During this
procedure, power expansion information normally are checked and recorded. Malleable test measures
properties like extreme rigidity and most extreme stretching specifically simultaneously, utilizing
these estimations different properties, for example, Young s Modulus, Poisson s proportion and yield
quality can likewise be resolved. At the point when appropriately directed, the pliable test results
power expansion information that can measure a few vital mechanical properties of a material. The
ductile test led for this paper is done in room temperature under the ISO 6892 1 standard.

The Fallen Woman Of 2005
The Fallen Woman of 2005 The Leading Relationship
The 2005 Salzburg Festival saw a new iteration of Verdi s classic La Traviata, that is, on the other
hand, based on Alexandre Dumas s The Lady of the Camellias. We believe that a classic piece s
staging can prove to be either the sowing the seeds of a grand success, or an ungrateful mission, as
most people approach such performances intentionally or unintentionally with ample preconceptions.
As we have learned after some basic research in the field, our current subject is considered to have
lived up to the expectations, becoming the newly set golden standard of said preconceptions.
The premises
Succeeding a series of much criticized music performances, Willi Decker s approach on La Traviata
caused a relative and absolute impact in the opera scene. Although we do not approve wholeheartedly
with the style, better said, lack of scenery and costumes, lacking abundant objects, there are no
distractions from the characters, such as the Russian Anna Netrebko as Violetta Valéry, and Mexican
Rolando Villazón as Alfredo Germont or Thomas Hampton as Girogio, Alfredo s father. Our paper s
current goal is to attempt to assess how the leading performances collided by the intent of the
direction, how well, how credible the singers could perform this, and how the scenery aided the
purpose of the whole.

Analysis Of A Certain Lady By Dorothy Parker
Love, by definition, is an intense feeling of affection, associated with attachment. Love can be very
painful for many people since they end up getting hurt by the person they love. With the power love
possesses, it has been used throughout literature in plays, books, poems, essays, and more. Dorothy
Parker was a writer starting when she was in her twenties. Over the years, she began writing her own
books, which became very popular. She expanded her writing style through her career and became
very well known for how realistic and blunt her writing was. In the poem A Certain Lady, Dorothy
Parker uses symbolism to convey a theme of how damaging love can be. For example, Parker
describes eager lips to show her attraction to him, even though he was causing her pain by not being
faithful. She also describes that her heart is dying over and over every time he tells her of his
excursions with other women. Parker seems regretful by the way she ends her poem, and the
characters are never described individually.
Symbolism is used throughout Parker s poem, creating an unclear connotation. She uses words such as
eager lips to show how intense her emotions are. She feels so very strong for her companion that she
is longing for, that she is hopeful for him to come back to her. Even though she misses him and wants
him to come back from his trips, it is bittersweet for her because he always tells her about what
exactly he has been doing while he was away. Parker also uses symbolism as she writes that her heart
dies over and over, each time her companion explains how he has been with other women. This could
represent that her love is dying for him each time he cheats on her, or that she is so disappointed in
him that she cannot give him her whole heart. Though she seems desperate sometimes throughout the
poem, I believe the female character is a strong woman who may just be intimidated by the man she
loves, or even scared of what might happen if she were to leave.
Parker ends the poem with a regretful, mysterious tone. The last lines of the poem read And what goes
on, my love, while you re away, You ll never know. Ending the poem with the uncertainty of not
knowing what really happens when he is away really allows for

The Cage Of Poverty In Marigolds By Eugenia Collier
The Cage of Poverty In the short story Marigolds , the author, Eugenia Collier, uses several key events
throughout the short story to represent the unseen cage that the main character, Lizabeth, is trapped in,
and ultimately breaks. The story is set in a shanty town, likely taking place during the Great
Depression. Throughout the story, Lizabeth goes through a difficult stage in life, a stage in which she
is in conflict about whether she wants to be a carefree, innocent child, or an educated, compassionate
adult. The climax of the story, when Lizabeth tears and rips up Miss Lottie s marigolds, is such an
emotional moment for Lizabeth that she finally completes her transition to adulthood, understands her
endless cycle of poverty, and breaks the final bar of the cage. The author uses a seemingly endless
cycle of poverty to emphasize the cage in which the characters are trapped. As Lizabeth muses over
her childhood, she recalls the daily cycle of how each morning our mother and father trudged wearily
down the dirt road and around the bend, she to her domestic job, he to his daily unsuccessful quest for
work. (1). Every morning began the same way, passed the same way, and ended the same way.
Lizabeth feels trapped, forced to go through the same series of events for what seems to be the rest of
her life, with the same people, in the same place. When the author pairs this with the dusty setting of
the town and the time placement of the Great Depression, it creates an effect of hopelessness for the
first part of the story. This is only furthered by Lizabeth continually returning to the idea that Poverty
was the cage in which we were all trapped. (1). Lizabeth opens the story by first giving a description
of her hometown as dusty , remembering the poverty and hopelessness. She then continues by
referring to the cage of not having enough money, and the cycle that it put them through, and ends by
alluding to her future being limited to her poverty. As the story progresses, so does Lizabeth. Having
entered a difficult stage of her identity, Lizabeth is unsure of whether to be an innocent, carefree child,
or to be a knowledgeable, aware adult. She begins to sense a change in the coming, and a feeling of

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Literary Analysis
Romanticized stories are those that show an idyllic yet unrealistic view of reality. It s the picturesque
quality of romance that draws the reader in. One example of this is in An Occurence at Owl Creek
Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. In An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge, Bierce increases the impact of the
story s ending by romantically depicting Farquhar s escape and following the romantic portrayal with
a sudden snap back to reality. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge follows a man named Peyton
Farquhar before, during, and after his execution. The ending of the story is told to seem like Farquhar
heroically escapes the execution and makes it back to his loving wife, however, in the last paragraph it
is made clear that the romantically described escape was just what flashed before his eyes during his
death. The romantic depiction of his imagined escape is what makes the ending so powerful. It brings
the reader on a happy journey before harshly turning back to reality. ... Show more content on

An example of these powers is his newfound strength. He watched [his hands] with a new interest as
first one and then the other pounced upon the noose at his neck. They tore it away and thrust it fiercely
aside, its undulations resembling those of a water snake (2). He s able to easily tear away the noose
from his neck while underwater, which normally would be an impossible feat. Along with exceptional
strength, Farquhar also seems to gain immunity to death during his escape. When fired at after
escaping the noose, some of [the bullets] touched him on the face and hands, then fell away,
continuing their descent (2). Instead of killing him, bullets just fall away from him in a romantically
ideal manner. Portraying Farquhar as having superhuman powers is one of many romantic

Why Stalin Built The Iron Curtain Essays
Why Stalin Built The Iron Curtain
The Iron Curtain was the term used in the West to refer to the boundary line, which divided Europe
into to separate areas of political influence. This was set up from the end of World War Two until the
end of the Cold War. During this period, Eastern Europe was under control and influence of the Soviet
Union (USSR,) where as Western Europe enjoyed freedom. It was a border set up by Joseph Stalin,
the ruler of the USSR in the years after the Second World War. The term the Iron Curtain, was first
introduced in Winston Churchill s long speech, an Iron curtain has descended across the continent, on
March 5th, 1946. Churchill s speech triggered Stalin to tighten ... Show more content on

Roosevelt and Stalin had got on well but at Potsdam the new USA leader, President Harry Truman had
adopted a policy of get tough on Stalin and Russia. Disagreements had taken place over a range of
issues. The USSR did not keep its promise about holding free elections in Eastern Europe. The USA
also dropped the atom bomb on Japan without consulting the USSR. Stalin was very irritated that
Truman did not tell the USSR about the atomic bomb until the last minute. This created a belief in the
USSR that the bombs had been dropped as a warning to the Russians.
In 1946, Britain and the USA agreed to unite their zones in Germany for economic purposes. But this
idea was not taken well in the USSR. Not only were the Western allies acting without the agreement
of the Soviet Union, but also they were planning to rebuild Germany, when Stalin wanted to keep it as
weak as possible.
Stalin built the Iron Curtain; it was a thousand mile fence cutting off the communist countries of
Eastern Europe from the non communist West. The most famous example of the Iron Curtain was the
Berlin Wall. However that was not built until 1961. The Iron Curtain became the most important
symbol in the Cold War. Between 945 and 1948, all the countries behind the Iron Curtain were
brought under Soviet control

Civilization s Disappearance
For 700 years, the Indus civilization provided its individuals with wealth, abundance and its own
artisan produced goods of surpassing beauty and quality. But, as suddenly as the civilization emerged,
it disappeared and declined.
Around 1900 BC, signs began to emerge of mounting problems. People started to leave the cities and
those who remained suffered from malnutrition. By around 1800 BC, most of the cities were
uninhabited. In the centuries to come and again, in sharp contrast to its contemporaries, Mesopotamia
and ancient Egypt recollection of the Indus civilization and its achievements seemed to disappear from
the record of human experience. Unlike the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians, the citizens of
Indus Valley built no huge, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A tectonic event may have diverted the system s sources toward the Ganges Plain, though there is
some uncertainty about the date of this event. The region in which the river s waters formerly arose is
acknowledged to be geologically active, and there is evidence of major tectonic events at the time the
Indus civilization collapsed. The river s very existence was unknown until the late 20th century, when
geologists used satellite photographs to trace its former course through the Indus Valley. If the
Ghaggar Hakra river system dried up when the Indus civilization was at its height, the consequences
would have been devastating. The refugees would have flooded the other cities. The critical mass
needed for economic integration would have collapsed. Although this particular factor is speculative,
and not generally accepted, the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization, as with any other civilization,
will have been due to a combination of a variety of catastrophic reasons.
In the declining years, Indus civilization people tried to hang on to their old way of life, but in the end,
they gave up. By 1600 BC, the cities were neglected. In the 19th century, British engineers discovered
that the abundant bricks found in the ruins in which they expressed no evident curiosity provided
excellent raw materials for railway construction. They proceeded to destroy much

Popular Kids vs Unpopular Kids
Popular Kids vs. Unpopular Kids Everyone wants to be the popular kid in high school right? Not
always true because popularity isn t always as great as it looks. Belonging in the popular social group
in high school can be a rough place for some individuals. In other words, the grass isn t always
greener on the other side. While unpopular teens wish to join the other side, they should consider a
few things before making a rash decision. While pondering through the negative effects of being
popular, one that stands out is the type of people one would become involved with. We all desire to

Just imagine the sound of a thousand flies buzzing down the hallway with the latest gossip. In a matter
of one day, one comment could be transformed into a rumor and spread through the whole school like
wild fire. Drama inevitably corrupts most teens but popular teens thrive on it like an addiction, and
sometimes create lies just to ruin one s reputation. True friends, who might not be the most popular
kids in school, but they would also never talk about a friend behind his or her back just to gain a
higher reputation with the popular click (Article one). Staying out of drama can help one feel less
stressed. Avoiding it can also stop individuals from getting involved in something they might regret.
Gossip is difficult to find roaming among the unpopular group because they rarely feel the need to
seek attention or hurt someone s feelings by spreading rumors. They are already content and aware of
how to treat individuals as they would like to be treated. When the weekend hits it is common for the
popular click to go out and party. Everyone hears the stories of how drunk someone got or how the
cops busted a few unfortunate teenagers. Even the best of teens get peer pressured into going to the
weekend party and drinking. All of this obnoxious partying is not appropriate for a 15 to 18 year old
teenager. Those cool parties consist of high school kids that don t know other ways to have fun or just
get drunk to escape their problems. Teens have to step up and

POTTER GETS COLD SHOULDER
Michael O Connor
Omaha World Herald staff writer
The wildly popular Harry Potter books might be casting a spell over adults and children who just can t
seem to get enough of the young wizard in training, but some schools and parents aren t quite so
enchanted.
Some schools in the Omaha area and across the country aren t ready to place the books on their
shelves because of references to witchcraft and sorcery.
Our mission is to raise children up to be Christians and to be strong men and women of Christ, said
Vic Fordyce, an English teacher at Omaha Christian Academy. The books didn t match up with
Christian values.
The school, which has about 350 students in grades K 12, decided against selling the books at its book
fair earlier this month and has no plans to buy them for classrooms or the library, Fordyce said.
We just didn t want to put our stamp of approval on (the books), he said.
The three books by J.K. Rowling, which are at the top of the New York Times best seller list, chart the
course of 11 year old Harry, who learns of his famous wizard family past and is invited to Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The books are an issue at some public, as well as private, schools.
In South Carolina, parents have persuaded the State Board of Education to review whether the books
should be allowed in the classrooms.

Characteristics Of The United Kingdom Judicial System
Introduction
The judicial system of the United Kingdom exists as a complex and intricate system of law that has
been practiced, and adjusted over a thousand years to reach the point as is known in the present. The
complexities of the judicial system presents itself as different variations of the legal system within the
United Kingdom, where although they have their differences, they also share certain similarities
between them. One such similarity is that they all hold certain requirements for Judges which exist as
a centralized idea within the judicial system, as they are not entirely separated between the varying
legal systems of the United Kingdom. The complexities and similarities of the United Kingdom s
judicial system will be explored through their: structure, documentation, categorization, and the
requirements of judges; where all of which will create a clearer picture to better understand how these
elements operate. The paper will be divided into two categories: the Judicial System, and the
Requirements of Judges. First, the judicial system will be explored through it s structure,
documentation, and classification of a legal system; and secondly will move into the certain
requirements that judges have in the United Kingdom. Both elements serve to essentially build a
foundation that explains a clearer picture of how the judicial system of the United Kingdom practices
law, and the expectations those in power hold.

Boy Scouts Accomplishments
One day, adult leaders from a local Boy Scouts troop came to my first grade class recruiting new
Scouts. I remember the Scoutmaster mentioning how much fun and rewarding Scouting can be for a
young man and they also talked about the highest rank in the organization, the Eagle. According to the
Boy Scouts of America headquarters, only four percent of all registered youth who participates in
Scouting earns the Eagle rank. It s one of the most coveted achievement, a Scout can seek and the
most difficult one to attain. As a young boy, I loved animals and my favorite one, the Eagle. I knew
that day; I wanted to join Boy Scouts with hopes and dreams of becoming an Eagle Scout.
The motto of the Cub Scouts is Do your Best and I did. I worked my way through, from Cub Scouts to
Webelos and finally to Boy Scouts, where, I worked through six of my ranks very swiftly to get started
toward my Trail to Eagle. After my new Scout badge, I obtained my Tenderfoot, Second Class and
First Class ranks. Therefore, I began work on my 21 merit badges that are pre requisite toward the
Eagle rank and furthermore, twelve plus community service hours. After I acquired the required merit
badges and finished my volunteering commitment, I received my next two badges, the Star and Life
rank. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Substitution And Elimination Reaction Lab Report
Substitution and Elimination Reactions Substitution reactions replace a functional group with a new
group. These reactions compete with elimination reactions in which a group is eliminated and a π (pi)
bond is formed. Substitution reactions occur when a nucleophile is added to an electrophile/substrate.
Elimination reactions occur when a base is added to an electrophile/substrate. The electrophile must
contain a leaving group to be considered a substrate. Alkyl Halides Alkyl Halides are the common
substrate used in substitution and elimination reactions. Alkyl Halides are halogen containing alkane
compounds. These compounds are commonly used as the electrophile in substitution reactions.
Naming Alkyl Halides is similar to naming alkanes. Halogen substituents are named just like alkane
substituents, for example if there is a chlorine attached to an ethane the chlorine substituent will be
named using the word chloro . The other halogens are named using the words flouro , bromo , and
iodo respectively. These possible substituents are listed alphabetically along with the alkane
substituents. When dealing with alkyl halides it is important to note that the carbons attached to the
halogens and the carbons attached to those carbons are involved in the reaction process, therefore we
designate these carbons with special symbols to differentiate them from the rest of the molecule. The
carbon atom that is bonded to the halogen is designated the α (alpha) carbon. The carbons that are

Life Of African American Slavery
First, African Americans sustained many hardships and had very bad lives as slaves. They were beaten
and not fed, and most starved to death. When or if they died they would be thrown overboard the ship
and fed to the sharks. If they did make it they would be forced to do hard labor without pay and very
little food. They were given poor sleeping conditions. When the slaves were brought from Africa they
were auctioned to the buyers and were split up from their families, and they were treated unfairly.
Secondly, they were whipped and beaten as punishment. The slaves worked on the fertile lands of
North America, where they grew rice, cotton, indigo, and tobacco. On the plantation the slaves cleared
the land, timber, and worked the fields or in

  • 2. Wiseblood Movie Vs Book 2. Wiseblood can be described as hopeful throughout the novel and movie because of Hazel s struggle to wrap his mind around Christianity. In the first scene of the movie version of Wiseblood, Hazel asks the lady sitting across from him on the train whether or not she thinks she has been saved by Jesus. He then launches into his spiel about why she can not be saved and that Jesus never washed everyone s sins away with his blood (Wiseblood). While this may not seem hopeful, it is made clear that Hazel is trying to convince himself that Jesus did not save him from his sins. The fact that Hazel is trying to convince himself that Jesus can not wash sins away is why the book is described as hopeful. His struggle with religion shows that Hazel still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... O Connor chose character names to help show the role religion plays in her novel, Wiseblood. Enoch is based off of Enoch from the Bible. Enoch was the great grandfather of Noah. He walked with God and lived until he was 365 years old. He was very wise and some say that he never died; he just went to Heaven to live with God. In the novel and the movie, Enoch had wiseblood that he inherited from his father (O Connor). The fact that Enoch inherited his wisdom from his father shows that Enoch was based off of Enoch from the Bible who walked with God, The Father. Enoch also did not die at the end of the book, he simply ran away in the gorilla suit, which goes back to the story of Enoch when he went to live in Heaven with God instead of dying. Sabbath was named after the sabbath. Her name did not show her true character though. She turned out to not be innocent at all. In the movie, she tries to be very seductive with her movements when she is around Hazel. She even tells Hazel how she wrote a letter to a columnist for advise about necking (Wiseblood). She symbolizes all of the people who say they are Christians when they are actually just frauds. Then there is Asa Hawks, who is blind. Hawks can be compared to Saul changed into Paul. Saul was an atheist who was blinded by God, he eventually became a Christian and was granted his sight back. Hawks was a preacher that decided he was going to blind himself in front of a crowd with lye (O Connor). However, he did not have the courage to go through with it (O Connor), so he just pretended to be blind. O Connor used her characters to illustrate the role of religion in Haze s ... Reduced Risk of Developing Certain Health Conditions A few years ago, a study of emergency room heart patients in Ontario, Canada, revealed that 7 percent of the patients had been shoveling snow when they first suffered from the symptoms of heart problems. Shoveling, a hand held snow blower can cause unexpected increase in blood pressure as well as heart rate. Another thing is that the freezing, cold air can cause contraction of the blood vessel and reduce the amount of oxygen supply to the heart. This can increase the heart rate leading to a fatal heart attack, especially for the middle aged people with a family history of heart problems. What s more, shoveling over prolonged periods of time may also cause back problems. Therefore, it is a good decision to invest in a commercial snow removal service. 2. The policy suggests students should stray from their daily routine when they feel as if they are in danger. Students are encouraged to travel in groups as being alone increases vulnerability. Through representation, the university does not protect a vulnerable student. • 8. The Qualities And Traits Of Leaders Essay 2 The qualities and traits of leaders A number of leadership traits almost come directly from within. These are the qualities that might be harder to train, but which make leading other people smoother. Committed A good leader has to show commitment. Fulfilling your vision won t happen overnight and you need to be able to convince everyone else that you won t disappear when things get tough. If you make a promise, you need to keep it. You can t just preach about achieving A, B and C, but you need to show that you are actually going to do it. Commitment matters for two reasons. First, when you show commitment you help build trust. The team and anyone involved with the project will be able to trust your word. Trust will keep work morale up and help you achieve objectives faster since people don t need to second guess what your objectives are. But furthermore, the second aspect of commitment is about setting an example. As mentioned throughout the article, leadership is about setting an example and if you show commitment to your word, your subordinates will be inspired to stick to their promises. Using your own example of hard work, you will ensure the people around you feel motivated to do the same thing. Passionate Passion should be at the heart of everything you do. It doesn t matter whether you are a leader of a multibillion company or a lumberjack, without passion, you won t achieve success. You can understand its importance when you view it as the fuel to your truck. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Vision Vision, whether linked to an institution, business, or individual, provides purpose and is critical to success. As argued by McFarland, Senn, and Childress (1994), Vision is to an organization what purpose is to an individual. Any individual who has strong life purpose is naturally motivated and moved to action. A vision for an organization has the same power, serving as a higher purpose (p.94). Establishing a clear vision brings a sense of unity and inspiration, whereby members of the team gain a sense of self motivation to follow in the same direction (McFarland, et.al.). Ownership of a vision does not rest solely on the leader; in contrast, uniting members of an organization and enabling them to share in the purpose are critical. Visionary leaders have the compassion and commitment to a cause that inspire those around them to believe in what they are doing. Visionary Leadership: Personal to Organizational Commitment Vision is a critical component to success, as it unites members of an organization or group with a common purpose. The creation of a vision, however, is not a simple process; as Yoeli and Berkovich (2010) noted, The process of formulating a vision is long and complex and usually begins with the leader s unique personal ethos (p.452). We believe that a classic piece s staging can prove to be either the sowing the seeds of a grand success, or an ungrateful mission, as most people approach such performances intentionally or unintentionally with ample preconceptions. As we have learned after some basic research in the field, our current subject is considered to have lived up to the expectations, becoming the newly set golden standard of said preconceptions. The premises Succeeding a series of much criticized music performances, Willi Decker s approach on La Traviata caused a relative and absolute impact in the opera scene. Although we do not approve wholeheartedly with the style, better said, lack of scenery and costumes, lacking abundant objects, there are no distractions from the characters, such as the Russian Anna Netrebko as Violetta Valéry, and Mexican Rolando Villazón as Alfredo Germont or Thomas Hampton as Girogio, Alfredo s father. Our paper s current goal is to attempt to assess how the leading performances collided by the intent of the direction, how well, how credible the singers could perform this, and how the scenery aided the purpose of the whole. Where are the customs? Had this been a classic national opera of Erkel, like Bánk bán or Hunyadi László, the lack of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Analysis Of A Certain Lady By Dorothy Parker Love, by definition, is an intense feeling of affection, associated with attachment. Love can be very painful for many people since they end up getting hurt by the person they love. With the power love possesses, it has been used throughout literature in plays, books, poems, essays, and more. Dorothy Parker was a writer starting when she was in her twenties. Over the years, she began writing her own books, which became very popular. She expanded her writing style through her career and became very well known for how realistic and blunt her writing was. In the poem A Certain Lady, Dorothy Parker uses symbolism to convey a theme of how damaging love can be. For example, Parker describes eager lips to show her attraction to him, even though he was causing her pain by not being faithful. She also describes that her heart is dying over and over every time he tells her of his excursions with other women. Parker seems regretful by the way she ends her poem, and the characters are never described individually. Symbolism is used throughout Parker s poem, creating an unclear connotation. She uses words such as eager lips to show how intense her emotions are. She feels so very strong for her companion that she is longing for, that she is hopeful for him to come back to her. Even though she misses him and wants him to come back from his trips, it is bittersweet for her because he always tells her about what exactly he has been doing while he was away. Parker also uses symbolism as she writes that her heart dies over and over, each time her companion explains how he has been with other women. This could represent that her love is dying for him each time he cheats on her, or that she is so disappointed in him that she cannot give him her whole heart. Though she seems desperate sometimes throughout the poem, I believe the female character is a strong woman who may just be intimidated by the man she loves, or even scared of what might happen if she were to leave. Parker ends the poem with a regretful, mysterious tone. The last lines of the poem read And what goes on, my love, while you re away, You ll never know. Ending the poem with the uncertainty of not knowing what really happens when he is away really allows for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. The Cage Of Poverty In Marigolds By Eugenia Collier The Cage of Poverty In the short story Marigolds , the author, Eugenia Collier, uses several key events throughout the short story to represent the unseen cage that the main character, Lizabeth, is trapped in, and ultimately breaks. The story is set in a shanty town, likely taking place during the Great Depression. Throughout the story, Lizabeth goes through a difficult stage in life, a stage in which she is in conflict about whether she wants to be a carefree, innocent child, or an educated, compassionate adult. The climax of the story, when Lizabeth tears and rips up Miss Lottie s marigolds, is such an emotional moment for Lizabeth that she finally completes her transition to adulthood, understands her endless cycle of poverty, and breaks the final bar of the cage. The author uses a seemingly endless cycle of poverty to emphasize the cage in which the characters are trapped. As Lizabeth muses over her childhood, she recalls the daily cycle of how each morning our mother and father trudged wearily down the dirt road and around the bend, she to her domestic job, he to his daily unsuccessful quest for work. (1). Every morning began the same way, passed the same way, and ended the same way. Lizabeth feels trapped, forced to go through the same series of events for what seems to be the rest of her life, with the same people, in the same place. When the author pairs this with the dusty setting of the town and the time placement of the Great Depression, it creates an effect of hopelessness for the first part of the story. This is only furthered by Lizabeth continually returning to the idea that Poverty was the cage in which we were all trapped. (1). Lizabeth opens the story by first giving a description of her hometown as dusty , remembering the poverty and hopelessness. She then continues by referring to the cage of not having enough money, and the cycle that it put them through, and ends by alluding to her future being limited to her poverty. As the story progresses, so does Lizabeth. Having entered a difficult stage of her identity, Lizabeth is unsure of whether to be an innocent, carefree child, or to be a knowledgeable, aware adult. She begins to sense a change in the coming, and a feeling of end ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Literary Analysis Romanticized stories are those that show an idyllic yet unrealistic view of reality. It s the picturesque quality of romance that draws the reader in. One example of this is in An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. In An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge, Bierce increases the impact of the story s ending by romantically depicting Farquhar s escape and following the romantic portrayal with a sudden snap back to reality. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge follows a man named Peyton Farquhar before, during, and after his execution. The ending of the story is told to seem like Farquhar heroically escapes the execution and makes it back to his loving wife, however, in the last paragraph it is made clear that the romantically described escape was just what flashed before his eyes during his death. The romantic depiction of his imagined escape is what makes the ending so powerful. It brings the reader on a happy journey before harshly turning back to reality. ... The river s very existence was unknown until the late 20th century, when geologists used satellite photographs to trace its former course through the Indus Valley. • 32. Substitution And Elimination Reaction Lab Report Substitution and Elimination Reactions Substitution reactions replace a functional group with a new group. These reactions compete with elimination reactions in which a group is eliminated and a π (pi) bond is formed. Substitution reactions occur when a nucleophile is added to an electrophile/substrate. Elimination reactions occur when a base is added to an electrophile/substrate. The electrophile must contain a leaving group to be considered a substrate. Alkyl Halides Alkyl Halides are the common substrate used in substitution and elimination reactions. Alkyl Halides are halogen containing alkane compounds. These compounds are commonly used as the electrophile in substitution reactions. Naming Alkyl Halides is similar to naming alkanes. Halogen substituents are named just like alkane substituents, for example if there is a chlorine attached to an ethane the chlorine substituent will be named using the word chloro . The other halogens are named using the words flouro , bromo , and iodo respectively. These possible substituents are listed alphabetically along with the alkane substituents. When dealing with alkyl halides it is important to note that the carbons attached to the halogens and the carbons attached to those carbons are involved in the reaction process, therefore we designate these carbons with special symbols to differentiate them from the rest of the molecule. The carbon atom that is bonded to the halogen is designated the α (alpha) carbon. The carbons that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
