As I read Notes from the underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and watched the film Rashomon
directed by Akira Kurosawa I noticed a few similarities and differences between the two. They were
similar because they both are frame narratives, the narrator is unreliable, there were parts in first
person or was written in first person and they both had analepsis. The main differences were the
themes. The themes were very different in both stories.
What is the theme in literature? A theme in literature is the main topic or topics of a story. As I read
through the required text and watch the film I chose egoism and individual versus society for Notes
from the Underground and multiplicity for Rashomon .
A frame narrative is basically a story within a story. In Notes from the Underground the whole story is
basically a bunch of stories that the narrator tells about his life. The narrator talks about his past and
this is where analepsis comes in which is a flashback to a different time. For example the narrator lets
us know at the beginning he is forty then later on he goes on to talk about what happens when he was
twenty four. The narrator also is unreliable because the story is told in an irrational way. The film
Rashomon also has a bunch of stories within the film. As each person tells their side, it s almost like
mini stories. And as with Notes from the Underground the stories go back as analepsis. They flashback
to the time when they happened to describe what actually happens. This film is described as an
unreliable narrative because each story that was told was different, which makes you wonder what

One of the most common basic differences is that the patron client organization is more often
associated with breaking the law while the bureaucratic type of organization strictly abides by the law
and tries to enforce it (Albanese, 2010). In the patron client model, there is always one individual at
the top, leading the whole organization who is commonly referred to as the boss . This type of
organization is characterized by a kind of structure where it resembles a family that is neatly and

In the film Ordinary People, we see the main protagonist, Conrad, suffer from major depressive
disorder. Throughout the film, he shows symptoms of depression through challenges regulating sleep,
depressed mood, thoughts of death and suicide, along with multiple other symptoms. The Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or the DSM V, lists the symptoms of depression as:
depressed mood most of the time, reduced interest or enjoyment in most activities, challenges
regulating appetite and weight, challenges regulating sleep, physical agitation or lethargy, having
much less energy, unwarranted guilt, problems thinking, concentrating, or making decisions, and

Regarding psychological functioning, Conrad is under the vicious cycle of depression. His brother s
death led him to adapt a negative explanatory style. This in turn resulted in his depressed mood and
cognitive and behavioral changes. He also believes that he has disobeyed his parents and does not
deserve their forgiveness or affection (1:09:38). Conrad lives with a sense of guilt, not only for
attempting suicide, but for things he had no control over (ex. Karen s death). From a socio cultural
approach, Conrad depression worsens due to his unstable relationship with his mother, along with
other relationships in his life. Throughout the movie, we clearly see that Conrad s mother does not
understand the severity of Conrad s mental state. She frequently believes that Conrad is fine and wants
their lives to get back to normal (0:24:37). She believes Conrad s mental health is a phase that can be
fixed by simply being harder on him. The movie also takes place in a time where discussing mental
health is taboo. Mental illness was significantly less common and thought to be a touchy subject.
Throughout the movie, we can see that people do not know how to approach the Jarretts about Conrad
s state and frequently stumble through conversations or do not understand the situation (0:22:14;
