● Loudermilk is about a recovery group
● What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
● One Day at A Time netflix original was pretty good :)
● A lot of people disliked 13 Reasons Whyy
● Atypical on Netflix
● Girl Interrupted
● She-Ra showed different emotions!
● Inside Out
● Lilo and Stitch’s handling of coping from loss was a
big impact on me
● Jacob’s Ladder (19988) Vietnam vet experiences

Characters with
mental illness are
portrayed as…
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Usually emotional or unstable
● Anti-social
● Overwhelmed
● Lost
● Reactive
● Shamed
● Dangerous
● Burden
● Awkward
● I like how they portrayed mental illness as something
normal in the Hispanic community in One Day At a
Time, like Elena had panic attacks and she found out
her mom had them too

MH ACROSS CULTURES
How have you experienced the concept of "mental
health" within your own cultural communities?
● Just get over it
● You’re fine
● Hiding it, it doesn’t exist is what they told me
● It’s not that big of a deal
● Man up
● The person is at fault
● In Latino culture, you are depicted as weak or crazy
● I agree with the “man up”, I’m Mexican and growing up
I never saw my dad cry because it wasn’t manly
● It feels selfish to be concerned or bring up your own
mental health
● People don’t know how to handle someone when
they’re having a panic attack or something

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Unpleasant, hurtful
● It feels like a lot of pressure
● Exhausting
● Shameful
● Isolating
● Dismissive
● Women are portrayed as emotional
beings so you never wanna talk about
your feelings
● Disappointing
● Frustrating
● I agree with all the answers

What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Embarrassment
● You don’t want to be a burden
● You need to pray harder, you don’t have enough faith
● You feel like you can overcome itand don’t want to bother others
● Don’t know where to go to get help
● People don’t understand
● I was shamed for asking for help so it’s difficult to ask again when I feel
down
● Someone’s experience might convince them they can’t trust anybody
● Blamed
● Some resources are too expensive
● Self hate
● Or having a lot of siblings you don’t want to feel like the troubled one
● Long wait to see a mental health therapist
● I saw help for a long time, then realized after leaving that help source
that I didn’t grow the tools I needed. That was discouraging.
● Hard to find someone with shared experiences to relate to
● Or you do feel like the troubled one and don’t want to cause more worry
for others

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● The [scene with the son in the mask standing
behind the father] stood out to me too
● Anger, I have a little brother and it’s so true
about machismo
● Impact of generational trauma
● Sos many people do not see the roots of
violence that lie within family symptoms
● It reminds me of the bad things people go
through. You never know what someone is
going through.
● The last time I saw spoken word in a film was
Blindspotting (2018)

What are some practices
that help support
your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Talking to my friends who have gone through the same things as I
did so I can hear their thoughts
● That support network is so important and growing our own tools.
Not every tool is going to work everytime, it’s important to be open
and try different things.
● I get a lot of anxiety, so brainstorming with my mom can help me
see things more clearly.
● If I’m feeling a strong negative emotion, I try to “sit with it” and ask
questions about it, while trying to remain objective
● Yes talking. Or listening to stories, someone else talking to me. It
helps because I don’t like going into detail about what I’m going
through.
● Rewarding myself with simple treats such as styling my hair,
massaging my hands, eating my favorite dessert.
● So many great tools, everyone, thank you for sharing these gifts

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● I felt it in my chest. I always feels emotions in my chest.
● This hit home, I used to cut and was very depressed bc I was
confused by my sexuality and growing up in the church I was
taught being part of lgbtq+ was wrong so I felt like I deserved
to feel pain
● It hit me hard in my chest as I knew someone very close to me
who used to cut and it was very sad and upsetting
● Hearing about this project made me feel hopeful. The art was
very powerful, and his message “It felt like something I had to
do” felt so powerful
● Reminded me of people in my life that have experienced
similar pain. The razor blade piece was powerful.
● It made me think of people who might have self-harmed
before. The times I cut. And the repetitive thoughts I have
about self-harm.

How can we support
ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● By talking to people you’re close with. I have a
cousin who shuts herself out when going through
something, so I left her know I’m here no matter
what.
● Try to find the balance of over and under reacting
● For helping others, I think something important is
seek to understand others
● Holding space and listening to people
● Normalize asking for help or pursuing treatment
● Yup checking in with others. I have helped several
people that I consider close to me, friends I should
say, through the tough periods in their life. And
vice versa.
● Listening with no judgement or need to solve the
other person’s problems.
● This has all been great advice
