Audience researchSummary
By creatinga questionnaire andafocusgroup interviewwiththe participantsbeingwithinthe target
audience age(15-18) itshowsme whattheylike andwhat theyexpectsowhenImake my ownI can
include thissoitappealstothemand makestheminterestedsomymagazine will be successful.
Theyenjoyhavingthe mastheadsasthe biggestandboldestpartandhavingcoverlinestodraw
themin.
The audience saidthatwiththe genre of Pop theythinkitisgood as ithas a varietyof musicandis
not all the same, ithas a wide targetaudience andsince there isalotof styleswithinPopitis
widespreadandsothisattracts themhoweveritcanbe repetitive.
In myquestionnaireitwasansweredbybothmalesandfemaleswhichallowsme tohave insight
intoboththeirexpectationsandsee whattheyeachprefersowhenImake a magazine Ican
conclude theirideastoattract bothgenders,howeverconventionallyitismainlyfemale-leaningand
so itwill be more appealingtofemaleshowever, like billboards, the contentpage will be forboth
gendersandmore than one genre soI can have a widertargetaudience. One thingIlearntfromthe
Target Audience isthattheypreferthe fonttobe inSans serif, throughoutthe magazine thiswill be
my mainfont.Withinthe focusgrouptheysaidhow theypreferthe fontto be neat andordered
howeveritshouldalsobe boldso itattracts themstraightaway. Theydo notlike Topof the Pops
style asit lookschildishasif a childthemselveshaswrote it,thisappealstothe youngeraudiences
but mytarget audience ismore mature sothisissomethingIneedtoconsider, itwill helpwhenit
comesto makingmine asI knowtheydo notlike tomuch Sans serif andwouldlike more writingon
the pages.
Leadingonfrom font, the imagesare the firstor secondmostimportantparts accordingto my focus
group. My Surveyresultstell me myprimaryaudiencewanttosee bothbandsand artistsinmy
magazine, the image isveryimportantasif theydo notenjoythe artistthentheylose interestinthe
magazine straightaway,The artistneedstobe relatable andanA-listcelebrity. The image, since itis
female-leaningtheywouldlike the frontcovertobe of a female artist. The anglesshouldbe close-
upsso you can see theirface expressionandsince theyare attractive, the girlslookandtryto
recreate the look, theyalsowouldlike tosee wide shotforbandsasthat waytheycan see all the
members,the surroundingsanditiseasiertoportray theirpersonalitiesthroughwide shots, another
thingtheylikedaboutwide shotswasyoucan see theirstyle andfashionsense,thisalsomakesit
relatable astheyenjoylookinggood.Overallwiththe shottype theywouldlike me tovaryit soit
makesitmore interestingandyoucan see differentelementstothe artists. BothmyFocus group
interview andmyquestionnaire bothagree thattheypreferBillboardslayoutandimage stylesand
so thisissomethingIneedto include.
My questionnaire showstheypreferthe coloursonthe frontcoverto be eitherpink, purple, redor
blue. The magazine will appeal tothe targetaudience if Iuse brightboldcolours, the focusgroup
suggestedforthe colourstobe inyour face so youcan tell itapart from the othermagazines. It
shouldhave a colourscheme thatismodernand subtle withnatural coloursinsectionssoitisnot
overpowering, theylike ittobe neutral soit forboth gendersandcoloursthatrepresentthe artists
ina positive way.Byusingathemes, especiallywiththe coloursitcreates ahouse style whichis
somethingthatappealstomyTarget audience.Justlike withthe imagesBillboardappealsmore to
my audience, theylikedthe blackandwhite double page spreadasitresemblesthe artistsandher
life andlinksinwiththe font, howevertheylike the brightcoloursintopof the pops, Itappealsmore
to the target audience of Topof the Popsas itintriguesthe readerwhereasif itwassubtle itwould
not.Overall theypreferthe Billboardcoloursasitismore maturesandintrigues themastheyfind
top of the pops style tobe childishdue tothe coloursused, thiswill helpme asIknow not
to use brightcoloursor coloursthat may clash. It alsoenablesme tosee whatcolourstheylike and
whythisis whichenablesme touse these coloursinmyadvantage.
Whenit comesto the double page there isamixture inresponse, the majorityfrommy
questionnaire wouldliketosee alongarticle and myfocus groupare halvedonwhetheritshouldbe
longshort, but overall the longarticle formathasmore votes, the audience wouldlike tosee itinan
interview format(66.67%of people) soIshall use a longinterview withafew secretswithinitsoit
appealstomy targetaudience.Shortarticleswhere said because itiseasiertoreadand skimread
throughas theydon’tlike readingalotand so they lose interest, theyprefermixture whenitcomes
to language butmainlyinformal sorelatableanddoesnotseemstagedbutdolike some type of
intelligentwords.Theywouldpreferthe article tobe onfemalesaspopisfemale-leaninganditis
relatable tothemsothiswill helpme asI know whattheyexpect.Simple language inaformal mode
of addressattractsthe audience however, onthe double page spreadslightlyhardertoreadbutstill
relatable andnotto complicate withelementsof amode of addressthat isinformal. The artiston
the double page spreadshouldbe relatableandfamiliarandfeature onherlife andherviewsin
detail.
The focus groupsaidthat the contentpage should feature what’sinsideandhave numberssoitis
navigable.Theydislike the magazineif itisunorganised, clutteredandhardto get aroundso whenI
make mine, toappeal to myaudience Iwill notmake itclutteredandmake ithave numbersand
clearto see so itis navigable andorganised.Itwillfeature artist’seventsandproductswithafew
adverts.The focusgroup saidI should‘Advertise togetmoney’sothisiswhatappealstothem
therefore Iwill advertise thingsthatteenagersenjoythisissothe audience will buythembutIwill
use thingsthat the targetaudience mightnotthinkof buyingbutonce seeingthe adverttheywill,
howevertheydisliketoomanyadvertisementssoIwill onlyhave one page worth. Quizzeswillnot
be usedbut maybe one competitionorpuzzle atthe backappealstothe audience,Ilearntthatthe
audience are quite mature butstill enjoyapuzzle ortwoat the endfor whentheygetbored, butit
will be relatable.
Overall,bothmyquestionnaire andfocusgroupinterview,agree thatBillboardslayoutisthe most
appealing,however50%preferTop of the Pops contentspage butfor the frontcoverand double
page spreadtheybothpreferthe Billboardmagazine, therefore Ishall use theirmagazineasan
influenceasI knowtheypreferthisandsoit will appeal tomyaudience.
