This document summarizes the results of a survey about preferences for thriller movies. It discusses 10 questions that were asked in the survey to gather information about gender differences, preferred thriller subgenres, important elements like protagonists, music and settings. Key findings include that action, supernatural and psychological thrillers were most popular, females prefer a female protagonist, and music is considered very important for building atmosphere and suspense. The survey results will help inform the creation of the author's own thriller film.
This is a powerpoint to show the results from survey. I asked 21 people to fill out a questionnaire consisting of a series of 10 questions about films and film trailers. I then collected the data, put it into various different graphs and charts, and then analysed the information. This gave me more knowledge into my target audience's opinions about film trailers, and what genre film I should consider making.

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.
Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
2. Q1 What is your gender?
Overall 54 people answered my
survey. All of which where in
the age range of 16-17 year
olds. 61.11% of people were
female and 33.89% of people
were males. This results may
not be generalizable as they
are from a specific age range
and more females than males
answered this questionnaire.
This question was asked in my
survey to identify answers/
results with a gender. For
example I am now aware that
more females than males
prefer action thrillers. Asking
people for their gender also
allows me to be aware of what
to do to my movie in order for
it to appeal to them.
3. Q2 What thriller sub-genre do you
prefer the most?
The question, ‘What thriller sub-genre do you prefer
the most?’ was asked in my survey in order to be
aware of which genre is most popular. This question
will also apply to which genre I will make my thriller
film. I can also generalize my results and work out an
average as to which thriller sub-genre males and
females prefer the most. After analyzing my results I
have found that action, supernatural and
psychological thrillers are the most popular. The least
popular thriller sub-genre for this particular age
group is captivity thrillers.
4. Q3 What do you like about that
sub-genre?The question ‘what do you like about that
sub-genre’ was asked in order to get more
information as to why people prefer a
certain sub-genre and what makes it
intriguing. The most popular response was
‘suspense’. This may be because people
enjoy to be surprised and on ‘the edge of
their seats’ feeling when watching a thriller
movie. The least popular answer was ‘ Hero
vs. villain. This could be because most
movies has a hero vs. villain and they are
seen as cliché. This question can also be
applied to my thriller movie as it makes me
aware of what I sound and shouldn't’t
include.
5. Q4 What gender do you prefer the
protagonist to be? And why?
This question has been asked in order for it to be applied to my movie. It is more
popular for a female to be the protagonist. There are also many different reasons as
to why. 44.4% of people voted male and 55.56% voted female as their prefer
protagonist in a typical thriller film. Many people
Also commented that they did
Not mind which gender. Others stated that a female protagonist breaks and
overcomes stereotypes.
6. Q5 Is background music in a thriller movie
important and why?
This question allows me to see if music in a thriller movie is important as well as
needed in my thriller film. From my results I have found out that music is vastly
important in and thriller genre. 90.74% of people voted yes when taking the
survey. Most people agreed that music is a quick way of creating an atmosphere
and it is a good way to build suspense as well as endure a person into the thriller
film.
8. Q7 What do you rate thriller
movies in general?
This question was different to
the others as it asks people to
rate something out of 5. This
question allows me to see
people personal preferences on
thriller movies in general
9. Q8 who do you prefer to watch a
thriller movie with?
10. Q9 Where do you prefer
thriller movie to be set?
The setting of a thriller film is
vastly important as it makes
the plot more effective.
11. Q10 what builds up suspense
in a thriller film?
Building up suspense in really
important in a thriller film. This
question allows me to understand
what is needed in order to
successfully create ‘edge of the seat’
suspense in my thriller film. As
shown in the bar graph there Is a
large variety in answer. The most
popular answer that people choose
(29.63%) was music. The least
important thing that is not really
important when building suspense is
lighting.
