The Importance Of Thanksgiving During The Renaissance
Before all the delicious Thanksgiving dishes are served, the guests need something to tide them
over. Everyone loves appetizers and starting snacks such as bread rolls and salad. These delicious
appetizers get the meal started and prepare the guests for the much larger dishes that are yet to
come. Food is what the guests mainly look forward to during Thanksgiving, as the get the
festivities started. This is similar to how the Black Deathmarks the beginning of the Renaissance,
and was a major turning point for the time period. The Black Death, also known as the Bubonic
Plaguewas a devastating illness that wiped out nearly one third of Europe s population at the start of
the Renaissance. Even though many people were suffering painful deaths

Of The Muskoseepi Park Skateboare Prairie Skatepark Strategy
Introduction
The Muskoseepi Park Skatepark and Grande Prairie Skatepark Strategy open house was hosted
on October 24th at 6:00 pm in a Muskoseepi Park meeting room facing the proposed expansion
site. This open house is part of the council directed Skateboard Park Strategy to access existing
parks and recommend new areas and designs that will meet current needs and look ten years into
future needs (Grande Prairie Skatepark Strategy, 2017). During this open house participant input on
both locations for future skateparks and designs for the City of Grande Prairie and the two
proposed concept drawings for the Muskoseepi Park Skateboard park were explored. The

For the Muskosseepi Park Expansion piece, participants were encouraged to collaborate on the two
concept designs that were based on initial feedback provided at the July open house. During this
element, consultants explained in detail the possible options for the park and circulated taking
notes of participant desires, likes and dislikes (IAP2 Public Participation Spectrum, 2007). This
element was very interactive and gave each participant a chance to share his or her thoughts and
concerns. The consultants will be re tweaking new elements into the final concept design and be
bringing the proposed model concept for participants to have a 3D model to give final feedback on
prior to the construction phase in spring 2018.
The consultants effectively applied the IAP2 s Code of Ethic for Public Participation Practitioners
and met the role of a practitioner by building trust, respect for communities, defined the publics
role and promoted commitment and advocacy ( IAP2 s Code of Ethic for Public Participation
Practitioners, 2007). Both the consultants and staff were skill and educated on effective
engagement; the presentation was located in an all abilities accessible building that had access to

Benefits Of Imperialism
Imperialism s Benefits
Brodie Talbot
Do the benefits of imperialism outweigh the costs? Yes. Imperialism is the best for the country. The
main reasons that the power of imperialism is important for the United States is because of the land
and resources that each place has, money, and the language and government. The policy of
extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries. (Dictionary Collins,
English 2016) this definition of imperialism describes why it was crucial for the united states to
imperialize other countries.

Similarities Between Memi And Statue Of Gudea
All over the world statues have been a common form of art among many civilizations throughout
history. Two examples of these historical pieces of work would include, The Royal Acquaintances
Memi and Sabu, and Statue of Gudea. According to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2017), the
first sculpture dates back during the fourth dynasty of ancient Egyptbetween 2575 and 2465 BC.
The second statue, according to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2017), which was made of
diorite was created around 2090 BC, during the Neo Sumerian period, near Mesopotamia. Looking
further into the background and composition of these two sculptures it can be found that The Royal
Acquaintances Memi and Sabu, and Statue of Gudea share some characteristics while at the same
time differing in some important details.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, The statue of Memi and Sabu is made of limestone and paint, which is a very pale color.
Then it can be seen that this piece consists of a couple standing side by side; the male on the left
(Memi) has his arm wrapped around the shoulder of the female (Sabu) on the right, who holds a
more oblique gaze (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017). Second, Statue of Gudea, unlike the
other work which is an individual work of art, belongs to a series of diorite statues that were
commissioned by Gudea (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017). This statue made of diorite
contrasts with the previous work with its very dark color. Furthermore, unlike the couple in the
previous work, this sculpture shows an individual man sitting down by himself with his hands
clasped together, which shows a sense of

Death of General Wolfe Essay
Analysis of The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West
In 1770, artist Benjamin Wolfe completed what would become his most controversial and talked
about piece of artwork, an oil on canvas painting titled The Death of General Wolfe, the purpose of
which was to teach a moral lesson. The Death of General Wolfe portrays the Battle of Quebec, but
more specifically it details the moment when Major General James Wolfewas on his deathbed
shortly after the British had driven the French away in victory. Although this piece is considered
to be historical since it details a true event, the details in it prove to be fabricated for the sake of
art. Benjamin West was truly a remarkable artist who required no formal art education to learn how

The fact that the clouds are passing by and opening can represent two things. The first is that it
can be a symbol of General Wolfe, and as the clouds pass over head, his soul will similarly pass
over and die. Second is that the passing clouds can be viewed as a sign of hope that the battle is
now over and people can live peacefully. One other piece of symbolism is the flag behind
General Wolfe, which serves as a directional force. Since it is pointed at both General Wolfe and
the sky, it signifies the fact that Wolfe s soul will go up onto Heaven. The colors in this piece are
instrumental in moving the eye across the piece and drawing attention to specific parts of the
piece. For instance, for the most part, the colors that are used are dark. However, to emphasize
General Wolfe, the focal point in the middle, his outfit is painted in a brighter red and yellow
and the ground beneath him is light as well. Also, in order to allow the eye to glide across the
painting almost all of the soldier s uniforms are red, creating rhythm. One solider, who is
apparently rushing into see Wolfe, is painted in green, which is the complimentary color to red.
The use of complimentary colors brings the eyes attention to the panicked solider, emphasizing
the overall sense of urgency in the piece. The piece is also well balanced and uses appropriate
scales and proportions. Overall I think West was successful in his piece. I admire the

defined as either strong or weak. The strength of an acid or base is determined by the amount of
ionisation. Ionisation is the creation of an ion through the addition or removal of an electron. If
a substance ionises completely, it is referred to as a strong acid. Weaker acids do not ionise
completely in solution; therefore, they are referred to as weak acids. Similarly, a strong base
ionises completely, while weak bases do not. For example, when a strong acid such as

acid is a weak acid as it does not fully ionise when mixed with water. It reacts with water to produce

The Role Of Lady Capulet In Romeo And Juliet
In William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Lady Capulet and the Nurse are responsible for the
deaths of Romeo and Juliet because Lady Capulet is pragmatic and the Nurse is irresponsible.
Lady Capulet s traditional views on love and forcing her daughter to marry Paris are two
examples in which Lady Capulet shows us that being pragmatic was the cause for the lover s
deaths. Compared to Juliet, Lady Capulet is very pragmatic when its comes to views on the
meaning and ideas of love. Her opinion is that the tradition of arranged marriages is correct, as
in that marriage should be arranged by your parents and you should do what you are told. Lady
Capulet instructs Juliet to seek out her future husband at the party and asks her, What say you?
Can you love the gentleman? This night you shall behold him at our feast (1.3.85 100). Lady
Capulet, who married at a young age, offers complete support for her husband s plan for their
daughter, and puts pressure on Juliet to think about Paris as a husband even before Juliet has
begun to think about marriage at all. Considering the fact that a marriage to Paris would bring
increasing social status and wealth for the Capulets, it s reasonable to say that Lady Capulet was
thinking about this situation pragmatically. Assuming that Lady Capulet is still quite young
herself, she should be able to remember her feelings of being forced into an arranged marriage
and use them to persuade Juliet in a different approach. If Lady Capulet had put less pressure on
Juliet to marry Paris or consider the fact that she might not even want to marry for social status
or wealth, Juliet s death might not have taken place in the way it did. When Juliet rebels against
the planned marriage with Paris, she s rebelling against her mother s way of life, and against the
kind of marriage that Lady Capulet learned to suffer through. After Juliet refuses to marry Paris
as her parents wish, Lady Capulet comes in and responds, Talk not to me, for I ll not say a word
Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee (3.5.15). These words express how Lady Capulet is an
irresponsible mother. She declares that she is done with this entire situation showing that she s
ineffectual. There is a major change from the

Egg Freezing After a Cancer Diagnosis
A diagnosis of cancer inspired Victoria to look into egg freezing
Victoria came to Fertility Answers for egg freezing after she was diagnosed with nodular
lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, a rare and slow growing type of Hodgkin
lymphoma. As part of her cancer treatment, she was prescribed Rituxan. Since it s unknown
whether the drug can cause fertility problems, her oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center
recommended that she visit a fertility specialist to find out about egg freezing.

At her first appointment, Victoria met Dr. Storment with her boyfriend and her mother. Speaking
with Dr. Storment about egg freezing immediately put her at ease. According to Victoria, He is so
wonderful. He took the time to answer my millions of questions, and it feels like I ve known him
for a long time.
The consultation with Dr. Storment convinced Victoria that egg freezing was the right move for
her, and she is beginning the process now. After I found out I have cancer, I felt as if I wasn t in
control of my life. Choosing to freeze my eggs made me feel empowered and in charge of my
future. I also knew I d regret it if I didn t do it, said Victoria.
Victoria won t let cancer stop her from becoming a mother
I didn t have much control over the cancer, but I had control over the decision to freeze my eggs
before beginning treatment in hopes of having children one day, said Victoria. She recommends that
other women in her position also consider egg freezing. You can t tell the future, but it s important

challenge? In the beginning of An Astronaut s Guide to Life on Earth, Chris Hadfield says, we
become competent. [...] Astronauts have these qualities [...] because we are taught to view the

Francis Aloysius Phelan s `` Ironweed ``
Events that unfold in a person s life occur because of uncontrollable circumstances around them
as well as their actions. This balance of power of these two forces is never the same with
different people. Thus, people fall into two general categories, those at the mercy of the
uncontrollable and those who exert more control over their lives than outside forces do. Francis
Aloysius Phelan in William Kennedy s novel, Ironweed, falls into this second category. Francis is
a former professional baseball player in his younger days who now finds himself, at fifty eight,
living as a bum in Albany, New York in 1938 during the Great Depression
. Francis life is one filled
with death, destruction and general unhappiness worse than the average person living during the
same time of economic turmoil. Francis situation in his life is one he has little control over in some
areas but controls most of. Francis Phelan s decision making is at fault for his misfortunes.
One reason Francis is mired in abject circumstances is because of his laissez faire attitude with
money. One example of this laid back attitude towards spending money occurs when Francis goes
home after twenty two years and receives ten dollars from his son, Billy. Knowing Francis, this ten
dollars would not last long nor would the purchase be wise. He would not spend it after careful
consideration to survive but would throw it away on a thoughtless splurge on the unnecessary.
Francis does not disappoint by spending most of

A Room with a View and The Remains of the Day are two novels which involve journeys of
physical and spiritual discovery. The main characters of the stories are dissimilar in gender, age and
social status but both experience situations and encounters which challenge their perspectives and
personal values. The authors of these books have both included references to nature and landscape
to emphasize, mirror and reinforce the reactions and emotions of their characters.
They have also used nature and landscape to highlight key events.

Eventually both ladies have their rooms with views and Lucy throws open her windows and admires
the lights dancing over the Arno, in sharp contrast to the cypresses and Apennines, black against
the rising room. This is like a metaphoric opening of Lucy s eyes and mind in preparation for the
adventures which await her. In addition, this black and white vignette is a romantic, idyllic view
of the Arno and is in contrast with the brightly coloured, sunlit scene of the following morning,
which is full of life, movement and noise, as the Italians go about their daily routines and Lucy
views the reality which is about to alter her world for ever.
By comparison, The Remains of the Day is set in the rolling countryside of England between the
two Wars. Stevens is the old butler at Darlington Hall and he has lived his life in service,
metaphorically confined within large, country houses. He has had a sheltered, privileged life,
gaining his knowledge of England from employers, guests, staff and books, especially The
Wonder of England by Mrs Jane Symons. His present employer, Mr Farraday, an American,
observes that you re always locked up in these big houses and encourages Stevens to get out and
see this beautiful country of yours . Stevens begins his journey along routes which surprised him
due to their familiarity . However, he soon experiences a sense of unease mixed with exhilaration as
the surroundings become unrecognizable.

Research Paper On Indoor Christmas Tree
It is quite common to come across a decked up Christmas tree in December.
Where did the idea of the indoor Christmas tree originate?
Several years ago, people believed that ever green trees had a magical element about them. Even
in winter, when all the other trees and were brown and bare, the evergreen tree soon became a
symbol of life and a sure sign that sunshine and spring would soon return, after the dark, cold days
of winter.
Some traditions around the tree Some believe the Christmas tree tradition was started in ancient
times by Jews who used evergreen boughs to decorate their homes during the late autumn feast of

AD. In the 1960 s, scientist found a relationship between cognitive decline and the number of
plaques in the brain. In the 1970 s AD was documented as the most common type of dementia
(Bright Focus Foundation, 2015). In 1984 another ground breaking discovery was made. In
1984 the Beta Amyloid was discovered by George Glenner and Cai ne Wong (Alzheimer s

cells, and genetics coincident, and AD susceptibility. However, the last decade has been crucial to
AD discoveries and experiments. As technology is always improving, scientists are able to push
their limits and experiment more. In 2004, Pittsburgh Compound B (PIB) was created (Alzheimer

Disability In The Age Of Disability
Throughout history, society has attempted to define where disability belongs within the social order
based upon societal interpretation of disability, political context, and economic context. Holistically,
the view and stigma of disability altered through three distinct phases. The earliest thinkers
subscribed to a spiritual model in which disabilitywas believed to be some form of moral
punishment. The onset of the Age of Enlightenment, rather, valued empiricism and experimentation
above supernatural superstition, giving way to the modern interpretation of disability in which
society s institutional roadblocks, negative attitudes, and societal exclusion are the factors which
truly disable some individuals. Specifically, this paper will examine the facets of the first and
second phases as well as the logistics of the shift between them and their effects. Holistically,
Enlightenment thinking shifted the view of disability from moral to medical in nature, laying the
foundation for modern day special educational values. (Atkins and Hayman, 168; Hughes and
Paterson, 325 340) The first lens through which society and intellectuals viewed disability prevailed
from pre historic times until the Age of Enlightenment and largely associated disability with sin and
moral punishment. Neolithic tribes, presumably thriving between 7000 BC and 1700 BC, believed
disability to be caused by evil spirits. Adopting a similar mindset to 19th century medical
professionals who endorsed

Citizens/voters in a hamlet inhabited by only three citizens consider the provision of street light.
The marginal benefit curve of each citizen is downward sloping in the amount of street light
provided. The cost of providing street light consists of erecting lamp posts and the electricity for
illumination. For part a) c) of this question, assume the following: All lamps are switched on
during the hours of darkness such that the cost of providing street light is linear in the number of
lamp posts erected and street light provision is financed by a local poll tax which divides the cost
of providing the light equally among the citizens.

taken in a two step majority voting procedure: In the first round one alternative is put against
another alternative and in the second round the first round winner is put for a vote against the
remaining alternative. The winner of the second round vote is declared overall winner.
ba) For all possible combinations of second round votes over pairs of alternatives, write down
the winning alternative. bb) Write down all possible combinations of pairs of alternatives in the
first round of voting. For each pair do the following: For the first alternative, write down the
overall winning alternative if the first alternative would make it to the second round of voting.
Do the same for the second alternative of the pair. How should voters in the first round of voting
decide between the alternatives they face? cc) If voter 3 is the chair (or agenda setter ) and can
decide which alternatives to put for a vote in the first round of voting: Which pair should she pick?

Blocking Gmo s A Crime Against Humanity
Blocking GMO s A Crime Against Humanity One of the most controversial topics of our time is
GM technology (GMO). Is it safe or not? The emotive nature of this topic is justified considering
the fact that food is paramount to human well being; all claims should be carefully examined.
However, modern scientific studies contradict commonly held opinions opposing GMO s which
are in fact founded on myths and misinformation. There are currently 2000 peer reviewed reports
which document the safety and wholesomeness of GM foods. (Genera.2014) My goal in this
paper is to help open dialogs between activists and the scientific community. Green activists and
privileged world citizens deny life and health to millions when they block the progress and use
of genetic modification. To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into four sections and
two sub sections. I will begin with and brief description and summary of GMO s and the
scientific consensus on the safety and efficacy of this technology, public opinion that contradicts
the science community and the origins of misinformation. Next I will talk about why GMO s are
a major component in solving food insecurity, death, sickness and poverty. In the third section of
this paper involves the efforts of green campaigners who undermine science and block GMO
technology. To conclude, I will provide examples of the reality of food insecurity worldwide and
highlight one significant area to focus resolution efforts, Golden Rice. I

Comparing Olympia And Urbino
In the painting, Olympia receives flowers from a helper who is staring at her, which was very
controversial at the time due to the fact she was completely naked and it was seen as immodest.
The flowers are presumed to be from a client, which gives more evidence to support her being a
prostitute. A black cat is shown standing at Olympia s feet provide a stark contrast to the dog at
Venus of Urbinos. While the dog is laying docilely at her feet, representing loyalty and love, the
cat stands and almost seems to shake in shock and fear, representing secrecy and selfishness. The
only accessories on Olympia are a choker, shoes, flower in her hair, and a bracelet, while Titian s
Urbino only wear a bracelet and earrings presenting a more modest look.... Show more content on

herself the freedom to focus on herself and her afterlife. The speaker is revolutionary in her
autonomy and her acceptance of the ever constant change that pervades human existence. Through

Paper On Charles Eames
One does not think the name Charles Eames without considering his other half Ray Eames. Ranked
among the elite of American designers, they were one of the largest contributors to what we know
as modernism today. their pronouncements on design emphasized the centrality of function in the
use of the technologies of mass production to make quality goods cheaper and more affordable.
Charles was not successful just an architect, also in furniture design, film and exhibition design all
of which brought him international acclaim. They found their most success in furniture design.

He preferred the distinction because of what it implies. It implies a structure, a kind of analysis, as
well as a kind of tradition behind it. In 1945 John Entenza, using his magazine Art Architecture,
started the Case Study Houses Program as part of his attempts to further modernism. The Case
Study Houses aimed to produce contemporary solutions to house design and to offer prototypes
from which low and medium cost housing could be developed. Charles was involved in designing
two Case Study Houses, both located in Pacific Palisades, his own house as well as John Entenza s.
The Eames house was designed with Ray, with initial contributions from Eero, and the second
Entenza house was fabricated through contributions of both Charles and Eero Saarinen. They
created two houses that shared a site, architect, and basic steel frame, but differed completely in
form. They have been called technological twins but architectural opposites.
The Eames house focused on the American Dream of anyone having the ability to own their own
house on their own land. Their original goal to provide low cost housing was starting to develop,
using prefabricated steel to develop one of the first houses of its kind. It reflected so much of
Charles and Ray Eames. In their brief of the house they expressed

Callaway Golf Case Essay
Summary: In 1998, Callaway, one of the most famous brands in the golf domain, has
experienced its first loss of $ 27 million after 10 years of growth. To resolve this problem, Ely
Callaway, the founder of this company, wondered if CGC (Callaway Golf Company) would have
to revise the way it approached retailer relationships to raise more mutually beneficial. To address
possible market confusion, should the communication strategy shift? In fall 1999, Callaway faced
amount of questions; the answers would guide him in refocusing CGC s retail channels, new
product development, and marketingstrategies.

2. Like Nike and Adidas, Callaway has become a well known golf brand that customers have
treated it as a professional sign. So there is difficulty for the new brand to threaten Callaway s
current market.
Power of suppliers:
1. As the case mentioned, Callaway adjusted the wholesale prices of Big Bertha metal woods rather
infrequently because they are confident in their own products with so many efforts on budget and
R D. They strongly believed that after using the products, customers would understand and accept
the reason why their products prices were higher than others .
2. Callaway spent lots of money on R D, and that was why the prices were higher. So, for
beginning golf customers, buying new Callaway clubs was a daunting task, even if Callaway s
target market aimed at the average golf player rather than professional golf player.
Powers of buyers:
1. CGC s target market Average golfers (defined as playing 10 rounds minimum per year),
generally had handicaps above 18, and bought new equipment every two to three years.
2. Compare with woods and irons, putters were relatively inexpensive at around $100 each.
Because putting was viewed as the most critical aspect to the game and because most golfers were
weak putters, they tended to update their putters fairly frequently and with less product research. In
fact, many golfers owned five or more different putters

Brown v. Board of Education Case
10/3/17
1.Describe the parties and facts.
The parties were minors of Negro race who have been denied admission to schools attended by
white children due to laws requiring or allowing segregation by race. This goes against the
Fourteenth Amendment in 1868 which addresses citizenship rights and equal protection. Lawsuits
were filed in Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, and District of Columbia. In all the
cases, but the Delaware case, the Plessy V. Fergson, 163 U.S. 537 doctrine provided equal
treatment, but in segregated facilities. In the Delaware case, the Supreme Court of Delaware
allowed the plaintiffs to attend white schools because of their superiority to the Negro schools. The
plaintiffs were still unsatisfied with this doctrine, as they felt segregated public schools is not
considered equal and they were not granted the equal protection law.
2.Explain the outcome.
Brown v. Board of Education was a unanimous decision. It was determined that education is the
very foundation of good citizenship , and to separate the colored from the whites will cause
inferiority and affect them in a way that can never be undone. On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme
Court struck down racially segregated schools as unconstitutional in its landmark Brown v. Board
of Education ruling.
3.Identify ethical issues in the case.

Christopher uses logic instead of reason when making decisions I had to get out of the house.
Father had murdered Wellington. That meant he could murder me, because I couldn t trust him,
even though he had said Trust me, because he had told a lie about a big thing (Haddon, 122).
This shows how Christopher uses his logic instead of reason. Most people in that situation
would know that just because your dad killed a dog he would not kill you, but Christopher is
more worried about trust. This is because Christopher sees love as mostly, three things, trust,
someone who helps you, and someone who cares about you. Since Christopher doesn t trust his
dad anymore he thinks his dad doesn t care about him and this is logically thinking. This is
logically thinking because he used the facts that were their and added them up as if an equation
and made his decision to leave his dad. This is how he thought logically instead of with reason.
The second way Christopher used his logic to his advantage is when he left his father s house
and he went to Mrs. Shears house and he logically thought out all of his options and made his
decision on what he was doing next. [...] I did this by thinking of all the things I could do and
deciding whether they were the right decision or not. I decided that I couldn t go home again. And

How Did Religion Change Throughout The Middle Ages
During the time period between 1550 and 1650, Europe had diverse changes. An important issue of
this time was the change in the way people thought. Churches had high level of power due to
people believing in the same religion. France. Italy, Germany Scandinavia, and Spain were countries
facing hard times as their ruling were changing.
The influence churches had on Europe was massive. Catholicism was the main religion at that time
and people stopped to make the churches the center of everything. Its power had been built up over
the centuries and relied on ignorance and superstition on the part of the populace. It had been
indoctrinated into the people that they could only get to heaven via the church. Each Catholic church
consisted of a priest. Everyone that practiced this religion thought that the priest was their way to
heaven, giving him an enormous power. However, the relationship between people and churches
was essentially based on money. If people didn t have the same religion as the church they either
lied, fled, or they died. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Theu.s Dollar Became The World s Most Dominant Reserve...
The objective of this paper is to give a clearer picture to how the U.S dollar became the world s
most dominant reserve currency . Several countries use it as their official currency, and many
others use it as the de facto currency . Moreover, American dollar is the primary reserve currency,
which is used as the standard unit in international market for commodities such as gold and
petroleum. However, the dollar has been declining over the last three decades; in fact it has lost
almost half its value against other major currencies. The purpose of this research is to bring clarity
for the following questions: How, when and why the dollar became the world s reserve currency?
Benefits of having the largest world reserve currency? Comparing the dollar with the pound and the
up and rising Chinese Renminbi (RMB), and predictions for the future.
Keywords: Currency fluctuation; Reserve Currency; International Market; Global Reach
I.Introduction
We use the term reserve currency when we mean other countries use of dollars in international
trade. If Sweden, for example, buys goods from China, the goods can be paid with American
dollars instead of Swedish Krona. The methodological approach to address how, when and why
the dollar became the world s reserve currency will be supported by a historical and statistical
analysis. With a better understanding on how the U.S dollar become the most powerful currency
we can advance to understand the cost and benefits of it.

Female Power, Maternity and Genderbending in Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra
The 19th century essayist and literary critic William Hazlitt wrote of Cleopatra, She is voluptuous,
ostentatious, conscious, boastful of her charms, haughty, tyrannical, [and] fickle, which are great
and unpardonable faults (Hazlitt 2 3). Much of the criticism of Antony and Cleopatra has recycled
this judgement, depicting Cleopatra as a villainess uses her eroticism and sexuality to motivate
Antony to seek power. Cleopatra is memorable for her propensity for violence as well. While
Antony and Cleopatra was written after the death of a violent English queen, Elizabeth I,
Shakespeare may have been faced with a dramatic dilemma: how to make a woman ... Show more

The binary oppositions of masculine and feminine are thus personified by Caesar and Cleopatra,
not by Antony, whose men often regard him as the pawn of the deceptive queen and thus not a
real man. On the contrary, Robert Miola says, Caesar s sense of purpose and public responsibility
directly opposes Cleopatra s love of idleness and luxury (129), a conclusion supported by the fact
that it is Caesar who, after the deaths of Antony and Cleopatra, provides some closure to the
political chaos that has dominated the play.
Such an assertion that the danger of Cleopatra s sexuality lies in her Egyptian surroundings requires
further detail here. The Orient represented a strange, but terrifyingly fascinating world to the
Elizabethans. While it was decidedly inferior and politically weak, the Orient also held a dangerous
mystique. As Lucy Hughes Hallett attests, poets, playwrights, historians and artists have found the
idea of Cleopatra s foreignness, or otherness, a suitable method by which to explain away her
dangerous sexuality. In other words, the fact that Cleopatra effectively seduced and influenced two
powerful Roman men baffled Western thinkers who could only explain it by attributing it to her
foreignness or otherness. Not surprisingly, Shakespeare succumbs to a similar artistic temptation. In
the first ten lines of the play, the surrender of Roman dignity to Egyptian passion is made clear.

Disadvantages Of Being A Gladiator
What was life as a gladiator? How does it affect humans today? What were the advantages and
disadvantages of being a gladiator? There are so many are so many questions about gladiators that
go unanswered, but now, thanks to archaeologists, we are able to answer those questions. Evidence
shows that being a gladiators had both advantages and disadvantages. A gladiatoris an armed fighter
who entertained audiences in the Roman Empireby fighting against other gladiators, wild animals,
and criminals. In late 1st century, Nicolaus of Damascus believed they were Etruscans. A
generation later, the 1st gladiatorial ceremonies were held in 310 BC. It was held by the
Campanians in celebration of their over the Samnites. The Romans were greatly influenced by
their predecessors the Etruscans. For example, the Etruscans always sacrificed an animal before
their ceremonies, so the Romans started doing the same. Gladiators were usually slaves or
criminals, but could also be free men. Professionals gladiators were usually free men, but they
were all treated as slaves. Free men still wore shackles and had to do whatever they were told.
Although they were treated as slaves, free men would often be the most popular amongst the
crowd. Criminals and slaves would be set free if they survived 3 5 years as a gladiator. More than
100 gladiator schools were built throughout the Roman Empire. Gladiators were sent to school
depending on if they were a criminal or not.

Eco tourism
One aspect of tourism which has greatly been considered is eco tourism. As climate change guilt
among tourists grows, many tourist attractions are touting their environmental credentials in an
effort to cash in on the eco tag. We define nature based tourism as the segment of the tourism
market in which people travel with the primary purpose of visiting a natural destination. If we were
to draw an imaginary line through the tourism industry, with one side (the smaller side)
representing sustainable tourism and the other side representing non sustainable tourism, then
nature based tourism and cultural tourism, etc. would span the divide. We equate ecotourism with
nature based tourism that falls on the sustainable side of the line, where impact on the local
environment and human communities is low, direct financial benefits accrue to conservation
efforts and the local communities, there is respect for local cultures and needs, and the experience
builds environmental awareness.
As the demand for tourism grows, the notions for eco tourism sometimes drift away from its
original goals. Studies have been conducted on eco tourism which aims to standardize its goals
purposes. For instance, a study has

There has been some improvements made over the years, in a few categories that have heavily

Second is social change and how society s views and actions have changed. Last but certainly not
least is, the progression with homelessness. While examining LGBTQ+ issues it becomes clear that
although the ideal societal state has not yet been reached, progress has been made. A comparative
assessment of the past and present provides a clear understanding of the ongoing progression for
this community of people.
There has been quite a bit of progression made through laws and the removing of bans in Canada.

LGBTQ+ Youth are overrepresented in the homeless youth population. The same group of

many shelters are not the most accepting to this group of people. This being said though brings
me to this quote from an anonymous person, Although we ve come to expect homelessness as an
inescapable part of urban life, there s no good reason it needs to be so. Unfortunately a lot of
discrimination occurs in shelters. It can range anywhere from others directly being mean to you
because of your identity, to workers putting you in the dorms that match your birth sex rather than
your gender identity, and also bluntly not being permitted access into the shelter because of
something you can t control. Overtime this has slowly changed, there is now a homeless shelter

Essay On Technology And Technology
Does Technology Actually Make Us Feel More Alone?
When I think about the question of technology and the ability it has to make us feel alone , I
think about myself, my family and my friends. As a millennial, I have grown up in such a
technologically advanced world that it is becoming more and more of a second nature that
children at young ages of 10 and 12 are receiving their first cellphone. While time progresses and
the need for technology rises, our society as a whole is slowly starting to lose focus of the true
realitcal things in life, such as self happiness and making valuable friendships. My sole
understanding of this issue comes from the overwhelming growth of technology, specifically social
media. As young middle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children are now growing up with a cellphone at hand versus a coloring book or a play set. As
millennials age and the amount of millennials increase, so does the usage of technology.
Children are increasingly losing focus and independence and have started to become so reliant
on their cellphones; it has even gotten to the point that children are using phone applications to
finish homework. Also occurring, is the lack of sleep. Limiting time asleep is a dangerous
thing, especially for adolescents whose brains are still developing. A poll from the Aspen
Education Group found that adolescents who had four or more technological devices in their
bedrooms were almost twice as likely to fall asleep in school and while doing homework. As a
result, these children are losing focus on schoolwork. Eventually this will cause a domino effect:
an increase stress level due to being behind in class could even increase thoughts of suicide which
will eventually make you feel alone being behind in class while everyone else is up to speed. In
Jeane W. Tweng s article, Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation she states that this feelingof
loneliness is swift and significant (Tweng, 17). Because girls use social media more than boys, the
awareness of not being invited to a gathering is obvious. Over time, these girls and sometimes boys
are given additional opportunities to feel excluded and lonely (Twang, 17). This trend, in

The Firefly Hunt
For decades, writing has been a way for authors to create byproducts of themselves and portray
their alike qualities within what the outside world would like to consider fictional characters. It s
not uncommon to the writing world of novels and prestigious narratives take Stephen King for
example: although he didn t hide his motives as he used his original name in Songs of Susannah,
he introduced himself into the plot nonetheless, creating a familiar atmosphere where realism was
incorporated into a dream. When reading short stories like Red Cranes by Jacey Choy and The
Firefly Hunt by Jun ichiro Tanizaki, the audience can only be led to imagine if the authors have
placed themselves in a position to empathize with their creations.... Show more content on

Like the reader, authors can get lost in their words and find themselves in the shoes of someone
they are fabricating. This recycles their thought process, which ultimately forces them to reword
their fears and doubts in order for the reader to connect with their tone. In a passage of Red
Cranes, Choy forms her character, Mie, to ask questions despite her underlining terror of
receiving a scolding in response. For a young girl in Japan, practicality was the only way to
survive, and when Mie voiced her thoughts of imagining herself on the back of a red crane, flying
high in the air (p.4), her mother disregarded her wild ideas for a young girl (p.13), and in return,
told her to focus on her reading and writing. It s a contrast to the way Sachiko freely thought inside
of her mind, holding the dreamer at bay inside of her. Instead, her silent thoughts were incorporated
into the description of her surroundings, where the air was dreamy and calm with nature s natural
light fluttering around her. Both girls are visionaries, but they are lost in different reveries. While
both authors might have experienced the need to love the world at every single angle, their
characters and perhaps the nonfictional result of the writers themselves found different paths to
take at the end of their respective

Examples Of Powerlessness In The Count Of Monte Cristo
In the words of Plato, The measure of a man is what he does with power . In addition, some of
our world leaders use their powers wisely, like using their power to benefit the people and not just
themselves. Other leaders like Kim Jong iI not only use their power to the fullest extent, but they
also abuse their power and not for the good of the people but for their own selfish reasons. For
example, Kim Jong il, the former dictator of North Korea, did not care about his people, especially
the poor. He would starve them and if they were too weak to work he would torture or even kill
them. The theme about power and powerlessness is shown in history and even literature. In the
Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, the author uses personification... Show more content

Shortly after the Count reunites Max and Valentine, he sails off into the horizon with Hadee by his
side. When the Count leaves, he leaves Max with a letter telling him about what he has learned
through his life. He told Max about how he thought that he was equal to God and how he thought
that he was doing God s work on Earth. However, throughout his life, the Count learned that no
one is equal to God and that supreme power and wisdom are in the ...hands of God alone...
(Dumas 530). This biblical allusion shows that the Count has now learned that everything is in
God s hands and that God has all of the power. By using biblical allusions it also shows that
whenever someone receives a lot of power they can start to think that they are above everyone else,
and that sometimes they can start to think that they are someone that they really aren t.
Furthermore, the Count has seen Valentine being slowly poisoned by Madame de Villefort so he
wants to help her survive. Before the Count gives Valentine the medicine to make her sleep but
appear to be deceased, Valentine is confused about how the count was able to watch her and know
what was happening to her because she hasn t ...seen [the count] until now (Dumas 423). Valenten
decies to trust the count becasue that is her only option. This literary device helps develop the
theme by showing that the Count ,

The downfall of Oedipus Rex
Imagine encountering a person whose decisions are driven solely by rage and reckless impulses,
some examples of this person s actions would be endangering others, emotional distress and self
harm.In Sophocles Oedipus Rex, Oedipus and others suffer because of his quick temper and rash
behavior. The first example of others suffering from Oedipus quick temper which causes him to
attack people he once trusted and praised, with false accustations.Occurs when Oedipus quick

This situation occurred once Teiresias explains to Oedipus that he (Oedipus) is the one who
killed Laius who is the former king of Thebes.Oedipus becomes irritated by Teiresias s words,
which causes Oedipus s quick temper to take over and he then incriminates Teiresias of plotting
against him, he also states that Teiresias is trying to destroy him.Which then leads Oedipus into
saying What a wicked old man you are! You d try a stone s patience! (Sophocles1.18).We then see
Teiresias s response to having all of these flawed accusations put against him, he responds by

Evil Definition Essay
Evil is immorality without reasonable justification. Evil is harming another for no reason other
than personal satisfaction or achievement. Evil is the premeditated act of damage to another
person, whether it s emotional, physical, or financial. In my opinion, pure evil isn t common.
Looking at a criminal s past, for example, and seeing the decisions they faced, one is able to
understand or even sympathize with their actions. This changes certain acts from evilto a label that s
still horrid, but allows the public to comprehend the reasons behind the crime. Say, for instance,
a woman of 40 murders her partner and young children. Many might call this woman evil.
However, if we see that she s been suffering from schizophrenia and her insurance told her they
wouldn t cover her new prescription, we start to understand how she was in an altered state of
mind. Piling on stress and the extent of her illness, we see how she could have killed her family.
This explanation exonerates her from the label of evil .... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I grew up in a culture where my immediate family was democratic, and I went to an extremely
liberal arts private school for 13 years. I was raised to judge only after knowing all of the facts,
which influences how I see evil. Knowing one s backstory humanizes them. This is important; we
have to humanize every defendant in court or they just become a number, and the criminal justice
system has failed. I haven t had any personal experiences with evil. From a religious point of view,
I m an agnostic but I was raised Jewish. I never believed in God, and I remember little of the
teachings of Judaism. Therefore, being non religious has affected my view of evil in the sense that
I don t believe in the conservative values of evil (homosexuality, for instance). Recent events and
survival needs have not influenced my

The Play Distracted By Lisa Loomer Essay
The play Distracted by Lisa Loomer talks about a 9 year old boy who has trouble learning in
school. He screams at his parents and the teacher suspects the boy may have ADHD. The mom
received some advice from her friends and the psychiatrist suggests Ritalin. The father, on the
other hand, disagrees. There is a family conflict between the mom and dad. Then, in the other
speaker series I attended was Immigrant nation. It is a documentary film directed by Esau
Melendaz. Its primary focus was about an undocumented immigrant who was deported back to her
country. She refused to go back and was forced to stay in an asylum or one year. As a result, she
began the immigrationreform movement. People of whom were from different cultures supported
her. The third Speaker series, I attended, was Working for our political environment and Personal
Health by Jill Stein. There, Dr. Stein pointed the dysfunctional ways of the political system. She
advocated for proper attention for these problems such as: free education, healthy food and a
pollution free environment. The final event was the Transformative Social Justice through Radical
Science Fiction by Adrennie Brown. The speech was mainly about changethat could be brought
upon the world through sci fi . She talked about, social, racial and sex justice. After listening to
these events, it made me realize that it s every individual responsibilityto bring change to our

The Aeneid Essay
Publius Vergilius Maro, more commonly known as Virgil, was born on October 15, 70 B.C. in a
small village near Mantua in Northern Italy. He was born into a relatively well to do family, as
his parents were farm owners with a hefty amount of land to their name. Virgil was provided
with an education that quenched his thirst for knowledge. He showed a particular interest in
mathematics and medicine, but also studied in law and rhetoric. Quickly after his first law case,
he gave up his studies of law and turned his interests to philosophy. Due to civil unrest, Virgil
was forced to flee his home in 49 B.C. He traveled to Naples and began his career as a poet. With
sponsorship from his friend, Augustus Caesar, Virgil was able to enjoy the... Show more content on

The Aeneid also proved to roman citizens that the roman Emperors were descendants of the
founders, heros and gods of Rome and Troy. ( Patron Augustus Client Rome ) Virgil used some of
the same characters that Homer used in his famous poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Ulysses was
the hero of Homer s Odyssey. In the Odyssey, Ulysses took a long, dangerous, and treacherous
voyage before he was able to make it home again, very similar to Aeneas. References that are
used in the Aeneid to the current location of Ulysses help readers realize Aeneas location when
compared to Ulysses in the poem. Achilles, who was the greatest of all the Greek warriors, slew
Hector, a Trojan hero, during the war in the Aeneid and was the tragic hero of the Iliad. Hector
was also used as a parallel figure to Turnus, who also defended his native city to the death.
Andromache, Hector s wife, survived the siege of Troy. She meets Aeneas on his journey, tells
him her story, and advises his course to Italy. Paris was a Trojan prince, and the brother to Hector.
He was asked by Venus, Juno, and Minerva to make a judgement on who the most attractive of the
three was. He was promised Helen by Venus, therefore, he chose Venus. Stealing Helen provokes
the Trojan War. Menelaus was Helen s husband and he made a pact with Helen s other suitors to
fight anyone who tried to steal her. When Paris took Helen, the pact was invoked and the Trojan
War began. His selection inspires haughty Juno s

Use Your Own Language Analysis
Society today is quick to judge and state what is wrong and what is acceptable by the public.
While some differences between Spelling Matters and Use Your Own Words are obvious, the
similarities are relevant. Anne Trubek says that perhaps it is time to change or alter grammar
rules to match the current generation and culture. We should advance our guidelines about what is
proper and improper along with what is happening right now with the language. While Mikita
Brottman says, bad spelling can be a godsend a way of weeding out those who are thoughtless and
inattentive to detail (p. 219). Nonetheless, to observe that something is a mess and conclude that
we should remove all limits and let it get even messier is absurd. Yes, English spelling is hard to
learn. English spelling is a terrible mess (p. 221) says Anne Trubek. Modern technology does not
help either. Computers, smartphones, and tablets are speeding the adoption... Show more content on

With modern technologies, the way we write and read is changing rapidly, and with such changes
so must spelling. Both authors make valid points, but at the same time have different views. Both,
Mikita Brottman and Anne Trubek are passionate about spelling and grammar. Brottman says that
spelling counts, grammar counts, and consistency counts in rГ©sumГ©s. Mikita Brottman states
that everyone especially those applying for a job should know how to properly spell the name of
their field of expertise. Trubek says that as long as the message gets understood, spelling is not
necessarily as important as the meaning behind the message. No, autocorrect and spellcheckers are
wrongheaded because they reinforce a traditional spelling standard. Consistent spelling was a great
way to ensure clarity in the print era. But with new technologies, the way that we write and read
(and search and data mine) is changing, and so must spelling. (p.

Sophocles Phaedrus Knowledge Bias
Phaedrus was told a story by his classical Greek philosopher friend Socrates. The story was about
the King of great city of Egypt, Thamus. He was introduced a lot of inventions by Theuth who was
known as the god of inventions. Theuth declared that his inventions would be available extensively
to Egypt s people.
One of the Theuth s inventions was writing and he believed that it can help Egyptians to get better
with their wisdom and memory. Whereas Thamus contradicted his approach and said this invention
can stop people to practice their memory and they can get forgetful and can be dependent on this
invention.

He conveys that bringing a new technology can bring many new words and also they have to work
on their old words too. His main concern was technology could be the cause of monopoly in the
society. It means that someone in the society whoever controls new technology will have all that
power and this could create disruptance in the society. Harold Innis used the term Knowledge
Monopolies in his book The Bias of Communication which also conveys the same message.
In this article, Author gave an example of Television that tells that TV has become very important
part for many people s life and it can gradually end the profession of teaching. One more example,
he mentioned in his article was about computer technology that has made a group of people more
powerful than those people whose privacy is risked because of them. This is all because of
technology which remained the same but has different effects in different ways.
According to the article Thamus noticed conceit of knowledge but he showed that it won t succeed
for so long because computers will provide private learning opportunities and will take over four

  • 2. The Importance Of Thanksgiving During The Renaissance Before all the delicious Thanksgiving dishes are served, the guests need something to tide them over. Everyone loves appetizers and starting snacks such as bread rolls and salad. These delicious appetizers get the meal started and prepare the guests for the much larger dishes that are yet to come. Food is what the guests mainly look forward to during Thanksgiving, as the get the festivities started. This is similar to how the Black Deathmarks the beginning of the Renaissance, and was a major turning point for the time period. During this element, consultants explained in detail the possible options for the park and circulated taking notes of participant desires, likes and dislikes (IAP2 Public Participation Spectrum, 2007). This element was very interactive and gave each participant a chance to share his or her thoughts and concerns. The consultants will be re tweaking new elements into the final concept design and be bringing the proposed model concept for participants to have a 3D model to give final feedback on prior to the construction phase in spring 2018. The consultants effectively applied the IAP2 s Code of Ethic for Public Participation Practitioners and met the role of a practitioner by building trust, respect for communities, defined the publics role and promoted commitment and advocacy ( IAP2 s Code of Ethic for Public Participation Practitioners, 2007). The main reasons that the power of imperialism is important for the United States is because of the land and resources that each place has, money, and the language and government. The policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries. • 5. Similarities Between Memi And Statue Of Gudea All over the world statues have been a common form of art among many civilizations throughout history. Two examples of these historical pieces of work would include, The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu, and Statue of Gudea. According to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2017), the first sculpture dates back during the fourth dynasty of ancient Egyptbetween 2575 and 2465 BC. The second statue, according to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2017), which was made of diorite was created around 2090 BC, during the Neo Sumerian period, near Mesopotamia. Looking further into the background and composition of these two sculptures it can be found that The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu, and Statue of Gudea share some characteristics while at the same time differing in some important details.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, The statue of Memi and Sabu is made of limestone and paint, which is a very pale color. Then it can be seen that this piece consists of a couple standing side by side; the male on the left (Memi) has his arm wrapped around the shoulder of the female (Sabu) on the right, who holds a more oblique gaze (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017). Second, Statue of Gudea, unlike the other work which is an individual work of art, belongs to a series of diorite statues that were commissioned by Gudea (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017). This statue made of diorite contrasts with the previous work with its very dark color. Furthermore, unlike the couple in the previous work, this sculpture shows an individual man sitting down by himself with his hands clasped together, which shows a sense of ... • 6. Death of General Wolfe Essay Analysis of The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West In 1770, artist Benjamin Wolfe completed what would become his most controversial and talked about piece of artwork, an oil on canvas painting titled The Death of General Wolfe, the purpose of which was to teach a moral lesson. The Death of General Wolfe portrays the Battle of Quebec, but more specifically it details the moment when Major General James Wolfewas on his deathbed shortly after the British had driven the French away in victory. Although this piece is considered to be historical since it details a true event, the details in it prove to be fabricated for the sake of art. Benjamin West was truly a remarkable artist who required no formal art education to learn how to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that the clouds are passing by and opening can represent two things. The first is that it can be a symbol of General Wolfe, and as the clouds pass over head, his soul will similarly pass over and die. Second is that the passing clouds can be viewed as a sign of hope that the battle is now over and people can live peacefully. One other piece of symbolism is the flag behind General Wolfe, which serves as a directional force. Since it is pointed at both General Wolfe and the sky, it signifies the fact that Wolfe s soul will go up onto Heaven. The colors in this piece are instrumental in moving the eye across the piece and drawing attention to specific parts of the piece. For instance, for the most part, the colors that are used are dark. However, to emphasize General Wolfe, the focal point in the middle, his outfit is painted in a brighter red and yellow and the ground beneath him is light as well. Also, in order to allow the eye to glide across the painting almost all of the soldier s uniforms are red, creating rhythm. One solider, who is apparently rushing into see Wolfe, is painted in green, which is the complimentary color to red. The use of complimentary colors brings the eyes attention to the panicked solider, emphasizing the overall sense of urgency in the piece. The piece is also well balanced and uses appropriate scales and proportions. Overall I think West was successful in his piece. I admire the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Metal hydrogen carbonate + acid в†’ salt + water + carbon dioxide Sodium hydrogen carbonate + hydrochloric acid в†’ sodium chloride + water + carbon dioxide NaHCO3 + HCl в†’ NaCl + H2O + CO2 Acids and bases can be defined as either strong or weak. The strength of an acid or base is determined by the amount of ionisation. Ionisation is the creation of an ion through the addition or removal of an electron. If a substance ionises completely, it is referred to as a strong acid. Weaker acids do not ionise completely in solution; therefore, they are referred to as weak acids. • 9. The Role Of Lady Capulet In Romeo And Juliet In William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Lady Capulet and the Nurse are responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because Lady Capulet is pragmatic and the Nurse is irresponsible. Lady Capulet s traditional views on love and forcing her daughter to marry Paris are two examples in which Lady Capulet shows us that being pragmatic was the cause for the lover s deaths. Compared to Juliet, Lady Capulet is very pragmatic when its comes to views on the meaning and ideas of love. Her opinion is that the tradition of arranged marriages is correct, as in that marriage should be arranged by your parents and you should do what you are told. Lady Capulet instructs Juliet to seek out her future husband at the party and asks her, What say you? Can you love the gentleman? This night you shall behold him at our feast (1.3.85 100). Lady Capulet, who married at a young age, offers complete support for her husband s plan for their daughter, and puts pressure on Juliet to think about Paris as a husband even before Juliet has begun to think about marriage at all. Considering the fact that a marriage to Paris would bring increasing social status and wealth for the Capulets, it s reasonable to say that Lady Capulet was thinking about this situation pragmatically. Assuming that Lady Capulet is still quite young herself, she should be able to remember her feelings of being forced into an arranged marriage and use them to persuade Juliet in a different approach. If Lady Capulet had put less pressure on Juliet to marry Paris or consider the fact that she might not even want to marry for social status or wealth, Juliet s death might not have taken place in the way it did. When Juliet rebels against the planned marriage with Paris, she s rebelling against her mother s way of life, and against the kind of marriage that Lady Capulet learned to suffer through. After Juliet refuses to marry Paris as her parents wish, Lady Capulet comes in and responds, Talk not to me, for I ll not say a word Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee (3.5.15). These words express how Lady Capulet is an irresponsible mother. She declares that she is done with this entire situation showing that she s ineffectual. There is a major change from the ... • 12. Francis Aloysius Phelan s `` Ironweed `` Events that unfold in a person s life occur because of uncontrollable circumstances around them as well as their actions. This balance of power of these two forces is never the same with different people. Thus, people fall into two general categories, those at the mercy of the uncontrollable and those who exert more control over their lives than outside forces do. Francis Aloysius Phelan in William Kennedy s novel, Ironweed, falls into this second category. Francis is a former professional baseball player in his younger days who now finds himself, at fifty eight, living as a bum in Albany, New York in 1938 during the Great Depression . Francis life is one filled with death, destruction and general unhappiness worse than the average person living during the same time of economic turmoil. Francis situation in his life is one he has little control over in some areas but controls most of. Francis Phelan s decision making is at fault for his misfortunes. One reason Francis is mired in abject circumstances is because of his laissez faire attitude with money. One example of this laid back attitude towards spending money occurs when Francis goes home after twenty two years and receives ten dollars from his son, Billy. Knowing Francis, this ten dollars would not last long nor would the purchase be wise. He would not spend it after careful consideration to survive but would throw it away on a thoughtless splurge on the unnecessary. Francis does not disappoint by spending most of ... In addition, this black and white vignette is a romantic, idyllic view of the Arno and is in contrast with the brightly coloured, sunlit scene of the following morning, which is full of life, movement and noise, as the Italians go about their daily routines and Lucy views the reality which is about to alter her world for ever. • 17. Disability In The Age Of Disability Throughout history, society has attempted to define where disability belongs within the social order based upon societal interpretation of disability, political context, and economic context. Holistically, the view and stigma of disability altered through three distinct phases. The earliest thinkers subscribed to a spiritual model in which disabilitywas believed to be some form of moral punishment. The onset of the Age of Enlightenment, rather, valued empiricism and experimentation above supernatural superstition, giving way to the modern interpretation of disability in which society s institutional roadblocks, negative attitudes, and societal exclusion are the factors which truly disable some individuals. Specifically, this paper will examine the facets of the first and second phases as well as the logistics of the shift between them and their effects. Holistically, Enlightenment thinking shifted the view of disability from moral to medical in nature, laying the foundation for modern day special educational values. (Atkins and Hayman, 168; Hughes and Paterson, 325 340) The first lens through which society and intellectuals viewed disability prevailed from pre historic times until the Age of Enlightenment and largely associated disability with sin and moral punishment. Neolithic tribes, presumably thriving between 7000 BC and 1700 BC, believed disability to be caused by evil spirits. Adopting a similar mindset to 19th century medical professionals who endorsed ... This goes against the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868 which addresses citizenship rights and equal protection. Lawsuits were filed in Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, and District of Columbia. In all the cases, but the Delaware case, the Plessy V. The plaintiffs were still unsatisfied with this doctrine, as they felt segregated public schools is not considered equal and they were not granted the equal protection law. 2.Explain the outcome. Brown v. Board of Education was a unanimous decision. It was determined that education is the very foundation of good citizenship , and to separate the colored from the whites will cause inferiority and affect them in a way that can never be undone. Female Power, Maternity and Genderbending in Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra The 19th century essayist and literary critic William Hazlitt wrote of Cleopatra, She is voluptuous, ostentatious, conscious, boastful of her charms, haughty, tyrannical, [and] fickle, which are great and unpardonable faults (Hazlitt 2 3). Much of the criticism of Antony and Cleopatra has recycled this judgement, depicting Cleopatra as a villainess uses her eroticism and sexuality to motivate Antony to seek power. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The binary oppositions of masculine and feminine are thus personified by Caesar and Cleopatra, not by Antony, whose men often regard him as the pawn of the deceptive queen and thus not a real man. On the contrary, Robert Miola says, Caesar s sense of purpose and public responsibility directly opposes Cleopatra s love of idleness and luxury (129), a conclusion supported by the fact that it is Caesar who, after the deaths of Antony and Cleopatra, provides some closure to the political chaos that has dominated the play. Such an assertion that the danger of Cleopatra s sexuality lies in her Egyptian surroundings requires further detail here. The Orient represented a strange, but terrifyingly fascinating world to the Elizabethans. While it was decidedly inferior and politically weak, the Orient also held a dangerous mystique. As Lucy Hughes Hallett attests, poets, playwrights, historians and artists have found the idea of Cleopatra s foreignness, or otherness, a suitable method by which to explain away her dangerous sexuality. In other words, the fact that Cleopatra effectively seduced and influenced two powerful Roman men baffled Western thinkers who could only explain it by attributing it to her foreignness or otherness. Not surprisingly, Shakespeare succumbs to a similar artistic temptation. In the first ten lines of the play, the surrender of Roman dignity to Egyptian passion is made clear. Eco tourism One aspect of tourism which has greatly been considered is eco tourism. As climate change guilt among tourists grows, many tourist attractions are touting their environmental credentials in an effort to cash in on the eco tag. We define nature based tourism as the segment of the tourism market in which people travel with the primary purpose of visiting a natural destination. If we were to draw an imaginary line through the tourism industry, with one side (the smaller side) representing sustainable tourism and the other side representing non sustainable tourism, then nature based tourism and cultural tourism, etc. would span the divide. We equate ecotourism with nature based tourism that falls on the sustainable side of the line, where impact on the local environment and human communities is low, direct financial benefits accrue to conservation efforts and the local communities, there is respect for local cultures and needs, and the experience builds environmental awareness. As the demand for tourism grows, the notions for eco tourism sometimes drift away from its original goals. Studies have been conducted on eco tourism which aims to standardize its goals purposes. The first category is one many people overlook, legal issues. Second is social change and how society s views and actions have changed. Last but certainly not least is, the progression with homelessness. While examining LGBTQ+ issues it becomes clear that although the ideal societal state has not yet been reached, progress has been made. A comparative assessment of the past and present provides a clear understanding of the ongoing progression for this community of people. There has been quite a bit of progression made through laws and the removing of bans in Canada. Starting from the darker side of the progression, homosexuality used to be punishable by death. The same group of people are also underrepresented in homeless shelters. There is one main reason for why this is, many shelters are not the most accepting to this group of people. This being said though brings me to this quote from an anonymous person, Although we ve come to expect homelessness as an inescapable part of urban life, there s no good reason it needs to be so. Unfortunately a lot of discrimination occurs in shelters. It can range anywhere from others directly being mean to you because of your identity, to workers putting you in the dorms that match your birth sex rather than your gender identity, and also bluntly not being permitted access into the shelter because of something you can t control. Overtime this has slowly changed, there is now a homeless shelter for LGBTQ+ Youth. They called it the Sprott Home. The idea of it is it s a safe place for transitioning youth. When I think about the question of technology and the ability it has to make us feel alone , I think about myself, my family and my friends. As a millennial, I have grown up in such a technologically advanced world that it is becoming more and more of a second nature that children at young ages of 10 and 12 are receiving their first cellphone. While time progresses and the need for technology rises, our society as a whole is slowly starting to lose focus of the true realitcal things in life, such as self happiness and making valuable friendships. My sole understanding of this issue comes from the overwhelming growth of technology, specifically social media. As young middle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children are now growing up with a cellphone at hand versus a coloring book or a play set. As millennials age and the amount of millennials increase, so does the usage of technology. Children are increasingly losing focus and independence and have started to become so reliant on their cellphones; it has even gotten to the point that children are using phone applications to finish homework. Also occurring, is the lack of sleep. Limiting time asleep is a dangerous thing, especially for adolescents whose brains are still developing. A poll from the Aspen Education Group found that adolescents who had four or more technological devices in their bedrooms were almost twice as likely to fall asleep in school and while doing homework. As a result, these children are losing focus on schoolwork. Eventually this will cause a domino effect: an increase stress level due to being behind in class could even increase thoughts of suicide which will eventually make you feel alone being behind in class while everyone else is up to speed. In Jeane W. Tweng s article, Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation she states that this feelingof loneliness is swift and significant (Tweng, 17). This recycles their thought process, which ultimately forces them to reword their fears and doubts in order for the reader to connect with their tone. In a passage of Red Cranes, Choy forms her character, Mie, to ask questions despite her underlining terror of receiving a scolding in response. For a young girl in Japan, practicality was the only way to survive, and when Mie voiced her thoughts of imagining herself on the back of a red crane, flying high in the air (p.4), her mother disregarded her wild ideas for a young girl (p.13), and in return, told her to focus on her reading and writing. It s a contrast to the way Sachiko freely thought inside of her mind, holding the dreamer at bay inside of her. Instead, her silent thoughts were incorporated into the description of her surroundings, where the air was dreamy and calm with nature s natural light fluttering around her. Evil is the premeditated act of damage to another person, whether it s emotional, physical, or financial. In my opinion, pure evil isn t common. Looking at a criminal s past, for example, and seeing the decisions they faced, one is able to understand or even sympathize with their actions. This changes certain acts from evilto a label that s still horrid, but allows the public to comprehend the reasons behind the crime. Say, for instance, a woman of 40 murders her partner and young children. Many might call this woman evil. However, if we see that she s been suffering from schizophrenia and her insurance told her they wouldn t cover her new prescription, we start to understand how she was in an altered state of mind.
