When I first enrolled in this class, I never thought I would get anything out of it besides the
knowledge, which I found to be completely interesting. But now I can honestly say that this is
probably one of the most useful classes I could have possibly taken in college. We live in times where
people are very exclusive and frightened of what they do not know. It is in times like this when those
who possess knowledge must do everything in their power to be as inclusive and accepting as
possible. This class also showed me that we cannot categorize things as normal or not. Instead, we
should look through the beholder eyes and try to empathize in full measure.
To start, one article that really changed my perspective was the Nacirema one. When I first read it, I

across in an exaggerated way, it really made me realize how unaware people can look when judging

have become the most significant threat in international politics, causing vast concern of the

Chemical, nuclear, and biological weapons not only possess the ability to end the life of many but also
pose negative effects on the environment and global economy. While their ability to wipe out a mass
of civilians causes terror throughout the world, the major concern in regards to WMD is the possibility
of their landing in the hands of treacherous terrorist groups. This fear expanded in 2001 after the

biological weapons acquire the ability to terrorize a civilization, nuclear weapons pose the deadliest

My Best Abilities The Beginning Of Coltrane s Alabama ...
You can see in the image above where I aligned to my best abilities the beginning of Coltrane s
Alabama with King s speech. Hearing a recording of the two overlapping is much more obvious but
you can still see how some of the words can fit into the rhythms Coltrane played. I personally believe
Coltrane did this on purpose. Of course, we have no way of know but there are some points in the
speech and music where it lines up so well that it s unmistakable. There are also parts that do not mix
well together, some of which you can see above but maybe Coltrane did that on purpose as well, to
add his own take on King s speech. Maybe even say some more things that King didn t say that
Coltrane wanted him to say. Coltrane s use of his playing abilities makes this piece speak volumes.
The beginning of this piece is essentially a lament. You can feel the sorrow and grief of the friends and
family involved in this tragedy pour out of Coltrane s sound. Coltrane never considered himself to be
a political activist. He was a musician first, but he was also a deeply religious person. Maybe it was
his beliefs that drew him towards the civil rights movement. Coltrane played eight benefit concerts to
support Martin Luther King Jr. in 1964 and recorded multiple tracks to help inspired the struggle. Art

One time I was on a bus to Beverly Hill, and I was talking to a friend on phone in Chinese. Two
teenage girls at the back of the bus were imitating my pronunciation and laughing so hard, and I heard
them addressing me as chink. I was trying to wrap my head around, because I did not understand why

One of our most, and many would argue, the most valuable rights as citizens of a democracy is our
right to vote. It gives us a voice in the direction our elected representatives steer our country.
Unfortunately, historically young voters are underrepresented due to their low voting turnout. This
came as a shock to me being a young voter myself. Growing up in California I was excited about
getting the chance to vote, to have a voice as it were. However, this is clearly not the case for all
potential young voters.

Political Polarization There s a great deal of debate on whether the issue of increased political
polarization of our elected representatives has had a positive or negative effect on voter turnout, there
s however little debate on whether the political process has become more polarized. While this is an
issue for voter turnout of all ages, I m in a unique position to speak on it as a young voter. As I
mentioned earlier growing up I was excited at the chance to help shape public policy with my vote.
However, as the years went on the increasingly polarized atmosphere of my representatives has had a
draining effect on me. I don t tune in to the TV broadcasts or read the newspaper with the same gusto
anymore. The constant name calling and gridlock has had a profoundly negative effect on my
enthusiasm to partake civic activity. Being a young voter I have dwelt on this quite a bit, and come to
