A Rake s Progress Essay
William Hogarth is a name well known from the 18th century as one of the best artists for his work A
Rake s Progress. Despite his background that emerged from unsuccessful parents he did not follow
that trend for he used his thoughts about society to create works of life sized paintings that became so
popular that he pushed for the Copyright Act of 1735 ( National Gallery Website ). Hogarth created A
Rake s Progress in 1733 that contains the main character, Tom Rakewell, within the borders of Britain
and Bedlam, London to reflect the madness of the 18th century. The painting has more than just
brilliant craftsmanship but a story behind it that is hidden, but once revealed, obvious. A Rake s
Progress tells a story of the life of Tom Rakewell. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A Rake s Progress shows a number of different types of people implicated. For example, Tom was on
his way to the Queen s birthday party when he was stopped by bailiffs and therefore his lifestyle is
actually being encouraged and supported by aristocrats. In A Rake s Progress, everyone from the
Queen to the priest that performs his marriage of convenience, to common prostitutes, are part of the
problem. But it is not just Hogarth s take no prisoners approach to social commentary that made him so
popular. Printed satire was actually already very common place and central London was full of
bookshops and print sellers that displayed this kind of work. What Hogarth did do was to tell a story
through pictures. In fact, Hogarth s series were adapted into plays and pantomimes during his lifetime.
His visual drama offered his audience a new way to enjoy satire. The title A Rake s Progress was
referencing John Bunyan s The Pilgrims Progress. Hogarth successfully borrows from popular culture
in order to express complicated ideas through an enjoyable and totally accessible story. Hogarth did
this so well, he is celebrated to this day. Today is can be viewed in the Sir John s museum for Hogarth

Estella As An Extension Of Miss Havisham
In the novel Great Expectations, the theme of relentless love is constantly recurring. Pip s single
minded affection for Estella initially grasps him when he lays his eyes upon her at Miss. Havisham s
Satis House. Although Estella is captivating in Pip s eyes, she has an underlying temperament of being
ignorant and vulgar that remains constant throughout the novel. Anything else I think she is very
pretty Anything else I think she is very insulting (Dickens 62). Although Pip finds Estella alluring, and
one day hopes to marry her, he is frequently baffled by her attitude. Estella s mental state can be
viewed as an extension of Miss Havisham, as she was brought up in Satis House. Pip must,
additionally, cope with Estella s ridiculing

1. TOPIC: Lymphatic Systems Assists in Fluid Circulation
A. How are lymph capillaries structurally and functionally SIMILAR to blood capillaries?
ANSWER: The structures between the two are similar in a way that they look like a web or roots, and
they both function to collect and return blood to the heart from the blood cycle (1 p. 399).
B. How are lymph vessels structurally and functionally SIMILAR to veins which carry blood.
ANSWER: The lymph vessels and the veins both have valves that are one way, and allow the blood to
return to the heart. The valves looks like gateways for the blood flow (1 p. 372 and 399).

ANSWER: The cell composition of blood composed of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets where
all except the WBCs perform their functions within the blood only which involves transport and
coagulation for platelets. While the interstitial fluid like water within the spaces between cells. Lymph
is just like leaked blood that is collected by the lymphatic system but cleansed of any foreign or waste
materials because of lymph nodes (6, 5, 1 p. 400 ).
3. TOPIC: Lymph Vessels
A. Compare and contrast afferent and efferent lymphatic vessels. Describe in one way in which they
are similar and one way they are different.
ANSWER: The afferent lymphatic vessels are one way vessels where lymph can access the lymph
node while efferent lymphatic vessels are where the lymph can exit the lymph node, however because
of the numbers of efferent vessels than afferent vessels; there is some traffic within the node. They are
similar in a way like they have valves to prevent backflow like one way road or a when you drive
through a car wash (1 p. 402).
B. Given that lymph vessels carry under very low pressure, they require assistance in moving lymph,
especially vessels below the level of the heart which must move lymph upwards against gravity. The 2

Brazil s Polonoreste Development Essay
One of the projects that the World Bank helped finance that created problems for the nation that
received assistance was Brazil s Polonoreste development program. The Polonoreste development
program was to build and improve the roads and highways through the rainforest. The goal of this was
to make the transport of cassiterite, used in the production of tin, easier and to open up the western
part of Brazil for development and population. The negative outcomes were the rampant destruction of
rainforest to slash and burn agriculture and the disturbance and destruction of the indigenous people s
territory and way of life.

combined with the complete lack of enforcement of any of the limits, massive lack of preparation for
issues like inflation, legal disputes on land claims, and the influx of loggers and miners along with
farmers, created a veritable madhouse that resulted in the displacement of the native population and
rampant destruction of the forest.
The World Bank should have refused to take one step until they were confident the Brazilian
government could handle the responsibilities the agreement required, not to mention put appropriate
level of planning into it to even consider half of the massive issues that could have come up, not just
assuming everything would work out fine. The Bank was more concerned with being part of
conquering the last untamed frontier than insuring its success. Given this example, I doubt
international financial institutions such as this could consistently provide responsible

The Minerals and Chemicals within Glass
Majority of glass used in our daily glass from jars, bottles, drinking glass and even windows are called
soda lime glass since it uses soda ashes in its production. Glass in general is mainly made out of sand.
In fact, sand alone can be fused to produce glass but it requires a high temperature which is estimated
about 1700°C for the sand to completely melt. However, to mass produce glass, other chemical and
mineral are added to lower the melting temperature to ease the production.
Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3) also known as soda ash is mixed with sand to produce a product of 75%
silica (SiO2) and 25% sodium oxide (Na2O). This mixture will melt and fuse at a much lower
temperature of 800°C. Unfortunately, the glass produced with this composition is water soluble which
is also known as water glass. This is not suitable for glass bottle since it need to contain water so, to
stabilise the glass, other chemical substance is mixed into the composition such as calcium oxide
(CaO) and magnesium oxide (MgO). The chemical mixtures are obtained by the addition of lime stone
which produce a pure and inert glass.
The glass produced is originally colourless and transparent. Addition of different chemicals into the
production of the glass results in different colour like green blue or brown. Most of glass bottle
produced have similar composition of chemicals as their ingredients. The composition of chemicals
are 70% 74% SiO2 (silica) 12% 16% Na2O (sodium oxide) 5% 11% CaO (calcium oxide)

The most probable cause of the caries development is the increased acidity within the oral cavity,
sugary foods and lack of proper attention to oral health. Dental caries is evident clinically through

According to research, caries is a common condition that women face when they get to the
reproductive age (Gaffar et al, 2016). Women experience higher risks due to the changes that they
undergo during pregnancy. It is a common assumption that when women are pregnant, they develop
craving for sugary foods and drinks. The examination reveals that Jenny likes eating chocolates and
biscuits, which in combination of her neglect of brushing her teeth, mark Jenny a high risk patient for
developing dental caries. In additional to the clinical finding of caries activity, it is important to
incorporate radiography into the diagnostic process of dental caries. (Serman, 2003) Radiographs are
often essential for the early detection of interproximal caries and determination of the disease

In 2001 there was a movie released called Black Hawk Down. This movie was based on a true story of
the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. This battle takes place in Somalia. The movie depicts this battle
pretty accurately from who died and the mistake that were made in the mission plan. The operation
was supposed to be easy and go smoothly but like most plans things didn t go as they planned. If there
wasn t any mistakes made during this operation then there wouldn t have been a movie made after it.

the pilot Michael Durant was captured by the mob and taken prisoner. He was later released after the
battle. There were a few armies in on this battle. On the UN side there was United States, Pakistan,
and Malaysia. On the Somalia side there was al Qaeda. The strength of the UN over powered the
Somalian power because the UN had 8 Black Hawk helicopters and 8 Little Bird helicopters. They
also had 12 vehicles to use. Now Somalia outnumbered the UN forces. Somalia had 4,000 6,000
soldiers and the UN had about 160 soldiers from various elite units. There was much causality in this
battle. The U.S. had 18 killed, 73 wounded, and 1 captured. Malaysia had 1 killed and 7 wounded.
Pakistan had 1 killed and 2 wounded. Now the SNA militia states it only had a range of 315 to 500

Chronic Pain Vs Acute Pain
No the brain does not perceive acute and chronic pain differently. The perception of pain is subjective
to each individual person based on his or her own mood, emotional state, and prior experience. A
functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) shows that there is no difference between someone
with chronic pain compared to a person with an acute pain. The fMRI shows that pain perception and
related brain stimulation patterns were virtually undistinguishable between chronic and acute pain.

Essay about Arguments for Open Adoption Records
For those who are a part of the adoption world one of the most hotly debated issues is whether birth
records should be open or closed to adoptees. With this issue comes strong feelings on both sides. In
most states adoption records are fully sealed and inaccessible, unless the adoptee petitions the court. In
16 states these records are fully or partially available upon request with no court involvement, and also
may depend upon when you were born. In a few states records are completely prohibited and the
adoptee will never have any access to them. Alaska and Kansas have always made original birth
records available.

Adoption in America been ruled by a stigma. For much too long, those who could not have children,
unwed mothers, and the children born out of wedlock have been shamed and humiliated. I believe it is
time for these supposedly disgraceful ideas to go by the wayside, and we begin hold onto the idea that
all families are beautiful things, no matter how they are composed or how they came about. There is
no shame in being an infertile couple, an unwed mother, or a child with unwed parents.
Two facets comprise this issue: the social and the legal. Proposed social impacts of open records are
the increase or decrease of abortions and adoptions, birth parents right to privacy, the forcing of
unwanted relationships with adoptee children, and the undermining of the integrity of the adoptive
family. Proposed legal impacts of open records are the violation of privacy to the family, right of
reproductive privacy, and a birth a mother s equal rights with a father s (because of more birth mother
s names being provided in comparison to father s names).
Those in opposition to open records say that it will increase abortions and decrease adoption because
abortion is confidential and adoption is not. However, it has been determined that this is not the case.
In fact, there is a strong correlation between open records, decreased abortions and increased
adoptions. It appears, that in states that opened adoption records

The Crisis Of The Soviet Union
This paper is attempting to look at the deeper financial and policy issues in which the country Ukraine
faced during their financial crisis in 2008 09. The Ukraine faced a lot of economical and political
challenges in recent years, in which their economy has plummeted drastically. Economic
measurements such as GDP, unemployment, and average household incomes all were impacted in a
negative way. Other factors, such as the Russian gas line, forced Ukrainian businesses to cut back on
costs, further hindering their overall economy. Doing research, we have strong findings that prove
how much the economy has fallen compared to earlier years. 1. Introduction After collapse of the

2. Russian Gas Line The reason why the crisis started, however, was how the Ukraine economy was
set up in the first place. Their economy was heavily tied with their politics. Focusing on more so what
happened in the country rather than why it happened leads us to see that Russia recently cut off the gas
line between the two countries. (BBC, 2014) This was an important resource, not only for the
Ukrainian people, but also for many Ukrainian businesses. Ukraine s economy relies heavily on
Shipbuilding, steel and arms. However, because many industries are so energy inefficient, they are
highly dependent on imports of Russian gas, which have been heavily subsidized. (BBC, 2014) When
Russia cut off the gas line, Ukrainian businesses were hurt and forced to cut costs in order to make a
profit. Many of their businesses ended up firing workers so their businesses were able move back to
their individual equilibrium. Because this happened, Ukraine s unemployment rate increased
dramatically along with a decrease in real wages for employees. (BBC, 2014) Traditionally, Ukraine
has had a close economic relationship with Russia, with the two former Soviet republics having a

The Human Nature Of Consciousness Essay
Of all the objects in the universe, the human brain is the most complex. There are as many neurons in
the brain as there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy. , a quote from an issue of a Discover magazine
article. But what comes from this complexion? The answer is thought. Consciousness has been
quarreled between writers, scientists, priests, atheists and everyone in between. The priest says it is
divine and cannot be explained, the atheist says no it s evolution. The writer romanticizes it, creating
characters that contain the free will of the author but have more unrealistic complexion than any real
human character. Scientists explain that we are in a state of awareness and that consciousness cannot
be entirely explained as it is subjective and objectively, it cannot be measured. Human existence has
transcended from being a simple organism living with survival instincts: hunting and gathering food
for our kin, to working boring jobs to feed the family and to have just enough leisurely time to assure
yourself not to jump off the nearest building to end it all. The question is can an organism become
complex enough to consciously choose what they believe is morally right with free will. Do we live
for others or ourselves? Does consciousness actually exist and how do we prove it?
For many, memory is the proof of consciousness, as well as being proof of life. History, being
observed as it s definition, is ultimate proof that humans can think, are thinking, and will think,

Historical Analogy of the First and Second Continental...
HISTORICAL ANALOGY OF THE FIRST AND SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS
Introduction CONTINENTAL CONGRESS, 1ST (1774) AND 2ND (1775 1781). The political state of
affairs in Massachusetts produced by the English Coercive Acts, that had been approved in reaction to
the Boston Tea Party, riled up such radical New York patriot leaders as Alexander McDougall and
Isaac Sears and to suggest the assembly of a general colonial congress to the Boston Committee of
Correspondence. The Massachusetts General Assembly recommended in June 1774 that a broad
congress be convened in Philadelphia to talk about relations among Parliament and the American
colonies. The first Continental Congress took place in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774, with every
one of the colonies with the exception of Georgia represented. In the whole span of American history,
there has in no way been, a more inspiring congregation of luminous statesmen. One of the most
significant features of the first Continental Congress was that New England and southern patriot
leaders revealed that they may possibly work with each another in the quest for universal objectives.
During the first Continental Congress, representatives measured four chief items of business.
Representatives of the Massachusetts General Assembly, convening in Suffolk County, Massachusetts,
accepted a string of resolutions announcing the Coercive Acts in opposition to the British
Constitution; suggestive of arrangement of a new government in Massachusetts with

Human Struggle In The Tokyo Story
In Ozu s film, the Tokyo Story, has many scenes that define the human struggle, such as the struggle to
make a living, aging and death of loved ones, and the way children eventually fall apart from their
parents when they get older. The one human struggle from Ozu s film that influenced the most
empathy is the inevitable truth of life that the struggle for survival in society eventually drifts
individuals apart such as parents and they re children when they begin to live independently and
become to take care for only themselves because of their daily busy lives.
From this film, Ozu introduces a few scenes to compare the similarities of different generations in the
relationship between children and parents. The first scene that begins this comparison is when Koichi
s son, Minoru, had high hopes of going sightseeing with his parents and grandparents, but when
suddenly Koichi had to go see his sick patient and the plans got cancelled, Minoru was very
disappointed and angry with his parents because he mentions that they always say they will go next
time, but they never seem to keep their words. Ozu includes this scene to show how often parents
never seem to keep their promises with their children because they re constantly busy with their own
things and not have enough free time to spend time with them. It s just like in reality where parents
that struggle financially tend to spend more time at work than at home, thus they never seem to have
the time or use their precious time to take their children out because it always involves money. We can
understand from both sides of perspective, as the parent and as the child. Many of us as a child have
surely experienced the samething atleast one time in our life when our parents never kept they re
words and seemed too busy to play with us. If it were from a wealthy family the parents wouldn t have
to worry about spending they re money and consume most of their time at work. They would most
likely go out more often with their children and take them to places like Disneyland or Legoland such
as most families today. When Ozu included the scene when right before they were ready to go out for
sightseeing and the patient comes in to see Koichi, shows us that this family is

Similarities Between Underground And Notes From The...
As I read Notes from the underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and watched the film Rashomon
directed by Akira Kurosawa I noticed a few similarities and differences between the two. They were
similar because they both are frame narratives, the narrator is unreliable, there were parts in first
person or was written in first person and they both had analepsis. The main differences were the
themes. The themes were very different in both stories.
What is the theme in literature? A theme in literature is the main topic or topics of a story. As I read
through the required text and watch the film I chose egoism and individual versus society for Notes
from the Underground and multiplicity for Rashomon .
A frame narrative is basically a story within a story. In Notes from the Underground the whole story is
basically a bunch of stories that the narrator tells about his life. The narrator talks about his past and
this is where analepsis comes in which is a flashback to a different time. For example the narrator lets
us know at the beginning he is forty then later on he goes on to talk about what happens when he was
twenty four. The narrator also is unreliable because the story is told in an irrational way. The film
Rashomon also has a bunch of stories within the film. As each person tells their side, it s almost like
mini stories. And as with Notes from the Underground the stories go back as analepsis. They flashback
to the time when they happened to describe what actually happens. This film is described as an
unreliable narrative because each story that was told was different, which makes you wonder what
really happened.
When I finished watching Rashomon I immediately said the theme is multiplicity. Every person that
saw what happened had their own view of what happened. There was no story that was the exact say
as the other. But that there says people will do anything to make a story sound good. Each
interpretation of how everything went made someone look like someone else was to blame. There is a
saying there is more than one side of a story and this film proves that. The bandit that has a reputation
for killing and lust tied the samurai and kissed his wife. The woodcutter found the man s dead body of

With this type of substratum, it favours idyllic conditions for various types of vegetation to inhabit and
create the optimum conditions for roach due to them being both herbivorous and detritivorous feeders
(Weatherley, 1987; Brabrand, 1985). Looking at figure 8 this is demonstrated as the Trews weir shows
that roach have the fastest growth rate and also attain the largest size than any other site with they are
found. From looking at Figure 9 and 10 it is evident that roach find this type of area far more
beneficial then dace as roach are in higher abundances at this site. According to a study that had
previously taken place by Cowx, 1989 said that dace and roach sampled from the Trews Weir had a
significant dietary over lap in this area; figures 9 and 10 also show this.
Data for Trews Weir clearly implies that dace in this area do not have usual food available in this area
compared to others along the river so it is essential to look for other food items to populate this region.
This explains why they do not have a growth rate that is in line with the other sampling site (figure 9).
The River Creedy s gradient slope is 1.9% which indicates that the flow rate is at a medium rate. This
river also has a high nutrient level as there are runoffs from farm land and with the flow rates not as

Hiroshima and Nagasaki the untold story Essay example
Hiroshima and Nagasaki the untold story On August 6th 1945, the first Atomic Bomb, Little Boy, was
dropped on Hiroshima, and three days later on August 9th 1945, the second atomic bomb, Fat Man,
was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan s industrial capital. The decision to use the Atomic Bomb against
Japan was a poor one considering the damage, the devastation, and the amount of people left dead,
injured, or suffering the loss of a family member or a friend, all for the sake of quickly ending the
ongoing War. When the Japanese had realized that they were the only ones left in the war, Germany
their ally, was already beaten out of the war and all efforts were now concentrated at them, the
Japanese began suing for a peaceful end to the war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The retention of the Emperor was crucial to the surrender, as the Japanese believed their Emperor was
a god, the heart of the people and the culture (Long). This Japanese belief is a part of a tradition that
dates back to 660 B.C. when the first Japanese Emperor, Jimmu, who according to legend was a
descendant of the sun god, Amaterasu. So there fore, according to the tradition, the emperor during
this time, Hirohito, was said to be a divine being. It is for this reason that the Japanese sued for peace
based on the Atlantic Charter of 1941 that was drafted up by Roosevelt and Churchill on August 4th,
1941. According to the Atlantic Charter, every nation could choose its own form of government, thus,
if Japan were to surrender based on these terms, they would be able to retain the emperor, their God
(Alperovitz). However, when the United States offered a peace agreement based on Unconditional
Surrender, the Japanese refused this offer as no provisions had been made for their Emperor. As Leon
V. Sigal states,
...one point was clear to senior [United States] officials, regardless of where they stood on war
termination... the critical condition for Japanese surrender was the assurance that the throne would be
preserved
(Alperovitz 31).
It turns out that the unconditional surrender clause of the peace agreement was the major factor that
hindered Japanese surrender at this point in the war.

Research Paper On Fallujah
Introduction
The first battle in Fallujah during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) is known as Operation Vigilant
Resolve. This battle is regarded as one of the biggest single defeats that the United States Military has
suffered throughout all its campaigns during OIF. The United States and international media outlets
exploited this defeat, which in turn, bolstered Al Qaeda recruiting in Fallujah. This offensive failure
and retreat was backed by a huge public outcry for troop withdrawal and successful exploitation of
recruiting propaganda by the insurgents.

The Persian King, King Shapur renamed the city Piruz Shapur ( Victorious Shapur )4. For six

after the assignation of a British Officer and explorer, Lt. Col. Gerald Leachman. The British would
wage a massive air attack and dropped bombs indiscriminately killing anyone within reach. In the end,
over 1000 British soldiers and 10,000 Iraqis were killed. With a long history of war and radical

Cognitive Biases In Research
Cognitive biases refer to the tendencies of thinking in certain ways that can lead to the systematic
deviations from the standard of rationality or the good judgment which are often studied in behavioral
economics and psychology. The reality of biases according to many psychological scholars is
confirmed by the replicable research since there are numerous controversies regarding the
classification and explanation of these biases. Heuristics can be termed as the effects of the
information processing rules or the mental shortcuts that are used by the brain in production of
decisions or judgments (Tversky, Amos; Kahneman, Daniel 1983). The different forms of biases are

Essay about The Parthenon
THE PARTHENON
The Parthenon in Athens is the most important and characteristic monument of ancient Greek
civilization, it is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. It shows the finest point of Greek
architecture, history and ancient Greek religious beliefs. The Parthenon is a temple dedicated to
Athens patron goddess, Athena (Herbert, 2006:3). Athena was the goddess of civilization, wisdom,
weaving, crafts and war. She never had a consort or lover, and so she was often known as Athena

The Parthenon had sculptured panels along its exterior above the columns (called metopes) and
sculptures in the triangular spaces underneath the roof line at both ends of the building (called
pediments) and a unique sculptural feature the Ionic frieze which was around the top of the walls
(wikipedia, 2006). The Parthenon s frieze depicted the Athenian religious ritual called the Panathenaic
festival, in which a procession of citizens paraded to the Acropolis to present to Athena a new robe
woven by specially selected Athenian girls, which was held every 4 years. The frieze showed men
riding spirited horses, women walking along carrying sacred implements, and the gods gathering
together at the head of the parade to observe their human worshippers (‘Parthenon , 2006). This
showed how over confident the spirit of the Athenians where, because they dared put themselves
where ordinarily only gods and heroes might be found.
The metopes all represent various instances of the struggle between the forces of order and justice, on
the one hand and criminal chaos on the other (Silverman, 2003). There are 4 mythological scenes
shown, on the east side of the Parthenon the metopes depict the Gigantomachy which was the

Milton Friedman, The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Profits
In the article, The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Profits, Friedman states that
businessmen believe that they are defending free enterprise when they proclaim that business is not
concerned merely with profit but also with promoting desirable social ends. This social responsibility
is defined as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which is the belief that corporations owe a
greater duty to their communities and stakeholders by having a social conscience. This, among other
things, includes being environmentally responsible, contributing to non profit organizations, and
eliminating discrimination.
Friedman argues that only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because corporations are established to profit and shareholders invest money with expectations of a
greater return, managers cannot be given a directive to be socially responsible without providing
specific criteria of checks and balances to which needs to adhere. Therefore, it is imperative to the
success of a corporation for managers to not act solely but rather to act within the policies of the
shareholders.
What Friedman implies is that shareholders should only be concerned with maximizing profits and not
be obligated to be socially responsible. In that case, the manager would only have one priority, to
maximize profits. However, what if that manager determined that social endeavors is the best option
to maximize profits? This would make the corporation socially responsible while still maintaining
maximum profits. The argument presented by Friedman in this case is that while the manager is
performing as expected by maximizing profits, this type of social responsibility is frequently a cloak
for actions that are justified on other grounds rather than a reason for those actions.
This cloak refers to corporations acting socially responsible but for the sole purpose of making profits
rather than performing such endeavors for the sole purpose of benefiting society. An example would
be a solar company providing free electricity to a campus in exchange for use land to promote

One of the most common basic differences is that the patron client organization is more often
associated with breaking the law while the bureaucratic type of organization strictly abides by the law
and tries to enforce it (Albanese, 2010). In the patron client model, there is always one individual at
the top, leading the whole organization who is commonly referred to as the boss . This type of
organization is characterized by a kind of structure where it resembles a family that is neatly and
tightly bound together by loyalty and trust to each other (McIllwain, 2005). The boss , patron in this
case, main role is to aid the client in either economic or security in terms of protection that is repaid by
the same client in terms of duties as per the orders of the patron. This type of network encompasses
different types of individuals in its networks includes members of the local community, members of

Analysis Of Ordinary People
In the film Ordinary People, we see the main protagonist, Conrad, suffer from major depressive
disorder. Throughout the film, he shows symptoms of depression through challenges regulating sleep,
depressed mood, thoughts of death and suicide, along with multiple other symptoms. The Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or the DSM V, lists the symptoms of depression as:
depressed mood most of the time, reduced interest or enjoyment in most activities, challenges
regulating appetite and weight, challenges regulating sleep, physical agitation or lethargy, having
much less energy, unwarranted guilt, problems thinking, concentrating, or making decisions, and
thinking of death and suicide (Meyers, 629).

Regarding psychological functioning, Conrad is under the vicious cycle of depression. His brother s
death led him to adapt a negative explanatory style. This in turn resulted in his depressed mood and
cognitive and behavioral changes. He also believes that he has disobeyed his parents and does not
deserve their forgiveness or affection (1:09:38). Conrad lives with a sense of guilt, not only for
attempting suicide, but for things he had no control over (ex. Karen s death). From a socio cultural
approach, Conrad depression worsens due to his unstable relationship with his mother, along with
other relationships in his life. Throughout the movie, we clearly see that Conrad s mother does not
understand the severity of Conrad s mental state. She frequently believes that Conrad is fine and wants
their lives to get back to normal (0:24:37). She believes Conrad s mental health is a phase that can be
fixed by simply being harder on him. The movie also takes place in a time where discussing mental
health is taboo. Mental illness was significantly less common and thought to be a touchy subject.
Throughout the movie, we can see that people do not know how to approach the Jarretts about Conrad
s state and frequently stumble through conversations or do not understand the situation (0:22:14;
0:31:52; 0:48:05). This plays a part in Conrad s depression because he feels he can t talk to or relate to

  • 5. Brazil s Polonoreste Development Essay One of the projects that the World Bank helped finance that created problems for the nation that received assistance was Brazil s Polonoreste development program. The goal of this was to make the transport of cassiterite, used in the production of tin, easier and to open up the western part of Brazil for development and population. The negative outcomes were the rampant destruction of rainforest to slash and burn agriculture and the disturbance and destruction of the indigenous people s territory and way of life. • 6. The Minerals and Chemicals within Glass Majority of glass used in our daily glass from jars, bottles, drinking glass and even windows are called soda lime glass since it uses soda ashes in its production. Glass in general is mainly made out of sand. In fact, sand alone can be fused to produce glass but it requires a high temperature which is estimated about 1700°C for the sand to completely melt. However, to mass produce glass, other chemical and mineral are added to lower the melting temperature to ease the production. Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3) also known as soda ash is mixed with sand to produce a product of 75% silica (SiO2) and 25% sodium oxide (Na2O). This mixture will melt and fuse at a much lower temperature of 800°C. Unfortunately, the glass produced with this composition is water soluble which is also known as water glass. This is not suitable for glass bottle since it need to contain water so, to stabilise the glass, other chemical substance is mixed into the composition such as calcium oxide (CaO) and magnesium oxide (MgO). The chemical mixtures are obtained by the addition of lime stone which produce a pure and inert glass. The glass produced is originally colourless and transparent. Addition of different chemicals into the production of the glass results in different colour like green blue or brown. Most of glass bottle produced have similar composition of chemicals as their ingredients. The composition of chemicals are 70% 74% SiO2 (silica) 12% 16% Na2O (sodium oxide) 5% 11% CaO (calcium oxide) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Arguments for Open Adoption Records For those who are a part of the adoption world one of the most hotly debated issues is whether birth records should be open or closed to adoptees. With this issue comes strong feelings on both sides. In most states adoption records are fully sealed and inaccessible, unless the adoptee petitions the court. In 16 states these records are fully or partially available upon request with no court involvement, and also may depend upon when you were born. Adoption in America been ruled by a stigma. For much too long, those who could not have children, unwed mothers, and the children born out of wedlock have been shamed and humiliated. I believe it is time for these supposedly disgraceful ideas to go by the wayside, and we begin hold onto the idea that all families are beautiful things, no matter how they are composed or how they came about. There is no shame in being an infertile couple, an unwed mother, or a child with unwed parents. Two facets comprise this issue: the social and the legal. Proposed social impacts of open records are the increase or decrease of abortions and adoptions, birth parents right to privacy, the forcing of unwanted relationships with adoptee children, and the undermining of the integrity of the adoptive family. Proposed legal impacts of open records are the violation of privacy to the family, right of reproductive privacy, and a birth a mother s equal rights with a father s (because of more birth mother s names being provided in comparison to father s names). Those in opposition to open records say that it will increase abortions and decrease adoption because abortion is confidential and adoption is not. However, it has been determined that this is not the case. In fact, there is a strong correlation between open records, decreased abortions and increased adoptions. • 12. The Crisis Of The Soviet Union This paper is attempting to look at the deeper financial and policy issues in which the country Ukraine faced during their financial crisis in 2008 09. The Ukraine faced a lot of economical and political challenges in recent years, in which their economy has plummeted drastically. Economic measurements such as GDP, unemployment, and average household incomes all were impacted in a negative way. Other factors, such as the Russian gas line, forced Ukrainian businesses to cut back on costs, further hindering their overall economy. Doing research, we have strong findings that prove how much the economy has fallen compared to earlier years. 1. Focusing on more so what happened in the country rather than why it happened leads us to see that Russia recently cut off the gas line between the two countries. (BBC, 2014) This was an important resource, not only for the Ukrainian people, but also for many Ukrainian businesses. Ukraine s economy relies heavily on Shipbuilding, steel and arms. However, because many industries are so energy inefficient, they are highly dependent on imports of Russian gas, which have been heavily subsidized. (BBC, 2014) When Russia cut off the gas line, Ukrainian businesses were hurt and forced to cut costs in order to make a profit. Many of their businesses ended up firing workers so their businesses were able move back to their individual equilibrium. Because this happened, Ukraine s unemployment rate increased dramatically along with a decrease in real wages for employees. • 14. The Human Nature Of Consciousness Essay Of all the objects in the universe, the human brain is the most complex. There are as many neurons in the brain as there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy. , a quote from an issue of a Discover magazine article. But what comes from this complexion? The answer is thought. Consciousness has been quarreled between writers, scientists, priests, atheists and everyone in between. The priest says it is divine and cannot be explained, the atheist says no it s evolution. The writer romanticizes it, creating characters that contain the free will of the author but have more unrealistic complexion than any real human character. Scientists explain that we are in a state of awareness and that consciousness cannot be entirely explained as it is subjective and objectively, it cannot be measured. Human existence has transcended from being a simple organism living with survival instincts: hunting and gathering food for our kin, to working boring jobs to feed the family and to have just enough leisurely time to assure yourself not to jump off the nearest building to end it all. The question is can an organism become complex enough to consciously choose what they believe is morally right with free will. Do we live for others or ourselves? Does consciousness actually exist and how do we prove it? For many, memory is the proof of consciousness, as well as being proof of life. The political state of affairs in Massachusetts produced by the English Coercive Acts, that had been approved in reaction to the Boston Tea Party, riled up such radical New York patriot leaders as Alexander McDougall and Isaac Sears and to suggest the assembly of a general colonial congress to the Boston Committee of Correspondence. The Massachusetts General Assembly recommended in June 1774 that a broad congress be convened in Philadelphia to talk about relations among Parliament and the American colonies. The first Continental Congress took place in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774, with every one of the colonies with the exception of Georgia represented. In the whole span of American history, there has in no way been, a more inspiring congregation of luminous statesmen. One of the most significant features of the first Continental Congress was that New England and southern patriot leaders revealed that they may possibly work with each another in the quest for universal objectives. During the first Continental Congress, representatives measured four chief items of business. Representatives of the Massachusetts General Assembly, convening in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, accepted a string of resolutions announcing the Coercive Acts in opposition to the British Constitution; suggestive of arrangement of a new government in Massachusetts with ... • 16. Human Struggle In The Tokyo Story In Ozu s film, the Tokyo Story, has many scenes that define the human struggle, such as the struggle to make a living, aging and death of loved ones, and the way children eventually fall apart from their parents when they get older. The one human struggle from Ozu s film that influenced the most empathy is the inevitable truth of life that the struggle for survival in society eventually drifts individuals apart such as parents and they re children when they begin to live independently and become to take care for only themselves because of their daily busy lives. From this film, Ozu introduces a few scenes to compare the similarities of different generations in the relationship between children and parents. The first scene that begins this comparison is when Koichi s son, Minoru, had high hopes of going sightseeing with his parents and grandparents, but when suddenly Koichi had to go see his sick patient and the plans got cancelled, Minoru was very disappointed and angry with his parents because he mentions that they always say they will go next time, but they never seem to keep their words. Ozu includes this scene to show how often parents never seem to keep their promises with their children because they re constantly busy with their own things and not have enough free time to spend time with them. It s just like in reality where parents that struggle financially tend to spend more time at work than at home, thus they never seem to have the time or use their precious time to take their children out because it always involves money. We can understand from both sides of perspective, as the parent and as the child. Many of us as a child have surely experienced the samething atleast one time in our life when our parents never kept they re words and seemed too busy to play with us. If it were from a wealthy family the parents wouldn t have to worry about spending they re money and consume most of their time at work. They would most likely go out more often with their children and take them to places like Disneyland or Legoland such as most families today. • 17. Similarities Between Underground And Notes From The... As I read Notes from the underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and watched the film Rashomon directed by Akira Kurosawa I noticed a few similarities and differences between the two. They were similar because they both are frame narratives, the narrator is unreliable, there were parts in first person or was written in first person and they both had analepsis. The main differences were the themes. The themes were very different in both stories. What is the theme in literature? A theme in literature is the main topic or topics of a story. As I read through the required text and watch the film I chose egoism and individual versus society for Notes from the Underground and multiplicity for Rashomon . A frame narrative is basically a story within a story. In Notes from the Underground the whole story is basically a bunch of stories that the narrator tells about his life. The narrator talks about his past and this is where analepsis comes in which is a flashback to a different time. For example the narrator lets us know at the beginning he is forty then later on he goes on to talk about what happens when he was twenty four. The narrator also is unreliable because the story is told in an irrational way. The film Rashomon also has a bunch of stories within the film. As each person tells their side, it s almost like mini stories. And as with Notes from the Underground the stories go back as analepsis. They flashback to the time when they happened to describe what actually happens. This film is described as an unreliable narrative because each story that was told was different, which makes you wonder what really happened. When I finished watching Rashomon I immediately said the theme is multiplicity. Every person that saw what happened had their own view of what happened. There was no story that was the exact say as the other. But that there says people will do anything to make a story sound good. Each interpretation of how everything went made someone look like someone else was to blame. There is a saying there is more than one side of a story and this film proves that. With this type of substratum, it favours idyllic conditions for various types of vegetation to inhabit and create the optimum conditions for roach due to them being both herbivorous and detritivorous feeders (Weatherley, 1987; Brabrand, 1985). Looking at figure 8 this is demonstrated as the Trews weir shows that roach have the fastest growth rate and also attain the largest size than any other site with they are found. From looking at Figure 9 and 10 it is evident that roach find this type of area far more beneficial then dace as roach are in higher abundances at this site. According to a study that had previously taken place by Cowx, 1989 said that dace and roach sampled from the Trews Weir had a significant dietary over lap in this area; figures 9 and 10 also show this. Data for Trews Weir clearly implies that dace in this area do not have usual food available in this area compared to others along the river so it is essential to look for other food items to populate this region. This explains why they do not have a growth rate that is in line with the other sampling site (figure 9). The River Creedy s gradient slope is 1.9% which indicates that the flow rate is at a medium rate. This river also has a high nutrient level as there are runoffs from farm land and with the flow rates not as fast as the Exe then the nutrients as staying within area rather than getting washed away. The decision to use the Atomic Bomb against Japan was a poor one considering the damage, the devastation, and the amount of people left dead, injured, or suffering the loss of a family member or a friend, all for the sake of quickly ending the ongoing War. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The retention of the Emperor was crucial to the surrender, as the Japanese believed their Emperor was a god, the heart of the people and the culture (Long). This Japanese belief is a part of a tradition that dates back to 660 B.C. when the first Japanese Emperor, Jimmu, who according to legend was a descendant of the sun god, Amaterasu. So there fore, according to the tradition, the emperor during this time, Hirohito, was said to be a divine being. It is for this reason that the Japanese sued for peace based on the Atlantic Charter of 1941 that was drafted up by Roosevelt and Churchill on August 4th, 1941. According to the Atlantic Charter, every nation could choose its own form of government, thus, if Japan were to surrender based on these terms, they would be able to retain the emperor, their God (Alperovitz). However, when the United States offered a peace agreement based on Unconditional Surrender, the Japanese refused this offer as no provisions had been made for their Emperor. As Leon V. Sigal states, ...one point was clear to senior [United States] officials, regardless of where they stood on war termination... the critical condition for Japanese surrender was the assurance that the throne would be preserved (Alperovitz 31). What Friedman implies is that shareholders should only be concerned with maximizing profits and not be obligated to be socially responsible. In that case, the manager would only have one priority, to maximize profits. However, what if that manager determined that social endeavors is the best option to maximize profits? This would make the corporation socially responsible while still maintaining maximum profits. The argument presented by Friedman in this case is that while the manager is performing as expected by maximizing profits, this type of social responsibility is frequently a cloak for actions that are justified on other grounds rather than a reason for those actions. Katharyn s stomach was not even close to being full, but she knew she couldn t do anything about it. She was satisfied by the fact that she at least stopped herself from growling horrendously.
