Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) systems use GPS technology and wireless communications to track the real-time location of vehicles. An AVL system consists of GPS receivers in each vehicle that determine location and transmit it via radio signals to a central base station. The base station uses computer software to monitor vehicle locations on digital maps in real-time.
