The Douglas DC-3 Is A Fixed-Wing Propeller-Driven Airliner
The Douglas DC 3 is a fixed wing propeller driven airliner. Its cruise speed (207 mph or 333 km/h)
and range (1,500 mi or 2,400 km) revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Its lasting effect
on the airline industry and World War II makes it one of the most significant transport aircraft ever
made. The DC 3 was a twin engine metal monoplane, developed as a larger, improved 14 bed sleeper
version of the Douglas DC 2. However, together with its military derivative, the C 47 Skytrain over
16,000 were built. Large numbers continue to see service in a wide variety well into the 21st century.
Approximately 400 DC 3s and converted C 47s are still flying to this day as a testament to the
durability of the design, many examples being over

Reasons For M Ā Ori Migration
Māori urbanisation happen drastically during the late 1930s. Currently, there are more than 80% of the
Māori people living in the cities with 25% of the population in Auckland city (Durie 2001:7). Money
was an important reason driving the Māori population to migrate to urban centres for a better lifestyle.
However, money was not the only factor for urbanisation, there are other aspects interconnected with
each other such as loss of land to the crown, more employment opportunities and access to education
in the cities. This essay will explore an overview of these three reasons for Māori migration, followed
by a discussion on both the negative and positive impacts of migration on the traditional Māori
society. The centre of Māori culture lies with the land, it engages their life with nourishment and
represent individuals mana (power and authority) (King 1992:175). Whenua (land) is fundamental to
Māori identity, it connects the future generations to their whakapapa (genealogy) (Williams 2004:50).
Māori relied on the land to support their families. During World War Two Māori land was taken by the
crown under the New Zealand Settlements Act, 1863 (Schwimmer, Forster, Parker Ritchie 1968:72).
Hence, large numbers of Māori people migrates to cities after World War Two. By 1945, 26% of the
Māori population moved to urban cities due to the government controlling their income and resources
(Coleman, Dixon, Marē 2005:21). In addition to the restriction of land, there were less

Van Gogh s The Courtesan An Image of Utopia
Beginning in the 1870s and extending into the 1900s, two major styles of art became prevalent in the
country of France; Impressionism and Post Impressionism. Impressionism resulted from the feelings
of chaos and instability from a major increase in population, showing scenes in a sketch like manner
through a portrayal of senses. By the mid 1880s, Post Impressionism emerged, causing a return from
the spontaneity that was missing traditional elements and explored expressing emotion while still
using formal elements. Vincent Van Gogh used the Post Impressionist influence of Japonisme, the
Japanese aesthetic associated with the new useage of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main subject, the woman, was essentially copied and enlarged from a woodblock print by Keisai
Eisen featured on the cover of a popular magazine in France from May 1886. Though the background
of the garden scene does demonstrate some use of perspective, the main central image of the Japanese
woman remains very flat and one dimensional, a technique typical in wood block prints. The dark
outlines on a majority of the environment is reminiscent of methods used to produce a Japanese print.
He used many Japanese motifs in the work, such as the bamboo, water lilies, and the boat in the
landscape portion of the painting, paying homage to the culture Van Gogh was borrowing so heavily

Descriptions And Differences Of The Alpine And Desert...
The world has many ecosystems which has some similarities and some differences to each other. In
my essay I am going to contrast and compare the Alpine and Desert Ecosystems describing climates,
soils, plant adaptations and interactions between plants and animals.
First I would like to give an overview of each ecosystem and then compare their attributes.
Alpine Ecosystems can be found all around the world on great mountain ranges at an altitude of 10000
feet or more just below the snow line of the mountains for example in the Andes, Alps or Rocky
Mountains. Around 16% percent of the Earth s surface is part of this ecosystem.
The climate here is generally very cold which leads to the ground being mostly frozen. Due to this
dead plants cannot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also want to preserve the water they gained so they are mostly slower growing which takes less
energy therefore less food which means they do not use as much water.
They also developed a range of methods to scare animals away, but on the other hand they need
pollinators who in these areas are more active in the night so their flowers open at this time.
The main similarity between the plant adaptations in these ecosystems is that they grow small because
of the lack of nutrients in the soil, the wind and the extreme weather.
They also develop hairy leaves but for different reasons. In the Alpine Ecosystem they are doing it to
help them keep the warmth they gained during the day and also to break the wind and provide a fairly
warmer temperature around the plant. However in the Desert Ecosystem they do it to reduce water
loss.
Another similarity is that their leaves or flowers are turning during the day. But again it has different
causes. While in Alpine regions they want to absorb more sun this was, in Desert regions they want to
avoid losing water.
They have similarities in growing spine or needles instead of leaves because these are more efficient
in absorbing sunlight which is crucial for

Figurative Language In Ray Bradbury s Excerpt From...
In Ray Bradbury s excerpt from Dandelion wine, he uses a variety of rhetorical devices to make us
comprehend the atmosphere of the passage, augmenting the boy s imagination. In the beginning of the
passage, Bradbury uses a variety of figurative language to give a new perspective of the town. As
stated in lines 1 through 2the author describes the town at ease in bed , which implies that the town is
being personified to make it more relatable and vivid, and show the town s insight of peace and
tranquility. The author continues on by describing the boy as , Like the goddess Siva in the travel
books , he saw his hand jump everywhere . This makes us allude all the many things the goddess Siva
did, comparing on all the many things the boy has planned to do in the summer, implying that the
town is a place full pf activities and wonders. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bradbury starts out by saying in line 35 through 39 ....dark spiral stairs..sorcerer s tower...thunders and
visions. Ritual magic . Here the author uses diction in the semantic field of mystery, in order to take a
creepy turn of what looked to be a lovely place to something dark and unexpected. As the house lights
winked.. and a sprinkle of windows came suddenly alight , the author personifies and compares to
make the town more vivid and more relatable again as it was when the story began, and bringing the

Essay on Alcohol Abuse and Native Americans
The impact of various kinds of substances to cultural groups has historically been precipitated by the
significance of particular substances on different cultural groups (Moore, 2010).This is mainly
because the long term usage of these substances leads to the integration of the consumption of the
substance into the cultural patterns of the given group. One such group that has been affected by the
extensive usage of a particular substance is the Native American community. According to the
Associated Press (2014, August 28), as noted on the MSNBC website, out of ten deaths among the
Native American population, one is Alcohol related. Additionally, the prevalence of Alcohol
consumption among the Native American population relates to ... Show more content on

However, in order to understand the culture of the Native Americans, it is important to study each
group distinctly from the other. While the history of the Native Americans is beyond the scope of this
paper, it suffices to note that the enduring cultural practices of the Native Americans have had an
impact on the abuse of substances such as Alcohol (Moore Gay, 2010). The prevalence of alcohol
among this cultural group has been influenced in two ways: by a misperception, social rules, norms
and customs, and traditions that have normalized drinking among certain tribes.
The contextual cultural experiences of most Native Americans has led to the normalization of drinking
especially among age groups and related events such as among peers and when preaching.
Nevertheless, the stereotype of the drunken Indian has also had an impact on the consumption levels
in this cultural group (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2011). A study of the Navajo Indians led to
the conclusion that stereotype can lead members of the group to consider excessive drinking as a
normal part of the cultural practices of a particular cultural group. Indeed, the Native American
population has been influenced by such stereotypes which traverse the history of the Indians, for
example, in as far as consumption of alcohol is concerned (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2011).
According to statistics held by the U.S. National Library of

Mummies In Ancient Egypt
What is wrapped in lined and put in a coffin forever? Ghastly faces, dried in salt why would Ancient
Egyptians go to all that trouble for a corpse that no one will ever see again? Mummies are fascinating,
and they have been around for over 5000 years. Ancient Egypt is an ancient civilization in the deserts
of Africa. Ancient Mummies are fascinating due to why Egyptians mummify, how they mummify, and
the burial process.
Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead for special reasons. Egyptians had a wish, the wish to live
forever. They believed that after they died a new life began. Egyptians believed that everyone had a
ba, and a ka. A ba is a soul, and a ka is a invisible twin of the person. Egyptians believed that when a

Going into further detail, first small bunches of natron encased in linen were stuffed in the body. The
corpse s brain was removed and most likely thrown away. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the
brain was the least important organ in the body. After 40 days passed by, the natron packs were
removed. The dried, withered body was then swabbed clean and caressed with oils, spices, and resin.
They eye sockets were corked with linen and closed. The nostrils were packed with beeswax. Then the
arms were crossed, and the fingernails and toenails were hidden in caps of gold. The embalming cut,
(the cut where the inner organs were taken out) was then stitched together. The mummy was decorated
with jewels, gold, and precious stones like the Eye of Horus. Then the body was deliberately bound
with long, narrow bands of linen. The fingers, toes, and legs were all wrapped individually. Linen
shrouds were arranged between the layers of binding. Every few layers of linen were glued together
with resin. After twenty layers of binding and linen shrouds, the mummy s body returned it it s normal
size. Magic amulets were then inserted in between the mummy s wrappings, along with small,
mummy shaped figures called shabtis, which held farm tools. The wrapped head was shrouded with a
portrait mask, that way if anything happened to the mummy the ba and the ka could still recognize it.
Then the mask, too, was bound. Lastly, the whole package was wrapped in a shroud and accustomed a

The Issue Of Food Safety
Food safety is important , millions of people become seriously ill every year by the consumption of
unsafe food. Major outbreaks of food borne disease have been recorded on every continent in the past
10 years and its on the rise. legislation is used to enforce food safety and food standards within the
meat industry as it is an essential part of the legislative framework to cultivate good safety habits in all
individuals, to engender a strong safety culture in the workplace. legislation emphasis s the
importance of managing workplace health and safety proactively and stipulates that every person must
take reasonably practicable steps to ensure the safety and health of every workplace and worker. Most
legislation comes from the European Union (Brussels) where it is passed to Westminster (London) and
then down to Scotland (Edinburgh) some legislation is passed directly from the European union to
Scotland as Scotland in the 1707 the act of union abolished the separate parliaments for Scotland and
England, and created a single parliament in London (The Scottish Government) . However Scotland
still kept many of its features including its separate legal system.

The Army Of The Undead Essay
The Army of the Undead
In 1974 Chinese farmers in Lintong District, Xi an, of the Shaanxi province were digging for a well
when they unearthed fragments of clay figures and made one of the most important discoveries in art
history to date. Archaeologists were notified of the discovery and they began excavating the area for
more clues as to what was buried. The clay army of China s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was found
buried in pits near the emperor s underground tomb, over 8,000 warriors dated to approximately the
late third century BCE. The massive life sized army was once in full color and complete with weapons
such as swords and bows. Researchers have studied the various techniques and new technology that
was introduced to create the fine detail and unique features of each figure. Art historians have
speculated possible influences from other cultures such as Greek and Hellenistic that helped shape the
style of the figures. The terracotta warriors have been excavated from four main pits, other clay
figures including chariots, horses, and performers have been discovered around the emperor s tomb.
The clay army is a part of a much larger necropolis consisting of several halls, stables, and an imperial
park around the tomb mound. Qin Shi Huang s tomb hasn t been excavated out of fear of destroying
artifacts buried within by exposing them.
The discovery of the Terracotta army at first seemed to strengthen the idea of Chinas first emperor
being a ruthless warmonger who

Modern Anti Cruelty Laws For The United States
The rights of animals have been battled over for generations. Humans began t o domesticate animals
such as dogs, goats, chickens, sheep, and beasts of burden between 10,000 and 18,000 years ago.
Many people originally believed that because animals had no souls they also felt no pain; however,
this belief changed as the study of animals increased. The first animal protection law in western
civilization was adopted in 1641; making it illegal to exercise any Tirranny or Crueltie towards any
bruite Creature which are usuallie kept for man s use. (7) In 1789, the English philosopher, Jeremy
Bentham, was the first to state that animals have rights. This concept was different from the belief that
animals felt pain, in his claims animals deserved basic human rights. This new theory shook the
foundation of many peoples belief in what animal rights truly is. In 1821, Maine became the first state
to adopt modern anti cruelty laws for the U.S.; every other state eventually passed similar legislation.
It still wasn t until the 21st century that lawsuits in the interest of animals became common. The
animal rights movement has become most active in the United States, Canada, Western Europe,
Australia, and New Zealand. Animal rights organizations have been using court systems to protect
animals from being used in harmful activities, such as the agricultural industry and as being research
subjects, in the belief that they have the same basic rights as all humans. Animals have been used

Gambling has proven to be one of the more profitable things that the Mafia provides. From their own
private casinos to games for elite clientele, to booking off track bets in Belmont and Saratoga, their
profit margins are tremendous. In the 1920 s Mafia Boss Bonanno started to fix horse races, betting
huge amounts of money on the known outcomes. Fixing boxing matches was also a favorite of the
early crime lords. Sammy The Bull Gravano, John Gotti s ex Underboss states that charitable casino
events in New York from the period of 1970 1995 were most likely a front for private profiteers. A
man named Joe Pistone, an undercover FBI agent who became a made man, relates to gambling
events hosted by Cosa Nostra as having been taken care of by bribing city officials and local police
officers. In the 20th century this has proved very profitable, but in the last few years has slowed down
due to police forces cracking down heavily. Gambling, however, serves only a limited number of
people, and more money can be made on a larger spectrum.
Extortion along with the threat of violence is a very common practice among the New York Mafioso,
and the Genovese family has used these tactics to substantially gain power in the past decade. When
Lucky Lucchese was a boss, his family took income from virtually all importations into New York

The Four Characteristics And Types Of A Computer
COMPUTER COMPONENTS
The are many types and sizes of a computer. The two main sizes are:
Desktop
Portable (e.g laptops, notebooks) Computer consists of two mayor elements: HARDWARE AND
SOFTWARE
Hardware:
Computer hardware is any components you can physically touch. Examples of hardware in a computer
are the keyboard, monitor, mouse and the CPU. Hardware is directed by the software to execute any
command or instruction. A combination of software and hardware form a usable computing system.
CPU (Central Processing Unit):
brain of the computer
CPU is the computer component that s responsible for interpreting and executing most of the
commands from the computer s hardware and software. It is located on the motherboard.
The clock speed of a processor is number of calculations it can perform in a second, measured in
gigahertz (GHz). The higher the speed, the more calculations it can perform so it makes the computer
faster. These are the types of processor:
Intel Processors: dual core, i3, i5, i7 (Intel includes Celeron, Pentium and Core)
AMD Processors: A4, A6, A8, A10 (AMD includes Sempron, Athlon and Phenom)
The world s first CPU was introduced by Intel in 1971, the Intel 4004 which was a 4 bit CPU. All
types of devices use a CPU including desktop, laptop and tablet computers, smartphones.

The Hook Shot
It was my junior year and football season was over. We had won the state championship. It was time
to relax and enjoy basketball season. Basketball season was always a fun time. I was a grade younger
than most of my friends who were on the team. I was always the kid that was brought up to sit on the
bench or be the sixth man. I never really got too much playing time, however, sometimes if there was
a big man on the other team, or some sort of foul trouble for one of the seniors, I would get in. I had

Once in the locker rooms, we were all very excited. I did my usual pre game routine, running around

As I was walking around, Clark one of my team mates and usually the one that egged me on to do all

Yea, Bobby you should do it, Come on. Talmage, one of my good friends, and quarterback of the

and said, Well ladies and Gentlemen if I get in, which means we ll be winning by a lot, I will do the

Muslims Social Justice
Social justice is the right and freedom that everyone has about their chosen religion. Mahatma Gandhi
says I have no right to more than I need when my brother has less than he needs. Therefore, this quote
suggests that social justice is enjoyable if all of us have it. It s hurting for me to have freedom towards
everything while my brother next door is deprived his freedom especially that of religion. The US
Congress even passed the establishment clause which prohibited the law from interfering with the
establishment and practices of any religion. The establishment clause promotes social justice, but
many people and the legislature have broken this law. Why are the Muslims linked to many terrorist
activities? Why is terrorism involving Muslims more aired in the media than those attacks involving
non Muslims? These are the questions that need answers because stereotyping a religion is social
justice.

Type of Literary Work: Historical Novel
This book is an example of a historical Novel. It is historically accurate, and consists of characters that

Theme:Judgment Day comes to us all inevitably. We all pay for all evil and injustices of our life, yet
sometimes there will be someone so viciously wronged, that he will return like a wrath of nature, with
and unquenchable thirst for vengeance. Such a vendetta is the building block for the theme of this

Dantes is carrying a letter to Villefort s father who is a Bonapartist. In fear that this letter might hurt
his position, he throws Dantes into the weary depths of the Chateau d If. Justification for this action
comes by the means of Fernand, Danglars, and Caderousse. They lie, claiming Dantes was a
Bonapartist. For years Dantes is brought to lonely depth of despair in prison. He hardly keeps his
sanity, and becomes suicidal. His sinking heart is resurrected with the sound of a fellow prisoner

Adversity In Life Of Pi
This essay explore the idea of how in the Film Life Of Pi , adversity can make an individual adapt to
difficult circumstances. The role that adversity plays is important because it can alter the way an

circumstances, one must be able to conquer and adapt to the culture in order to survive. In the novel
turned film Life of Pi originally written by, Yann Martel and directed by, Ang Lee, the idea about the
role adversity plays in altering an individuals ability to adapt is explored.

The Legacy Of The Vietnam War Essay
Robert S. McNamara served as the Secretary of Defense from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents Kennedy
and Johnson. While historians place considerable focus on his role in the Vietnam War, McNamara
also helped shape the U.S. s greater Cold War strategy. A large component of this included the
relatively new field of nuclear politics. He understood the significance of nuclear weapons as a
strategic tool for bargaining. Through clear messaging, the weapons could create gains while never
actually being fired. However, he also proposed that nuclear war could be limited, and not inevitably
lead to global extinction. His contemporaries often dismissed this view, and indeed it remains
controversial. After 1968, the former Secretary continued to advise nuclear policy through published
papers, adding considerable fodder for our discussion of his positions on the topic. In Arms and
Influence Thomas Schelling spends significant passages describing McNamara s concept of limited
nuclear war. He quotes a speech from 1961 in which McNamara insists, principle military
objectives...should be the destruction of the enemy s military forces, not of his civilian population.
With traditional weapons, the enemy army generally has to fight its way through the defending army
before accessing civilians. Nuclear missiles eliminate this intermediate step, allowing a hostile body to
quickly destroy a great amount of civilian life without engaging the other army. McNamara advocated
a kind of limited war that

Prison Overcrowding And The United States
Nelson Mandela once said, It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails.
A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones. The prisons in
the United States have been overcrowded for many years and require a change in order to fix this.
Some of the main causes for prison overcrowding that will be covered in this paper are mass
incarceration, long sentencing, recidivism, and prisoners of drug crimes. Overcrowding of prisons in
the United States is a major issue that affects not only the prisoners themselves, but taxpayers and
politicians. Although there are many different solutions to prison overcrowding such as building more
prisons, alternative and shorter sentences, etc., the issue is still prevalent. Some feel the best way to
deal with overcrowding is to build more prisons to accommodate the large influx of prisoners. Others
feel the best mode of action to solve this problem is through shorter, and alternative sentencing, which
frees up space for serious offenders of the law. This paper argues that shorter, and alternative prison
sentences are the most effective way to reduce the prison population in the United States. Prisons and
their overcrowding is a controversial topic not to be taken lightly. There are an incredible number of
people in American prisons today. For example, according to Peter Katel, there are more people in
prison right now in the United States than any other country. The

2) Social implication of this fetish 3) Commercial implications and cashing on this fixation. Historical
Background The worship of white complexion and projection of the ideal beauty as fair skinned is not
a new concept if we try to track it down he history lane. In fact, this concept has engrained in our
physc by our culture from the ancient times. The Varna system of Social classification When Aryans
(natives of Arctic and hence fair skinned) invaded the Indus Valley, they drove the darker skinned
inhabitants down south. The ones who remained were called as das and made to do subjugated jobs as
labourers, cleaners and even undertakers. Hence in the social classification, they were allotted the
lowest rung. As time progressed and with continuous labour in the sun, the das came to be associated
with dark colour and simultaneously fair colour started to be associated with affluence and aristocracy.
Hence, the social classification, the caste system was very aptly called as the Varna system, Varna
meaning colour . Mythology If one observes ancient Indian texts on mythology and related epics, it is
easy to observe a very common pattern. Almost in all Indian texts the hero of the epic who mostly is

Example Of Superstition
TEXT OF SUPERSTITION
The superstition that I am going to tell you is a really common Malay s superstition that has been
passed down to me since I was a kid. I think you are already familiar with it because I always said this
to you when you were a kid, to make sure you returned home before sunset after spending hours
playing with your friends. During Maghrib (after sunset), Muslim kids are not allowed to play outside
their house, or a scary ghost will kidnap them . Your grandparents introduced this to me when I was
about 6 years old. They told this superstition to me every time before I went out and play with my
friends. People who live in villages are great believers in ghost and spirits. I was raised in a village
setting, so I grew up hearing a lot of stories about ghosts, spirits and black magic. This superstition is
related to ghosts, so it makes me scared, as I believe that there were really a ghost that trying to kidnap
me if I return home after sunset. Malays also believe that there are lots of spirits, Satan and ghosts
wandering around after sunset. That is why many elders, including your grandparents, tell this
superstition to make sure their kids return home early. They scared the ghosts will possess their kids.
But when I grew up, I do not believe in those supernatural things anymore. I used and told you this
superstition just to make sure you returned home early and performed your prayer on time. I do not
think that many people believe in this superstition

China s Effect On Child Labor
Imagine a twelve year old child getting up every morning going to work in a factory instead of going
to school to get an education. Yes this is the reality in China for many young children. While here is
the US many children at the age of 12 are in elementary school, children in China are working in
factory industries making toys and other goods to export out to the US and other countries. For years,
China has engaged in the use of child labor, wage levels below international standards, and unsafe
ergonomic conditions.
Some facts about China is that they are a communist country and currently the president of China is
Xi Jinping. They have the largest population of people in the world with more than 1.3 billion people.
There was a one child policy per couple in effect and that policy has recently been amended. A few of
their major cities like Dogguan, and Tianjin have been found guilty of child labor abuse
(Asianhistory.About, 2014).
China entered the WTO in December 2001. It had been a long process of negations with the WTO
formerly the GATT. For China this was a big step. The process took about 15 years before China was
accessioned into the WTO. According to an article Free trade it took this long mainly due to getting
the country s politics and policy making process to produce conditions that would allow them to
submit a bid into the WTO and eventually become part of the WTO (Harold, 2008). Once China

Comparing The Disparity Of The Motion Picture And Novel

In the adapted version of the story there were a few things that were the same. A few things that were
the same were the first night Sam started living off the land

Miami Beach
The beautiful musical trio of waves crashing onto the perfectly golden dipped shore, seagulls cawing

Whenever I am laying on the beach, I feel so serene; I feel as if I have no worries in the world. The
beach is my sanctuary.
It means I m at home. I m from Virginia Beach, and despite how far I am away from home, whether I

me, it s like therapy.
The beach has always meant the world to me, and I couldn t imagine being someone who hasn t even

sentimental value to me and whenever I go there, I do get feelings of nostalgia. I remember when my
entire family would gather at the beach, and my cousins and I would play in the waves for hours or eat
bright red watermelon as we build a fortress of a sandcastle.
Not only do I visit the beach in the summer, but I go in the fall and winter as well. Some people may
think I m crazy for going in freezing temperatures, but I don t swim; I walk around on the beach as I
feel the cold sand against my feet. My favorite time to visit the beach in the off season is during
hurricanes. I love looking at the 6 feet high waves crash onto the sand, and I love looking at the dark
colors of the sky and ocean together. However, the sand blowing around from the harsh winds make it
hard to admire everything all at once because the sand is almost piercing you like needles, but I feel

Traditional Families In The United States
American households have never been so diverse. As a result of these changes, there is no longer one
dominant family form in the U.S. Parents today are raising their children against a situation of
increasingly diverse and, for most, constantly evolving family values. The idea of the modern family
has evolved over the years because of the financial crisis which has caused both parents to look for
work, parents are no longer staying together, and same sex couples are presently able to start a family
of their own. The financial crisis has shaped the original ideologies of old typical American families.
This is because families nowadays don t have the means to support a bustling household of children
and the trending rate of stay at home parents has dropped significantly. Now both parents must
maintain a full time position just to provide for their children. For example In the 1950 s 65 percent of
all children under 15 were being raised in traditional breadwinner homemaker families. Today only 22
percent are. Over the last ten years, the average household debt has increased; Americans have needed
to make great cuts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As of 22 July 2016 same sex marriage was made legal. As many as 2 million to 3.7 million U.S.
children under the age 18 may have a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender parent, and about 200,000
are being raised by same sex couples. This shows that parents are no longer just a man and women.
But its more than that, these same sex couples have also impacted the economy for example,
California calculated that over 50,000 gay couples in the state were expected to spend about $400
million, along with $31 million in local tax revenue. The wedding industry in the U.S. is estimated to
be worth over $51 billion. This means that with these new married couples coming in to play it will
also trigger a change in the economic downturn. This also implies that the typical modern family is

Add Cake, Subtract Self Esteem Analysis
Once upon a time, women were celebrated for their curves. Weight was a symbol of wealth and
fertility in a woman. During this time, women were subjugated to being a housewife and nothing
more. As time and society progressed, a woman s prison became her body and no longer her home.
Women had the freedom to vote, work, play, but could no longer be fat. This new beauty standard of
thinness affects women in many ways. In Add Cake, Subtract Self Esteem written by Caroline Knapp,
she describes her own personal experience on how this impossible standard affects women s eating
which leads to eating disorders and an unhealthy relationship with food. In The Beauty Myth written

Beauty Myth written by Naomi Wolf is an essay written to present how the advancements of women
in social power lead to a societal backlash that lead to a woman s value being equated to her
appearance by both sexes. This devaluation of women has led to a harmful relationship with food and
women subjecting themselves to mental and physical torture to be thin. Wolf describes in the 1920s

domestic seclusion. According to Wolf, when women were in male spheres, that pleasure had to be

Competitive Advantage
Competitive advantages are strengths and strategies that keep a company ahead of its competitors. It is
hard to measure competitive advantage and harder to maintain it. Some competitive advantages are
fleeting. The successful companies are those that leverage their competitive advantage successfully
and repeatedly. As understood by us in the above example the competitive advantage that the
cyrptoses enjoy is a direct outcome of its natural habitat and hence the circumstantial gain over its
rivals. Cryptoses has strategically positioned and tactically planned its competitive advantage that
even though its fleeting, its competitive advantage is repetitive and successful. The other name for this
sort of competitive advantage could be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But nothing lasts for ever, as the market matures there are new entrants and it posses a threat to the
competitive advantage. (fig. 2) Gradually with the time competition starts meeting the customer
expectations and the competitive advantage tends to reduce. Example As the company that created the
spreadsheet for PCs, Lotus led the way through much of the 1980s with its 1 2 3. But Lotus did not
foresee the success that Windows would have and failed to develop a version of 1 2 3 for it until 1991.
By then Microsoft s Excel had moved in to dominate the market. The duration of the competitive
advantage is subjective, it depends on impact by the competitors affecting the source of competitive
advantage. Microsoft Corporation is in a class by itself when it comes to exploiting the source for
competitive advantage. IBM chose Microsoft in 1980 to write the operating system for its new
personal computers. Microsoft produced DOS for IBM and then licensed it to more than 100
companies turning out IBM clones. Since it knew more than anyone else about the operating system
for PCs, Microsoft had a head start on applications software like word processing and spreadsheet
programs. Over the years its applications programs became leaders. In the mid 1980s, Microsoft
developed the Windows operating system, giving PCs some of the power and ease of use that had
been associated with Apple computers. Microsoft

  • 4. Reasons For M Ā Ori Migration Māori urbanisation happen drastically during the late 1930s. Currently, there are more than 80% of the Māori people living in the cities with 25% of the population in Auckland city (Durie 2001:7). Money was an important reason driving the Māori population to migrate to urban centres for a better lifestyle. However, money was not the only factor for urbanisation, there are other aspects interconnected with each other such as loss of land to the crown, more employment opportunities and access to education in the cities. This essay will explore an overview of these three reasons for Māori migration, followed by a discussion on both the negative and positive impacts of migration on the traditional Māori society. The centre of Māori culture lies with the land, it engages their life with nourishment and represent individuals mana (power and authority) (King 1992:175). Whenua (land) is fundamental to Māori identity, it connects the future generations to their whakapapa (genealogy) (Williams 2004:50). Māori relied on the land to support their families. During World War Two Māori land was taken by the crown under the New Zealand Settlements Act, 1863 (Schwimmer, Forster, Parker Ritchie 1968:72). Hence, large numbers of Māori people migrates to cities after World War Two. By 1945, 26% of the Māori population moved to urban cities due to the government controlling their income and resources (Coleman, Dixon, Marē 2005:21). In addition to the restriction of land, there were less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Van Gogh s The Courtesan An Image of Utopia Beginning in the 1870s and extending into the 1900s, two major styles of art became prevalent in the country of France; Impressionism and Post Impressionism. Impressionism resulted from the feelings of chaos and instability from a major increase in population, showing scenes in a sketch like manner through a portrayal of senses. By the mid 1880s, Post Impressionism emerged, causing a return from the spontaneity that was missing traditional elements and explored expressing emotion while still using formal elements. Vincent Van Gogh used the Post Impressionist influence of Japonisme, the Japanese aesthetic associated with the new useage of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main subject, the woman, was essentially copied and enlarged from a woodblock print by Keisai Eisen featured on the cover of a popular magazine in France from May 1886. Though the background of the garden scene does demonstrate some use of perspective, the main central image of the Japanese woman remains very flat and one dimensional, a technique typical in wood block prints. The dark outlines on a majority of the environment is reminiscent of methods used to produce a Japanese print. • 6. Descriptions And Differences Of The Alpine And Desert... The world has many ecosystems which has some similarities and some differences to each other. In my essay I am going to contrast and compare the Alpine and Desert Ecosystems describing climates, soils, plant adaptations and interactions between plants and animals. First I would like to give an overview of each ecosystem and then compare their attributes. Alpine Ecosystems can be found all around the world on great mountain ranges at an altitude of 10000 feet or more just below the snow line of the mountains for example in the Andes, Alps or Rocky Mountains. Around 16% percent of the Earth s surface is part of this ecosystem. The climate here is generally very cold which leads to the ground being mostly frozen. Due to this dead plants cannot ... They also want to preserve the water they gained so they are mostly slower growing which takes less energy therefore less food which means they do not use as much water. They also developed a range of methods to scare animals away, but on the other hand they need pollinators who in these areas are more active in the night so their flowers open at this time. The main similarity between the plant adaptations in these ecosystems is that they grow small because of the lack of nutrients in the soil, the wind and the extreme weather. They also develop hairy leaves but for different reasons. In the Alpine Ecosystem they are doing it to help them keep the warmth they gained during the day and also to break the wind and provide a fairly warmer temperature around the plant. However in the Desert Ecosystem they do it to reduce water loss. Another similarity is that their leaves or flowers are turning during the day. But again it has different causes. While in Alpine regions they want to absorb more sun this was, in Desert regions they want to avoid losing water. They have similarities in growing spine or needles instead of leaves because these are more efficient in absorbing sunlight which is crucial for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As stated in lines 1 through 2the author describes the town at ease in bed , which implies that the town is being personified to make it more relatable and vivid, and show the town s insight of peace and tranquility. The author continues on by describing the boy as , Like the goddess Siva in the travel books , he saw his hand jump everywhere . Essay on Alcohol Abuse and Native Americans The impact of various kinds of substances to cultural groups has historically been precipitated by the significance of particular substances on different cultural groups (Moore, 2010).This is mainly because the long term usage of these substances leads to the integration of the consumption of the substance into the cultural patterns of the given group. One such group that has been affected by the extensive usage of a particular substance is the Native American community. According to the Associated Press (2014, August 28), as noted on the MSNBC website, out of ten deaths among the Native American population, one is Alcohol related. Additionally, the prevalence of Alcohol consumption among the Native American population relates to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in order to understand the culture of the Native Americans, it is important to study each group distinctly from the other. While the history of the Native Americans is beyond the scope of this paper, it suffices to note that the enduring cultural practices of the Native Americans have had an impact on the abuse of substances such as Alcohol (Moore Gay, 2010). The prevalence of alcohol among this cultural group has been influenced in two ways: by a misperception, social rules, norms and customs, and traditions that have normalized drinking among certain tribes. The contextual cultural experiences of most Native Americans has led to the normalization of drinking especially among age groups and related events such as among peers and when preaching. Nevertheless, the stereotype of the drunken Indian has also had an impact on the consumption levels in this cultural group (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2011). A study of the Navajo Indians led to the conclusion that stereotype can lead members of the group to consider excessive drinking as a normal part of the cultural practices of a particular cultural group. Indeed, the Native American population has been influenced by such stereotypes which traverse the history of the Indians, for example, in as far as consumption of alcohol is concerned (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2011). Ancient Egypt is an ancient civilization in the deserts of Africa. Ancient Mummies are fascinating due to why Egyptians mummify, how they mummify, and the burial process. Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead for special reasons. Egyptians had a wish, the wish to live forever. They believed that after they died a new life began. Egyptians believed that everyone had a ba, and a ka. A ba is a soul, and a ka is a invisible twin of the person. Egyptians believed that when a person died, his/her ... The corpse s brain was removed and most likely thrown away. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the brain was the least important organ in the body. After 40 days passed by, the natron packs were removed. The dried, withered body was then swabbed clean and caressed with oils, spices, and resin. They eye sockets were corked with linen and closed. The nostrils were packed with beeswax. Then the arms were crossed, and the fingernails and toenails were hidden in caps of gold. The embalming cut, (the cut where the inner organs were taken out) was then stitched together. The mummy was decorated with jewels, gold, and precious stones like the Eye of Horus. Then the body was deliberately bound with long, narrow bands of linen. The fingers, toes, and legs were all wrapped individually. Linen shrouds were arranged between the layers of binding. Every few layers of linen were glued together with resin. After twenty layers of binding and linen shrouds, the mummy s body returned it it s normal size. The Army Of The Undead Essay The Army of the Undead In 1974 Chinese farmers in Lintong District, Xi an, of the Shaanxi province were digging for a well when they unearthed fragments of clay figures and made one of the most important discoveries in art history to date. Archaeologists were notified of the discovery and they began excavating the area for more clues as to what was buried. The clay army of China s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was found buried in pits near the emperor s underground tomb, over 8,000 warriors dated to approximately the late third century BCE. The massive life sized army was once in full color and complete with weapons such as swords and bows. Researchers have studied the various techniques and new technology that was introduced to create the fine detail and unique features of each figure. Art historians have speculated possible influences from other cultures such as Greek and Hellenistic that helped shape the style of the figures. The terracotta warriors have been excavated from four main pits, other clay figures including chariots, horses, and performers have been discovered around the emperor s tomb. The clay army is a part of a much larger necropolis consisting of several halls, stables, and an imperial park around the tomb mound. • 12. Modern Anti Cruelty Laws For The United States The rights of animals have been battled over for generations. Humans began t o domesticate animals such as dogs, goats, chickens, sheep, and beasts of burden between 10,000 and 18,000 years ago. Many people originally believed that because animals had no souls they also felt no pain; however, this belief changed as the study of animals increased. The first animal protection law in western civilization was adopted in 1641; making it illegal to exercise any Tirranny or Crueltie towards any bruite Creature which are usuallie kept for man s use. (7) In 1789, the English philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, was the first to state that animals have rights. This concept was different from the belief that animals felt pain, in his claims animals deserved basic human rights. This new theory shook the foundation of many peoples belief in what animal rights truly is. In 1821, Maine became the first state to adopt modern anti cruelty laws for the U.S.; every other state eventually passed similar legislation. It still wasn t until the 21st century that lawsuits in the interest of animals became common. The animal rights movement has become most active in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Animal rights organizations have been using court systems to protect animals from being used in harmful activities, such as the agricultural industry and as being research subjects, in the belief that they have the same basic rights as all humans. • 22. The Legacy Of The Vietnam War Essay Robert S. McNamara served as the Secretary of Defense from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. While historians place considerable focus on his role in the Vietnam War, McNamara also helped shape the U.S. s greater Cold War strategy. A large component of this included the relatively new field of nuclear politics. He understood the significance of nuclear weapons as a strategic tool for bargaining. Through clear messaging, the weapons could create gains while never actually being fired. However, he also proposed that nuclear war could be limited, and not inevitably lead to global extinction. His contemporaries often dismissed this view, and indeed it remains controversial. After 1968, the former Secretary continued to advise nuclear policy through published papers, adding considerable fodder for our discussion of his positions on the topic. In Arms and Influence Thomas Schelling spends significant passages describing McNamara s concept of limited nuclear war. He quotes a speech from 1961 in which McNamara insists, principle military objectives...should be the destruction of the enemy s military forces, not of his civilian population. With traditional weapons, the enemy army generally has to fight its way through the defending army before accessing civilians. Nuclear missiles eliminate this intermediate step, allowing a hostile body to quickly destroy a great amount of civilian life without engaging the other army. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones. The prisons in the United States have been overcrowded for many years and require a change in order to fix this. Some of the main causes for prison overcrowding that will be covered in this paper are mass incarceration, long sentencing, recidivism, and prisoners of drug crimes. Overcrowding of prisons in the United States is a major issue that affects not only the prisoners themselves, but taxpayers and politicians. Although there are many different solutions to prison overcrowding such as building more prisons, alternative and shorter sentences, etc., the issue is still prevalent. Some feel the best way to deal with overcrowding is to build more prisons to accommodate the large influx of prisoners. Others feel the best mode of action to solve this problem is through shorter, and alternative sentencing, which frees up space for serious offenders of the law. This paper argues that shorter, and alternative prison sentences are the most effective way to reduce the prison population in the United States. The book that had later gotten adapted to become a movie is about how a young boy named Sam Gribley goes to leave his family of sailors to live off the land on his grandfather s farm. Usually when novels become movies somethings that happened in the novel might not happen in the film. That is why I am going to write about the disparity of the motion picture and novel. In the adapted version of the story there were a few things that were the same. A few things that were the same were the first night Sam started living off the land ... • 31. Miami Beach The beautiful musical trio of waves crashing onto the perfectly golden dipped shore, seagulls cawing as they fly away to identify their next prey, and the shrills of children create a symphony for my ears. Whenever I am laying on the beach, I feel so serene; I feel as if I have no worries in the world. The beach is my sanctuary. It means I m at home. I m from Virginia Beach, and despite how far I am away from home, whether I m on Miami Beach or just a beach off of a lake, the beach gives off a domestic feeling. When I spent a week away from home in July at a summer camp on a lake, I didn t have any contact with my family at all. It was tough to be far away from home for what had seemed like a long time; however, the music blaring from the enormous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I feel so happy and warm laying on the beach because it just radiates positivity. I constantly look around and see such bright, radiant colors of beach umbrellas, and you can hear children s laughter as they boogie board the beautiful blue waves back to shore. The beach is just a little getaway, and for me, it s like therapy. The beach has always meant the world to me, and I couldn t imagine being someone who hasn t even seen the ocean. Virginia Beach is all I ve ever known since I was born. The beach has such a sentimental value to me and whenever I go there, I do get feelings of nostalgia. I remember when my entire family would gather at the beach, and my cousins and I would play in the waves for hours or eat bright red watermelon as we build a fortress of a sandcastle. Not only do I visit the beach in the summer, but I go in the fall and winter as well. Some people may think I m crazy for going in freezing temperatures, but I don t swim; I walk around on the beach as I feel the cold sand against my feet. My favorite time to visit the beach in the off season is during hurricanes. I love looking at the 6 feet high waves crash onto the sand, and I love looking at the dark colors of the sky and ocean together. However, the sand blowing around from the harsh winds make it hard to admire everything all at once because the sand is almost piercing you like needles, but I feel like it s such a great experience ... • 32. Traditional Families In The United States American households have never been so diverse. As a result of these changes, there is no longer one dominant family form in the U.S. Parents today are raising their children against a situation of increasingly diverse and, for most, constantly evolving family values. The idea of the modern family has evolved over the years because of the financial crisis which has caused both parents to look for work, parents are no longer staying together, and same sex couples are presently able to start a family of their own. The financial crisis has shaped the original ideologies of old typical American families. This is because families nowadays don t have the means to support a bustling household of children and the trending rate of stay at home parents has dropped significantly. Now both parents must maintain a full time position just to provide for their children. For example In the 1950 s 65 percent of all children under 15 were being raised in traditional breadwinner homemaker families. Today only 22 percent are. Over the last ten years, the average household debt has increased; Americans have needed to make great cuts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As of 22 July 2016 same sex marriage was made legal. As many as 2 million to 3.7 million U.S. children under the age 18 may have a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender parent, and about 200,000 are being raised by same sex couples. This shows that parents are no longer just a man and women. But its more than that, these same sex couples have also impacted the economy for example, California calculated that over 50,000 gay couples in the state were expected to spend about $400 million, along with $31 million in local tax revenue. The wedding industry in the U.S. is estimated to be worth over $51 billion. This means that with these new married couples coming in to play it will also trigger a change in the economic downturn. This also implies that the typical modern family is evolving more than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The anxiety that women feel leads to an insatiable desire to be thin no matter the cost because of fear of being fat, and the negative connotation associated with being fat. The Beauty Myth written by Naomi Wolf is an essay written to present how the advancements of women in social power lead to a societal backlash that lead to a woman s value being equated to her appearance by both sexes. This devaluation of women has led to a harmful relationship with food and women subjecting themselves to mental and physical torture to be thin. Wolf describes in the 1920s was the first time that women became preoccupied with dieting and thinness after receiving the right to vote. Some competitive advantages are fleeting. The successful companies are those that leverage their competitive advantage successfully and repeatedly. As understood by us in the above example the competitive advantage that the cyrptoses enjoy is a direct outcome of its natural habitat and hence the circumstantial gain over its rivals. But nothing lasts for ever, as the market matures there are new entrants and it posses a threat to the competitive advantage. (fig. 2) Gradually with the time competition starts meeting the customer expectations and the competitive advantage tends to reduce. But Lotus did not foresee the success that Windows would have and failed to develop a version of 1 2 3 for it until 1991. By then Microsoft s Excel had moved in to dominate the market. The duration of the competitive advantage is subjective, it depends on impact by the competitors affecting the source of competitive advantage. Microsoft Corporation is in a class by itself when it comes to exploiting the source for competitive advantage. IBM chose Microsoft in 1980 to write the operating system for its new personal computers. Microsoft produced DOS for IBM and then licensed it to more than 100 companies turning out IBM clones. Since it knew more than anyone else about the operating system for PCs, Microsoft had a head start on applications software like word processing and spreadsheet programs. Over the years its applications programs became leaders. In the mid 1980s, Microsoft developed the Windows operating system, giving PCs some of the power and ease of use that had been associated with Apple computers. Microsoft ... The poll industry has recently made two high profile mistakes the 2014 election and a mishap involving 2016 presidential candidates Clinton and Sanders. Even the most prestigious polling companies predicted the wrong outcomes. This has led to a nationwide discussion about the reliability of polls.
