The Old Man And The Library
Proverbs are commonly used in Africa are signifiers that help identifies the characteristics and values
of a certain culutre. They are usually simple but provide the reader or listener with an image that
requires reflection for the individual and the society from which it originates. The African proverb,
when an old man dies, it is as if a library has burned down illustrates the importance of wisdom, age,
and experience. This proverb highlights the necessity from preserving historical knowledge and the
devastation that comes with losing that knowledge. Libraries are symbols of education and
information typically containing works of written history whereas the old man who is in juxtaposition
with the library has preserved historical information in his memory, the library in his mind. By placing
the old man and the library as equals, the African proverbs is stating the importance of human wisdom
and the passing of history through the mouths of wise men to youthful ears. This proverb is
reminiscent of the importance of oral history in many African cultures, one being the ancient Mali
Empire. D.T. Niane s version of the Old Mali epic discusses the importance of the griot, or oral
historians, and places the emphasis and priority on the griot, rather than the kings. The griots were the
libraries and when they died, much of the information they possessed would die as well, unless it was
passed on to another griot. The symbolism in this proverb can then be taken quite literally

Summary Of Ray Kroc And Walt Disney s Relationship
In this reading, Schlosser observes Ray Kroc and Walt Disney s relationship. How they both became
the great salesmen they are today. Schlosser starts off in the reading by describing a visit to one
McDonald s Plaza in Oak Brook, Illinois. He described the building having oval windows in which he
also mentioned a campus named Hamburger University where the McDonald s managerial training is
located. Ray Kroc was the founder of the McDonald s Corporation who spread the McDonald s
brother s Speedee Service System nationwide and his idea of quality, service, cleanliness, and value
leads it.
Furthermore, He continues to describe going to the McStore a gift shop where many incredible things

EXPERIMENT 1: REACTIONS OF ENOLATE IONS WITH CARBONYL GROUPS
Aims
In this experiment we used two techniques for the reactions of enolate ions with carbonyl groups. One
technique used was Doebner reaction and the other technique used was Claisen Schmidt reaction.
Therefore the aim of this experiment is to synthesize trans p methoxycinnamic acid and to synthesize
dibenzalacetone via an aldol condensation reaction between acetone and benzaldehyde. The products
would be recrystallized using ethanol, then characterized using melting point analysis.

Environmental Sustainability At The World, Massachusetts...
Introduction
Environmental sustainability is a subject that has seen an exponential rise in its importance and
influence since the past few decades. Since 1970, when this topic started gaining wide attention,
several organizations and leaderships have been established that promote environmental sustainability.
These organizations and leaders have been set up on an international, national and even at a local
level. Today, businesses and institutions, whether global or local, have initiatives and goals that they
follow in order to make our environment sustainable. This paper will focus on the efforts of one of the
larger and more popular institutions in the world, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
What is Environmental Sustainability?
Environmental sustainability is ensuring that we maintain the quality of the world we inhabit. This
includes the air that we breathe which is constantly getting polluted by several chemicals discharged
into the environment. It also includes wildlife and vegetation which are at risk due to pollution as well
as the still present frontier attitude. Talking about the future, popular environmental activist David
Suzuki once said, We re in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyone s arguing over where
they re going to sit. The world for our future generations does not seem very promising, which is why
environmental sustainability initiatives are all the more important.

Alice Neel And Schiele Analysis
Alice Neel and Egon Schiele were some of the most daring artists of their time. Neel was especially
known for her uncaring attitude of what was in at the time, while Egon Schiele was similarly known to
paint some of the most bold nude figures of his time. Both painted what they wanted, not a thought
towards what was socially acceptable. They both focused on painting people around them, or in Neel s
case, random people on the street, and Schiele was often compared to Picasso in his obsession with
self portraits. Either way, while Alice Neel and Egon Schiele were from opposite sides of the planet,
they shared a remarkably similar style of painting and rendering of the subjects in those paintings.

In Andy Warhol we see a sense of shame, but also acceptance and contentment by the light clasp of his
hands, and the slight straining of his shoulders. His eyes are closed, which could either be out of fear
of being seen, or a sense of peace at finally being seen. His lips are delicately pursed, which, again,
shows that he could either be fighting the urge to cower and hide, or his own frustration with this
desire, and his determination to continue. In addition to these many subtle expressions of emotion, we
know that the actual man was known for his cool and confident attitude, which tells us just how much
of a big deal his utter vulnerability truly is. Neel has stripped all outside masks, and has unearthed the
frightened, old man beneath Warhol s suave persona. Conversely, we see nothing but aloofness and an
impassioned gaze within Schiele s Self Portrait with Chinese Lantern. Schiele has drawn himself
looking at the viewer with his chin held up and his shoulders tilted back, an aura of complete
confidence and self importance all but oozing out of him. His face seems to ask, Is that all that you ve
got? . The placement of his arms belies his face though, for they re tightly bound around his front,
near his waist, showing that he may not be as self assured as he

Fortune 500 Company
History
The Fortune 500 Company chosen for this paper is the Lockheed Martin Corporation. Lockheed
Martin is a global securities and information technology company headquartered in Bethesda, MD.
Lockheed Martin employs roughly 126,000 people in several facilities throughout the world. The
company s main business is in research, design, development, manufacturing, integration and
sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. Lockheed consists of four
operating units, or business areas, which consist of Aeronautics, Electronic Systems, Information

Though revenues have increased by 3.8 percent over the 2009 revenues of $45,189 million, Lockheed
Martin s ranking has dropped from 44 in the 2010 Fortune 500 list (CNNMoney, 2011). So far in
2011, Lockheed Marin is positioned to have a great year. Its 2011 third quarter report shows net sales
at $12.1 billion, compared to the $11.3 billion in third quarter 2010. Continuing operations also grew
19 percent to $665 million, compared to $557 million in 2010. The CEO, Bob Stevens, stated that this
strong third quarter is the result of the company s focus to aggressively reduce costs while still
delivering value and support to its customers. Though there is still challenging global security and
economic issues, Stevens expects continued growth for 2012 (LMC, 2011).
Economic Forces
Lockheed Martin Corporation relies heavily on defense contracts from the U.S. Government. In fact,
84 percent of the company s net sales were made through being a prime contractor or subcontractor
for the U.S. Government. These sales come from both the Department of Defense (DoD) and non
DoD agencies. The next largest area of revenue is from foreign governments that make up 15 percent
of net sales. The remaining net sales come from commercial or other customer sales. A slow economy
could cause decline or reprioritization of funding for the U.S. defense budget. This is also true for

Schlieffen Plan Essay
At the outset of World War I, Germany wanted to avoid a two front war at all costs. However, due to
the Franco Russian Alliance, Germany was forced to issue an ultimatum to Russia. Meanwhile,
Germany s ally Austria Hungary mobilized it s troops to crush Serbia (This placed Russia in a bad
spot because the state believed that it was Russia s duty to protect the Slavic people in the Balkans).
Russia did not want this situation to make them look weak, so Czar Nicholas II ordered a partial
mobilization. Unfortunately, the army reported to the Czar that they could not partially mobilize. It
was full mobilization or nothing at all. Left with no other choice, the Czar signed orders to fully
mobilize on July 30, 1914. After full mobilization was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Schlieffen Plan became the operational plan for a designated attack on France once Russia, in
response to social tensions, had mobilized. The German Army Chief of Staff, Alfred von Schlieffen
had been asked to formulate a plan to avoid a war on two fronts: Russia and France. His strategy was
meant to ensure a quick victory for Germany, which involved the bulk of the German Army, which
was ninety percent, having to march through Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg, then surrounding
the French troops in Paris. After the French had been defeated, the French Army would combine with
the German Army, and they would defeat Russia. Schlieffen felt that it was more important to take out
France first, because it was identified as Germany s most dangerous opponent. Russia was not as
advanced as France in many areas, so Germany made it a secondary

Barack Obama s The Audacity Of Hope
On July 27, 2004, Barack Obama arguably made his greatest speech, The Audacity of Hope , at the
Democratic National Convention Keynote Address. All the way through his piece, Obama focuses on
connecting himself to Americans. However, Barack Obama was a US Senate candidate for the United
States president, and in making this speech, uses this connection to raise his reputation rather than to
simply amuse the audience. Throughout The Audacity of Hope speech, Barack Obama implements
three main devices to raise his political popularity: abstract language, repetition, and structure. Part of
The Audacity of Hope is Obama s use of abstract words, which help to associate the piece to everyone
s individual view of these words. In other words, since abstract words have no explicit definitions, the
words fit to the person who defines them. Obama states, John Kerry believes in the Constitutional
freedoms that have made our country the envy of the world, and he will never sacrifice our basic
liberties, nor use faith as a wedge to divide us. In this sentence, Obama uses the words freedoms ,
sacrifice , liberties , and faith to describe John Kerry and what he does. By using these abstract words,
Obama creates a perfect American image, one that stands for everything America stands for. This is
powerful. By comparing a person to a highly symbolic figure, such as the United States, Obama
invokes high emotions among the audience, or the pathos of the piece, which he then puts onto

Essay on Jp Morgan Chase
J.P. Morgan Chase Case Write Up
I. Case Summary
The passing of the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 repealed the Glass Steagall Act, and
the rescinding of the 1956 Bank Holding Company Act. The legislation spurred a flood of mergers and
acquisitions by permitting banking, insurance, and securities firms to be affiliated/associated with one
another, as a result it became extremely profitable and advantageous for financial institutions to
consolidate and diversify their holdings. In doing so a financial firm was capable of offering a
multitude of financial products and serviced through one encompassing entity. The particular market

Because of the nature of the distinctiveness of the products offered, once a market niche is saturated it

III. Factors Contributing to Strategic Issue
(a) Industry Analysis
Buyer (Very High Bargaining Power): The individual buyer segment is the largest of the three
segments of the credit card customer market. The threat that the buyers represent is their ability to
force prices and quality down. Furthermore, due to the plethora of alternative products the switching
cost for the customer is very low, as noted in this case, buyers possess a high bargaining power which
results in higher operating costs resulting in a deduction of profits.
Supplier (High Bargaining Power): Credit card companies are a part of a larger portfolio of companies
that are held by large commercial banks. As a result of mergers and acquisitions investment banks
entered into the credit card market sector. CCS comprised 29% of the earnings for J.P. Morgan Chase
s commercial banking division, where J.P. Morgan is the financial holding company. Despite the fact
that the credit cars sector has few players and is saturated, there are still opportunities for growth,
through international and portfolio expansion.

especially strong substitute. In regard to other credit products; the

What Similarities and Differences Are There Between...
It is in our human nature to explain everything. Naturally, there are many ways of knowing.
Application of these, often defined by certain methodology, are frequently classified into areas of
knowledge. Therefore it is natural for one to see similarities and differences within the process of
attaining knowledge in different areas of knowledge. When the method forming scientific and
historical models for human understanding of the world are examined, many similarities can be seen.
These differences and similarities can also be seen when products of explanations are assessed. When
scientific and historical explanations are compared one can see many similarities.

The thesis comes from my own beliefs. For example, such thesis is claiming that differing ideologies
played a major role in the development of the Cold War. Most scholars like J. L. Gaddis and
Sewell agree that ideology played only a minor role in the development of the Cold War in the late
1940s. However, I can claim that ideology played a very important role in the development of the
Cold
War and present my evidence to support the argument. Unlike most science my explanation of
ideologies in the Cold War does no need to be accepted by the community. In history two or more
different explanations may exist and both would be valid. In science, most explanations are not
regarded as valid unless the majority of the scientific community accept the explanation. One salient
example of this is the discovery and explanation of cold fusion. In March of 1989 Martin
Fleischmann, one of the world s leading electro chemists, and Stanley Pons announced cold fusion3.
Nuclear energy, like that which power the sun produced at room temperature, giving off more energy
than what was originally put in. This promised to produce energy that is clean and efficient; ending
energy problems such as global warming4. Immediately after the announcement prestigious labs such
as Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) and California Institute of Technology (CALTECH) rushed to
reproduce the experiments of Fleischmann and Pons.5 However, MIT and CALTECH did not

Legalizing Recreational Pot Heavy marijuana smokers are at risk for some of the same health effects
as cigarette smokers, like bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses. Marijuana is the most commonly
abused illegal drug in the United States and around the world. Those who support its legalization, for
medical or for recreational use, fail to recognize that the greatest costs of marijuana are not related to
its prohibition; they are the costs resulting from marijuana use itself. If the United States were to

Besides the curiosity and easy accessibility, another reason the number of drug users across the United
States would increase would be because marijuana is a gateway for other drugs. Since the legalization
of marijuana would make smoking weed out in public and smoking in general a social norm, many
users of marijuana could possibly fall under the curiosity of what other drugs can do and how they
could make them feel while on them. The high that marijuana causes is what drives many people to
start using. Although other drugs provide different types of high, the high people experience from
marijuana may not be enough anymore if it were legalized throughout the states. Since smoking weed
would be a social norm if it were legalized, there is a high chance that many users of the drug may
often fall into irresponsible habits of using or even start to try new drugs because the high from
marijuana is not enough for them anymore. According to the Foundation for a Free Drug World,
The vast majority of cocaine users began by first using a gateway drug like marijuana, cigarettes or

Man Month which represents the production effort a single persons in a 4 week period. This is also

usually runs 8 hours a day for five days a week which equals forty hours a week (8 hours a day * 5

Essay On Maternity Leave
Women in the United States should be guaranteed a paid maternal leave. The United States is the only
industrialized country that does not guarantee paid maternity leave. The Family and Medical Leave
Act was passed in 1993, and it protects a woman s position at her job for 12 weeks: It does not

Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island these are the states that offer some form of paid leave to new
mothers. It is not enough to only have four states offer paid leave. Only 12% of Americans are able to
take a paid maternity leave (NPR). Paid maternity leave should be mandated in every state. Many
people do support the idea of paid leave, but some oppose because they do not want to pay for it. The
way maternity leave could be paid for is the same principle as Social Security. A small portion of
people s paychecks would go towards paid leave. Some people do not realize that paid maternity leave

As the message arrives at the end of the nerves, the message is transmitted to the muscles. Before the
message is transmitted to the muscles it has to pass the space between the end of the nerve and the
muscle, and that space is called neuromuscular junction. The message is transmitted from the brain to
the end of the nerve and from the nerve to the neuromuscular junction, and when the message arrives
the chemical called neurotransmitters are released.
When acetylcholine reaches the muscles side of neuromuscular junction, it attaches and locks into
receptors. If anything interferes with these steps, the nerve will not be able to control muscle
contraction. When there is an interruption of normal communication between the nerves and the
muscles at the neuromuscular junction, myasthenia gravis occur. This interruption is caused by
antibodies that prevent acetylcholine from reaching muscle by destroying or blocking the receptors.

Why Study World Religions
PHL230 Religions of the World
I think that it is important to study world religions because it can help people to become more tolerant
of other s beliefs and more compassionate to other people s causes. With so much war and
misunderstanding in the world based on religious viewpoints, it is important to take the time to find
out where and why people believe the way that they do. While I find that most people in the world
follow a religion based on their geographical location, this is not the case in the United States.
Because the US is a country where people from all over the world can come to live it is a place where
many different religions are practiced. It is important, especially for people in this country, to study

I had no previous knowledge about this religion other than it existed. The most important concept I
feel that I learned from Buddhism is part of the three marks of reality. These are made up of, change,
no permanent identity and suffering. In no permanent identity each person and each thing is changing
and made up of parts that are also constantly changing. It means that people have no permanent soul
or no self. (Molloy133). In suffering it is the fact of life that when life is lived conventionally it can
never be fully satisfying because of change. (Molloy pg 134) The mark of reality I found the most
interesting is change. The concept of change in Buddhism has us look at life as it really is. Things
change gradually and we notice the changes over time. We don t expect change but nothing ever
remains the same. (Molloy132) When I learned this I looked over my life and have to admit, that
much has changed over time. No matter how we try and keep things the same it is impossible.
Children grow up, our body ages, our relationships change. Even things in the world things are
constantly changing, landscapes change naturally from things like the tide or erosion, and seasons
come and go. In Buddhism the belief is that we are responsible for accepting this and not trying to
change the outside world but we need to change ourselves and the way we experience the world.
(Molloy 134)
In studying the world religions I learned that there are similarities; they all seem to

The term enactment is the notion that is presented by the actions of the people which brings structure

am. When observing this example one can see what Wieck has mentioned above about the
environment that carries the real object in the case of this example the environment is the news room.
As these journalists work together the stability is formed through enactment as they interact. When a
group of people work at 12 am one can conclude that this is an appropriate behaviour in an
organisation. The above explained example proves the two different ways of formation that occurs for
enactment to be achieved. The above example can also be used to prove that for enactment to be
achieved certain rules must be implemented and different roles in an organisation must be played as
the results people can corporate.

Gender Stereotypes In Sesame Street
Many times in our life we take on roles that are based more on myths and on misconceptions than on
fact, for example, gender roles. Since ancient times, it was considered natural for women to give birth
(to boys, if possible) and take care of children and the household. Women were often considered
unqualified for jobs that required physical strength. Men, on the other hand were the breadwinner of
the family. He made sure to provide his family with the basic needs, such as food, clothing, protection
and shelter.
In society, the media is a powerful socializing agent for young children. When children watch TV they
see males act more aggressively than females, and that females are more likely to understand other
people s needs and feelings. All of the children shows in the 1991 Saturday morning TV lineup had
male lead characters. Even on public TV s Sesame Street , most of the Muppet characters were
identified as males. In 2007, there are a few female Muppet characters on Sesame Street , such as Zoë
(Elmo s friend) and bilingual Rosita. In the New York ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When children are born, mothers and fathers tend to describe boys as firm, alert, and strong, and girls
as beautiful, pretty and cute. There is no difference between babies except for gender. The different
descriptions reflect the parents attitudes about boys and girls rather than the babies actual
characteristics. These stereotypes find there way into a child s bedroom. A boy s room contains more
vehicles and sports equipment, while a girl s room is more likely to contain dolls. Fathers, in
particular, treat sons and daughters differently. Fathers play more roughly with sons than with
daughters, and usually give them more independence. The different messages that are received by
boys and girls from parents and TV become important to the way they view and behave in

Racism And Cultural Differences In Clint Eastwood s Gran...
Gran Torino, directed by Clint Eastwood, is a very moving and captivating drama. When the story
opens we see Walt Kowalski residing on his front porch drinking beer, while simultaneously watching
the world with a squint and a torrent of harsh criticism. Walt has essentially no remaining family
members, as his wife had just recently passed away, and he wants nothing to do with his two
successful sons. It s a story about tolerance and cultural differences, but also one of hope, and unlikely
friendships. The film focuses on an highly racist and violent Asian neighborhood. Ever since the
recent surge of immigrants the neighborhood has gone down hill a great deal. Walt s neighbors are the
Lors, a Hmong family, and Walt does not trouble to distinguish

Why Is Custer Defeated
The most significant figure as to why Custer was defeated at the battle of little Big Horn was that
General Terry had divided his force. He sent Custer and the 7th cavalry to fight the battle, which was a
smaller number than he could have sent. This meant that there were fewer men. To make things worse,
Custer then divided the men again, into 4 groups, the mule train, Bentine s group, Reno s group, and
Custer s group. This caused them to be outnumbered by the Indians even more, resulting in the loss of
the Battle. Another key reason why Custer was defeated in the battle was that Custer had ignored
warning from Indians scouts, who had told him not to attack, as the Indian tribe was bigger and more
powerful. Custer ignored this information,

The Book Joshu A Parable For Today
To begin with, I really enjoyed the book by the name of Joshua: A Parable For Today , was a great and
interested read relating to Jesus Christ. I believe readers should take time and read this book for many
reasons and one them is that it makes you think throughout the whole book or novel for clues and
strange things which makes the book more interesting and very fun to read throughout the entire
book/novel. I truly believe that readers should read this book because it s interesting, mysterious, and
in some parts or chapters of the novel/book you can picture, see or visualize the characters doing
things like, as I was reading briefly through the book I pictured, saw, or visualized Joshua and God
talking and having a good relationship with God
No I don t believe that Joshua was Jesus in many reasons, because Joshua might of disappeared in the
book and did some crazy things but I don t really believe Joshua had to do or be anything pertaining to
Jesus Christ at all. After the death of Moses, God calls on Joshua to lead the Israelites across the
Jordan River and take possession of the promised land, which gives a slight clue ... Show more

Now back to the topic Joshua is really like a leader Joshua rallies them to conquer the city and kill
everyone except for Rahab. And now we see that Joshua wasn t Jesus/God, but Jesus/God may have
helped him and giving him strength, wisdom, and leadership, etc to make Joshua who he was in the
novel/book. I could also say Joshua was blessed with talents from or by God, Joshua wasn t God at
any point in the story. And I also believe and could say Joshua didn t do the things he did on his own
end and I could see God helping him throughout his journey and being the Mighty Joshua he is

Nightingale was conceived in Italy in 1820, however she experienced childhood in England. Not at all

the desires of her family, she prepared to be a medical caretaker at the age of thirty one. In the midst of
colossal challenges and preferences, she composed and dealt with the nursing tend to a military doctor
s facility in Turkey amid the Crimean War. She came back to England after the war, where she set up a
school, the Nightingale Training School for Nurses, to prepare medical caretakers. Once more, she
experienced awesome resistance, as attendants were viewed as minimal more than housemaids by the
doctors of the time. Due to her endeavors, the status of attendants was raised to a regarded occupation,
and the premise for expert nursing by and large was established. Nightingale s commitments are
paramount. She perceived that nourishment is a critical piece of nursing consideration. She established

benchmarks for doctor s facility administration and an arrangement of nursing instruction, making
nursing a regarded occupation for women around the world.

Distilled Water Procedure
Procedure: Research the topic. Collect all materials needed to conduct the experiment. The first
experiment to be performed is the control test. During this time, it is optional to set up the video
camera in front of the setup so that the entire experiment can be recorded. Make sure all the water,
solutes, and equipment is at a steady room temperature. This is to ensure that temperature changes do
not drastically alter the outcome of the experiment. Pour exactly 2 ounces of distilled water into the
measuring cup. Transfer the distilled water into the boiling flask, making sure not to spill any of the
water. Add the boiling stones into the flask carefully. Insert the rubber stopper on top of the boiling

Two Factors By Innate Intelligence
Ryan Abdullah 11.2
(a) What is meant by the term innate intelligence? [2]
It is a form of intelligence that is said to be derived from decadence through heredity.
(b) Describe two factors that may influence a person s level of intelligence. [4]
Diet, the intake of a proper balanced diet containing a variety of different foods is necessary for the
physical development of an individual within a society. If an individual does not develop properly,
he/she will not be able to perform at the same level as he/she could. As he/she won t be able to
perform at the same level there intelligence will be altered (usually in a negative manner). Educational
opportunities, if a person comes from a fortunate background they might have the opportunity to
pursue their education in private schools and higher education as the cost as a percentage of their total
income will be lower than that of a person from an unfortunate background.
(c) How might examinations not reflect ability[6] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can easily brought about by many factors such as how the questions on the actual test are
formulated; this creates distorted results. The factor of Stress in an examination greatly changes the
reflection of ability when a student takes an exam as the stress can cause the student to not answer
questions in the way he/she usually would usually do. This skews the data and makes it less
representative of the students overall ability.Examinations rely on memorization not skills and
knowledge of a subject. This is easily seen in exams revolving around manual skills such as written
practical examinations where a student might know what to do in real life but does not know how to

Obstacles In The Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail is a massive walking trail that is said to be roughly 2,150 mile long from end to
end (pg. 7). This trail is one of few enormous walking trails in the United States. It runs from Georgia
all the way to Maine. People set off to walk this trail every spring. They may walk it straight through
or in sections. Many obstacles are involved throughout the trail such as: animals, the weather,
diseases, and even plants can be a danger as Bryson states multiple times throughout his book. People
walk these trails to get a sense of nature that one would not normally feel on a regular daily basis
elsewhere. The problem with this is that it creates a division between us and nature. We now have to
go out and find nature rather than living ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He talks a lot about the reason and way the trail was created. He faces many challenges on his walk
such as the wildlife (bears), the weather (snow), and he even talks about giving up quite a few times.
Another way that Americans are so far disconnected to nature is because we know that we can go and
sleep in a nice warm bed in a heated house full of food and everything needed to live. That causes a
large disconnection. Now days when a family goes camping they think heat, running water, and
electricity still counts. That is not the camping I grew up with where we bring water and it s typically
cold, the food made is pre bought and roasted over an open flame, and we do not have any electricity.
This is otherwise known as rough camping. Being out in the woods can be a challenge if not properly
prepared for the obstacles faced. The book A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson was a great read and
very much exhibited the division between Americans and the natural world people tend to forget. It
takes true dedication to walk through the Appalachian Trail. With sweat, time, and dedication it will
pay

Road Trip Into Tradition Research Paper
Road Trip into Tradition
Every year, my family makes an effort to travel across the country from our hometown in Tennessee to
southern California to visit family. Our family has celebrated many traditions over the years, but this
is one that means the most to me. Also, some of the most memorable moments of my life happened
during this tradition. It all started when I was around 4 years old. My family decided to move away
from the big city in Southern California to a more country setting more suitable for raising children.
Ever since, we have made the trip back and forth, only missing one year since. This unique tradition
has helped me to develop to appreciate my family and bring us closer together.
Our trek starts in Tennessee, and goes through five states before reaching California, at the other end
of the continent. Arkansas is mundane driving through, with nothing really interesting to look at and
see, save lots of trees and cows. Oklahoma is just one big plain, making it even worse than the
previous state. It also has wind turbines, which is the only object to break the monotony of the
landscape. Texas has tons of oil fields filled with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is also the game where we just pick a different kind of truck, and see who can count to one
hundred of that kind. These games really help pass the time, and also are really fun when going
through a state as boring as New Mexico. My favorite game would always be Uno, a card game where
each player tries to get rid of their hand of cards first. Sometimes though, it can cause some tension in
the backseat, when one of us has all four wild cards. We would play something like bloody knuckles,
but our mother never really liked the end result of that. The moments we share in this tradition of ours
help us be not just literally close, but also

humanistic existential, cognitive, psychodynamic, and sociocultural perspectives. Each one of these
perspectives looks for answers about behavior through diverse methods and through looking for
answers to different types of questions. The different approaches, each perspective form their own
explanations about behavior. The biological perspective, is the perspective that looks at how your
nervous system, hormones and genetic makeup affect your behavior. Biological psychologists explore
the connection between your mental states and your brain, nerves and hormones to explore how your

The Necessity of Routine Dental Examinations Essay examples
Routine Dental Examinations Visiting a dentist at least twice a year for a routine examination is
recommended to find dental problems early. A knowledgeable dentist understands how to examine the
facial structure, neck and mouth for abnormalities such as growths that indicate cancer. During the
examination, the dentist can quickly fill tiny cavities or remove hardened plaque. Despite brushing
carefully each day, many individuals miss tartar buildup below the gumline or between teeth. The
dentist can remove the sticky plaque with scraping devices to prevent bacteria from causing gum
inflammation and enamel erosion. If the dentist notices additional problems, further treatment is
necessary. Bad Breath Many patients visit a dentist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bacteria from plaque and tartar are the primary causes of decayed tooth enamel. Bacteria can destroy
enamel causing an individual to experience pain from inside the tooth where tiny nerve endings are
located. Tooth decay occurs between teeth, on biting surfaces or near dental roots. A dentist can
usually restore a tooth with a small cavity by using a specialized drill to remove damaged enamel and
bacteria. After removing the decay and sanitizing the area, a restoration is necessary to support the
outer layer of a tooth. Gum Inflammation Individuals experiencing gum inflammation should see a
dentist quickly for treatment. The typical signs of gingivitis of the gums are swollen tissue, frequent
bleeding or discomfort while chewing food. Immediate intervention from a dentist is required when
gum tissue has a chronic infection. Untreated gingivitis can lead to loss of teeth due to root or pulp
infection. In addition to a visual examination of teeth and gums, a dentist will require medical imaging
tests to look at underlying structures including bone tissue. Treatment of gingivitis includes removing
bacteria from the teeth, roots and gums with curettage, planing and scaling techniques. Dental Trauma
A dental emergency requires quick thinking and action to save a tooth. A dentist is always available to
assist with dental emergencies immediately. If a tooth is knocked out of the mouth by a sport injury or
automobile accident, carefully pick up the

  • 2. The Old Man And The Library Proverbs are commonly used in Africa are signifiers that help identifies the characteristics and values of a certain culutre. They are usually simple but provide the reader or listener with an image that requires reflection for the individual and the society from which it originates. The African proverb, when an old man dies, it is as if a library has burned down illustrates the importance of wisdom, age, and experience. This proverb highlights the necessity from preserving historical knowledge and the devastation that comes with losing that knowledge. Libraries are symbols of education and information typically containing works of written history whereas the old man who is in juxtaposition with the library has preserved historical information in his memory, the library in his mind. By placing the old man and the library as equals, the African proverbs is stating the importance of human wisdom and the passing of history through the mouths of wise men to youthful ears. This proverb is reminiscent of the importance of oral history in many African cultures, one being the ancient Mali Empire. D.T. Niane s version of the Old Mali epic discusses the importance of the griot, or oral historians, and places the emphasis and priority on the griot, rather than the kings. The griots were the libraries and when they died, much of the information they possessed would die as well, unless it was passed on to another griot. The symbolism in this proverb can then be taken quite literally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Environmental Sustainability At The World, Massachusetts... Introduction Environmental sustainability is a subject that has seen an exponential rise in its importance and influence since the past few decades. Since 1970, when this topic started gaining wide attention, several organizations and leaderships have been established that promote environmental sustainability. These organizations and leaders have been set up on an international, national and even at a local level. Today, businesses and institutions, whether global or local, have initiatives and goals that they follow in order to make our environment sustainable. This paper will focus on the efforts of one of the larger and more popular institutions in the world, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. What is Environmental Sustainability? Environmental sustainability is ensuring that we maintain the quality of the world we inhabit. This includes the air that we breathe which is constantly getting polluted by several chemicals discharged into the environment. It also includes wildlife and vegetation which are at risk due to pollution as well as the still present frontier attitude. Talking about the future, popular environmental activist David Suzuki once said, We re in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyone s arguing over where they re going to sit. The world for our future generations does not seem very promising, which is why environmental sustainability initiatives are all the more important. • 7. Alice Neel And Schiele Analysis Alice Neel and Egon Schiele were some of the most daring artists of their time. Neel was especially known for her uncaring attitude of what was in at the time, while Egon Schiele was similarly known to paint some of the most bold nude figures of his time. Both painted what they wanted, not a thought towards what was socially acceptable. They both focused on painting people around them, or in Neel s case, random people on the street, and Schiele was often compared to Picasso in his obsession with self portraits. Either way, while Alice Neel and Egon Schiele were from opposite sides of the planet, they shared a remarkably similar style of painting and rendering of the subjects in those paintings. In Andy Warhol we see a sense of shame, but also acceptance and contentment by the light clasp of his hands, and the slight straining of his shoulders. His eyes are closed, which could either be out of fear of being seen, or a sense of peace at finally being seen. His lips are delicately pursed, which, again, shows that he could either be fighting the urge to cower and hide, or his own frustration with this desire, and his determination to continue. In addition to these many subtle expressions of emotion, we know that the actual man was known for his cool and confident attitude, which tells us just how much of a big deal his utter vulnerability truly is. Neel has stripped all outside masks, and has unearthed the frightened, old man beneath Warhol s suave persona. Conversely, we see nothing but aloofness and an impassioned gaze within Schiele s Self Portrait with Chinese Lantern. Schiele has drawn himself looking at the viewer with his chin held up and his shoulders tilted back, an aura of complete confidence and self importance all but oozing out of him. • 10. Barack Obama s The Audacity Of Hope On July 27, 2004, Barack Obama arguably made his greatest speech, The Audacity of Hope , at the Democratic National Convention Keynote Address. All the way through his piece, Obama focuses on connecting himself to Americans. However, Barack Obama was a US Senate candidate for the United States president, and in making this speech, uses this connection to raise his reputation rather than to simply amuse the audience. Throughout The Audacity of Hope speech, Barack Obama implements three main devices to raise his political popularity: abstract language, repetition, and structure. Part of The Audacity of Hope is Obama s use of abstract words, which help to associate the piece to everyone s individual view of these words. In other words, since abstract words have no explicit definitions, the words fit to the person who defines them. Obama states, John Kerry believes in the Constitutional freedoms that have made our country the envy of the world, and he will never sacrifice our basic liberties, nor use faith as a wedge to divide us. In this sentence, Obama uses the words freedoms , sacrifice , liberties , and faith to describe John Kerry and what he does. By using these abstract words, Obama creates a perfect American image, one that stands for everything America stands for. This is powerful. By comparing a person to a highly symbolic figure, such as the United States, Obama invokes high emotions among the audience, or the pathos of the piece, which he then puts onto ... In no permanent identity each person and each thing is changing and made up of parts that are also constantly changing. It means that people have no permanent soul or no self. (Molloy133). In suffering it is the fact of life that when life is lived conventionally it can never be fully satisfying because of change. (Molloy pg 134) The mark of reality I found the most interesting is change. The concept of change in Buddhism has us look at life as it really is. Things change gradually and we notice the changes over time. We don t expect change but nothing ever remains the same. (Molloy132) When I learned this I looked over my life and have to admit, that much has changed over time. No matter how we try and keep things the same it is impossible. Children grow up, our body ages, our relationships change. Even things in the world things are constantly changing, landscapes change naturally from things like the tide or erosion, and seasons come and go. First, preconceptions are used to set aside portions of the field of experience for further attention, that is, perception is focused on predetermined stimuli. Second, people act within the context of these portions of experience guided by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Enactment theory can be seen as a process whereby people achieve continuity and coordination. Enactment occurs after a group of people has implemented a plan and succeeded in what they have structured. For example, a group of five journalists working on one huge story that goes to print at 12 am. When observing this example one can see what Wieck has mentioned above about the environment that carries the real object in the case of this example the environment is the news room. As these journalists work together the stability is formed through enactment as they interact. When a group of people work at 12 am one can conclude that this is an appropriate behaviour in an organisation. The above explained example proves the two different ways of formation that occurs for enactment to be achieved. The above example can also be used to prove that for enactment to be achieved certain rules must be implemented and different roles in an organisation must be played as the results people can corporate. • 20. Gender Stereotypes In Sesame Street Many times in our life we take on roles that are based more on myths and on misconceptions than on fact, for example, gender roles. Since ancient times, it was considered natural for women to give birth (to boys, if possible) and take care of children and the household. Women were often considered unqualified for jobs that required physical strength. Men, on the other hand were the breadwinner of the family. He made sure to provide his family with the basic needs, such as food, clothing, protection and shelter. In society, the media is a powerful socializing agent for young children. When children watch TV they see males act more aggressively than females, and that females are more likely to understand other people s needs and feelings. All of the children shows in the 1991 Saturday morning TV lineup had male lead characters. Even on public TV s Sesame Street , most of the Muppet characters were identified as males. In 2007, there are a few female Muppet characters on Sesame Street , such as Zoë (Elmo s friend) and bilingual Rosita. In the New York ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A boy s room contains more vehicles and sports equipment, while a girl s room is more likely to contain dolls. Fathers, in particular, treat sons and daughters differently. • 22. Why Is Custer Defeated The most significant figure as to why Custer was defeated at the battle of little Big Horn was that General Terry had divided his force. He sent Custer and the 7th cavalry to fight the battle, which was a smaller number than he could have sent. This meant that there were fewer men. To make things worse, Custer then divided the men again, into 4 groups, the mule train, Bentine s group, Reno s group, and Custer s group. This caused them to be outnumbered by the Indians even more, resulting in the loss of the Battle. Another key reason why Custer was defeated in the battle was that Custer had ignored warning from Indians scouts, who had told him not to attack, as the Indian tribe was bigger and more powerful. If an individual does not develop properly, he/she will not be able to perform at the same level as he/she could. Another way that Americans are so far disconnected to nature is because we know that we can go and sleep in a nice warm bed in a heated house full of food and everything needed to live. That causes a large disconnection. Now days when a family goes camping they think heat, running water, and electricity still counts. That is not the camping I grew up with where we bring water and it s typically cold, the food made is pre bought and roasted over an open flame, and we do not have any electricity. This is otherwise known as rough camping. Being out in the woods can be a challenge if not properly prepared for the obstacles faced. Our family has celebrated many traditions over the years, but this is one that means the most to me. Also, some of the most memorable moments of my life happened during this tradition.
