Evaluation Question 4- Who
would be the audience for
your media product?
By Tim McMorrow
My Target Audience
 The target audience for my music magazine is young adult males from
the ages 16-25 who also have an interest in rock music. The reason I
chose this for my target audience is because I fall into the category of
a young adult and I thought it would be easier to do a magazine based
on the music I enjoy. Another reason why I chose the rock genre as my
magazine genre is because it is a popular genre amongst young adults
because it is a mature genre and there are lots of huge and well known
artists which are affiliated with the genre.
 My magazine will be targeting the mass audience which is white males
as they are the type of people who listen to rock the most.
 My target audience are considered semi- skilled or unskilled due to
them not being in full-time employment and so are considered semi-
skilled. My target audience being semi-skilled also falls under their age
group, as my target audience is young, they are seen as immature and
rebellious in societies eyes and so the rock genre fits perfectly with
societies view of them.
The Research
The research is conducted included an interview and seeing what
type of genre of magazine they would read and if also what they
would like to see in a magazine. Furthermore I asked them what
brands and artists do they listen to the most and how much they
listen to music as a whole. After research I have obtained online,
30 college students took a survey which asked the questions
above. Around 60% of the students said that they listen to rock
music and was the highest percentage compared to other genres
such as pop. This survey helped me as it gave me an idea of what
people would like to read about and see in my magazine. Moreover,
the information gathered from the survey helped me decide which
rock artists will be featured in my magazine in order to grab my
target audience’s attention.
Influences
Many young adults are easily influenced by the music which they listen to
the most. Music is a big part of the way which many people get through
their day to day activities as it can allow them to escape and they can
relate their lives to the songs which they listen to. Music can also help
them express their emotion’s and let them speak their mind.
For creating my rock magazine, a huge influence was the old classic rock
music magazines like Rolling Stones as the selling lines were very clean
and the masthead was bold and in capitals which help the audience
really embrace the rock genre.
My Target Audience
 Since my target audience is for young adults, who love to be
surrounded by loud and catchy music. Rock music helps many people
release their stress and anger out. Many people who listen to rock
take pride in being different from everyone else and hate to be put in
categories, this is similar to what the rock genre is which is a
rebellious and rule breaking movement. Listening to rock music helps
them show that they like to be free and not part of the masses. It
helps them show their individuality.
Social group
 The costume of the model portrays a certain social group as in the contents
page and cover page he is wearing a suit without the blazer and although my
model is dressed smart, he still manages to keep a sort of rebellious look
which is a main theme in rock magazines and works really well in my
magazine. I have also represented my social group using mise en scene.
 This social groups do not care about their appearance and how everyone sees
them therefore I wanted to have a model/artist that can connect with the
audience so that it is clear who the magazine is aimed at. His clothes are very
formal which could be like he is being forced into a certain situation which he
doesn’t agree with and so the untidy and rebellious look works well in relating
with the audience as they may feel trapped and are forced into situations
which they may not like
Psychographics
 There are 5 different people in the world; Mainstreamers, Aspirers ,
Succeeders, Individualists, Carers .
 In the case of my target audience, they are individualists as they want to
show the world that they are different from everyone else and also want to
let society know they don’t follow the herd in terms of what they do and how
they do it. As my target audience is young this is even more apparent as they
want to show their independence to the world as they feel that they have to
prove themselves to everyone.
My target Audience.
 The location for my target audience would be within the London boroughs as
there is a high number of young adults who work part-time in this area who
are very easily influenced by the music they listen to. My target audience’s
interests would include, playing sports, using the internet and chilling out
with their mates.
 When it comes to education, it varies with the age eg. An 18 year old would
be in their last year of six form where as a 22 year old could be in university.
There is also the possibility that my target audience may already be in work
therefore are finished with their education.
