and Waldman s Our Past ) is described both literally as traveling by foot, train and/or boat as well
as figuratively in that the characters are traveling to intangible destinations.
As far as physical examples of traveling, the most obvious one would be in Hicok s poem, Go
Greyhound . In the poem, Hicok discusses his observations and experiences while riding a
Greyhound bus from Des Moines through Arizona. Though he does not directly state that he is
traveling, the lines Hope s a smaller thing on a bus, (1 Hicok) and As we entered Arizona, I
thought I smelled the ocean, (2 Hicok) show that he is traveling literally from one place to another.
Something I d like to mention in reference to the second line I quoted would be that the line itself
is an impossibility that brings contrast to the poem. Arizona is nowhere near the shores of the
ocean so for Hicok to smell the ocean would be impossible and, yet, he mentions it so casually in
the poem. This quote, therefore, shows both the theme of mobility as well as the descriptive use of
contrast.

Surprise Ending in Descartes In the book Discourses on the Method and the Meditations, author
Rene Descartes famously questions the existence of humanity. His most famous quotation, the
one for whom he is most remembered is I think therefore I am (Descartes 11). According to this
idea, so long as a being has the ability to think then they existed. Animals have brains and
therefore they must exist. In order to truly, exist, to be a thinking entity, a person or organism
must utilize the ability granted to them by their mind. This is the focus of much of this text, the
nature of existence and the line between what is true and what we only imagine or perceive to be
true. For the majority of the text, the philosopher asks questions in trying to formulate his own
identity and indeed whether or not he existed as all. It would be assumed that the end of the book
would be a conclusion of this internal dialogue where Descartes definitively states his position on
human existence. However, Descartes instead devotes the end of the text to a wholly new concept:
namely he applies the question of existence to a being above humanity. At the end of the text,
instead of continuing on with these questions Descartes instead discusses the idea of God and
whether or not He exists. At the time of the Royal Society which Descartes was a member of, the
researchers and philosophers were trying to understand everything about the world, something

The Sirens Of Titan
The Sirens of Titan The book I chose for my third book report is The Sirens of Titan , a 326 page
novel by Kurt Vonnegut. I chose this book because initially the synopsis caught my interest and
I had heard a great deal about the writing of Vonnegut although, I had never actually read any of
his works. I thought, based on the theme of the story, that it would be an interesting read;
despite my tendency to read books outside of the science fiction genre, I figured I would try
something new and give this book a chance. The title is a peculiar one to me seeing as the story
hardly addresses the sirens in full, let alone gives enough significance to them to be worthy of the
title. The sirens are only brought up on occasion and do not add anything too vital to the story. I
only have the vaguest of ideas as to why Vonnegut would select this as his title. All I can interpret
from it is that it s a reflection on how the protagonist cares for only insignificant and petty things
like wealth and attraction rather than any imperative and genuine world issues. The story takes
place in the 22nd century on the planets of Earth, Mars, briefly on Mercury, and on Titan, the moon
of Saturn. The story centers around Malachi Constant, a rich, egocentric, young man with twisted
morals who has had everything in his life handed to him. He cares little for the welfare of others
and this is exemplified throughout the duration of the entire novel. The other main character is the

Language is often defined as a system of communication, a way for humans to interact with one
another. Language itself can hold a great amount of power. It can express one s emotion, show
love or hate, and could give meaning. For example an object has no identification unless the
power of language is wielded to provide it a name based on its ability and function. Language
often has a great influence on culture and religion. This is shown greatly in the cultures of the
Hebrews and the Greeks which are known for their famous texts Genesis and The
Metamorphoses , two pieces of literature that explains the creation of man from different ways
of belief. The book of Genesis from the Hebrew Bible is used in the practice of Judaism and
Christianity and is the most well known text of this culture. It is also believed to be the very first
book written in the Bible. The Metamorphosis is a story taken from what is called Greek Mythology
, where multiple Gods are believed to exist and each of them holding power over different things.
Both texts use the power of language in different ways to express emotion and bring things to life.
Normally, words are used in language as communication, and a way to describe objects. Objects
