This book is divided into four main sections, and I ll be talking about the most

(Generals Lee Longstreet from the South and Generals Chamberlain Buford from the
Union) as they fight through the battle of Gettysburg.
The year is 1863. The American Civil Warhas dragged on for over two years. For
most of the war the South has been playing defense in their own background, using
maneuvers and tactics to gain impressive victories over the far superior Union Army.
General Meade has been thrust into command of the Army of the Potomac. President
Lincoln faces heat in Washington and his reelection is in doubt. The time is now for
General Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia to go on the offense and end the...
He attempts to gather all his divisions together and begin his offensive campaign
against General Meade s armies. On the Union side, General Buford engages Lee s
forces until dusk in order to hold off their advances and allow his men to keep the
high ground and gain a strategic advantage. It appears that Lee has gained a major
victory at this point since Buford ran to the hills . Day two dawns with General
Longstreet trying to convince Lee that the Army of Northern Virginia is not built
to go on the offensive and that a full on assault campaign will ruin the Army. Lee
pays no heed. General Chamberlain and his Maine Men are the end of the Union
Line and successfully holds off a far superior Confederate assault and keep the
high ground. On the third and final day of the battle, General Lee commits the
greatest folly of his illustrious career. Again dismissing the pleas of Longstreet,
Lee sends General Pickett and his division across an open field to attack the Union
position. To this day, military historians are unsure why Lee sent Picket on this
suicide mission. Pickett s Charge led to catastrophic losses for the Confederate
Army and a shocked General Lee was forced to call retreat. Thus ended the
bloodiest battle of the American Civil War and effectively ended the war for all
intents and purposes (although the war would rage on for another year and a half).
