- 3. Your library website Each menu deals with relevant information – looking for something? Use the “find” option, curious about how long you get your books for? “using the library” can answer that! - 4. Getting off campus access to resources – Library links 4 Because the library purchases a lot of the material, you will need to "prove" to the database you are a student. Most databases might ask you for a password. Do not put in your own credentials unless there's a specific instruction. The library automatically "fills" in the password through IP authentication. If your IP address reads that you are on an internet connection that is linked to Stellenbosch University, then the database will give you access. This means that when you are off-campus, you need to use a proxy to tell the database you are from Stellenbosch. This proxy is automatically contained in all the links on the library's page and your library how-to guide's page. So the simplest way to get access, is to simply use the library website and your library how-to guide.

- 6. COVID-19 and the Library Limited amount of students – so bookings are essential to visit the library. Currently we are limited to 750 people inside the building at a time. To get a book, you don’t need to visit the library – you can simply request a book pick up by emailing the name of the book, the shelf number and your student number to jsg_uitl@sun.ac.za. The AgriSciences and Science books are now available again as the first part of the renovation project is complete! Although you can’t drop in at my desk anymore, you can book an appointment with me online at any time by clicking on the “online appointment” box on my library guide. 6

Library Spaces If you don’t know the library or it’s been so long you can’t remember it – make an appointment with me to give you a quick tour and show you our newly renovated spaces and the Research Commons (our exclusive postgrad study space). I’ll also show you our new Makerspace, which is aimed at creating and designing things, and has robotics stations and 3D printers available. 7

- Hi everybody! I am Elizabeth, and I am the faculty librarian for AgriSciences. Today we’ll go through a quick library orientation so you can see how the library can help you through your postgraduate journey.
- Let’s start with what I can help you with throughout the year. Throughout your postgraduate studies you will be expected to keep up to date with reading the literature in your field, but to do that you need to become an expert in finding that literature. I can help you structure your searches to make sure you don’t waste time looking for literature, and set up search alerts on our databases that will keep you up to date with any new literature published in your topic area. In particular with your literature review, I can help you with the structuring and managing of your literature to make the writing process a lot easier. There will be times when you struggle to get access to the full text of articles – the library offers a free interlibrary loan service, where we will get the article for you from another institution that has it – all you need to do is fill in the online form. Also be aware that throughout the year, the library offers general workshops on things like using Mendeley for referencing, understanding the publishing process and choosing journals to publish in, and working with research data, in particular research data management.
- I want to now take you through a few basics of your library – starting with the library website website. I’ve highlighted the most important areas for you to look at – in particular, the library search engine for you to find books and articles, the Ask a Librarian service, which is a forum or a live chat you can post any question to, the Library Guides tab, which contains a wealth of how-to help and our quick links.
- Please also take note that all our electronic resources are available off-campus, but in order to gain access to articles, you will need to go through the library’s proxy to indicate you are from Stellenbosch, so you will need to use the library’s website or your library guide as a starting point and log in with your student number and password on the Stellenbosch log in.
- Three easy ways to get access to articles are through setting up your google scholar with the library proxy, using our e-journal portal and using your library guide.
- I’d also just like to speak to the impact that COVID-19 has had on the library services – the library is currently open for a limited amount of students, as per regulations. This amount might change, so keep an eye on the library’s website for any announcements. The good news is if you just need a book or a specific article scanned in, then you can just email the library’s circulation desk at jsg_uitl@sun.ac.za and they will get the book ready for you to pickup or scan in the article and email it to you. Although last year some of our books were unavailable due to the renovation project, I am happy to let you know that they are now available again. Unfortunately, I am not available for drop in appointments any more, but you can easily schedule an online appointment with me via your library guide or send me an email.
- If you haven’t got to know the library space itself and would like a quick tour, also feel welcome to make an appointment with me and I can show you which section on the shelves you’ll find your books, the different study spaces available (including the Research Commons which is exclusive to postgraduate students) and our Makerspace where you can create and 3D print, amongst other places in the library
- Two useful tools that are often overlooked are our virtual browse option, which lets you browse the shelves virtually. If you have a book in mind, you only need to search for the title, for example the welfare of the laying hen, and then open the details of the book in the results and scroll down, You will then see the virtual browse option which lets you browse the other books next to it on the shelf.
- The second tool is a database called Pressreader, which is available to all Stellenbosch staff and students, and can be downloaded as an app on your phone or tablet for offline reading as well. PressReader lets you keep up to date with news and magazines and even includes some trade magazines like Landbouweekblad.
- Let’s take a closer look at your library guide now. Simply click on “library guides” on the library homepage and go to your department, for example “animal science”. Here you will find a wealth of information on using library resources, including direct links to relevant databases. You will also find information to support your academic journey, such as writing help, research data, plagiarism and referencing and a specific postgraduate guide, amongst others. My contact details are conveniently located on the front page, which also includes links to my social media channels. Any announcements about library services, you will also find here, as well as current research updates. In particular, you will find helpful how-to videos on my youtube channels.
