Female

After conducting our questionnaire, when approaching the audience to take it, we found
that more females were willing to take the questionnaire knowing that it was about
horror films. This is what allowed us to come to the decision to focus our target
audience at women; we also felt that this would be easier as working with a female
audience was easier for us all to relate to.

When looking at the different age ranges we found that the majority of the audience
asked, were between the ages of 16 and 20, but we also found that 31 to 35 year olds were
quite predominant as well. We wanted to aim our film at quite a wide age range for all to be
enjoyed that is why we chose the age bracket of 16 to 35 year olds as this gave us a good
age range to work with, as well as being in this age range which again would make it easier
to find likes and dislikes.

We found that one of the audience asked watched films everyday and none of them said
never,, way over half of the audience asked said they watched films every week. We wanted
to find this out because we wanted to know if watching films were a big part of the
audiences lives otherwise this would not be very successful.

As our chosen genre was Horror we wanted to know how often Horror films were watched.
From the results we were given back it was shown that Horror films were watched most
every month, and only one person said that they never watched Horrors. We wanted to
know this, so we knew whether to distribute our promotional package at the beginning of
the month, half way through or the end dependant of how often they watch them.
Is Horror your favourite type of genre?

yes
Yes
no
No

This was very important as we needed to know whether or not horror was the most
important genre to our audience, nearly 75% of the audience asked said that Horror would
be their favourite genre and this was helpful as Horror was the genre we were using.
Which type of supernatural Horror interest you
the most?

Possession
Demons
Paranormal/Haunting
Found Footage

We wanted to use supernatural Horrors as our sub gene, but we didn’t know what we should
include, that is why we asked the audience what they would like most to see. Possession was
one of our first ideas and we were glad when it got the majority of the votes as it showed
that our original ideas could we good and useful.
Do you enjoy watching the trailer, as well as
viewing the film poster before watching the film?

Nearly all of the audience that were asked said that they preferred seeing things such as the
trailer and poster before the film, we wanted to know why these things were so effective
and the next question gave us some answers as to why.
If you have circled yes; then why have you
done so?
Below were some of the answers to the above question.
•
•
•
•

•
•

‘ I circled yes because I think that if you don’t get to see a trailer or poster before
going and watching the film then you don’t really know what your expected. I like to
know a little bit about what I am about to watch.’
‘ I think its exciting, it gives you a mini thrill before going and watching the film’
‘ I think that is an effective way of advertisement of the film, without it the audience
don’t know what they are going to watch and therefore us less enticed to go and
watch it.’
‘ I just think that they are a good way of drawing the audience in, as they only get to
have a small slice out of a big cake; meaning that they are not able to get the whole
thing. This then persuades them to go and watch the film because they want to find
out more about the narrative and find out if the characters escape etc..’
‘ They give you an insight into the film before even watching it.’
‘ The trailer always uses some of the key points from the narrative and this makes the
trailer sometimes even more effective than the film itself.’

We realised that the trailer was extremely important, we as a group realised that we had
to make our trailer as effective as possible as we wanted to ‘entice’ and ‘persuade’ the
target audience to come and watch our Horror film
In your opinion which features do you feel ; make
a Horror film enjoyable and effective for
you, and then explain why?
•

‘ The most enjoyable features for me within a Horror film are the main antagonists , as
they are the characters that create the fear and allow the audience to get the thrills.’
• ‘ Sound and music used in the film is definitely the most effective things used for me, as
the sounds build up the tension and the sudden stabs of sound make the audience jump.
These are the reasons people go to watch Horror films as they like the thrill they get from
them.’
• ‘ The way the filming and editing it done, if the transitions are poor then the film will be
very poor, the quick montages and editing make the films more effective and the scary
parts become a lot scarier.’
• ‘ I think that the way the person dies is the most effective or the characters who die as
these are the most terrifying parts, seeing how the victims die and which characters are
going to die, it allows the audience to feel sympathetic for them as they have gone on
this journey with the characters by watching them trying to defeat the antagonist.
From this feedback we were able to gain a lot of new ideas as well as expand on our own
ideas. We realised what made the audience jump and also what they thought made the
films so effective to watch and we wanted to bring these ideas into our own work.
Name your favourite Horror film, and explain why it
is your favourite?
•
•

•
•

•

‘ My favourite Horror would probably be Insidious, because I like the narrative and the
way they entwine the past into the future.’
‘ The Conjuring because I like how they used the real life ‘The Warrens’ story this
becomes a lot more effective and scary knowing that this film was based on real life
events.’
‘ Saw I think it is really effective, and gory it also helps that he is psychologically
deranged and his ways of killing people are really disgusting as well as inventive.’
‘ The Orphan she is supposed to be and innocent child that has been adopted but she is
not, we find out later in the narrative that she is the antagonist. I Felt that this was a
really clever and effective idea to use a child as no one would suspect a child; I also liked
the twist at the end when the audience finds our that she is actually a grown woman
pretending to be a child.’
‘ Mama I like the use of children in Horror, families then lose their self sense of security.’

Again using all of these ideas in our own promotional package we wanted to engage with
the audiences ideas and give the audience what they want and expect. A lot of possession
films came up which was good for us as we were able to use their ideas as well as our own
to make our work to an even better standard as well as creating professionalism.

Are you male or female? 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 Male Female After conducting our questionnaire, when approaching the audience to take it, we found that more females were willing to take the questionnaire knowing that it was about horror films. This is what allowed us to come to the decision to focus our target audience at women; we also felt that this would be easier as working with a female audience was easier for us all to relate to.
  • 3. Which age bracket do you fall into? 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 16-20 21-25 26-30 31-35 When looking at the different age ranges we found that the majority of the audience asked, were between the ages of 16 and 20, but we also found that 31 to 35 year olds were quite predominant as well. We wanted to aim our film at quite a wide age range for all to be enjoyed that is why we chose the age bracket of 16 to 35 year olds as this gave us a good age range to work with, as well as being in this age range which again would make it easier to find likes and dislikes.
  • 4. How often do you watch films? 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 Everyday Every week Every month never We found that one of the audience asked watched films everyday and none of them said never,, way over half of the audience asked said they watched films every week. We wanted to find this out because we wanted to know if watching films were a big part of the audiences lives otherwise this would not be very successful.
  • 5. How often do you watch Horror films? 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 Everyday Every week Every month never As our chosen genre was Horror we wanted to know how often Horror films were watched. From the results we were given back it was shown that Horror films were watched most every month, and only one person said that they never watched Horrors. We wanted to know this, so we knew whether to distribute our promotional package at the beginning of the month, half way through or the end dependant of how often they watch them.
  • 6. Is Horror your favourite type of genre? yes Yes no No This was very important as we needed to know whether or not horror was the most important genre to our audience, nearly 75% of the audience asked said that Horror would be their favourite genre and this was helpful as Horror was the genre we were using.
  • 7. Which type of supernatural Horror interest you the most? Possession Demons Paranormal/Haunting Found Footage We wanted to use supernatural Horrors as our sub gene, but we didn’t know what we should include, that is why we asked the audience what they would like most to see. Possession was one of our first ideas and we were glad when it got the majority of the votes as it showed that our original ideas could we good and useful.
  • 8. Do you enjoy watching the trailer, as well as viewing the film poster before watching the film? No Yes 0 5 10 15 20 Nearly all of the audience that were asked said that they preferred seeing things such as the trailer and poster before the film, we wanted to know why these things were so effective and the next question gave us some answers as to why.
  • 9. If you have circled yes; then why have you done so? Below were some of the answers to the above question. • • • • • • ‘ I circled yes because I think that if you don’t get to see a trailer or poster before going and watching the film then you don’t really know what your expected. I like to know a little bit about what I am about to watch.’ ‘ I think its exciting, it gives you a mini thrill before going and watching the film’ ‘ I think that is an effective way of advertisement of the film, without it the audience don’t know what they are going to watch and therefore us less enticed to go and watch it.’ ‘ I just think that they are a good way of drawing the audience in, as they only get to have a small slice out of a big cake; meaning that they are not able to get the whole thing. This then persuades them to go and watch the film because they want to find out more about the narrative and find out if the characters escape etc..’ ‘ They give you an insight into the film before even watching it.’ ‘ The trailer always uses some of the key points from the narrative and this makes the trailer sometimes even more effective than the film itself.’ We realised that the trailer was extremely important, we as a group realised that we had to make our trailer as effective as possible as we wanted to ‘entice’ and ‘persuade’ the target audience to come and watch our Horror film
  • 10. In your opinion which features do you feel ; make a Horror film enjoyable and effective for you, and then explain why? • ‘ The most enjoyable features for me within a Horror film are the main antagonists , as they are the characters that create the fear and allow the audience to get the thrills.’ • ‘ Sound and music used in the film is definitely the most effective things used for me, as the sounds build up the tension and the sudden stabs of sound make the audience jump. These are the reasons people go to watch Horror films as they like the thrill they get from them.’ • ‘ The way the filming and editing it done, if the transitions are poor then the film will be very poor, the quick montages and editing make the films more effective and the scary parts become a lot scarier.’ • ‘ I think that the way the person dies is the most effective or the characters who die as these are the most terrifying parts, seeing how the victims die and which characters are going to die, it allows the audience to feel sympathetic for them as they have gone on this journey with the characters by watching them trying to defeat the antagonist. From this feedback we were able to gain a lot of new ideas as well as expand on our own ideas. We realised what made the audience jump and also what they thought made the films so effective to watch and we wanted to bring these ideas into our own work.
  • 11. Name your favourite Horror film, and explain why it is your favourite? • • • • • ‘ My favourite Horror would probably be Insidious, because I like the narrative and the way they entwine the past into the future.’ ‘ The Conjuring because I like how they used the real life ‘The Warrens’ story this becomes a lot more effective and scary knowing that this film was based on real life events.’ ‘ Saw I think it is really effective, and gory it also helps that he is psychologically deranged and his ways of killing people are really disgusting as well as inventive.’ ‘ The Orphan she is supposed to be and innocent child that has been adopted but she is not, we find out later in the narrative that she is the antagonist. I Felt that this was a really clever and effective idea to use a child as no one would suspect a child; I also liked the twist at the end when the audience finds our that she is actually a grown woman pretending to be a child.’ ‘ Mama I like the use of children in Horror, families then lose their self sense of security.’ Again using all of these ideas in our own promotional package we wanted to engage with the audiences ideas and give the audience what they want and expect. A lot of possession films came up which was good for us as we were able to use their ideas as well as our own to make our work to an even better standard as well as creating professionalism.
