The Market Revolution Of The African-American Slavery In...
In the United States, slavery had an overwhelming impact on their political, social, and economical.
Jamestown, Virginia in 1619, the first African slaves were brought into the United States. Reasons
were because the tobacco, sugar, rice, and coffee fields were expanding which led to increasing the
demand for labor. The Atlantic slave tradewas an inhuman systematic importation of slaves
between the African traders, American planters, and the European merchants bargaining over
human lives which led to the Middle Passage. 1675 1775, the slaves were the backbone of
monoculture labor and so it was put into law to keep the Africans as slaves. So prevalent was this
Italian operated slave trade that the word slave was derived from the word Slav, name for people
from Slavic countries (Williams 3). In both seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the African
American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. After the War of 1812,
three historical processes unleashed by the Revolution, which were the following: the spread of
market relations, the westward movement of the population, and the rise of a vigorous political
democracy. The same steamboats and canals that were used by millions of farmers to send their
goods to the markets also facilitated the growth of the slave based cotton plantations in the South.
In the first half of the nineteenth century, the market revolution swept over the United States. Both
the westward expansion and the market

Plains Indian Culture
The term Plains Indian refers to a group of indigenous people who lived on the interior plains of
both Midwest America and the southern Canada. Their culture was traditionally nomadic as they
survived by hunting and gathering, and often followed the migration of the American Bison. The
Bison provided them with their main resource as they used its hide, bones, fat, and fur to make
clothing, housing, and tools. Teepees were their traditional form of housing (Roth, 1923)because
they were easily constructed and then dismantled to fit the Plains Indian s transient lifestyle.
Several other unique aspects of their lifestyle have become a part of the stereotypical American
Indian depicted in film and literature such as their reliance on domesticated... Show more content on

During the 19th century, Plains Indians began to frequently sew small glass beads to their garments
and other personal items. The attractive beads were manufactured in the sophisticated glass shops
of Venice and reached the West by long and winding trade routes that began in Europe and crossed
the Atlantic to connect with seaboard commerce in the fledgling United States (Loeb, 1990). A few
beads were then carried across the country by early explorers such as Meriwether Lewis and
William Clark, while others found their way into trading systems controlled by indigenous
people. Some Native American groups of the northern West actually acquired European beads
before they ever saw European people (Loeb, 1990). Permanent trading posts soon provided
women with a steady supply of beads, and Venetian glass blowers were beginning to emphasize
a tiny product called a seed bead, which they produced in dozens of colors. As a result of these
changes, the craft women who lived in the middle of the nineteenth century began to refine the
art of beading using their ample bead supplies in a rainbow of colors. Within decades the
Blackfeet, Crow, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Kiowa, as well as neighboring plateau and Great Basin
groups, were evolving distinctive styles and encrusting horse gear, dress yokes, vests, bags, cradle
tops, and a whole array of other impressive items with beads

Developing a learning tool to encourage education in a stem subject
Introduction
The aim for this project as has been mentioned is to develop a learning tool to encourage education
in a stem subject, I narrowed this down to developing a game that would help a student learn
maths specifically. Since then I have narrowed this further and have specified that this would be
for around the academic year 7 so around the age of 11 but would still be appropriate for 10 or
12 year olds. To achieve this aim the objectives will be for one to train in game development as
well doing research to help establish the game mechanics or gamification elements wanted in the
game.

As with a lot of articles on the subject of gamification this paper states that the intent of this report
is to define gamification, deconstruct the process of gamifying a learning a learning program,
explore the limitations, and review successful implementations of gamification . In section 2 What
is Gamification the paper gives the example of gamification in action, it talks about an initiative

How Breast Cancer Has Changed My Life
The environment in which you live in will greatly impact your life; People, however, are all
impacted differently. Personally, I know that my life has been changed by many different events
throughout my life. Some events can go unnoticed while some are impossible to miss. Looking
back at my life I can find many events that pushed me in the direction I am traveling in now but
one event has changed my life forever. The death of my aunt Nadia was the most important event
in my life and it both made me who I am today and who I will be in the future. Breast canceris the
development of cancerous tumors that form in the cells of the breasts. Thirteen years ago, my aunt

interested in science and medicine. However, this tragic event in my life influenced me the most
to pursue a career in the medical field and become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Ever since that day
I have gained a strong desire to acquire knowledge about cancer and many other diseases. After
she passed away, at first, I was only interested in finding a cure for cancer and had only a very
narrow view of the science field. As I entered high school and really began to explore different
sciences I found that becoming a doctor will allow me to not only try to find a cure but to help
many other people afflicted with many other diseases. With my new found sense of direction, I
started to deeply explore everything to do with the medical field. I entered a program at Holy

Modern Day Drivers Research Paper
Since the dawn of motorized transportation, the modern world has utilized its convenience of
interconnectivity. As subsequent generations utilize the vehicle s convenience, more drivers
populate roadways and inherently increase the risk of traffic incidents due to inattentiveness and
excessive speed. These modern day drivers are protected by the safety systems of the vehicles and
roads, driver education and enforced trafficlaws. Law enforcement currently relies on speed traps,
guilty conscience and traffic calming measures to control traffic safety. In the face of this current
technological world, these methods of enforcement prove to be non uniform and unreliable. With
speed continually being a major cause to many types of crashes and fatalities,... Show more content

Even though the importance of such may be unknown, drivers understand that lawful speed
limits exist at least from the day they earn their permit. From a national survey conducted by the
National Highway Safety and Traffic Association, 30% of drivers strongly agreed that there is
no excuse to exceed the posted limit; 18% somewhat agreed. Likewise, 67% strongly agreed and
24% somewhat agreed that everyone should obey the speed limit because it s the law [1, 34].
Drivers want to respect speeding laws because it they trust other drivers will do the same, but
whether the drivers actually choose to obey the laws is another story. From the same survey, the
most frequent reasons for speeding were 35% for being late, 31% for emergencies, 10% for not
paying attention, 7% for being in a hurry and 7% for keeping up with traffic flow [1, 43]. Drivers
of this fast paced nation may sometimes set aside their judgment and break the law to meet its
demands. Enforcement of speed regulations is directed to protect all drivers with uniform
limitations. We all know that this doesn t happen. These are ideal systems. So what s the real

Reflective Reflection In Nursing
In the last few weeks I have learned that conflict will never come easy to me and it will always
be a work in progress. I feel like I have understood the importance of communication skills, ways
of approaching people, and how to perform self care after an event. Throughout this semester I
have been working on a hand scarf . This is a scarf that I wove by hand, and I thought it would
be a great way for me to help understand conflict due to its complexity, patience, and pattern. To
add, I realize that I still am not an expert with conflict, but I feel like I have met some of my
goals that I mentioned in my past paper. I have met one of my goals by realizing that not all
clients are going to be able to make a connection with me, no matter how hard I try. The reason I
was able to understand this is because we live in a very diverse world where there are many
opinions, values, beliefs, vulnerabilities, and assumptions. With this diversity, I feel like people
are not always going to like how I implement my nursing career, but it is my job to realize the
discomfort within my patient and make changes that best suit his or her needs. I hope to focus on
this throughout my practice placements and remind myself of the differences that surround me.
With relation to the scarf I made, it consists of several color shades and one distinct pattern that I
attempted to follow. While I was making this scarf I began to get frustrated because the pattern was
never identical to the one that I had

Jacqueline Förster Case Entitlement
Case Note Case C 158/07 Jacqueline Förster v Hoofddirectie van de Informatie Beheer Groep
Förster Judgment Facts of the case The Förster judgment concerns the legal dispute between
the student Jacqueline Förster and the Executive Board of the IB Groep. Förster was a German
national who moved to the Netherlands for her studies. During her studies she worked to support
her living costs and was able to receive a study grant from the IB Groep, an administrative body.
The IB Groep annulled the maintenance grant with respect to the period from July to December
2003 and requested that Förster repay the excess sums. Ms. Förster brought an action before
Alkmaar District Court. That action was held to be unfounded on two grounds. First, Ms. Förster
could no longer be regarded as a worker since she had not had any real and genuine employment
during that time period. Second, Ms. Förster could not claim entitlement to a maintenance grant
because she had not been integrated into Dutch society. Ms. Förster appealed against that
judgement before the Centrale Raad van Beroep. She claimed that she was already sufficiently
integrated into Dutch society to be able to claim a maintenance grant. In the alternative, she
submitted that she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

nationals of other member States of a requirement of five years prior

The Secession Of The United States
In November, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected U.S. President with only 40 per cent of the
popular vote. South Carolina had threatened to secede from the Union if Lincoln won the
election. The state made good their threat by seceding from the Union on December 20, 1860.
Mississippi and Florida followed in early January, 1861. The Alabama State Legislature directed
Governor A. B. Moore to call a state convention in Montgomery on January 7, 1861, to debate
the question of secession from the Union. On January 11, after four days of hot debate, an
ordinance of secession was adopted by a vote of 61 39 and Alabama became the fourth state to
secede from the Union. The two delegates from Lauderdale County voted against secession as did
most of the delegates from North Alabama.
Anticipating secession, several counties in North Alabama, East Tennessee, North Georgia, and
North Mississippi talked of forming a neutral state called Nickajack if secession passed. Nothing
came of the talk. However thousands of Alabamians, mostly from the northern counties, enlisted in
the Union Army. There were six white Union regiments raised in Alabama: 1st Alabama Cavalry,
1st Heavy Artillery Battery, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Infantry Regiments. Many others left the state
to join Union units, or they joined Union units as they passed through the state. Many former
Lauderdale County slaves left their owner s plantation and joined U.S. regiments (i.e., the U.S.

Canadian Food Guide Research Paper

Canadian Food Guide Assignment
The Canadian Food Guide has changed over time due to fit the needs of Canadians as more
scientific research and information has been found about nutrition and how to achieve overall
health. For example in 1982, the Canadian Food Guide implemented a statement which encouraged
Canadians to limit fat, sugar, salt and alcohol as a method to combat diet related diseases (Canada,
n.d). The food guide has also been altered over history to incorporate individuals with different
diets based on culture, religion, and preferences. This was demonstrated in 1977, where they

Concerning the physical addition of showing Canadians to reduce the intake of sugary drinks,
this is verified by Quebec Health Groups, in which they state soda cans will come with a
warning that drinking them may lead to obesity, diabetes and cavities (Quebec, n.d.). The Senate
has even put forth the motion to tax sugary foods and drinks (Zimonjic, 2016). This makes it an
even more crucial to include it on the actual food guide. This reinforces the idea for the food
guide to have a stricter stance on high calorie and high sugar foods like soda. Many dieticians have
also agreed that drinking fruit juice does not have many benefits compared to eating fruits or just
water, because of low fibre, high sugar and high calorie counts (Needs, 2016). Therefore, I think the
food guide should remove juice from their suggestion list. A research finding that supports my
recommendation for the reduction in consumption of red meat is from the National Post, they
suggest in their article that For decades, governments and scientists in the U.S. and Canada have
warned of the harmful effects of saturated fat on the heart and cardiovascular system, urging
consumers to shun butter, eggs and red meat (Canada, n.d.). Another study from Harvard School of
Public Health (HSPH) researchers continue by saying that

Effects Of English Language Proficiency

English Language Proficiency
English Language proficiency is the ability of an individual to speak or perform in English
Language. English Language is a compulsory subject in both primary and secondary schools in
Malaysia. For those local undergraduates who plan to pursue their tertiary education at
Malaysian universities, they are required to register a stipulated credit hour of English courses

Open Ended Questions In Research Essay
Questionnaires and surveys are useful for determining the attitudes, characteristics, profiles, beliefs
from a sample of people. In designing a questionnaire that focuses on open ended questions the main
concern should be on determining the way the responses will be quantified.
Open ended questions are often used in research to clarify closed questions or as a means of
generating ideas. In both cases it is generally assumed that the longer and more detailed the
response to an open ended question the better (Graziano et al, 2000). However, relatively little is
known about the effect of factors such as question wording or questionnaire design on the response
to open ended questions.
There is a need to ask open ended questions when the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Irrationality In King Lear
What defines madness? Is it a state of being that is derived from deterioration of the brain, or
perhaps, extremely foolish behavior that creates mayhem and chaos? I presume it is a
collaboration of the two, for without sane cognitively the basis for irrationality would not be
present, such is the case of King Lear. A man riddled with madness inside and out, yet through his
state of frenzy and turmoil, Lear unveils unexpected guidance, validity, and enlightenment. It seems
impossible for two opposing ideas to have subsequent logical soundness, but it is the goal for this
essay to clearly defend the paradox that exist between madness and truth. According to two different
articles, first by Jude Arnold s article, How do we judge King Lear, and second by Alexander
Truskinovsky, Literary Psychiatric Observation and Diagnosis Through the Ages: King Lear
Revisited, both authors find cause and reasoning for this underlining connection. King Lear,
illustrates a paradox of how madness illuminates the truth by demonstrating how an insane character
can find clarity in the misery of his misfortunes through his actions. Therefore, the author mirrors
this reasoning by demonstrating the consequences of Lear s lunacy and foolish behavior, as an eye
opener for elucidating the truth to him. Lear s deeds provide key insight into the subsequent
misfortunes that introduce the paradox created by Shakespeare. Tell me, my daughters...Which of

Class C Airspace
There was no need for airspace regulation in the US up until 1903 when the Wright brothers began
the modern age of air flight with a homemade aircraft. Then in 1905, the work of the Wright
brothers accumulated into the first practical aircraft that and subsequent improvements that allowed
aviation technology to develop into commercial aircraft as well as war capable planes which were
used in World War I.
Early aviation was quite dangerous as a result of no advanced navigational technologies or
automated flight systems. A great deal of human error was possible with these early aircraft.
During these times, pilots flew close enough to the ground so that they could tell where they were

A class C airspace must have met a basic physical infrastructure of a control tower and a radar
controlled approach system. The altitude limit for class C airspace is usually 4000 ft above the

miles and 20 miles, respectively. Although prior authorization/permission is not needed, aircraft that
want to enter class C airspace must establish radio communication with local air traffic control
prior to entering the airspace or be faced with trespassing. Aircraft pilots wishing to enter this
area do not need special certification but a speed limit of 230 mph must be obeyed below the
altitude of 2500 feet and the immediate area surrounding class C airspace. Pilots must be willing
to follow commands from ATC including requests not to enter the airspace or to vacate the
airspace. Class C airspace designation is only to be effective while the control tower and radar

Social Anxiety Research Paper
Over the course of my life, I have been subject to social anxiety. Being around others often times
makes me really uncomfortable. This really doesn t necessarily apply in it s fullest extent when I
m conversing with one person directly, but when talking to a group of people I sometimes stammer
and lose focus. This anxiety, though something that may seem trivial, is something that has always
held me back from involving myself in larger activities. Although I have been inhibited by my
anxiety, I have taken steps to, or at the very least attempt to, involve myself with more things in
order to remedy my situation. There have been times where I will have to do some trivial thing in
class, such as give a presentation or talk about something, where I get incredibly nervous. I have
tried, at times, to push through and appear confident and stoic as a remedy to anxiety. This solution

Offshore Outsourcing
In analyzing the second reason listed for why outsourcing is used; inability to attract the highest
caliber of employees to job functions that may be peripheral to the organization s core discipline ,
companies employ a different kind of outsourcing tactic. This reason leads to offshore outsourcing
solutions. If a company cannot attract high caliber domestic employees to job functions secondary
to their main function then they seek help where labor may be less expensive and more efficient.
Offshoring attracts much more criticism when it comes to outsourcing. When a business considers
leveraging offshore outsourcing in order to gain a competitive advantage there are a few definitive
reasons. Many of those reasons revolve around an inability to hire domestic labor for the required
job as mentioned above. The U.S. has high living standards along with strict health regulations that
don t exist abroad. China s lack of environmental standards is another differentiating factor that
gives their workforce a competitive advantage. As a result, China is able to keep their wages so
low that it s ultimately incomprehensible for business owners to justify not hiring there.
China is one of our biggest labor competitors. The reason many US companies go to China for
outsourcing is again, because of their workforce s willingness to operate at low costs. Michael
Zimmerman describes this as a disparity in worker tolerance . Where the low wages found in
China are far lower than U.S.

Oppose Susan s Proposal For Relocation With The...
1.I feel the President and Board members should reject Susan s proposal to relocate to Florida. A
feasibility study should be conducted to determine the viability of WPP s relocation before
proceeding with the development to Philadelphia, Charlotte or Washington, DC. According to
Susan, The Bank of America would sponsor a questionable Warrior to Work program, agreeing to
hire 50 veterans per year as full time employees, regardless of qualifications. The board is faced
with a conflict of interest, which might benefit Susan and her husband. Conflicts of interest among
a board of directors can take several forms and this situation leaves no room for negotiation. It is a
best practice to avoid or minimize conflicts of interest. Non profit board members should be
discharged of their duties in accordance with their inability act in the best interests of the
organization. The presentation by Susan outlined her questionable ethics and commitment to the
pursuing the best interests of WWP. I do not think there is room for negotiation because Susan
refused to acknowledge John s discovery of lower Jacksonville and equally attractive properties.
2.Poor performance or questionable ethics can get anyone fired from their job and a board chair

action. The chair of a board of directors is often a well regarded member and who is expected to be

Objective
Email Encryption is the very important topic of todays need. Because it provides the proper
security to the message. And in now days everybody wants the proper security for our message so
that the original message as it is read by the recipient that are send by the sender without any
changes/alternation in the message. So this is the very important topic to cover up and secure our
messages from unauthorized user s access. That provide the security to our communication. So, we
can easily communicate without any afraid of hacking of data.
INTRODUCTION: Encryption is the most effective way to provide the data security. It is a process
which converts original information into a difficult to interpret form. The original information is
known as plain text and the converted information/message is commonly known as cipher text.
In now a days you email delicate, individual and business data to your recipients, then encryption
is likely a need. But still 99% of all emails movement goes

introduced to two very different families whose paths cross in the future, the Hamiltons and the

Benefits Of A Executive Compensation
Introduction
Over a long period of time, many shareholders in various companies have been complaining about
the high executive compensation in the companies. They believe that such executives are draining
the resources of such companies at the expense of the shareholders.
Despite the non binding votes from the shareholders against high levels of executive pay, many
companies have given a deaf ear to them. Reduction of executive compensation has been a major
challenge to many companies. There are various impediments in effecting a reduction in executive
compensation.
Hiring and retaining top caliber executives. In the modern cut throat competition business world,
companies are looking for the best executives, who can lead the company into success. To achieve
such an objective, companies have to offer higher executive compensation.
In addition, so as to retain the best executives who are still working for the company, there is need
to maintain a higher level of executive pay, otherwise such top talent will be lured away by other
companies. This may have the adverse effects of leading the company into poor performance, and
consequently, failure. Therefore, it is paramount that executive compensation is maintained at its
best for the overall good of the company ((Hartzell Starks, 2003).
Reinforcement of succession planning process. It is important that an organization prepares top
notch executives to take over leadership of the company in the future. Without

Work Breakdown Structure
Work breakdown structure
A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) in project management and systems engineering, is a tool
that defines a project and groups the project s discrete work elements in a way that helps organize
and define the total work scope of the project.[1]
[pic]
[pic]
Example of a work breakdown structure of an aircraft system.
A Work breakdown structure element may be a product, data, a service, or any combination. WBS
also provides the necessary framework for detailed cost estimating and control along with
providing guidance for schedule development and control. Additionally the WBS is a dynamic tool
and can be revised and updated as needed by the project manager.[1]

History
The concept of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) developed with the Program Evaluation and
Review Technique (PERT) in the United States Department of Defense (DoD). PERT was
introduced by the U.S. Navy in 1957 to support the development of its Polaris missile program. [1]
While the term work breakdown structure was not used, this first implementation of PERT did
organize the tasks into product oriented categories.[5]
By June of 1962, DoD, NASA and the aerospace industry published a guidance document for the
PERT/COST system which included an extensive description of the WBS approach. [6] This
guide was endorsed by the Secretary of Defense for adoption by all services.[7] In 1968, the DoD
issued Work Breakdown Structures for Defense Materiel Items (MIL STD 881), a military standard
mandating the use of work breakdown structures across the DoD. [8] This standard established top
level templates for common defense materiel items along with associated descriptions (WBS
dictionary) for their elements.
The document has been revised several times, most recently in 2005. The current version of this
guidance can be found in Work Breakdown Structures for Defense Materiel Items (MIL HDBK
881A).[9] It includes guidance for preparing work breakdown structures, templates for the top three
levels of typical systems, and a set of common

As your lady is aware the advertisement identified that the offer was to remain open until the
end of March. One would likely presume this meant the offer was open until the 31st of the
month and this was the day on which the appellant expressed his wish to withdraw his offer. The
31st however fell upon a Saturday, a day on which the shop was closed for trading. The law in
question must therefore consider if the remained open until the last day of March or the offer
did in fact finish on the last day of trading in march, which would have been Friday the 30th. The

Although this case involved an invitation to tender and not an invitation to treat, of notable
significance, was that the defendant was bound to check the mail on the last day. And as he did

tender, and not an offer, similarities between the case details are evident. Although respondent is
not bound to consider all offers as a result of an invitation to treat, due to him already entering into
part negotiations by stating he would consider the appellants offer. The respondent may therefore
be bound to check the post on the final day of the offer incase any letters had arrived from the

remembered for betting on baseball while playing/managing the Reds. Rose denied these

most often used by Rose during this time period was flat out denial. While denying the

behind this is that shortly after the Dowd Report; Rose voluntarily placed himself on baseball s

Analysis Of The Movie Return Streak And Winning A...
Manassas is an inner city high school in North Memphis Tennessee with a poorly funned football
program that holds a 110 year losing streak. Each individual athlete faces internal and external
challenges of growing up in a poor and dangerous neighborhood with little or no parental guidance
at all. Coach Bill Courtney devotes the majority of his time to Manassas s football program and
also steps in as a father figure to many of these boys and unites the team. In return, this causes the
team to perform better on the field, thus, breaking Manassas s losing streak and winning a playoff
game. In this documentary there was a mental skill that stood out the most, in particular, group
dynamics/ cohesion. Throughout the team s football season coach Courtney helps the boys feel
closer with their fellow teammates, thus, resulting in each individual to look out for one another.
With that said, in the movie the team worked together to achieve a common goal which was to win
a playoff game while also working on individual interpersonal relationships with other teammates.
With that in mind, different elements of task and social cohesion are emphasized in this
documentary. The theoretical development of group dynamics/ cohesion was exhibited through
O.C. Brown. To illustrate, in the beginning of the film O.C. Brown was a short tempered kid who
only looked out for himself, however, throughout this documentary O.C. Brown begins to improve

Experiment #6
Date of the experiment: 01/29/2016
Title: KINETICS OF ALCOHOL OXIDATION
Drexel University Winter 2016
Introduction:
This report concerns the experiment of determining the order of reaction and the kinetic rate
constant of alcohol oxidation. This experiment relates to the knowledge of chemical kinetics, the
application of Beer s Law, and other calculations.
Chemical kinetics involves the examination of reaction rates, which are the speeds of chemical
reactions. There are chemical reactions which proceed in long periods of time as well as chemical
reactions proceeding in short periods of time. Regarding reaction rates, the reaction order and
kinetic rate constant are considered.
Take a general reaction in solution for instance: aA+bB⇌Product(s) The reaction rate is calculated
using the following function: rate=kгЂ–[A]гЂ—^x гЂ–[B]гЂ—^y
Where [A] and [B] are the concentrations of A and B in the solution, unit: mol/L or M; x and y is
the reaction order of A and B respectively; k is the kinetic rate constant, its unit depends on the
order of the reaction.
The values of x and y are the partial order corresponding to A and B. The sum of x and y is the
overall reaction order. The values of x and y can be either negative or positive. They can also be
either integer or fractional. The reaction rate can be understood as how fast the reactants are
consumed or how fast the

Pulp Fiction is a black comedy crime film written and directed Quentin Tarantino (1994). The
film s narrative follows the unpredictable actions and reflections of two hit men who
philosophically meditate out loud about the Bible, loyalty, and McDonald s hamburgers
(Corrigan, White, 368). The movie goes against the three act structure of classic films as the
story is told out of chronological order making the film so memorable to its viewers. Tarantino s
film begins in a coffee shop and also ends in the same shop. In the beginning of the film, it
appears to be a soft, moist, shapeless matter of mass but as the movie progresses the audience can
take away much more from the mundane acts they view on screen. The film s odd narrative... Show

Pulp Fiction employs various devices such as dialogue and visual motifs that provide narrative
clarity and unity along the lines associated with classical Hollywood cinema (Bailey, 52). The
dialogue in the coffee shop indicates that the film has more to do with the mundane aspects of a life
of crime than it does with the glamour, danger, and intrigue typical of thrillers or film noir
(Howley). The film s dialogue can range from absolutely pointless to completely captivating
moments. These conversation establishes character and character relations early in the film in an
entertaining fashion. This is depicted when Vincent and Jules are having a normal conversation
about Amsterdam and foot massages directly before they are about to commit multiple murders.
This organic conversation establishes the characters as reasonably ordinary people to the audience
till they arrive at the apartment and appear stone cold. Tarantino s Pulp Fiction clarity illustrates the
style of mundane versus the extreme. A motif that remains constant in the film is the bathroom.
Various of the film s major events occur while someone is using the restroom. For a majority the
film this phenomenon occurs to Vincent. When he uses the restroom in the diner, Jules has a heart
to heart with the robbers, Pumpkin and Honey Bunny. Next, Vincent is using the bathroom at Mia s

marginalized in the world community.
Globalization, as commonly discussed, refers to the explosive growth in the past 20 to 25 years of
huge multinational corporations and vast pools of capital that have crossed national borders and
penetrated everywhere. It was born out of the technological revolution and the crisis of
overproduction that followed the last two decades. Technological revolution in electronics and
information processing brought the world a whole new range of electronic consumer products. It
brought down the costs of trade and communications, triggered an over accumulation of productive
capital and resulted to overproduction in the major capitalists

Fiduciary Acceptance Definition
The fiduciary administration is the responsibility of the trustee for managing the trust property. The
trustee has all of the powers over trust property that a legally competent, unmarried individual has
with respect to individually owned property. But it is the beneficiaries, not the trustee, that bear the
consequences of the trustee s exercise of these powers. Meanwhile, by making a transfer in
testamentary trust rather than outright leave them to their heirs, a settlor ensures that the property
will be managed and distributed in accordance with his wishes which expressed in the terms of the
trust rather than the whims of the beneficiaries. A testamentary trust also allows the settlor to
empower the trustee to decide how the trust property... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the view above, beneficiaries may bear high risk for the consequences of intentionally or
negligently improper actions of trustee. So there must be some measures to protect the
beneficiaries from mismanagement or misappropriation by the trustee. In deciding whether and
how to exercise the powers of the trusteeship, the trustee is subject to and must act in accordance
with the trustee s fiduciary duties. The fiduciary duties come from the law of fiduciary
administration, whose purpose is to induce the trustee to adhere to the terms of the trust and to act
prudently and in the best interests of the beneficiaries. Trustees are subject to overarching
fiduciary duties of loyalty and prudence. The fiduciary duties are the highest standard of care, at
the same time, trustees have to be subject to a host of subsidiary duties, such as keeping adequate
records and disclosing information about the trust to the beneficiaries. If trustee breaches the
fiduciary duties, he or she may be removed from office, and need to account for the ill gotten
profit. The beneficiaries are entitled to damages, even if they suffered no

Couple Therapy
Gender differences in couples work
Couple therapy often refers to the common negative process, of pursuer and withdrawer, in order to
understand the relational dance. This is the process where one partner purses the other through
emotional demands, criticism, and complaints, while the other retreats through withdrawal,
defensiveness, and passive interaction (Christensen, Heavey,1990). Many theorists have identified a
gender linkage with this pattern, suggesting women present as the demanding, pursuer, while men
assume the role of the distant, withdrawer (Christensen, Heavey,1990; Mornells, 1979). There is a
belief among some theorists that this pattern results from different personality characteristics of
men and women, and therefore impacted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Same sex couples report having less family support than heterosexual couples, this doesn t appear
to be completely to do with estrangement from family of origin, rather many couples contend
with family relationships that are difficult and stressful (Rostosky et al., 2004). Rarely do same
sex couples enjoy immediate, consistent, and pervasive emotional support and acceptance upon
disclosure of their relationship to their families of origin (Rostosky et al., 2004). Many theorists
believe the coming out stage is necessary in the development of a healthy identity. The coming
out stage often is a time of great stress as individuals anticipate the reactions of their family of
origin. Rostosky s (2004) research indicates that same sex couples perceived support from family
of origin no matter how tenuous has a powerful impact on same sex couple, even after the initial

Outsourcing and the US Economy Essay
Outsourcing Don t Get Bangalored?
As the world has gotten smaller in terms of trade, outsourcing has become a hot topic in much
political and economic debate in the United States. An Associated Press Ipsos poll in May 2004,
found that 69 per cent of Americans thought that outsourcing hurts the US economy while only 17
per cent thought it helped . President Bush s chief economic advisor Greg Mankiw has stated
outsourcing...is something that we should realize is probably a plus for the economy in the long run

A glance at staticstics
Is the public concern over outsourcing valid?
The most cited official projection outsourcing is by Forrester. It is estimated that outsourced US
jobs will grow from about 400,000 in 2004 to 3.3 million (recenty revised to 3.4 million) by
2015 which seems quite significant. But on a yearly basis this accounts for about 250,000 jobs
but in perspective the number is small compared to the total US employment of 137 million. It
actually only constituate less than 2 per cent of 15 million Americans who lose their jobs each
year . Goldman Sachs estimates that offshoring has accounted for 500,000 million lay offs in the
past three years. A study by Ashok Deo Bardhan and Cynthia A. Kroll at the University of
California, Berkeley indicates that up to 14 million Americans now work in occupations that are
at risk of being outsourced . Forrester also estimated that 300,000 US jobs have been outsourced.
While the Commerce Department 400,000 new jobs, which leaves a net result of 100,000 new US
jobs . In addition, an Economic Policy Institute in New York announced that 144,000 new jobs were
created in August 2004 . Summarizing the numbers, it seems that outsourcing will have a positive
effect on the overall US economy.

Symbolism In Fahrenheit 451 Analysis
Andrei Tarkovsky said, A literary work can only be received through symbols, through concepts
for that is what words are . In Fahrenheit 451 s society, the reading of books is illegal and
punishable by death. The protagonist Guy Montag stands against the burning of the books and
attempts to be happy with his life, even though he is a fireman. Ray Bradbury, uses many literary
devices in his story, but the most important device is symbolism. In Fahrenheit 451, a handful of
symbols advance the plot by giving the novel a deeper meaning that what appears on the surface.
Each symbol included in the Fahrenheit 451 is a piece of Guy Montag s life that is helping his
journey. In part one of Fahrenheit 451, the first symbol to appear is the hand. When Bradbury
mentions Montag s hands, he is foreshadowing that the hand will become an important metaphor
throughout the book His hands had been infected, and soon it would be his arms. He could feel
the poison working up his wrists and into his elbows and his shoulders, and then the jump over
from shoulder blade to shoulder blade like a spark leaping a gap (Bradbury 38). The spark of
doing what is right is moving from Montag s hands to his entire body. He states that his hands
were ravenous and were hungering for books. Montag does not know why he is stealing the
books, but his hand is moving without any thought. Before he begins to question society, Montag
s hands are the force that carries him through his workday. They pump the kerosene and light the
torch while Montag holds a unmoving smile on his face. When he steals the books, he says that
his hands are acting upon themselves with curiosity. His hand represents that Montag is thirsting
for a knowledge that only books can provide. Montag, unlike Mildred, is not satisfied with the
knowledge that is given from the televisions and society. Montag s hands symbolize his
consciousness to do what is right and the force that is pushing him to search for knowledge. For
the firemen in Fahrenheit 451, the idea of spreading a fire that consumes knowledge and culture
is a great feeling. It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see
things blackened and changed. With the brass novel in his

Effects Of Regime Type On The Duration Of War And War On...

[Title]
Introduction What is the effect of regime type on the duration of war and war s impact on
political leaders? And how do these effects range in comparison to other variables, such as
wealth, military power, or alliances? I hypothesize the following: longer wars have a worse impact
on democracies than on dictatorships and mixed regimes, and as a result are shorter. In the first
section of this paper, I define key terms used throughout the paper and review literature and theory
related to the topic of war and regime type. In the next section, I
Background and Literature Review Using [cite] s definition of regime type, I have identified
three types of regimes in this paper: democracies, dictatorships, and mixed regimes. Democracies
are defined as regimes that do not repress its people and include the highest proportion of the
populace; dictatorships are highly repressive and exclude most of the population; and mixed
regimes use moderate repression and exclude a significant proportion of their populace (CITE). To
understand the reasoning behind my hypothesis, I turn to the democratic and inter democratic
peace theories, in which my hypothesis is fundamentally rooted. These theories come from the
liberal school of thought in international relations and posit that democracies do not, or are less
likely, to go to war, and do not go to war with other democracies (Elman 758). There is much

Abstract
This paper will explore the role of labor unions within the Unites States. The effectiveness of Unions
and how they are important for the stability of the American economy. Unions provide many
benefits to employees due to the working relationship with management and politicians in the U.S
Congress. Some of the benefits that provided by unions are, paid vacations, pensions, an 8 hour
work day with breaks and social security benefits. Unions are continually fighting with politicians
and the State Government for better benefits. Will discuss the role of HRM s employee relations
within the organizations and what role the government should play.
Increased Role of U.S. Labor Unions In the United States unions have impacted the workforce by
creating better benefits for all works. Unions work to improve the working conditions in the
workplace by working with the organization to make sure they are following the labor laws of the
State and Federal Government. Labor unions date back to the eighteenth century and the industrial
revolution in Europe. (Union Plus, n.d.) Unions exploded in the United States around the
nineteenth century with the founding of the National Labor Union (NLU) in 1866. (Union Plus,
n.d.) According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015 the overall union

New Age Dating Sociology
Historically dating, navigating relationships and ending relationships had been quite the difficult

individuals communicate amongst each other. For this reason, many researchers are interested in
how gender plays a role in an individual s concepts of new age dating, flirting, hook up culture,

Acquaintances can now be better established through digital profiles, knowledge can be readily
shared, thoughts and feelings are better formulated, and distance between the parties allows for
better managing of the situation. This is especially true in regards to breaking up within
relationships. The distance aspect allows the individual to disassociate from the other person with
minimal knowledge to the outcome. Ambiguity and social habits remain the same with new age
media but given the explicit, slow response and distant nature of new media in comparison to in

conclusion outright ignores falsifying personalities and information completely, such as in
predatory behaviours, the argument that communication between two parties with romantic interest

Write An Essay On Deaf Culture
A boy named Steven has never listened to the sound of a radio, or heard the voice of his mother and
father. Since these situations are typical for a hearing person, they are taken for granted. These are
everyday scenarios that will never be a part of a deaf person s life. 360 million people worldwide
have disabling hearing loss (1), and 32 million of these are children. (Deafnessand hearing loss Fact
sheet, February 2017). Since having a hearing disability is common in society, everyone should
learn how to communicate, and interact with the deaf people through their culture. So, what
exactly is deaf culture? Deaf culture differs from hearing culture by having different language,
social beliefs, art, education, and technology. Having a culture that caters to the deaf allows people
to not focus on the incapability to hear. Instead this lets deaf individuals to be themselves without
judgement. Also, making their daily tasks easier in a hearing world.
What is the sense of Hearing? Technically research says: Hearing depends on a series of complex
steps that change sound waves in the air into electrical signals. Our auditory nerve then carries
these signals to the brain . (How Do We Hear? July 2015). Hearing allows people to live without
boundaries. To respect and appreciate the real nature of deafness, first one must appreciate their
current state of hearing. Every day, people hear different simple sounds of birds chirping, traffic,
voices of others, the radio

  • 2. The Market Revolution Of The African-American Slavery In... In the United States, slavery had an overwhelming impact on their political, social, and economical. Jamestown, Virginia in 1619, the first African slaves were brought into the United States. Reasons were because the tobacco, sugar, rice, and coffee fields were expanding which led to increasing the demand for labor. The Atlantic slave tradewas an inhuman systematic importation of slaves between the African traders, American planters, and the European merchants bargaining over human lives which led to the Middle Passage. 1675 1775, the slaves were the backbone of monoculture labor and so it was put into law to keep the Africans as slaves. So prevalent was this Italian operated slave trade that the word slave was derived from the word Slav, name for people from Slavic countries (Williams 3). In both seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the African American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. After the War of 1812, three historical processes unleashed by the Revolution, which were the following: the spread of market relations, the westward movement of the population, and the rise of a vigorous political democracy. The same steamboats and canals that were used by millions of farmers to send their goods to the markets also facilitated the growth of the slave based cotton plantations in the South. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the market revolution swept over the United States. Both the westward expansion and the market ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Plains Indian Culture The term Plains Indian refers to a group of indigenous people who lived on the interior plains of both Midwest America and the southern Canada. Their culture was traditionally nomadic as they survived by hunting and gathering, and often followed the migration of the American Bison. The Bison provided them with their main resource as they used its hide, bones, fat, and fur to make clothing, housing, and tools. Teepees were their traditional form of housing (Roth, 1923)because they were easily constructed and then dismantled to fit the Plains Indian s transient lifestyle. Several other unique aspects of their lifestyle have become a part of the stereotypical American Indian depicted in film and literature such as their reliance on domesticated... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the 19th century, Plains Indians began to frequently sew small glass beads to their garments and other personal items. The attractive beads were manufactured in the sophisticated glass shops of Venice and reached the West by long and winding trade routes that began in Europe and crossed the Atlantic to connect with seaboard commerce in the fledgling United States (Loeb, 1990). A few beads were then carried across the country by early explorers such as Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, while others found their way into trading systems controlled by indigenous people. Some Native American groups of the northern West actually acquired European beads before they ever saw European people (Loeb, 1990). Permanent trading posts soon provided women with a steady supply of beads, and Venetian glass blowers were beginning to emphasize a tiny product called a seed bead, which they produced in dozens of colors. As a result of these changes, the craft women who lived in the middle of the nineteenth century began to refine the art of beading using their ample bead supplies in a rainbow of colors. Within decades the Blackfeet, Crow, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Kiowa, as well as neighboring plateau and Great Basin groups, were evolving distinctive styles and encrusting horse gear, dress yokes, vests, bags, cradle tops, and a whole array of other impressive items with beads ... Personally, I know that my life has been changed by many different events throughout my life. Some events can go unnoticed while some are impossible to miss. Looking back at my life I can find many events that pushed me in the direction I am traveling in now but one event has changed my life forever. The death of my aunt Nadia was the most important event in my life and it both made me who I am today and who I will be in the future. • 10. Modern Day Drivers Research Paper Since the dawn of motorized transportation, the modern world has utilized its convenience of interconnectivity. As subsequent generations utilize the vehicle s convenience, more drivers populate roadways and inherently increase the risk of traffic incidents due to inattentiveness and excessive speed. These modern day drivers are protected by the safety systems of the vehicles and roads, driver education and enforced trafficlaws. Law enforcement currently relies on speed traps, guilty conscience and traffic calming measures to control traffic safety. In the face of this current technological world, these methods of enforcement prove to be non uniform and unreliable. With speed continually being a major cause to many types of crashes and fatalities,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the importance of such may be unknown, drivers understand that lawful speed limits exist at least from the day they earn their permit. From a national survey conducted by the National Highway Safety and Traffic Association, 30% of drivers strongly agreed that there is no excuse to exceed the posted limit; 18% somewhat agreed. Likewise, 67% strongly agreed and 24% somewhat agreed that everyone should obey the speed limit because it s the law [1, 34]. Drivers want to respect speeding laws because it they trust other drivers will do the same, but whether the drivers actually choose to obey the laws is another story. From the same survey, the most frequent reasons for speeding were 35% for being late, 31% for emergencies, 10% for not paying attention, 7% for being in a hurry and 7% for keeping up with traffic flow [1, 43]. Drivers of this fast paced nation may sometimes set aside their judgment and break the law to meet its demands. Enforcement of speed regulations is directed to protect all drivers with uniform limitations. We all know that this doesn t happen. These are ideal systems. So what s the real ... • 11. Reflective Reflection In Nursing In the last few weeks I have learned that conflict will never come easy to me and it will always be a work in progress. I feel like I have understood the importance of communication skills, ways of approaching people, and how to perform self care after an event. Throughout this semester I have been working on a hand scarf . This is a scarf that I wove by hand, and I thought it would be a great way for me to help understand conflict due to its complexity, patience, and pattern. To add, I realize that I still am not an expert with conflict, but I feel like I have met some of my goals that I mentioned in my past paper. I have met one of my goals by realizing that not all clients are going to be able to make a connection with me, no matter how hard I try. The reason I was able to understand this is because we live in a very diverse world where there are many opinions, values, beliefs, vulnerabilities, and assumptions. With this diversity, I feel like people are not always going to like how I implement my nursing career, but it is my job to realize the discomfort within my patient and make changes that best suit his or her needs. I hope to focus on this throughout my practice placements and remind myself of the differences that surround me. With relation to the scarf I made, it consists of several color shades and one distinct pattern that I attempted to follow. While I was making this scarf I began to get frustrated because the pattern was never identical to the one that I had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jacqueline FГ¶rster Case Entitlement Case Note Case C 158/07 Jacqueline FГ¶rster v Hoofddirectie van de Informatie Beheer Groep FГ¶rster Judgment Facts of the case The FГ¶rster judgment concerns the legal dispute between the student Jacqueline FГ¶rster and the Executive Board of the IB Groep. FГ¶rster was a German national who moved to the Netherlands for her studies. During her studies she worked to support her living costs and was able to receive a study grant from the IB Groep, an administrative body. The IB Groep annulled the maintenance grant with respect to the period from July to December 2003 and requested that FГ¶rster repay the excess sums. Ms. FГ¶rster brought an action before Alkmaar District Court. That action was held to be unfounded on two grounds. First, Ms. FГ¶rster could no longer be regarded as a worker since she had not had any real and genuine employment during that time period. Second, Ms. FГ¶rster could not claim entitlement to a maintenance grant because she had not been integrated into Dutch society. Ms. FГ¶rster appealed against that judgement before the Centrale Raad van Beroep. She claimed that she was already sufficiently integrated into Dutch society to be able to claim a maintenance grant. • 13. The Secession Of The United States In November, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected U.S. President with only 40 per cent of the popular vote. South Carolina had threatened to secede from the Union if Lincoln won the election. The state made good their threat by seceding from the Union on December 20, 1860. Mississippi and Florida followed in early January, 1861. The Alabama State Legislature directed Governor A. B. Moore to call a state convention in Montgomery on January 7, 1861, to debate the question of secession from the Union. On January 11, after four days of hot debate, an ordinance of secession was adopted by a vote of 61 39 and Alabama became the fourth state to secede from the Union. The two delegates from Lauderdale County voted against secession as did most of the delegates from North Alabama. Anticipating secession, several counties in North Alabama, East Tennessee, North Georgia, and North Mississippi talked of forming a neutral state called Nickajack if secession passed. Nothing came of the talk. However thousands of Alabamians, mostly from the northern counties, enlisted in the Union Army. There were six white Union regiments raised in Alabama: 1st Alabama Cavalry, 1st Heavy Artillery Battery, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Infantry Regiments. Many others left the state to join Union units, or they joined Union units as they passed through the state. Canadian Food Guide Research Paper HFA4U1 Ms. Minos Abzhara Sasikumar Canadian Food Guide Assignment The Canadian Food Guide has changed over time due to fit the needs of Canadians as more scientific research and information has been found about nutrition and how to achieve overall health. For example in 1982, the Canadian Food Guide implemented a statement which encouraged Canadians to limit fat, sugar, salt and alcohol as a method to combat diet related diseases (Canada, n.d). The Senate has even put forth the motion to tax sugary foods and drinks (Zimonjic, 2016). This makes it an even more crucial to include it on the actual food guide. This reinforces the idea for the food guide to have a stricter stance on high calorie and high sugar foods like soda. In designing a questionnaire that focuses on open ended questions the main concern should be on determining the way the responses will be quantified. I presume it is a collaboration of the two, for without sane cognitively the basis for irrationality would not be present, such is the case of King Lear. A man riddled with madness inside and out, yet through his state of frenzy and turmoil, Lear unveils unexpected guidance, validity, and enlightenment. It seems impossible for two opposing ideas to have subsequent logical soundness, but it is the goal for this essay to clearly defend the paradox that exist between madness and truth. According to two different articles, first by Jude Arnold s article, How do we judge King Lear, and second by Alexander Truskinovsky, Literary Psychiatric Observation and Diagnosis Through the Ages: King Lear Revisited, both authors find cause and reasoning for this underlining connection. King Lear, illustrates a paradox of how madness illuminates the truth by demonstrating how an insane character can find clarity in the misery of his misfortunes through his actions. Therefore, the author mirrors this reasoning by demonstrating the consequences of Lear s lunacy and foolish behavior, as an eye opener for elucidating the truth to him. Lear s deeds provide key insight into the subsequent misfortunes that introduce the paradox created by Shakespeare. Tell me, my daughters...Which of you shall we say doth love us most? PERT was introduced by the U.S. Navy in 1957 to support the development of its Polaris missile program. [1] While the term work breakdown structure was not used, this first implementation of PERT did organize the tasks into product oriented categories.[5] By June of 1962, DoD, NASA and the aerospace industry published a guidance document for the PERT/COST system which included an extensive description of the WBS approach. • 36. Analysis Of The Movie Return Streak And Winning A... Manassas is an inner city high school in North Memphis Tennessee with a poorly funned football program that holds a 110 year losing streak. Each individual athlete faces internal and external challenges of growing up in a poor and dangerous neighborhood with little or no parental guidance at all. Coach Bill Courtney devotes the majority of his time to Manassas s football program and also steps in as a father figure to many of these boys and unites the team. In return, this causes the team to perform better on the field, thus, breaking Manassas s losing streak and winning a playoff game. In this documentary there was a mental skill that stood out the most, in particular, group dynamics/ cohesion. Throughout the team s football season coach Courtney helps the boys feel closer with their fellow teammates, thus, resulting in each individual to look out for one another. With that said, in the movie the team worked together to achieve a common goal which was to win a playoff game while also working on individual interpersonal relationships with other teammates. With that in mind, different elements of task and social cohesion are emphasized in this documentary. The theoretical development of group dynamics/ cohesion was exhibited through O.C. Brown. To illustrate, in the beginning of the film O.C. Brown was a short tempered kid who only looked out for himself, however, throughout this documentary O.C. Brown begins to improve on his cohesion with the team and also reveals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The following will explain my opinion on the learningof all children and how the UDL principles apply to this. By providing multiple ways of representation this allows students to view things through a different lens. This can also allow for other students to find a way of learning that better suits them. This experiment relates to the knowledge of chemical kinetics, the application of Beer s Law, and other calculations. Chemical kinetics involves the examination of reaction rates, which are the speeds of chemical reactions. There are chemical reactions which proceed in long periods of time as well as chemical reactions proceeding in short periods of time. Regarding reaction rates, the reaction order and kinetic rate constant are considered. Take a general reaction in solution for instance: aA+bB⇌Product(s) The reaction rate is calculated using the following function: rate=k〖[A]〗^x 〖[B]〗^y Where [A] and [B] are the concentrations of A and B in the solution, unit: mol/L or M; x and y is the reaction order of A and B respectively; k is the kinetic rate constant, its unit depends on the order of the reaction. The values of x and y are the partial order corresponding to A and B. The sum of x and y is the overall reaction order. The values of x and y can be either negative or positive. They can also be either integer or fractional. The reaction rate can be understood as how fast the reactants are consumed or how fast the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The film s narrative follows the unpredictable actions and reflections of two hit men who philosophically meditate out loud about the Bible, loyalty, and McDonald s hamburgers (Corrigan, White, 368). The movie goes against the three act structure of classic films as the story is told out of chronological order making the film so memorable to its viewers. Tarantino s film begins in a coffee shop and also ends in the same shop. Pulp Fiction employs various devices such as dialogue and visual motifs that provide narrative clarity and unity along the lines associated with classical Hollywood cinema (Bailey, 52). The dialogue in the coffee shop indicates that the film has more to do with the mundane aspects of a life of crime than it does with the glamour, danger, and intrigue typical of thrillers or film noir (Howley). The film s dialogue can range from absolutely pointless to completely captivating moments. These conversation establishes character and character relations early in the film in an entertaining fashion. In Fahrenheit 451, a handful of symbols advance the plot by giving the novel a deeper meaning that what appears on the surface. Each symbol included in the Fahrenheit 451 is a piece of Guy Montag s life that is helping his journey. In part one of Fahrenheit 451, the first symbol to appear is the hand. When Bradbury mentions Montag s hands, he is foreshadowing that the hand will become an important metaphor throughout the book His hands had been infected, and soon it would be his arms. He could feel the poison working up his wrists and into his elbows and his shoulders, and then the jump over from shoulder blade to shoulder blade like a spark leaping a gap (Bradbury 38). The spark of doing what is right is moving from Montag s hands to his entire body. He states that his hands were ravenous and were hungering for books. Montag does not know why he is stealing the books, but his hand is moving without any thought. Before he begins to question society, Montag s hands are the force that carries him through his workday. They pump the kerosene and light the torch while Montag holds a unmoving smile on his face. When he steals the books, he says that his hands are acting upon themselves with curiosity. His hand represents that Montag is thirsting for a knowledge that only books can provide. Montag, unlike Mildred, is not satisfied with the knowledge that is given from the televisions and society. Montag s hands symbolize his consciousness to do what is right and the force that is pushing him to search for knowledge. And how do these effects range in comparison to other variables, such as wealth, military power, or alliances? I hypothesize the following: longer wars have a worse impact on democracies than on dictatorships and mixed regimes, and as a result are shorter. In the first section of this paper, I define key terms used throughout the paper and review literature and theory related to the topic of war and regime type. In the next section, I Background and Literature Review Using [cite] s definition of regime type, I have identified three types of regimes in this paper: democracies, dictatorships, and mixed regimes. Democracies are defined as regimes that do not repress its people and include the highest proportion of the populace; dictatorships are highly repressive and exclude most of the population; and mixed regimes use moderate repression and exclude a significant proportion of their populace (CITE). To understand the reasoning behind my hypothesis, I turn to the democratic and inter democratic peace theories, in which my hypothesis is fundamentally rooted. These theories come from the liberal school of thought in international relations and posit that democracies do not, or are less likely, to go to war, and do not go to war with other democracies (Elman 758).
