The Portobellos are a band from Chelsea and Kensington consisting of four members aged 20-23 who met in secondary school and formed a band. They were inspired to take the name "The Portobellos" from Portobello Road, known for its markets. They gained popularity performing locally and supporting Mumford and Sons before signing with Drowned in Sound records. They are currently working on their debut album to be released near Christmas.

3. BACKGROUND
• The were all born in the Royal Borough of Chelsea and
Kensington and formed the band when they met in
secondary school. All four were enrolled in Music and started
making music for a project. Forming a friendship, they
decided to produce their own songs under the name „The
Portobellos‟. The name was inspired by a road they used to
loiter around, Portobello Road, famous for its colorful
atmosphere and frequent markets.
• Trying to establish a name and get their music heard, they
performed at nearby cafes and organized free gigs.
• Down to people tweeting and using Facebook to upload the
videos of the gigs, they were noticed by Mumford and Sons,
who asked them to be a supporting act for their tour.
• Being fans of Mumford and Sons, The Portobellos agreed and
grew further in popularity.

• With this success they were on a mission to get a
record label.
• They pitched their song „The Good and the Bad‟ to
independent record labels. They pitched to
Drowned in Sound because they felt their music
would be different to the music produced by artists
that are currently under the record label.
• Successfully gaining a record label with Drowned in
Sound in 2011, they wanted them to produce an
album with their debut single being „The Good and
the Bad‟.

• They are currently in the process of producing their
album, with is due to be released near Christmas
time. The release date‟s placement near Christmas
was intentional by the record label because they
wanted the band to establish a name in the pop
market.
• This also opens up opportunities for gifts- the price
elasticity of demand is inelastic due to seasonality
