Milton, born December 9, 1608, is considered one of England s greatest poets. But
Milton was not only a poet, he was also a political figure. Milton supported the
British Civil War and the Puritan government of Oliver Cromwell. Knowing this
background, it is no surprise that many of Milton s writings contain his strong
religious and political beliefs. Sonnet XV, a plea to Lord Fairfax to help the new
Commonwealth government be successful, displays Milton s concern with holy and
virtuous ideals, his disdain for the rule of the English monarchy, and his pro Puritan

In Sonnet XV Milton also shows his dislike for the king. He refers to the king as a
serpent (line 8) and the king s followers as hydra heads (line 7) or monsters. In the
sonnet, he also refers to the king s government as full of Avarice and Rapine (line
14), greed, looting, plunder, and corruption. He further showed his disdain for the
monarchy, when he wrote Eikonoklastes ( image breaker ), which was the Puritan
government s official response supporting the former King s execution (Danielson
15). Milton did not just hate the monarchy, he supported a republican government.
Milton supported the Puritan ideals of religious freedom and establishment of a
more democratic system of government where all adult males had the right to vote
(Norbrook 109). In 1649, Milton was asked to work to support the new Puritan
government (Danielson 14). He worked for 11 years as a secretary in the
Commonwealth government. He wrote articles and pamphlets that defended the new
government and attacked its adversaries (Danielson 15). Sonnet XV shows these
ideas as Milton pleads with Lord Fairfax to help rid the Avarice and Rapine (Line
14) of the Royalist government. Additionally, Milton saw Public Fraud (line 13) as
shameful and as such, the Public Faith (line 12), which Milton equated with National
Honor (Honigmann 142), had to be removed from that fraud for the new government
