Audit Risk in the Brave New World
Audit amp; taxation | Audit Risk in the Brave New World | Audit Risk Model | | | 6/27/2010 |

INTRODUCTION
The audit risk model has provided a conceptual framework for auditing practice for more than 40
years. Despite practical difficulties in implementation and criticisms of its theoretical foundation, the
model has been fairly effective in helping auditors analyze risks and use that analysis to determine the
nature, timing, and extent of audit procedures (especially substantive procedures) in audits of financial
statements. The audit risk model provides a conceptual framework for the risk assessment standards.
In recent years, auditors have tried to apply the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are: * ISA 315, Understanding the Entity and its Environment and Assessing the Risks of
Material Misstatements * ISA 330, The Auditor s Procedures in Response to Assessed Risks * ISA
500 (Revised), Audit Evidence.
The requirements in these newly issued risk standards represent significant changes to the standards
governing audits of financial statements. They enable the auditors to focus more clearly on areas
where there is a greater risk of misstatement of the financial statements. The belief is that these risk
standards will increase audit quality. This is as a result of better risk assessments through a more
detailed understanding of the entity and its environment, including internal control, and improved
design and performance of audit procedures to respond to assessed risks of material misstatements.
The improved linkage of audit procedures and assessed risks is expected to result in a greater
concentration of audit effort on areas where there is a greater risk of material misstatements.
The scope of each of the risk standards is reflected in the introduction to the standards, and can be
summarized as follows.
ISA 315
This standard provides guidance on performing audit procedures to obtain a broader understanding of
the entity and its environment, including its internal control, and on assessing risks of material
misstatement. The IAASB recognises that there may be specific considerations relevant to the audit of

Changing Hierarchies in Early America Essay
Changing Hierarchies in Early America
In A Model of Christian Charity, John Winthrop proposes to change the existing social and economic
hierarchy. The old world social hierarchy divided the classes based on wealth and property. The
highest class consisted of the king and royal family, then followed by the bishops. Next on the
hierarchy were the nobles, gentlemen, and the wealthy. And at the bottom of the hierarchy of course,
were the poor. Because of this extreme division, there was no middle ground between the wealthy and
poor. That is, the old world hierarchy allowed the rich to hold power over the poor. The poor would
live and work on the land in exchange for protection from the wealthy. In other words, the poor had to
work as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you love someone, they will love you back. This will of course lead to a better economy and society.
When people love each other, they are able to step beyond the divisions placed on them by society. If
people are willing to step past those divisions and aid each other, then the class systems become
unimportant. This mobility will bring the rich closer to the poor while at the same time allowing the
poor to rise higher to the level of the rich. In addition, Winthrop explains that if people love each
other, that God will delight to dwell among ... His own people (158). In other words, the presence of
God will encourage them in being successful. Then the ideals of the Massachusetts Bay Colony will
spread, along with the concept of God s love. Even though Winthrop began his argument by affirming
the old world social hierarchy, by the end of his sermon he has created a community of love. Winthrop
s steps set up an ideal, harmonious Christian community, mostly free of the divisions caused by social
differences. This is remarkable because he is changing the ideals for the new world. A community of
love is the beginning of a republic. Winthrop is setting up Americans to create a democratic society by
instilling in everyone the concept of the community of love. Anne Bradstreet also wanted to create a
community of love. However, she takes Winthrop s idea of a community of love a step further. In

Raising Tuition Rates
Raising Tuition Rates Tuition rates have been rising exponentially since World War II and the GI
Bill... which allowed for, ...an explosive increase in the number and proportion of Americans who go
to college (Nathan 148). This change, though largely due to inflation, has been rising past what
families can afford to pay, and has led to difficulties for students exiting high school. These difficulties
have been seen by campuses, and many already have a plan to help these students pay for the
rocketing tuition prices. This escalating problem has been caused by multiple entities, individuals, and
ideals. Firstly, between 1985 and 1995, the federal and state funding has decreased by almost twenty
five percent, and since then has decreased to account for only fifty percent of the public university s
budget, as more of the government s money has been allotted to the needs of the country s healthcare,
welfare, and prisons. Also, universities have increased the percentage of their budgets allocated to
administration roles, mostly in an attempt to influence government and to market their degree and
certificate programs (Nathan 149). Furthermore, a study performed by, William Bowen, now president
of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, attributed tuition rising faster than the rate of inflation primarily
to the nature of the educational process, which did not permit academia to share in the productivity
gains that caused earnings growth in the rest of society... and to the Winner Take

Economic Effects Of The Market Revolution
The major change in the American economy was people began to exchange goods rather than make
them for themselves. Especially, Western settlers in isolated areas needed ways to transport their
goods to distant markets. The Market Revolution was an economic transformation of America. It was
a dramatic change in labor and production, which made easy transportation and fast communication
across the country. There were many improvements occurred which included an improved production
of cotton, lowered transportation costs to make it easier to sell things, allowed women to go to work
outside, and protected contract rights.
The Market Revolution all started with the cotton gin, which was an important part of the revolution
beginning in 1815 of Eli Whitney. During the seventeenth century, Americans were in need of cotton
even though they had the ability to build textile factories. The planters grew cotton, but it had wasted
efforts of labors. It took a day of a slave of just separating one pound cotton. The cotton gin changed
all of this. It revolutionized agriculture making a cotton economy by speeding up the process of
removing cottonseeds from fibers, which allowed a labor to make fifty pounds of cotton per day and
farmers could plant cotton. By the middle of the nineteenth century, cotton had become a major export
crop in America and opening cotton production into new areas. The effects of the cotton gin
contributed greatly to industrialization included the import of slaves,

Disabilities Rights Movement Research Paper
After watching, videos, going over the material, and doing some research about the disabilities rights
movement I found it sad that people have fought so long and hard to get the rights there are now for
people with disabilities, the rights that should be unspoken and come naturally, not have to be fought
for. The opening of the American School for the Deaf happened in 1817 in Hartford Connecticut. This
was an important event. This was the first School for children with disabilities in the western part of
the world. I believe this opened the door for the possibility of more children with disabilities to go to
school. This school started to help some people see that these children could learn and succeed with
the right help and support. Maybe people of this decade were afraid of peoples differences therefore
didn t want to acknowledge they may be able to learn and be a contributing person to society. The
American school helped change these attitudes I believe Things have really changed since then. There
are now inclusion programs which children with disabilities learn and interact with their typical
developing peers. I think people have come a long way with fearing the differences in other ... Show

will be able to detoxify very well your body, relax all your muscles and get rid of any sort of pains,
and also reduce stress and anxiety. Furthermore, this is a very pleasant way to spend quality time with
the entire family. However, since you are going to pay a significant amount of money for a unit like
this, you are probably wondering how long do hot tubs last. Are they a long term investment? Have a
look at the following information in order to find the desired answer.
Plastic components
The plastic components of your hot tub must be maintained properly and regularly as well, so that
they can last a very long period of time. If you do not do so, then they are actually the ones that go
first. Generally, this is what happens in most cases due to the fact that the palstic parts are the ones
that frequently come into contact with the chemicals that are used for cleaning the water. Chlorine, for
example, will slowly dissolve these pieces over time. Other agents will do the same, and this is why it
is essential that you ensure a proper and regular maintenance. You must definitely clean everything
when you drain and refill the unit. By doing so, the plastic components will last up to 15 years. A
typical hot tub can last somewhere between 5 and 20 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Maturity In Tom Sawyer
Throughout multiple exciting adventures and dangerous explorations in the novel The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer , we see Tom Sawyer mature. He matures through the love of Aunt Polly, Becky, Huck
and other characters in the novel. In his search for treasure, Tom learns about personal accountability.
Even in everyday life, we watch him develop from a boy into an adult. From a selfish young,
mischievous lad, Tom becomes a sincere, kind and responsible young man.
Before we continue, we should discuss what maturity is. According to Wikipedia, the definition of
maturity is a psychological term used to indicate that a person responds to the circumstances or
environment in an appropriate and adaptive manner. This response is generally learned rather than
instinctual, and is not determined by one s age. Maturity also encompasses awareness of the correct
time and place to behave, knowing when to act with appropriate emotion for the situation. Maturity
incorporates personal accountability, meaning you take ownership of situations you are involved in.
By following one s conscience, you are taking personal accountability.
During the adventures of Huck and Tom s treasure hunting, the two came across the antagonist, Injun
Joe. Earlier, Huck and Tom witnessed Injun Joe murder a doctor and put the blame on an innocent
man. The two juvenile boys had made a vow that neither of them would tell anyone since they were
scared that Injun Joe would come after them. This shows fear that most people would experience in
this situation. Knowing that an innocent man will be punished for an act he did not commit, Tom s
conscience convinced him to testify against Injun Joe, freeing a guiltless man. Critics... view incidents
such as Tom s encounters with Injun Joe...as confrontations between innocence and evil which initiate
Tom into the world of adult responsibilities and consequences.
Near the beginning of the book, Tom falls in love with a beautiful young girl, Becky. The relationship
that Tom and Becky shared is very childish and immature. When Tom mentions his past girlfriend,
Becky gets super emotional and upset because she thinks Tom is still in love with her. Tom also claims
that he will marry Betty even though

Uses And Limitations Of Biosensors
Detecting bacteria is a rapidly expanding field of research, producing innovative and effective ways of
overcoming a variety of existing limitations. Current laboratory based bacterial detection and
identification techniques often require long procedures, provide low sensitivity and specificity as well
as slow turnaround times. These conventional techniques include microscopy, culturing bacteria,
polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and biochemical assays.
There is a heavy emphasis on developing new biosensors to overcome these prominent drawbacks. An
ideal biosensor would provide a detection sensitivity less than 103 CFU/ml within minutes,
distinguish between serotypes of bacteria in complex environments, be compact and portable, require

These methods allow for quantitative and kinetic measurements of interactions and often measure
refractive index changes, which determines the sample concentration or surface density. [7]
Traditionally, label free techniques were not highly sensitive due to the lack of signal amplification
which would be provided by a label. However, there have been advancements in this field that will be
discussed which have provided label free biosensors with high sensitivities.
For specific sensing applications, it is desirable to have the bacterial detection sensor immobilized
rather than suspended in solutions. Immobilisation allows the static sensor component to be washed
and re used, thus decreasing the long term cost to the user. These sensor surfaces are commonly
designed to resist fouling and non specific interactions, as well as provide a permanent attachment of
the sensing components without negating the sensing capabilities. Without immobilization of the
sensing components, the systems often leave the sample contaminated with the sensing components.
Depending on the hazard levels and toxicity of the sample post detection, it could require waste
disposal protocols which are inconvenient, expensive and reduce the probability of wide scale
implementation of the detection method. To counter this setback, a number of optical bacterial

There s a Soldier in All of Us. It was greatly anticipated that the Call of Duty: Black Ops commercial

Hope is an extremely valued quality to many people, being able to dream and hope of new situations
can keep individuals going. This quality is able to keep people extremely motivated when they are

amounts of hope in multiple different ways. This pilot is so ecstatic when they are able to get the
aeroplane up and running. Their hope and motivation pushed the pilot and those with them to create a

The Risks Of The Shipping Industry
The Risk sources in the Shipping Industry along with current opportunities and future threats to the
company s core business
Technically, shipping risk can be defined as the measurable liability for any financial loss arising from
unforeseen imbalances between the supply and demand for sea transport (Stopford 2009). More
specifically, shipowners may face eight different risk types during their operation in the tanker market.
These risks can be categorized into the following types (Kavussanos and Visvikis 2006):
Business risk: Is the risk generated by volatility in freight rates which cause uncertainty to the
shipowner s income, in other words fluctuations in EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes). It
depends on the demand and the price of the product sold. It is influenced by (a) freight rates, (b)
voyage costs (fuel costs, port charges, canal dues and broking commissions), (c) operating costs
(manning, repairs, maintenance, stores, insurance and administration) and finally (d) exchange rates as
income is counted in US dollars while costs are counted in current exchange.
Figure 6. Average earnings of all tankers Brent Arab Crude Oil Prices.
In Figure 6 we distinguish the bunker price fluctuations. Bunker is a derivative of Crude Oil and as it
fluctuates it increases the volatility and the amount of risk exposure of the shipping company. More
specifically as the chart depicts, when Brent Crude Oil goes up the Average Tanker Earnings follow

Essay about A Rose for Emily
Throughout the Eighteen Years of my life I read many interesting short stories. Some stories where
more eye catching than others. Furthermore A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner and
Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka were not on the top of my list. In my opinion, the stories were eye
catching because of how the author made its characters react and respond toward the suspense and
eeriness in certain parts of the climax of the stories. For example, in A Rose For Emily the ladies of
the community said We did not say she was crazy then. We believed that she had to do that (Faulkner
81) These two lines were said about Emily after the people found out about the death of Emily s father
and they knew that she was keeping his body inside of her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Faulkner started to describe Emily as a poor lonely woman that had no one to take care of her. This
was due to the reason that her father had died. This set the mood of the story and it made the reader
have a certain image of Emily. Emily did not respond to any pity from the community. Her set of
mind, as far as I believe, was not caring about what the other people thought. She was still in grief for
her father s death. Furthermore, as the story progressed Faulkner started to give glimpses of who
Emily really was. The real Emily was starting to show when Emily said I want some poison. I want
the best kind. I don t care what kind (Faulkner 82). What Faulkner gave the other side of Emily on this
page, it gave the story a twist because it happened randomly. He told us what she was buying, but he
did not tell us what she was going to use it. Furthermore he was trying to show that there is a dark side
to every person. The response that was caught from this was suspicious in a way that no one seemed
to mind what she was really going to use the poison for. Not even when Homer, her crush, had
disappeared. On the other hand, Kafka gave his character Gregor a similar twist. Gregor said Oh God,
what a strenuous profession I ve chosen traveling day in day out (Kafka 612)! In the beginning of the
story Kafka described Gregor as a normal person with an average job. Nevertheless said at the
beginning of the story how he found himself transformed into

Color Analysis in Raised the Red Lantern Essay
Color Emphasis in Raise the Red Lantern

Scholars and film critiques have often regarded the fifth generation film Director, Zhang Yi Mou s
films as a visually sensual feast (Zhu 26). The predominant use of the color Red in his highly stylized
films: Red Sorghum (1988), Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern (1991) are evidence of his trademark
visual style thus leading scholars to critically analyze the symbolic representation of the color. I would
argue however, in addition to the prevalent use of red in his art house films, there are several
supporting colors (black, white, grey, blue), intertwining with the color red. Zhang seems ... Show

According to Kong, Red in Chinese culture symbolizes luck and popularity and is commonly used in
important rituals and ceremonies...the color red is a vital signifier that is often charged with a special
ironic power (123). Red is often associated with passion and lust, though the latter is true to this film,
the symbolic representation of red amount to sexuality as a means of gaining political power within
the Chen household. The dining table scene where 3rd mistress arrives fashionably late dressed in a
bright red gown shows that she currently holds the power in the amongst the four mistresses. This
power , once acquired comes with the consequence of being objectified under the red light to the

ironic. Their victory is the attention of the master s affection for one night. This further emphasizes the

Analysis Of Three Financial Companies Post Great Recession
Analysis of Three Financial Companies Post Great Recession
In the post great recession climate, no other industry has faced as many challenges as finance. James
Sterngold (2015) points out some of the challenges with the following:
Low interest rates will continue to squeeze the amount banks earn on their lending, keeping a lid on
their profits and revenues, many analysts and portfolio managers say. Regulations adopted following
the financial crisis, which were designed to make banks safer, will also continue to restrain
profitability by pushing lenders out of some business and forcing them to sell riskier assets and hold
more capital, crimping returns. (para. 3)

Big Data And The Data
Introduction The term big data came into the picture to refer the big volumes of information s both the
companies and governments are storing. The data may be where we live, where we go, what we buy
and what we say etc. all will be recorded and stored forever. More than 90% of data is generated in the
past 2 years only and this volume is increasing day by day and doubling for every two years. In this
world, the organizations are using the data generated by us and no one knows what they are doing
with the collected data. Big data is defined as a lot of structured and unstructured data from different
sources, such as E commerce websites, online transactions, social networks, medical records, internet
search indexes, banking and financial services, scientific searches, weblogs, and document searches
and so on. Big data also can be described by four V s: Volume, Velocity, Variety and finally Value.
Volume: The term big data itself tells it is related to size. Big data requires processing of high volumes
of unstructured data such as data from twitter, network traffic etc. The volume of data varies from one
organization to other. Velocity: The term velocity refers to how fast the data is generated and
processed to meet the demands and the challenges in the path of growth and development. Reacting
quickly enough to deal with data velocity is a challenge for most organizations. Variety: Data today
comes in various formats, types, structured, unstructured. For example, the data may

AP Calculus Lessons Of My Life
It was December and near the end of the first semester of my senior year. I sat next to my close friend
Adrian as I helped him understand the last few AP Calculus lessons. The time had reached 4:30 P.M.,
and we d been sitting together in Mr. Brink s room after school for almost two hours. Mr. Brink sat at
his desk while Adrian and I were at a different table. Only the three of us remained in the room.
Eventually, Adrian started to pack up. I gave him a hug as he left, then sat back down. As I looked up,
I made eye contact with my favorite teacher and best friend.
Thank you for helping Adrian today. He said to me.
Of course! I smiled in return.
As strange as it may have sounded, calculus was important to me. Mr. Brink showed me how easy ...

On Earthquakes Essay
On Earthquakes
An earthquake is a shaking or trembling of the crust of the earth caused by underground volcanic
action or by the breaking and shifting of rock beneath the surface. The volcanic action and shifting
rocks create strain which continues to build to a sudden release of pressure resulting in a shock wave.
The vibrations produced in the crust can vary from barely noticeable to enormously destructive. Shock
waves can be classified into two broad categories. Waves that send particles oscillating back and forth
in the same direction as the waves are traveling are called primary. Primary waves, sometimes called
compressional waves, travel through the earth beneath the crust. Secondary ... Show more content on

The modern seismograph was invented early this century by a Russian seismologist, Prince Boris
Golitzyn. This device made possible the modern era of earthquake research.
Although earthquakes have occurred and affected mankind for as long as humans have been around,
historical records are either lacking or considered unreliable before the middle of the 18th century.
However, some records do exist and date major earthquake events back to 425 BC when one occurred
off the coast of Greece resulting in an island named Euboea. Another occurred in Asia Minor about
AD 17 and another leveled much of the Roman city of Pompeii in AD 63. During the Middle Ages,
severe earthquakes struck England, in 1318; Naples, Italy, in 1456; and Lisbon, Portugal, in 1531.
Casualties from major earthquakes have resulted in the greatest disasters in history. The worst
occurred in 1556 in the Shannxi (Shensi) Province in China and killed an estimated 800,000 people.
During the 18th century, the Japanese city of Edo (site of modern day Tokyo) was struck and killed
200,000. Earthquakes in Sicily in 1693 and Lisbon in 1755 each killed about 60,000 people. In 1797,
approximately 40,000 died when Quito, Ecuador was struck.
Historically, the most powerful earthquakes to strike North America occurred in 1811 and 1812 in
southeastern Missouri. However, the most famous earthquake to strike in North America

E-Learning In Education Essay
Information Technology has been praised in certain areas and deemed as a catalyst for rethinking
teaching practices in the education sector (Flecknoe, 2002; Mcormick Scrimshaw, 2001), developing
favored graduates and citizens required in today s information society (Department of education,
2001).
The field of education globally has been affected by ICT in one way or another which has affected
teaching, learning, and research (Yusuf, 2005). ICT has the potential to accelerate and deepen the
skills to motivate and engage students to work practices and create economic viability for tomorrow s
workers (Davis and Tearle, 1999; Lemke and Coughlin, 1998; cited by Yusuf, 2005). e learning can be
branched out into different areas such as:
The use of different elements such as words, spoken text, illustrations and pictures to deliver content
May be instructor led learning also known as synchronous learning where a digital device can be
mobilized and introduced to the classroom
Self paced learning also known as synchronous learning which uses devices and enables learners to
learn at their own pace
Virtual classrooms where learners can attend a classroom session based in a different location from the
facilitator
Based on the rapid change of technology, much of what we are seeing today as a form of e learning is
not fairly new. Computer training known as computer based training has been around for more than 40
years however this was not mobile (Clark; Mayer, 2008)

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Nop Phone Service

Chapter 8
Advantages
VoIP phone service providers o er many advantages to the residential and small oce/home oce
user. If you have a high speed internet connection then choosing a VoIP phone service might be right
for you.
1. Low Cost :
This technology leads to greater nancial savings. This happens because there exists only one
network carrying the voice and video provided by only one supplier. If you have a broad band Internet
connection (DSL or cable), you can make PCtoPC phone calls anywhere in the world for free. If you
wish to make a PC to phone connection, there s usually a charge for this but probably much cheaper
than your regular phone service. You can pay as you go or you can sign up with a VOIP service
provider and pay a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Low Taxes :
Since the calls are being carried over the Internet, governments have not heavily taxed VoIP phone
services. Compare that to your local telephone bill (go ahead and take a close look) and you will see
you are spending quite a bit on taxes each month. Therefore, choosing a
VoIP provider could add up to signi cant savings for you and your family.
3. Portability :
One important concept to understand about VoIP is that unlike its forefathers (lets call them
PSTN for now), it is not distance or location dependent. As far as VoIP is concerned, you could be
calling your supplier 1,000 miles away in Indonesia or calling your business partner on the other end
of town, and it doesnt make any di erence at all, in terms of connectivity and cost. You can make and
receive phone calls wherever there is a broadband connection simply by signing in to your VoIP
account. This makes VoIP as convenient as email if you are traveling, simply pack a headset or
Internet phone and you can talk to your family or business associates for almost nothing.
4. No extra cables, no extra cost :
A VoIP phone number, unlike your regular phone number, is completely portable. Most commonly
referred to as a virtual number, you can take it with you anywhere you go.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Speech To Baseball
Seventy three years ago, on July 4th, a man whose skillset lied on the baseball field, much rather than
in speechmaking, delivered one of the most effective and inspiring speeches of all time. His name was
Lou Gehrig, and in the matter of approximately two minutes, he managed to reflect not only his own
thoughts of his disease and retirement from baseball, but also the thoughts and mindsets of his fans
and the American people during the 1930s. Lou Gehrig s farewell speech, famously including the
aforementioned quote, drew upon many rhetorical strategies in order to convey themes and emotions
that, especially during the time period, were extremely important to his fans and all people. Gehrig
heavily utilized ethos and pathos to argue his point, and it was these two rhetorical appeals combined
that allowed him to establish himself as a humble and thankful man who considered himself nothing
but lucky to have been given the opportunities in life that he had been given. The backdrop of Lou
Gehrig s speech is extremely important in considering why his speech was so rhetorically effective. As
mentioned previously, the speech was delivered seventy three years ago, in 1939. At this time, the
country was slowly recovering from the Great Depression and war was imminent in Europe. It was a
testing time for the American people, so just to relax and enjoy themselves, people went to baseball
games. People looked up to these baseball players and it was through them that they could get

Snyder s 300 Hyperbole
Film is a source of entertainment for thousands of people, however it can also be seen as modern
poetry. Two examples of poetry in film is Snyder s 300 (2006) and Weir s Gallipoli (1981),
Both films have a theme of War one that glorifies it and the other denounces it. Despite the films being
different in genre and mood, both films have strong poetic devices such as hyperbole, symbolism and
repetition.
During Snyder s 300 many forms of hyperbole were used to portray the Glory of War which is the
main theme for the film. An example of hyperbole, which is noticeable throughout the entire film, is
the enhanced colouring to make the figures and scenes appear like a graphic novel. This is because the
original story line was based on Frank Millar s 300 graphic novel series. The end half of the movie
used exaggerated features more often, from the beast like features on Persia s fighters to Leonidas war
cry nearing the end of the final battle. The directors have used this poetic device to create a stronger
sense of emotion for the film.
Weir s Gallipoli had less hyperbole than Snyder s 300, however still used many of the basic aspects to
make the film a form of poetry. When hyperbole was used in the film is was usually before the main
character Archie started running where he was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

introduction Leonidas was being taught how to fight and how glorious it was to die for the protection

passed down to him. In the final battle Leonidas dropped his shield in order to through his spear at
Xerces in order to prove his statement of Even Gods can bleed. Throughout the entire film the no
mercy attitude of the Spartans was displayed as a sign that these warriors would be far more brutal

The New Woman in Fanu s Carmilla, Stoker s Dracula, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The correlation between the vampire, a figure that is usually regarded as the subject of social
ostracism, and the New Woman, the advent of which was feared by the majority of the British
Victorian patriarchy, was a prominent aspect of much mid to late Victorian era literature.
Supplementary evidence to support the compelling Victorian era literary connection between the
vampire and the New Woman can be extrapolated from the unique gender role standards that defined
that socially complex era. As Catherine Siemann suggests in her essay, Darkness Falls on the Endless
Summer: Buffy as Gidget for the Fin de Siecle, the Victorian New Woman s personal ... Show more

In order to reinforce as loudly and clearly as possible the patriarchal message that in Victorian society,
New Women were to be regarded as social pariahs, the ultimate destruction of these literary characters
had to be performed in the most savage manner feasible, the brutality of which is almost beyond
belief. In Carmilla, prior to her slaughter, the male characters, representative of the Victorian
patriarchy, dehumanize the vampire Carmilla, by no longer referring to her by name; Carmilla is
simply reduced to being referred to as the vampire and the body. Dehumanization eliminates Carmilla
s individuality, metaphorically suggesting that her fate is the destiny that awaits all New Women.
Carmilla s execution is described as follows:
The body, therefore, in accordance with the ancient practice, was raised, and a sharp stake driven
through the heart of the vampire, who uttered a piercing shriek at the moment, in all respects such as
might escape from a living person in the last agony. Then the head was struck off, and a torrent of
blood flowed from the severed neck. The body and head were next placed on a pile of wood, and
reduced to ashes, which were thrown upon the river and borne away, and that territory has never since
been plagued by the visits of a vampire. (Le Fanu 336)

Review Of Jacob Riis s Muckraker
This is a chapter of a book was written by Jacob Riis, who was a muckraking journalist. Muckraker
was a journalist who pushed for reform in publications that covered the issues of society for the
middle and wealthy classes. In this book, Riis made a photographic report about the life of poor
people in the tenements of New York. In the beginning, Riis described a raid which was made by
policemen. The object of that raid was the stale beer dives. He said that the squads sent to make
simultaneous control on all tramp s lair in the area. After that, they caught several tramps and sent
them to the police station. Then, Riis described a room of one tenement. There was a dirty floor,
broken chair, and many things that it shouldn t in the memory of the man. In that place, there was a
group of poor people. The policemen broke into that room and surrounded those people. There was a
thirteen person in that dirty room. The police took them and went to another location. In another
location, the policemen found seventy five men and women and arrested them in four small rooms.
When they went back to the police station, there were two hundred seventy five tramps, who were
captured by policemen, packed them into groups to be arraigned in the police court. He said that the
tramps might be sent to an island for six months. After that, he described the people s life in that area
which known as the bend . He said that a share of stale beer traffic has left the bend due to an Italian

The Big Field Essay
Pete Rose once said You d be surprised how many shortcomings can be overcome by hustle. This
means that your doubt, laziness which are shortcoming s can all be overcome by hard work and hustle.
In the book the Big Field the lesson is working hard to get what you want. In this quote Hutch said I
will never give you that spot Darryl this quote is one of the most important quotes in this book. It so
important because throughout the book Hutch is working hard for this position, and because he wants
it, they fight over it the boys barley even talk to each other because of this. The coach in the book said
if you want to be on the field work hard day in and day out. The coach said only the hardest workers
will get to play on the team. This book defiantly relates to teens today I would recommend this to
teens personally. It relates to teens because teens in high school, playing sports have to work hard to
be on the teams. Since I started playing for the high school its a lot more work than playing ball as a
kid. You have to work really hard to be on the team and to get better. The team had to work out over

Comparative Proteomics: Protein Profiler Lab by Jonathan Thulson

INTRODUCTION Proteomics is the study of proteins. Their functions, interactions with other
proteins, cellular locations and levels at which they are expressed. The purpose of this lab was to
compare the proteins present in different species of fish to be able to determine which species of fish
have the closest relation. This can be determined based on which two fish species have the most
proteins in common with one another. The Central Dogma of biology is a process in which a gene
made of DNA is transcribed by a messenger RNA and then translated into a protein. Based on the

The proteins are also added to a Laemmli sample buffer in order to give each protein a negative charge
so it is able to get pulled through the polyacrylamide gel. The next step is to put the gel into the
electrophoresis module and to run it. It is run until the proteins have almost reached the bottom of the
gel. A blue tracking dye is added to the Laemmli sample buffer in order to track the distance in which
the proteins travel through the gel. If it is run for too long, the proteins will run off the bottom of the
gel and it will mess up your results. Once the protein reach the bottom of the gel, the gel is stained in
order to be able to see the individual bands of the different proteins. When the gel is stained, the
protein distances will be able to be measured and compared. For a detailed procedure, refer to the
Comparative Proteomics Kit I: Protein Profiler Module Lab Manual.
RESULTS
I did not get conclusive data from the gel I made. As you can see in figure 1, the bands that showed up
on the gel were too cluttered to be able to measure them. So I could not compare protein bands
between the fish species based on our gel. Instead, I used a default gel picture that another group did
in the class to get my data. From their gel I was able to compare the different species. Table 1 shows
the number of bands that were similar between the different fish species when they were compared. I
was able to determine that fish species C (Tuna)

Explain How To Teach Children To Swim
To teach children to swim, you will need a pool and patience. Lessons are taught by lifeguards, as well
as by individuals in the community. Swimming is a helpful skill to learn for people as it is great
exercise and fun to do. This can be a frustrating job but is worth the trouble. The first thing to teach
children is to put their face in water and blow out of their nose. This is vital to teach early on in order
for them to grasp the concept that they will not get water in their nose. They really have to figure that
out for themselves, but you must in order to guide them in the right direction. Still during day one, you
should have the child sit on the side of the pool and learn how to effectively kick. This is done by

These skills can be life saving in some circumstances. To teach the child how to float on their back,
you should use a noodle under either the back or under the arms to start. The child will be scared at

should help the by getting their body in the right place by getting them to move their legs as if they
were slowly riding a bicycle. After they are comfortable, remove the noodle carefully. It will take a
few tries for this to be successful as the child is alarmed by their support being removed. Once
learned, floating on the back is a relaxing a life saving skill to obtain. Treading is a more tiring activity
but is important nonetheless. To teach this, you should be in an area of the water that the child can
touch but is not halfway out of the water. You should explain to the individual that they should move
their legs like they are riding a bike in the water. The arms should move around in circles to help. This
should be a relatively easy thing to learn once the child can swim fairly well and the child is

Taylorism or Scientific Management Principles at Ford...
The central theme of this essay will deal with the role of Taylorism or scientific management in a
specific organization. The primary focus will be to critically discuss how the various methods of
scientific management are applicable to the chosen organization, which in this case will be Ford
Motors. The essay will describe F.W. Taylor s early work life and techniques of scientific management
and its success. It will then go on to discuss the production methods at Ford Motors prior and post the
application of the management principles along with their benefits and criticisms.
As the popularity of systematic management rose, there were many organizations that were

This would not only be advantageous for the employer but also the employee since it would result in
higher wages. Due to this, the worker s level of motivation and drive to do better would escalate
leading to overall productivity of the organization (Salimath and Jones, 2011, p.88).
Taylor furthermore emphasized on this method as it reduced the time taken between each activity
since each worker was limited to doing a precise task. Thus, the worker was able to complete the job
in the least possible time and reduce wastage. Along with improved efficiency, Taylor used scientific
management techniques to make sure proper utilization of resources is taking place and wastage is
being kept to a minimum (Salimath and Jones, 2011, pp. 85 86).
Taylorism can be seen as an evident feature in several production based industries especially
organizations specializing in automotive manufacturing. One of the key practitioners of Taylor s
management principles was Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company.
Initially at Ford motors, production used to take place by keeping the vehicle at one position and
making the workers move in and about gathering the several parts together. This method unfortunately
was a very tedious and time consuming process. In view of this fact, Henry Ford appointed Taylor to
monitor the operations taking place. Ford applied the scientific management

The players in this segment are likely to be the larger international construction contractors like
Conmaco and Raymond International, as well as larger independent pile driving firms. The market can
be segmented by benefit because there are those consumers or purchase influencers who look at the
impact the pads can have from an engineering standpoint. Because CMI pads transfer the energy from
the pile more efficiently they were less likely to result in damage to the pile that may affect the
integrity of the foundation. The players that would be in this segment would be the architectural and
consulting groups, as well as the more sophisticated of the larger engineering/construction contractors.
There is a second benefit segment that you can identify as well. This group would be defined by there

segment, and would be more likely to choose the CMI pads. This segment would be harder to identify
because they would be spread out amongst the different size firms. It is likely that at the time of the

Helium Synthesis
The first process every star goes through before its end is the process of their core shrinking. When
stars of at least .4 M begin to exhaust their hydrogen supply, the hydrogen starts to fuse in a shell that
is outside the helium core. As the shell burns more hydrogen it is also producing more helium, this
allows the core to increase in its mass and temperature. When the temperature increases greatly,
helium fusion begins to start in what is called a helium flash, causing the star to rapidly decrease in its
size and increase its temperature. Once the star has fused all of the helium out of its core, the product
of the carbon will fuse which produces a hot core along with the outer shell made up of fusing helium.

Corruption In George Orwell s Animal Farm
In every society, power and regulation is necessary in ensuring an established population. Without
leaders who have jurisdiction and administrative power, chaos and disorder can break loose. However,
what if this power is given to leaders who will not stop the chaos, but only create it? What if the
possession of absolute power creates leaders who do not fear whether their people suffer, but instead
only fear the loss of their position as absolute? This idea, that power can corrupt, is prominent in the
Fairy Story, Animal Farm written by George Orwell. Though this idea is not expressed directly to
readers, Orwell s use of symbolism plays a major role in allowing readers to successfully understand
that power can corrupt. The building of Animal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Initially, the purpose of building a windmill is to make the animals lives easier. Snowball argues of the
benefits a windmill would bring the animals, declaring that so much labor would be saved that the
animals would only need to work three days a week (Orwell, 33). Through this declaration, Snowball
argues that through the introduction of industrialization on the farm, the amount of strenuous labor the
animals experienced would decrease, allowing them to live easier lifestyles. However, as the story
progresses, and the animals workload only increases in order to build the windmill, readers are able to
understand that the benefits of the windmill and a lifestyle of ease will not be attained by all the
animals, but only by the pigs. All that year the animals worked like slaves. But they were happy in
their work, they grudged no effort or sacrifice, well aware that everything that they did was for the
benefit of themselves, and those of their kind who would come after them, and not for a pack of idle
thieving human beings (Orwell, 40). Through this quote, the animals express their feelings towards the
windmill, viewing it as a symbol of freedom from their human oppressors and their blind acceptance
of their current state of suffering. Believing that the windmills produce will someday benefit
themselves, the animals

Definition And Explanation Of The Business Purpose Of An...
Definition and explanation of the business purpose of presentation: 1.1 Establish the business purpose
of the presentation. I have to plan a strategic analysis of AIS from my point of view. I have to deliver
this presentation to my fellow students and to one member of staff at AIS. I have to show this strategic
analysis of AIS with the help of strengths and weakness of AIS that it faces from inside and the
opportunities and threats that it faces from outside. I want to include marketing, business planning,
business reporting, education and goals of an organization as the business purpose of the organization.
Marketing At present AIS is targeting students mostly from India. We can see Indian students in AIS
on a large number. In my view, they have to target other countries as well to get more profit and to
increase the marketing. Moreover it will create multicultural environment in AIS. Business planning
Business planning is done by the top managers and the direct marketing managers. It also includes the
workers of AIS as well. AIS have to do perfect planning to get good results. Business reporting In this
presentation, I will show how business reporting has done in AIS. Business reporting in AIS is done
by campus managers. There are three campuses of AIS that is Auckland, Christchurch and Hastings.
The campus manager of Auckland is Vijender Naresh and campus manager of Hastings is Hardeep
Singh. They all link with owners for the reporting. The business reporting has

Port Prospect
The city of Port Prospect, which has around 50,000 inhabitants decided to follow the privatization
path by contracting out the majority of its services. The city Of Port Prospect now is ready to analyze
two different possibilities to privatize itself. Denhardt Denhardt (2015) the public administrator
accepts internal benchmarks as the reflections of its own decisions. Public serves also is sensitive and
reactive about he influence that he has on his job as well as the impact within the community (pg.7).
On this particular case the City of Port Prospect s major should comply with the premise that Denhardt
refers to in order to fulfill its main duties as well as comply with the community s needs. According
Denhardt (2015) public servers should be held accountable to institution s standards, public interest,

This specific measure could provide efficient services to the city like in the case of Sandy Springs.
The city of Sandy Springs has successfully incorporated in 2005 to a company named CH2 HILL .As
a result the city of Sandy Springs does not have current liabilities and its services have met standards
of efficiency. Based on that premise the contractor has overseen the process and that the bids with
subcontractors were essentially offering prime services. Furthermore, CH2 Hill has also implemented
a system where customer service hot lines is offered 24/7 and complaints were resolved and address
accordingly without any red tape (ReasonTV,2011). Having the example of Sandy Spring it is evident
that the premise of contracting a company to take over the subcontractors hiring as well as all services
provided should be the best case scenario to take advantage of the privatization model

Religious Persecution of Christian Beliefs
Religious Persecution of Christian Beliefs What is religious persecution? At the beginning of this
project, I thought religious persecution was a black and white topic with a clear definition. I thought
that religious persecution was simply the persecution of a group because of their religious faith.
However, I discovered that there are no simple explanations of religious persecution, and it is a much
more complex and controversial issue than I had imagined. In fact, some events categorized as
religious persecution reveal only shades of grey and ambiguities and do not neatly fit this simple
definition. I wanted others to come to this same understanding. Therefore, I have formulated my own
definition of religious persecution. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Persecution of Christians because of their faith is a major problem in the United States. Sixty one

are martyred, two million are being actively persecuted, and millions more are living with their
religious freedoms severely restricted. Religions make claims about the nature of the world, the origin
of man, the means of salvation, and so on. The Constitutional freedom of religion gives citizens the
right to believe these claims, and freedom of speech gives them the right to make these claims
publicly. Freedom of religion is not a prize for governments to award

Analysis Of Before The Law By Jennifer Gonnerman
In Before The Law , an article written by Jennifer Gonnerman published in The New Yorker, the
dispiriting true story of a teen from the Bronx is used as a precedent to highlight the glaring problems
with New York City s criminal justice system. In May of 2010, sixteen year old Kalief Browder and
his friends were arrested on robbery charges after returning home from a party in the Bronx. The
ensuing events led him in and out of holding cells, granted him a bail of three thousand dollars (which
his family was unable to afford), and eventually led to him being transferred to the infamous Rikers
Island; Where, despite never being convicted of any crime (let alone receiving a fair trial), he was
imprisoned for nearly four years. Gonnerman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this includes Gonnerman describing Browder s realization that he was not going to be
released after his wrongful arrest, or detailing his feeling of panic as he was transported to Rikers on a
prison bus.
Gonnerman appeals to the logic of the reader by following Browder s anecdotes with supportive
statistics and investigative findings from reputable sources. She uses the citation of evidence to give
weight and help expand on the context of Browder s experiences. This includes the excerpts of
statistical information from studies, such as in 2011 seventy four percent of felony cases in the Bronx
were older than six months , which reinforces Browder s personal experience with the Bronx court
system and also clearly indicates that Browder s circumstance is not an uncommon one. This also
includes the citation of the court index card s text, reading the list of the preposterous amount of
delays requested by the prosecutor, which provides tangible and explicit evidence to the reader of the
dysfunctionality of the Bronx s court system, and also helps the reader empathize with Browder s
frustration.
Perhaps the most powerful of these appeals to logic would be the citation of the Sixth Amendment of

Women And The Spartan Women
Throughout ancient human history, men and women held vastly different roles. Women were often
given the duty of bearing and raising children, whereas men were expected to fight, provide an
income, and protect the household. Women were seen as totally inferior to men and described by
Euripedes as a curse to mankind and a plague worse than fire or any viper. However, this misogynistic
view of women and designated role of inferiority was not apparent in every ancient civilization. The
role of the female in ancient Greek history can best be explored and contrasted between two important
civilizations: The Spartans and the Athenians. The Spartan women were incredibly advanced for their
time, and the Athenian women were drastically far behind. Both the Spartan and Athenian women held
roles at home and lived lives far removed from the men of their societies. However, their lives were
much different. While the Spartan women were strong and educated, the Athenian women held a
status almost equal to slavery. The Spartan women were far more advanced than Athenians in aspects
of life including education, athleticism, and independence. In no other city state did women enjoy the
same freedom and status as Spartan women. As a military driven society, the Spartans realized that
regardless of gender all Spartiates had an obligation to serve the militaristic end of Sparta. With this
focus in mind, women were allowed more freedom, rights, and independence. Spartan women were

Cars In America

humans greatest inventions. At the same time has been considered cars to be a problem, because of the
pollution, smog and the accidents caused by young people. Like in America there are too many
problems in relation to cars in too many parts of the world. For example there s Germany, France and
Colombia. First there s Vauban, Germany were accorded to the article the 70 percent of the population
does not have a car and the 57 percent sold it to live there. It is curious the way people feel relief
without having a car instead of being stressed. Many people in America would be going crazy because
is essential to have a car in the daily American life. This is a nice idea because in the article says that

At the same time Paris kind of harm Diesel and other transport and delivery companies. Plus they
make the economy a little bit weaker. They should prepare themselves much more, because it is a
really good initiative movement. But that doesn t mean that the same government is the one who allow
those things. They allow ecological laws, and non natural laws. Then is Bogota, Colombia, all this is
true, most of the time is this way. People is too poor to have a car. At the same time this helps in a lot
of ways, is ecological and doesn t weakens the economy because is only in one day. One of the best
parts is that other parts of Colombia are joining into it, and making of the planet a better place
together. Not only from Colombia, from other parts of South America too, for example Asuncion,
Paraguay. Also the government is actually helping the population and making it more comfortable for
them. So like that they don t have to complicate themselves too

  • 3. Audit Risk in the Brave New World Audit amp; taxation | Audit Risk in the Brave New World | Audit Risk Model | | | 6/27/2010 | Submitted To: MR. Asim Khan Submitted By Bilal Khalid INTRODUCTION The audit risk model has provided a conceptual framework for auditing practice for more than 40 years. Despite practical difficulties in implementation and criticisms of its theoretical foundation, the model has been fairly effective in helping auditors analyze risks and use that analysis to determine the nature, timing, and extent of audit procedures (especially substantive procedures) in audits of financial statements. The audit risk model provides a conceptual framework for the risk assessment standards. In recent years, auditors have tried to apply the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are: * ISA 315, Understanding the Entity and its Environment and Assessing the Risks of Material Misstatements * ISA 330, The Auditor s Procedures in Response to Assessed Risks * ISA 500 (Revised), Audit Evidence. The requirements in these newly issued risk standards represent significant changes to the standards governing audits of financial statements. They enable the auditors to focus more clearly on areas where there is a greater risk of misstatement of the financial statements. The belief is that these risk standards will increase audit quality. This is as a result of better risk assessments through a more detailed understanding of the entity and its environment, including internal control, and improved design and performance of audit procedures to respond to assessed risks of material misstatements. The improved linkage of audit procedures and assessed risks is expected to result in a greater concentration of audit effort on areas where there is a greater risk of material misstatements. The scope of each of the risk standards is reflected in the introduction to the standards, and can be summarized as follows. ISA 315 This standard provides guidance on performing audit procedures to obtain a broader understanding of the entity and its environment, including its internal control, and on assessing risks of material misstatement. The IAASB recognises that there may be specific considerations relevant to the audit of small ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Changing Hierarchies in Early America Essay Changing Hierarchies in Early America In A Model of Christian Charity, John Winthrop proposes to change the existing social and economic hierarchy. The old world social hierarchy divided the classes based on wealth and property. The highest class consisted of the king and royal family, then followed by the bishops. Next on the hierarchy were the nobles, gentlemen, and the wealthy. And at the bottom of the hierarchy of course, were the poor. Because of this extreme division, there was no middle ground between the wealthy and poor. That is, the old world hierarchy allowed the rich to hold power over the poor. The poor would live and work on the land in exchange for protection from the wealthy. In other words, the poor had to work as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you love someone, they will love you back. This will of course lead to a better economy and society. When people love each other, they are able to step beyond the divisions placed on them by society. If people are willing to step past those divisions and aid each other, then the class systems become unimportant. This mobility will bring the rich closer to the poor while at the same time allowing the poor to rise higher to the level of the rich. In addition, Winthrop explains that if people love each other, that God will delight to dwell among ... His own people (158). In other words, the presence of God will encourage them in being successful. Then the ideals of the Massachusetts Bay Colony will spread, along with the concept of God s love. Even though Winthrop began his argument by affirming the old world social hierarchy, by the end of his sermon he has created a community of love. Winthrop s steps set up an ideal, harmonious Christian community, mostly free of the divisions caused by social differences. This is remarkable because he is changing the ideals for the new world. A community of love is the beginning of a republic. Winthrop is setting up Americans to create a democratic society by instilling in everyone the concept of the community of love. Anne Bradstreet also wanted to create a community of love. However, she takes Winthrop s idea of a community of love a step further. In addition to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Raising Tuition Rates Raising Tuition Rates Tuition rates have been rising exponentially since World War II and the GI Bill... which allowed for, ...an explosive increase in the number and proportion of Americans who go to college (Nathan 148). This change, though largely due to inflation, has been rising past what families can afford to pay, and has led to difficulties for students exiting high school. These difficulties have been seen by campuses, and many already have a plan to help these students pay for the rocketing tuition prices. This escalating problem has been caused by multiple entities, individuals, and ideals. Firstly, between 1985 and 1995, the federal and state funding has decreased by almost twenty five percent, and since then has decreased to account for only fifty percent of the public university s budget, as more of the government s money has been allotted to the needs of the country s healthcare, welfare, and prisons. Also, universities have increased the percentage of their budgets allocated to administration roles, mostly in an attempt to influence government and to market their degree and certificate programs (Nathan 149). Furthermore, a study performed by, William Bowen, now president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, attributed tuition rising faster than the rate of inflation primarily to the nature of the educational process, which did not permit academia to share in the productivity gains that caused earnings growth in the rest of society... and to the Winner Take ... • 6. Economic Effects Of The Market Revolution The major change in the American economy was people began to exchange goods rather than make them for themselves. Especially, Western settlers in isolated areas needed ways to transport their goods to distant markets. The Market Revolution was an economic transformation of America. It was a dramatic change in labor and production, which made easy transportation and fast communication across the country. There were many improvements occurred which included an improved production of cotton, lowered transportation costs to make it easier to sell things, allowed women to go to work outside, and protected contract rights. The Market Revolution all started with the cotton gin, which was an important part of the revolution beginning in 1815 of Eli Whitney. During the seventeenth century, Americans were in need of cotton even though they had the ability to build textile factories. The planters grew cotton, but it had wasted efforts of labors. It took a day of a slave of just separating one pound cotton. The cotton gin changed all of this. It revolutionized agriculture making a cotton economy by speeding up the process of removing cottonseeds from fibers, which allowed a labor to make fifty pounds of cotton per day and farmers could plant cotton. By the middle of the nineteenth century, cotton had become a major export crop in America and opening cotton production into new areas. Disabilities Rights Movement Research Paper After watching, videos, going over the material, and doing some research about the disabilities rights movement I found it sad that people have fought so long and hard to get the rights there are now for people with disabilities, the rights that should be unspoken and come naturally, not have to be fought for. The opening of the American School for the Deaf happened in 1817 in Hartford Connecticut. This was an important event. This was the first School for children with disabilities in the western part of the world. I believe this opened the door for the possibility of more children with disabilities to go to school. This school started to help some people see that these children could learn and succeed with the right help and support. Maybe people of this decade were afraid of peoples differences therefore didn t want to acknowledge they may be able to learn and be a contributing person to society. • 11. Maturity In Tom Sawyer Throughout multiple exciting adventures and dangerous explorations in the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , we see Tom Sawyer mature. He matures through the love of Aunt Polly, Becky, Huck and other characters in the novel. In his search for treasure, Tom learns about personal accountability. Even in everyday life, we watch him develop from a boy into an adult. From a selfish young, mischievous lad, Tom becomes a sincere, kind and responsible young man. Before we continue, we should discuss what maturity is. According to Wikipedia, the definition of maturity is a psychological term used to indicate that a person responds to the circumstances or environment in an appropriate and adaptive manner. This response is generally learned rather than instinctual, and is not determined by one s age. Maturity also encompasses awareness of the correct time and place to behave, knowing when to act with appropriate emotion for the situation. Maturity incorporates personal accountability, meaning you take ownership of situations you are involved in. By following one s conscience, you are taking personal accountability. During the adventures of Huck and Tom s treasure hunting, the two came across the antagonist, Injun Joe. Earlier, Huck and Tom witnessed Injun Joe murder a doctor and put the blame on an innocent man. The two juvenile boys had made a vow that neither of them would tell anyone since they were scared that Injun Joe would come after them. This shows fear that most people would experience in this situation. Knowing that an innocent man will be punished for an act he did not commit, Tom s conscience convinced him to testify against Injun Joe, freeing a guiltless man. Critics... view incidents such as Tom s encounters with Injun Joe...as confrontations between innocence and evil which initiate Tom into the world of adult responsibilities and consequences. Near the beginning of the book, Tom falls in love with a beautiful young girl, Becky. The relationship that Tom and Becky shared is very childish and immature. When Tom mentions his past girlfriend, Becky gets super emotional and upset because she thinks Tom is still in love with her. Tom also claims that he will marry Betty even though ... Current laboratory based bacterial detection and identification techniques often require long procedures, provide low sensitivity and specificity as well as slow turnaround times. These conventional techniques include microscopy, culturing bacteria, polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and biochemical assays. There is a heavy emphasis on developing new biosensors to overcome these prominent drawbacks. An ideal biosensor would provide a detection sensitivity less than 103 CFU/ml within minutes, distinguish between serotypes of bacteria in complex environments, be compact and portable, require ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These methods allow for quantitative and kinetic measurements of interactions and often measure refractive index changes, which determines the sample concentration or surface density. [7] Traditionally, label free techniques were not highly sensitive due to the lack of signal amplification which would be provided by a label. However, there have been advancements in this field that will be discussed which have provided label free biosensors with high sensitivities. For specific sensing applications, it is desirable to have the bacterial detection sensor immobilized rather than suspended in solutions. Immobilisation allows the static sensor component to be washed and re used, thus decreasing the long term cost to the user. These sensor surfaces are commonly designed to resist fouling and non specific interactions, as well as provide a permanent attachment of the sensing components without negating the sensing capabilities. Without immobilization of the sensing components, the systems often leave the sample contaminated with the sensing components. Depending on the hazard levels and toxicity of the sample post detection, it could require waste disposal protocols which are inconvenient, expensive and reduce the probability of wide scale implementation of the detection method. The Call of Duty: Black Ops ad is pretty much a mini action film with neverending gun fire and explosions, jumping from one action packed scene to another. However, instead of soldiers wielding assault rifles, shotguns, handheld missile launchers, etc. there are everyday people, hinting at the title of the ad There s a Soldier in All of Us. It was greatly anticipated that the Call of Duty: Black Ops commercial ad would exhibit the same qualities as the videogame itself. The Call of Duty: Black Ops There s a soldier in All of Us ad uses a diverse cast, over the top Hollywood style action, and thrilling music to enforce the theme of the ad, creating a mini action movie to appeal to the consumer s need and want to be a part of the action. The Call of Duty: Black Ops ad certainly incorporates the slogan There s a Soldier in All of Us into the ad with a diverse cast. The ad uses a cast of people of different ages, gender, social status, and cultural backgrounds dressed as regular everyday people in place of a cast in soldier uniforms. The Risks Of The Shipping Industry The Risk sources in the Shipping Industry along with current opportunities and future threats to the company s core business Technically, shipping risk can be defined as the measurable liability for any financial loss arising from unforeseen imbalances between the supply and demand for sea transport (Stopford 2009). More specifically, shipowners may face eight different risk types during their operation in the tanker market. These risks can be categorized into the following types (Kavussanos and Visvikis 2006): Business risk: Is the risk generated by volatility in freight rates which cause uncertainty to the shipowner s income, in other words fluctuations in EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes). It depends on the demand and the price of the product sold. It is influenced by (a) freight rates, (b) voyage costs (fuel costs, port charges, canal dues and broking commissions), (c) operating costs (manning, repairs, maintenance, stores, insurance and administration) and finally (d) exchange rates as income is counted in US dollars while costs are counted in current exchange. • 17. Essay about A Rose for Emily Throughout the Eighteen Years of my life I read many interesting short stories. Some stories where more eye catching than others. Furthermore A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner and Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka were not on the top of my list. In my opinion, the stories were eye catching because of how the author made its characters react and respond toward the suspense and eeriness in certain parts of the climax of the stories. For example, in A Rose For Emily the ladies of the community said We did not say she was crazy then. We believed that she had to do that (Faulkner 81) These two lines were said about Emily after the people found out about the death of Emily s father and they knew that she was keeping his body inside of her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Faulkner started to describe Emily as a poor lonely woman that had no one to take care of her. This was due to the reason that her father had died. This set the mood of the story and it made the reader have a certain image of Emily. Emily did not respond to any pity from the community. Her set of mind, as far as I believe, was not caring about what the other people thought. She was still in grief for her father s death. Furthermore, as the story progressed Faulkner started to give glimpses of who Emily really was. The real Emily was starting to show when Emily said I want some poison. I want the best kind. I don t care what kind (Faulkner 82). What Faulkner gave the other side of Emily on this page, it gave the story a twist because it happened randomly. He told us what she was buying, but he did not tell us what she was going to use it. Furthermore he was trying to show that there is a dark side to every person. The response that was caught from this was suspicious in a way that no one seemed to mind what she was really going to use the poison for. Not even when Homer, her crush, had disappeared. On the other hand, Kafka gave his character Gregor a similar twist. Gregor said Oh God, what a strenuous profession I ve chosen traveling day in day out (Kafka 612)! In the beginning of the story Kafka described Gregor as a normal person with an average job. Nevertheless said at the beginning of the story how he found himself transformed into ... Color Analysis in Raised the Red Lantern Essay Color Emphasis in Raise the Red Lantern Chen Ning (Jenny) Yen 58935107 ASIA 355 Professor Rui Wang 23/11/2012 Scholars and film critiques have often regarded the fifth generation film Director, Zhang Yi Mou s films as a visually sensual feast (Zhu 26). The predominant use of the color Red in his highly stylized films: Red Sorghum (1988), Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern (1991) are evidence of his trademark visual style thus leading scholars to critically analyze the symbolic representation of the color. I would argue however, in addition to the prevalent use of red in his art house films, there are several supporting colors (black, white, grey, blue), intertwining with the color red. Zhang seems ... According to Kong, Red in Chinese culture symbolizes luck and popularity and is commonly used in important rituals and ceremonies...the color red is a vital signifier that is often charged with a special ironic power (123). Red is often associated with passion and lust, though the latter is true to this film, the symbolic representation of red amount to sexuality as a means of gaining political power within the Chen household. The dining table scene where 3rd mistress arrives fashionably late dressed in a bright red gown shows that she currently holds the power in the amongst the four mistresses. This power , once acquired comes with the consequence of being objectified under the red light to the master s male gaze. With the financial crisis and outrageous bailouts still fresh in the public consciousness, one of the most respected and imposing investment banking franchises would tackle their problems by transforming from a run and gun investment bank and trading house with a midsize wealth management arm, to a financial services company split almost evenly between retail brokerage, and trading and managing capital for companies and institutions (Salzman, 2014). On Earthquakes Essay On Earthquakes An earthquake is a shaking or trembling of the crust of the earth caused by underground volcanic action or by the breaking and shifting of rock beneath the surface. The volcanic action and shifting rocks create strain which continues to build to a sudden release of pressure resulting in a shock wave. The vibrations produced in the crust can vary from barely noticeable to enormously destructive. Shock waves can be classified into two broad categories. Waves that send particles oscillating back and forth in the same direction as the waves are traveling are called primary. However, some records do exist and date major earthquake events back to 425 BC when one occurred off the coast of Greece resulting in an island named Euboea. Another occurred in Asia Minor about AD 17 and another leveled much of the Roman city of Pompeii in AD 63. During the Middle Ages, severe earthquakes struck England, in 1318; Naples, Italy, in 1456; and Lisbon, Portugal, in 1531. Casualties from major earthquakes have resulted in the greatest disasters in history. The worst occurred in 1556 in the Shannxi (Shensi) Province in China and killed an estimated 800,000 people. During the 18th century, the Japanese city of Edo (site of modern day Tokyo) was struck and killed 200,000. Earthquakes in Sicily in 1693 and Lisbon in 1755 each killed about 60,000 people. Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Speech To Baseball Seventy three years ago, on July 4th, a man whose skillset lied on the baseball field, much rather than in speechmaking, delivered one of the most effective and inspiring speeches of all time. His name was Lou Gehrig, and in the matter of approximately two minutes, he managed to reflect not only his own thoughts of his disease and retirement from baseball, but also the thoughts and mindsets of his fans and the American people during the 1930s. Lou Gehrig s farewell speech, famously including the aforementioned quote, drew upon many rhetorical strategies in order to convey themes and emotions that, especially during the time period, were extremely important to his fans and all people. Gehrig heavily utilized ethos and pathos to argue his point, and it was these two rhetorical appeals combined that allowed him to establish himself as a humble and thankful man who considered himself nothing but lucky to have been given the opportunities in life that he had been given. The backdrop of Lou Gehrig s speech is extremely important in considering why his speech was so rhetorically effective. As mentioned previously, the speech was delivered seventy three years ago, in 1939. At this time, the country was slowly recovering from the Great Depression and war was imminent in Europe. It was a testing time for the American people, so just to relax and enjoy themselves, people went to baseball games. Two examples of poetry in film is Snyder s 300 (2006) and Weir s Gallipoli (1981), Both films have a theme of War one that glorifies it and the other denounces it. Despite the films being different in genre and mood, both films have strong poetic devices such as hyperbole, symbolism and repetition. During Snyder s 300 many forms of hyperbole were used to portray the Glory of War which is the main theme for the film. An example of hyperbole, which is noticeable throughout the entire film, is the enhanced colouring to make the figures and scenes appear like a graphic novel. This is because the original story line was based on Frank Millar s 300 graphic novel series. The end half of the movie used exaggerated features more often, from the beast like features on Persia s fighters to Leonidas war cry nearing the end of the final battle. The directors have used this poetic device to create a stronger sense of emotion for the film. Supplementary evidence to support the compelling Victorian era literary connection between the vampire and the New Woman can be extrapolated from the unique gender role standards that defined that socially complex era. In order to reinforce as loudly and clearly as possible the patriarchal message that in Victorian society, New Women were to be regarded as social pariahs, the ultimate destruction of these literary characters had to be performed in the most savage manner feasible, the brutality of which is almost beyond belief. In Carmilla, prior to her slaughter, the male characters, representative of the Victorian patriarchy, dehumanize the vampire Carmilla, by no longer referring to her by name; Carmilla is simply reduced to being referred to as the vampire and the body. Dehumanization eliminates Carmilla s individuality, metaphorically suggesting that her fate is the destiny that awaits all New Women. Carmilla s execution is described as follows: The body, therefore, in accordance with the ancient practice, was raised, and a sharp stake driven through the heart of the vampire, who uttered a piercing shriek at the moment, in all respects such as might escape from a living person in the last agony. Then the head was struck off, and a torrent of blood flowed from the severed neck. The purpose of this lab was to compare the proteins present in different species of fish to be able to determine which species of fish have the closest relation. The next step is to put the gel into the electrophoresis module and to run it. It is run until the proteins have almost reached the bottom of the gel. A blue tracking dye is added to the Laemmli sample buffer in order to track the distance in which the proteins travel through the gel. If it is run for too long, the proteins will run off the bottom of the gel and it will mess up your results. Once the protein reach the bottom of the gel, the gel is stained in order to be able to see the individual bands of the different proteins. Due to this, the worker s level of motivation and drive to do better would escalate leading to overall productivity of the organization (Salimath and Jones, 2011, p.88). Taylor furthermore emphasized on this method as it reduced the time taken between each activity since each worker was limited to doing a precise task. Thus, the worker was able to complete the job in the least possible time and reduce wastage. Along with improved efficiency, Taylor used scientific management techniques to make sure proper utilization of resources is taking place and wastage is being kept to a minimum (Salimath and Jones, 2011, pp. 85 86). Taylorism can be seen as an evident feature in several production based industries especially organizations specializing in automotive manufacturing. One of the key practitioners of Taylor s management principles was Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company. • 41. Corruption In George Orwell s Animal Farm In every society, power and regulation is necessary in ensuring an established population. Without leaders who have jurisdiction and administrative power, chaos and disorder can break loose. However, what if this power is given to leaders who will not stop the chaos, but only create it? What if the possession of absolute power creates leaders who do not fear whether their people suffer, but instead only fear the loss of their position as absolute? This idea, that power can corrupt, is prominent in the Fairy Story, Animal Farm written by George Orwell. Though this idea is not expressed directly to readers, Orwell s use of symbolism plays a major role in allowing readers to successfully understand that power can corrupt. The building of Animal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Initially, the purpose of building a windmill is to make the animals lives easier. Snowball argues of the benefits a windmill would bring the animals, declaring that so much labor would be saved that the animals would only need to work three days a week (Orwell, 33). Through this declaration, Snowball argues that through the introduction of industrialization on the farm, the amount of strenuous labor the animals experienced would decrease, allowing them to live easier lifestyles. However, as the story progresses, and the animals workload only increases in order to build the windmill, readers are able to understand that the benefits of the windmill and a lifestyle of ease will not be attained by all the animals, but only by the pigs. All that year the animals worked like slaves. But they were happy in their work, they grudged no effort or sacrifice, well aware that everything that they did was for the benefit of themselves, and those of their kind who would come after them, and not for a pack of idle thieving human beings (Orwell, 40). Through this quote, the animals express their feelings towards the windmill, viewing it as a symbol of freedom from their human oppressors and their blind acceptance of their current state of suffering. • 44. Religious Persecution of Christian Beliefs Religious Persecution of Christian Beliefs What is religious persecution? At the beginning of this project, I thought religious persecution was a black and white topic with a clear definition. I thought that religious persecution was simply the persecution of a group because of their religious faith. However, I discovered that there are no simple explanations of religious persecution, and it is a much more complex and controversial issue than I had imagined. In fact, some events categorized as religious persecution reveal only shades of grey and ambiguities and do not neatly fit this simple definition. I wanted others to come to this same understanding. Therefore, I have formulated my own definition of religious persecution. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 45. Analysis Of Before The Law By Jennifer Gonnerman In Before The Law , an article written by Jennifer Gonnerman published in The New Yorker, the dispiriting true story of a teen from the Bronx is used as a precedent to highlight the glaring problems with New York City s criminal justice system. In May of 2010, sixteen year old Kalief Browder and his friends were arrested on robbery charges after returning home from a party in the Bronx. The ensuing events led him in and out of holding cells, granted him a bail of three thousand dollars (which his family was unable to afford), and eventually led to him being transferred to the infamous Rikers Island; Where, despite never being convicted of any crime (let alone receiving a fair trial), he was imprisoned for nearly four years. An example of this includes Gonnerman describing Browder s realization that he was not going to be released after his wrongful arrest, or detailing his feeling of panic as he was transported to Rikers on a prison bus. Gonnerman appeals to the logic of the reader by following Browder s anecdotes with supportive statistics and investigative findings from reputable sources. She uses the citation of evidence to give weight and help expand on the context of Browder s experiences. This includes the excerpts of statistical information from studies, such as in 2011 seventy four percent of felony cases in the Bronx were older than six months , which reinforces Browder s personal experience with the Bronx court system and also clearly indicates that Browder s circumstance is not an uncommon one. This also includes the citation of the court index card s text, reading the list of the preposterous amount of delays requested by the prosecutor, which provides tangible and explicit evidence to the reader of the dysfunctionality of the Bronx s court system, and also helps the reader empathize with Browder s frustration. Perhaps the most powerful of these appeals to logic would be the citation of the Sixth Amendment of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Women And The Spartan Women Throughout ancient human history, men and women held vastly different roles. Women were often given the duty of bearing and raising children, whereas men were expected to fight, provide an income, and protect the household. Women were seen as totally inferior to men and described by Euripedes as a curse to mankind and a plague worse than fire or any viper. However, this misogynistic view of women and designated role of inferiority was not apparent in every ancient civilization. The role of the female in ancient Greek history can best be explored and contrasted between two important civilizations: The Spartans and the Athenians. The Spartan women were incredibly advanced for their time, and the Athenian women were drastically far behind. Both the Spartan and Athenian women held roles at home and lived lives far removed from the men of their societies. However, their lives were much different. While the Spartan women were strong and educated, the Athenian women held a status almost equal to slavery. The Spartan women were far more advanced than Athenians in aspects of life including education, athleticism, and independence. In no other city state did women enjoy the same freedom and status as Spartan women. As a military driven society, the Spartans realized that regardless of gender all Spartiates had an obligation to serve the militaristic end of Sparta. With this focus in mind, women were allowed more freedom, rights, and independence. Spartan women were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
