3. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
My magazine is a UK hip hop, rap and grime magazine, which challenges the conventions of other
magazines of this genre. By music magazine magazine is very similar to magazines like kerrang, NME ,
RWD etc. My main body text and also my masthead are the same font style, which very different to other
magazines who would have made them differentiate from each other. I really wanted my masthead to
grab the teachers attention so I made the back round a baby blue which against contrasted the color of
the font which was white with a black outline. The colors I used to make this masthead were very bright
and vibrant and welcoming and different as magazine usually use strong bold colors like red or a dark
blue. The name of my magazine is “Fresh Beatz Magazine” which is a mixture of a traditional movie and a
non-traditional movie as the language used is half traditional (Fresh) and half slang(Beatz) which also
relates with my target audience as they can connected with the magazine more as this is the language
they use. My main image I wanted it follow the type of magazine genre my magazine is, but at the same
time keep it attractive and unique, like my masthead. The artist in my magazine is slick valentino and I
have used the main image on the front cover also in my double page spread. The picture is of him in the
middle of him rapping which most magazine don’t have, they usually have a close up or mid-range picture
made the background white as it would be easier to movie and manipulate things around the main image. I
choose to have my magazine at the top of the magazine again in the same font as the masthead but with
out the baby blue background which still keeps the masthead in control and the main attraction. The left
third is usually left for advertisements because that’s what where the human eye usually looks first but in
my magazine I have left advertisements out replaced this part with interesting cover lines.
4. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My magazine is mainly aimed at both female and male teenagers aged 16-19, who keep up with
the UK music industry. For this reason I choose young artist who fitted into this genre and would
appeal to the teenagers of today but also show them in a good light. I wanted to show teenagers
as good light and I believe the artist I choose does exactly that, in the interview he gave mature
answers and sounded like he had determination and purpose/goal. This fights the stereotype of
the young people of today, and shows that they are not all the same, and that they can be mature
and make smart decision. I also wanted to show that not all young rappers talk about the “hood”
and some talk about the future.
5. What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product
and why?
I would choose Rewind Creative Media LTD, simply because they are based in the UK and promote the
things that happening in the UK unlike other magazine who promote the American music industry. Rewind
magazine have also made a magazine which is similar to my magazine (RWD) and they try to reach the
same target audience as me, and also as their magazine proved to be a success in the target audience
which my magazine would probably follow. They also promote young upcoming artist in the UK which is
another thing that my magazine would do.
6. Who would be the audience for your media product?
I believe that my music magazine “Fresh Beatz” which portrays a niche market in UK. This would
be aimed at teenagers 16-19 in the UK, these are the older teenagers turning into young mature
adults. At this stage they are usually trying to become independent individuals and build their
confidents, and I wanted to portray these teenagers in a way in which breaks and shatters the
classic stereotype, with associated this magazine to the drugs, violence crime or swearing that
the media think of when you think of teenagers aged 16-19 . I believe and want my magazine to
aspire young artist to follow their dreams and help others to get motivated by reading about other
young people/ artists/ success stories and leading them on to become hard working and the best
they can be.
My target audience would be teenagers who usually spend money on music magazines, and I
researched how much they would spend on music magazine usually. I researched and found out
that teenagers at this age usually like and listen to the same artist and would spend around the
same amount of money on a music magazine
8. How did you attract your audience?
I attracted my audience my completing market research on my intended audience. My magazine was
intended for genders (male & female) and the age group was 16-24. I drew the by including the artist they
like in the skyline. I also found out what other magazine they like and I researched them and found out they
look at them magazines and found out what they like about them and what ideas I could tale and use for my
own magazine. I also found out how much they would spend on a magazine so that they would also be
attract at how affordable my magazine was compared to the rest. I also used the props and costumes to
attract my audience, because people are attracted by what the main image looks like and who is on it, this
is because teenagers are into what is trending for example body warmers. Hoodies etc. Also there is a
reference to twitter which is very popular amongst teenagers and students which is the reason that I
highlighted this quotation from the interview.
9. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
Whilst taking part in this course I picked up new tricks in which I will be able to use in future in media
or anything else, I learnt how to use different technologies which I used in order photos, layouts and
more. I used Photoshop to create my magazine, using prior knowledge of use of this software which
helped in producing my coursework, at the same time further advancing my knowledge of Photoshop.
I also used a website called survey monkey to help me create my questionnaire and wordpress to
upload and keep track of my coursework.
10. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have
learnt?
Learning these new skills such as how to manipulate and bend a image to my will using
Photoshop. Also I learnt how to download new fonts from the internet to my computer so that it
would appeal to my target audience but in my preliminary task I used very simplistic texts. I also
did learnt how to edit my pictures, and used more appealing color schemes to attract my target
audience. I also did quite a lot of research and planning to help me produce my magazine as in my
preliminary the research was not as detailed
