Finding help in the
subject guide
What is a subject guide?
• Also called Library guides (or LibGuides)
• They are online help tools that are tailored to each
course / subject
• They are accessible any time any where – so are a
valuable resource for help!
Avoiding plagiarism
Plagiarism
You commit plagiarism in written work
when you use another person’s
sentences, ideas or opinions without
acknowledging them as being from
that other person.
This can take multiple forms:
OBVIOUS FORMS:
Buying / borrowing a paper and
copying it
Hiring somebody to write for you
Cutting and pasting text
Direct translations
Citing sources you didn’t use
LESS OBVIOUS FORMS:
Not giving proper credit
Not referencing images, etc
Improper paraphrasing
Failing to give a proper reference
Not acknowledging outsourcing (eg.
Data)
So what should you reference
Reference anything that is not your own idea.
What about policies, bills, etc?
• Both statements of FACTS and statements of LAW
need to be referenced:
Statement of Fact Statement of Law
NATO has been deployed into
the Sudan a number of times
to assist with the refugee
crisis.
Countries are prohibited from
using force to threaten the
political or territorial integrity
of another country.

Bourke (2007: 135) discusses that public
libraries tend to be the central hub of
activity in a community.
Bourke, C. 2007. Public libraries:
partnerships, funding and relevance.
Australasian Public Libraries and
Information Services. 20(3): 135-139.Public libraries tend to be the central
hub of activity in a community (Bourke,
2007: 135).
Citing
• Learn how to cite
• Choose your referencing style
• Follow the guidelines set out
• Consult your lecturer, your subject librarian and the
Writing Centre
• Practice makes perfect!
• Why should you cite?
• Adding authority to your work
• Demonstrates your knowledge of the topic
• Demonstrates your reading depth and breadth
• Protects you against committing plagiarism
Remember
• Start your essays/assignments/projects as soon as
possible
• Don’t rush
• Keeping track
• Cite liberally
Referencing:
The what,
why, when, where,
how and the which
What
•Referencing is acknowledging
the source of information or
ideas you have used in your
writing.
•When you don’t reference your
work, you commit plagiarism.
•The use of other people's
ideas and writing without
acknowledgement
•Plagiarism involves taking
another person's ideas, words
or inventions and presenting
them as your own
•Rewording another person's
work, without acknowledging
its source, is also plagiarism.
Why
•To distinguish your own ideas
from that of the author’s;
•To cite different points of view;
•To validate what you are
writing;
•To inform readers of the scope
and depth of your reading;
•To emphasize a position that
you agree or disagree with;
•To refer to other research that
leads up to your study;
•To highlight a pertinent point by
quoting the original;
•To enable readers to consult the
original source;
•To avoid plagiarism
When
•When you are using or referring
to somebody else's words or
ideas;
•When you use information
gained through interviewing
another person;
•When you copy the exact
words;
•When you reprint any diagrams,
illustrations, charts, and
pictures;
•When you use ideas that others
have given you in conversations
or over email.
•No need to reference
•When you are writing about
your own experiences; your
own observations; results of
an experiment ; your own
insights; your own thoughts;
your own conclusions about a
subject;
•When you are using "common
knowledge" - folklore,
common sense observations,
shared information within
your field of study or cultural
group.
Where
• In-text referencing:
• The format of the in-
text reference depends
on the referencing style
used.
• The reference list, a list
of works cited or a
bibliography:
• A complete reference
must also appear in a
reference list at the end
of your work.
How
• Make sure that you
gather all of the
information required to
construct the reference
at the time you gather
the information or ideas.
• Make sure that you keep
the reference details with
the information from
that source throughout
your research.
• Make sure that you know
which referencing style
your department or
lecturer requires you to
use.
• Make sure that you know
how to correctly apply
the referencing style
required.
• Allow plenty of time to
integrate the references
into your work.
When
• Which referencing style
is the right one?
• Consult your academic
department on their
preferred referencing
style.
• Referencing styles used
at the University of Cape
Town
• Please visit:

Referencing Guide
UCT Author-Date
Referencing Guide
• There is a detailed referencing guide on the UCT
Author-Date style available on the library website
• The UCT Author-Date style is an in-text style of
referencing, with a full bibliography at the end
• It is similar to the Harvard style and other Author-
Date styles
Research: Where do you start?
• Identifying search topics, identifying gaps in
knowledge and constructing a search strategy
• This allows you to cover all bases and collect
relevant information
Research Steps
Identify Possible Keywords
Construct Search Strategy
Identify Databases
Perform Your Search
Recognising different
publication types
You can recognise the publication type
by the reference
• Each type of reference tells you what it is
• It can be
• books
• chapters in books
• articles in journals
• conference papers, proceedings
• bills, acts, legislation
• and many more

Boolean Logic
Identifying Keywords
• Broader v narrow terms
• Synonyms
• Drug abuse vs narcotic abuse vs substance abuse
• British v US terminology and spelling
• Labor v Labour
Planning
Social
Development
Planning
Community
Development
Constructing Search Strategy
• Search Language
• Natural Language
• Terms and Connectors (Boolean Operators)
• Constructing search phrases
• Keywords
• Terms and Connectors
• Boolean Operators
• Phrases
• Brackets
• Truncation / Stemming
• Proximity searches
Using Boolean Operators
• Boolean Operators are used to connect and define
the relationship between your search terms.
• When searching electronic databases, you can use
the Boolean operators to either narrow or broaden
your record sets.
• The three Boolean operators are AND, OR and
NOT.
The Boolean Operator “AND” (narrows
search)
= Hit Using the Boolean
Operator ‘AND’ for the
topic “Abuse of cocaine”
Cocaine
Abuse
The Boolean Operator ‘OR’ (synonyms,
alternatives, broadens search)
= Hit
Strategies success
Using the Boolean
Operator ‘OR’ for
the topic
“Strategies for
success”
The Boolean Operator ‘NOT’ (exclude
certain words from your search)
= Hit
Community
organisations
collaboration
Using the Boolean
Operator ‘NOT’ to
exclude
collaboration from
the topic
“Community
organisations”
Phrases
• More than one word contained in “ ” to search for a
specific phrase
• “substance abuse”
• Certain databases use ( ) to signify phrases instead
Brackets
• Useful to combine search phrases into one using
brackets
• Using the topic “Successful strategies for community
organisations” the searches can be
• Strategies AND “community organisations”
• Success AND “community organisations”
• Using brackets:
• (strategies OR success) AND “community organisations”
Brackets
• Brackets avoid ambiguity:
• Strategies OR success AND “community organisations”
• It will not include arrest in the search
= Hit
success
Community
organisations
strategies
Truncation / Stemming
• Truncation involves the shortening of the word (*)
to allow the inclusion of plurals and similar phrases
• Eg. dev* for development BUT
• dev* - development, developmental,
developments, etc
BUT ALSO devotion, devilish, develops, devested
Best truncation would be
development*
Proximity Searches
• Good to use for phrases: “substance abuse”
• Abuse of a substance
• Substance that is there for abuse
• Using a proximity search you can search for your
keywords in proximity to each other
• Use the search help to find proximity searches but
in general it is designated by the “/”
• Eg. within same sentence: substance /s abuse
• Eg. within same paragraph: substance /p abuse
Wildcards
• If you are looking for a word that has a plural in the
word, you can use a wildcard
• Usually designated by “?”
• Eg. searching for articles on woman and women in
general
• You would use wom?n instead and it would bring results
back with both woman and women in it.
Using search engines
Using search engines (or Google)
effectively
• Keep in mind that Google is a good starting point, but that it
isn’t able to access most of our resources!
• For example – none of the EBSCOHost journals are available via
Google
• Every database has a search engine like Google – but they
are not always as intuitive as Google
• Keep in mind that Google saves searches and uses specific
algorithms to adapt to your previous searches – this gives the
efficient impression
• When using any search engine – be more specific and keep
in mind how to evaluate information
• The more specific you are, the more relevant results it will give

  • 22. Plagiarism You commit plagiarism in written work when you use another person’s sentences, ideas or opinions without acknowledging them as being from that other person. This can take multiple forms: OBVIOUS FORMS: Buying / borrowing a paper and copying it Hiring somebody to write for you Cutting and pasting text Direct translations Citing sources you didn’t use LESS OBVIOUS FORMS: Not giving proper credit Not referencing images, etc Improper paraphrasing Failing to give a proper reference Not acknowledging outsourcing (eg. Data)
  • 23. So what should you reference Reference anything that is not your own idea. What about policies, bills, etc? • Both statements of FACTS and statements of LAW need to be referenced: Statement of Fact Statement of Law NATO has been deployed into the Sudan a number of times to assist with the refugee crisis. Countries are prohibited from using force to threaten the political or territorial integrity of another country.
  • 25. UCT Author-Date Referencing In-text Reference list Bourke (2007: 135) discusses that public libraries tend to be the central hub of activity in a community. Bourke, C. 2007. Public libraries: partnerships, funding and relevance. • 26. Citing • Learn how to cite • Choose your referencing style • Follow the guidelines set out • Consult your lecturer, your subject librarian and the Writing Centre • Practice makes perfect! • Why should you cite? • Adding authority to your work • Demonstrates your knowledge of the topic • Demonstrates your reading depth and breadth • Protects you against committing plagiarism
  • 27.
  • 28. Remember • Start your essays/assignments/projects as soon as possible • Don’t rush • Keeping track • Cite liberally
  • 29. Referencing: The what, why, when, where, how and the which
  • 30. What •Referencing is acknowledging the source of information or ideas you have used in your writing. •When you don’t reference your work, you commit plagiarism. •The use of other people's ideas and writing without acknowledgement •Plagiarism involves taking another person's ideas, words or inventions and presenting them as your own •Rewording another person's work, without acknowledging its source, is also plagiarism. Why •To distinguish your own ideas from that of the author’s; •To cite different points of view; •To validate what you are writing; •To inform readers of the scope and depth of your reading; •To emphasize a position that you agree or disagree with; •To refer to other research that leads up to your study; •To highlight a pertinent point by quoting the original; •To enable readers to consult the original source; •To avoid plagiarism When •When you are using or referring to somebody else's words or ideas; •When you use information gained through interviewing another person; •When you copy the exact words; •When you reprint any diagrams, illustrations, charts, and pictures; •When you use ideas that others have given you in conversations or over email. •No need to reference •When you are writing about your own experiences; your own observations; results of an experiment ; your own insights; your own thoughts; your own conclusions about a subject; •When you are using "common knowledge" - folklore, common sense observations, shared information within your field of study or cultural group.
  • 31. Where • In-text referencing: • The format of the in- text reference depends on the referencing style used. • The reference list, a list of works cited or a bibliography: • A complete reference must also appear in a reference list at the end of your work. How • Make sure that you gather all of the information required to construct the reference at the time you gather the information or ideas. • Make sure that you keep the reference details with the information from that source throughout your research. • Make sure that you know which referencing style your department or lecturer requires you to use. • Make sure that you know how to correctly apply the referencing style required. • Allow plenty of time to integrate the references into your work. When • Which referencing style is the right one? • Consult your academic department on their preferred referencing style. • Referencing styles used at the University of Cape Town • Please visit: • http://www.lib.uct.ac.za /lib/referencing-help
  • 33. Referencing Guide • There is a detailed referencing guide on the UCT Author-Date style available on the library website • The UCT Author-Date style is an in-text style of referencing, with a full bibliography at the end • It is similar to the Harvard style and other Author- Date styles

  • 53. Identifying Keywords • Broader v narrow terms • Synonyms • Drug abuse vs narcotic abuse vs substance abuse • British v US terminology and spelling • Labor v Labour Planning Social Development Planning Community Development
  • 54. Constructing Search Strategy • Search Language • Natural Language • Terms and Connectors (Boolean Operators) • Constructing search phrases • Keywords • Terms and Connectors • Boolean Operators • Phrases • Brackets • Truncation / Stemming • Proximity searches
  • 55. Using Boolean Operators • Boolean Operators are used to connect and define the relationship between your search terms. • When searching electronic databases, you can use the Boolean operators to either narrow or broaden your record sets. • The three Boolean operators are AND, OR and NOT.
  • 56. The Boolean Operator “AND” (narrows search) = Hit Using the Boolean Operator ‘AND’ for the topic “Abuse of cocaine” Cocaine Abuse
  • 57. The Boolean Operator ‘OR’ (synonyms, alternatives, broadens search) = Hit Strategies success Using the Boolean Operator ‘OR’ for the topic “Strategies for success”
  • 58. The Boolean Operator ‘NOT’ (exclude certain words from your search) = Hit Community organisations collaboration Using the Boolean Operator ‘NOT’ to exclude collaboration from the topic “Community organisations”
  • 59. Phrases • More than one word contained in “ ” to search for a specific phrase • “substance abuse” • Certain databases use ( ) to signify phrases instead
  • 60. Brackets • Useful to combine search phrases into one using brackets • Using the topic “Successful strategies for community organisations” the searches can be • Strategies AND “community organisations” • Success AND “community organisations” • Using brackets: • (strategies OR success) AND “community organisations”
  • 61. Brackets • Brackets avoid ambiguity: • Strategies OR success AND “community organisations” • It will not include arrest in the search = Hit success Community organisations strategies
  • 62. Truncation / Stemming • Truncation involves the shortening of the word (*) to allow the inclusion of plurals and similar phrases • Eg. dev* for development BUT • dev* - development, developmental, developments, etc BUT ALSO devotion, devilish, develops, devested Best truncation would be development*
  • 63. Proximity Searches • Good to use for phrases: “substance abuse” • Abuse of a substance • Substance that is there for abuse • Using a proximity search you can search for your keywords in proximity to each other • Use the search help to find proximity searches but in general it is designated by the “/” • Eg. within same sentence: substance /s abuse • Eg. within same paragraph: substance /p abuse
  • 64. Wildcards • If you are looking for a word that has a plural in the word, you can use a wildcard • Usually designated by “?” • Eg. searching for articles on woman and women in general • You would use wom?n instead and it would bring results back with both woman and women in it.
  • 66.
  • 67. Using search engines (or Google) effectively • Keep in mind that Google is a good starting point, but that it isn’t able to access most of our resources! • For example – none of the EBSCOHost journals are available via Google • Every database has a search engine like Google – but they are not always as intuitive as Google • Keep in mind that Google saves searches and uses specific algorithms to adapt to your previous searches – this gives the efficient impression • When using any search engine – be more specific and keep in mind how to evaluate information • The more specific you are, the more relevant results it will give
