Thomas Everard created a media product called "Smooth Classic" magazine for his AS Level Media Studies course. He used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to construct the magazine, learning skills like using text boxes, shapes, and the paint tool. The magazine targets an older, wealthier audience interested in classical music. Thomas interviewed people to get feedback on the magazine's design and found it was successful at attracting its intended audience. While his preliminary task helped him learn Photoshop basics, Thomas felt the full product showed more progression in skills like image editing, layout, and meeting deadlines.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

2. In what ways does your Media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
There are examples of some âdifferenceâ, however, in terms of
the forms and conventions in my own media product I have
appealed to the same audience you can see this buy the title
that I have used is similar in the words that I have used and
the stile I have tried to copy. I have tired to used the same
format that they have used such as the white background and
with a gold main headline, âMcCartneyâ, âThe worlds best
duetâ. I have done this because it helps capture the readers
eye because the contours.
Also, I have just used the basic conventions such as barcode,
main image. master head, images for cover lines, sub-
headline and main- headline.
My âSmooth Classicâ magazine is affiliated with âClassic FMâ
so then it already has an audience. Therefore that audience,
in theory, will become my audience too.
The masthead that I have use I quite similar in the wording as
the original âclassic FMâ where I have used the word classic in
my master head âsmooth classicâ. So I have used for my sub-
headlines image a black boarder around as they have used a
white to symbolised and really show of the images that they
have used. Alot the colour scheme of white and red black and
gold has been repeated on to my magazine to make it even
3. How does your media
product represent particular
social groups?
The denotation of representation is that my magazine is aimed at a higher
age group then other magazines. The old more wealthier generation
would buy this magazine because stereotypically they would like this
genre of music. Although, they could also not want to have this magazine
because they donât fit into the stereotype, same with a younger audience,
they might like classical music and not fit their stereotype. Overall, itâs a
very particular magazine, and would only appeal to those who like
classical music because that is the heart and sole of the magazine.
In my opinion, my magazine doesn't portray the younger generation it
concentrates on the older and smarter dressed social groups that have
lived there life and are now enjoying their success and living a good life
and enjoying classical music. In the media we see that younger
generation is associated with hip hop and rap, whereas, on the other
hand we see the older generation to have a quieter, relaxed life.
4. What kind of media institution (Publisher) might distribute your
media product and why?
The Classic FM Magazine was a magazine that
was published in the UK every month ,it was a
radio before it was magazine. The magazine has a
wide appeal to people who are interested in the
classical music genre. The magazine was
launched in 1995, the magazine was published by
John Brown Publishing. In July 2000 it was
announced that the radio station had cancelled the
contract with John Brown Publishing and signed a
new agreement with Haymarket Publishing, to
which company the magazine transferred in
November 2000.
5. Who would be the audience for your media product and
why?
Hartleyâs seven subjectivities
1) Age: The age group that we are aim at are the older members of society such as 40 and over.
2) Gender: There is no specific gender that this magazine is aimed at.
3) Class: You wouldn't fined many lower class people reading this magazine and the type of people that you fined who would purchase this
magazine.
4) Ethnicity: I would have a English upper class and they would have English heritage throughout a very specific way of life and culture
5) Self-image: The self-image of the audience of the magazine would be that they would look after them self and they would be well presented
6) Nation: The nation of people that this would be aimed at is all English speaking country's but hopefully in the future we will want to expand to
other counts in Europe and then the hole world.
7) Family
Katzâ Uses & Gratifications theory
what the editors letter enables the readers to build a personal relationship creating a personal Identification and ownership over the content of the
magazine
The magazine enablespeople to be able to relate to the musicians because the whole classical scene doesn't have the âstar appealâ(dyer)as with
other types of music, so the people in this magazine live a life that people can relate to then if they where to read a pop magazine.
Inform and Educate
My magazine is grate for educating people because it talks about people lives and how they have achieved what they have achieved and what they
had to go though, it also talks about historic events thatâs have happened and about buildings to which have history in.
Maslowâs Hierarchy of needs
Social Climbers
The social class of my magazine is that most of the upper middle and upper class mostly read it, so the people who are social climbers would read this magazine
because it tells you of very upper class social events, that a lot of smart people would go to. This magazine is serotyped as the type of music that upper
class people, so people who want to be like them would start by listening to classical music which is what this magazine wrights about.
Caregivers
The problem with classical music is that it is rather hard to make a living from. There are a lot of musicians that donât make it so for the musician that are displaced
and interviewed in this magazine have had to work incredibly hard to get to the place they are. Also there are so many musicians that have had to deal with
huge hardships so a lot of readers sympathies with the musicians but also there is a huge amount of respect to them for what they have done and what they
have archived.
This months issue of Smooth classic shows
you what happening behind the scenes of
Catherine Botts plans with carrying on the
yearly long celebration of the 175th anniversary
of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, among
much more go on our links to find out about
more events
6. How did you attract/address
your audience?
In order to attract the intended target audience of âSmooth classicâ I decided to really exploit the culture that this magazine
has and the people who want to social clime, but there is an audience for classical music that are mostly. But there is
a huge amount of history behind classical music it dates back to the 11th century so its been around for a very long
time. Classical music is used in so many different ways from theatre productions to movies and people sing it on
talent shows among many more so there is a huge audience for classical music any way.
The inclusion of codes & conventions such as the main image, help my audience ârelateâ to their lifestyle and fashion
because they are dresses appropraily in a way that people will be able to identify themselves with them.
During the feed back process I bleave that I atchived my primary aims I intevewd numus people and recived posivtive
coments about the look and what would attrack people to the magazine
I was talking about different things with the people such as âwhat age of people do you think would draw you to this
magazineâ, âwhat draws you to this magazineâ and âwhat sort of class do you think would read this magazineâ
1st interview Daisy Linginton she said that âthe people on the front are older ⌠picture of some one getting marriedâ
1st interview Daisy Linginton she said that âit like for older people in there 20âŚâŚthe couple on the front look older then
kidsâ
2nd interview George Kelsey he said that âthe worlds best to me I want to pic it up and find out what is the worlds bestâ
2nd interview George Kelsey he said that âthe title really stands out on that weight back groundâ
2nd interview George Kelsey he said that âwell written and well organized magazineâ
2nd interview George Kelsey he said that âplus I could win tickets for some thing so I would that as wellâ
3rd interview Paul Kelsey he said that âit apples to aspiring middle upper classâ
3rd interview Paul Kelsey he said that âthe way it look as youâve called it smooth classicâ
3rd interview Paul Kelsey he said that âit looks very classic âŚâŚ people are dressed very mature and olderâ
3rd interview Paul Kelsey he said that âits defiantly a life style magazine if you purchasing this you would find fashion items
âŚ. Jurally âŚ. Social pagesâ
This is the reaction I was going for I was look to make a very smart magazine that ages are older and the class is middle
upper class and that it also stands out to you from the shelves.
7. The denotation of the software used to construct the media product entitled âsmooth
classicâ was so the I used was adobe Photoshop cs4 but some of the main tools that I
used where text box, shape tool, faded rubber and the paint tool.
In order for this product to look fit for purpose and appeal to the target audience, I decided
to create a sophisticated look using the darker colours and the faded tool it helped me
because of the rich colours.
What have you learnt about technologies from
the process of constructing this product?

14. Looking back at your Preliminary
task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?I feel that, having completed the preliminary task and
learning about the demands of this production
process, I have learnt time keeping is essential in
completing the work to a high standard. Time
management is key to keeping it all running
smoothly to a high level. Also by doing a
preliminary task it allowed me to get use to how to
use Photoshop and as I have never used it before I
got the hang of it doing one before, rather then
going straight into the main task. There is evidence
of progression that I feel particularly demonstrates
how I met the demands of the production process,
for example in comparison, my preliminary task
doesn'tât look as well done as my main task
because I developed my learning from doing the
preliminary task so I progressed as it got to the end
of the music magazine. The image is right which is
what I had used for my production task. They both
use similar font with the head line but from what I
have learnt is how to do the fade and adding more
pictures and cropping them, also I made sure they
