A survey was conducted of 31 participants to gather information about preferences for thriller movie openings. The survey collected data on participant age, gender, how often they watch movies and thriller movies specifically, their favorite thriller subgenres, preferred settings for thrillers, and open responses about the effectiveness of music and trailers for thrillers. The majority of participants watched movies often, were knowledgeable about the thriller genre from watching frequently, and psychological was the most commonly preferred subgenre. Cities were a popular preferred setting as participants felt thrillers in normal settings would be more ominous. Responses also indicated that music adds suspense and sets the tone for thrillers, and trailers are effective for providing previews and understanding of what a movie is about.
