Shadow IT - the commissioning and sourcing of core IT products and services by departments other than IT - has been used across organisations for some time, but it is only now that IT decision makers are beginning to fully appreciate the extent of it. It is a way of working that is increasingly becoming the norm for business departments, who are independently deploying solutions with increasing frequency, despite the risks that may be involved.
IT departments must now adapt if they want to retain some element of control over the way technology is utilised within their organisations. We surveyed 200 business decision makers in organisations with more than 1,000 employees, in both the UK and the US.

The 2022 CIO Survey Summary Report provides insight into the priorities, challenges, and opportunities facing IT leaders in the consumer products, retail, and life sciences industries this year. Businesses across the world continue to face talent and labor shortages as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and companies within the tech industry are no different. These shortages, combined with changes to the “normal” workplace environment, have resulted in many companies rethinking and assessing their current and future challenges, opportunities, and priorities within their IT departments. In late 2021, Clarkston Consulting conducted a CIO Market Study, aiming to better understand the current priorities and challenges of upper or C-Suite level IT professionals (CIO/CISO/CTO/VP) at large companies ($350M+ revenue) in the retail, CPG, manufacturing, or life science industries. The four key objectives for the 2022 CIO Survey were to:
Understand the overall relationship between IT and other departments within the company.
Understand current IT budget distribution, technologies/platforms used, and sources for technology-specific learning and development.
Identify attributes that are important in selecting outsourcing or managed services partners, a professional services provider, or a technology platform/vendor.
Determine priorities for the coming year and understand how COVID-19 has changed priorities in recent years.
Market Study Results
Through this CIO Market Study, Clarkston was able to gain valuable insight on the current status and perceptions of IT departments, including budget, ERP usage, investments, outsourced activities, and department health; department expectations, priorities, and plans for the upcoming year; and important attributes in outsourcing and managed services, among other key findings.
The results of this survey provide a detailed view of many of the challenges that IT departments across the consumer products, retail, and life sciences industries continue to face, particularly as they navigate the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the workplace.
Navigating IT Complexity - Research report by IDGShoreTel
The primary objective of this research program is to explore IT decision makers’ attitudes toward and acceptance of technology complexity with a focus on IP telephony solutions. More specifically, the survey was designed to identify the extent to which companies are struggling with IT complexity as a macro issue, the perceived contributors to IT
complexity, adoption of IP telephony, and attitudes/experiences regarding complexity in IP telephony solutions.
The research was conducted online among the CIO and Network World audiences between September 14, 2010 and October 4, 2010. Respondents were screened for title (IT manager and above or LOB executive), core job responsibilities (strategic focus), company size of 50 or more employees, and for the implementation or planned implementation of IT telephony solutions. A total of 324 qualified respondents are represented in this summary; 186 respondents are members of the CIO audience, 138 respondents are members of the Network World audience.

Given the breadth and pace of innovation, all signs point to a widening skills gap. This will put further pressure on organizations of all sizes to rethink their workforce strategies. While the notion of a skills gap is a seemingly straightforward concept, below the surface, there are many nuances to the story. This CompTIA research report explores these issues, setting the stage for approaches to tackling the IT skills gap.
If you thought that the “war room” was a thing of the past—it turns out, you’re wrong. The digital war room is on the rise. It’s growing in both size and relevance, including critical support for DevOps and growing support for areas such as SecOps and IoT.

Taking the Pulse of IT Security for 2019: Results from Syncsort's Security Su...Precisely
In 2018 we saw multiple security regulations become effective – most notably the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As a result, businesses already grappling with increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity attacks now must contend with additional regulatory requirements.
To check the pulse of IT teams managing security, Syncsort surveyed over 300 IT professionals on the state of security in their organization – and it's not surprising that the "growing complexity of regulations" was ranked as the #1 security challenge for 42% of the respondents in the year ahead.
Concerningly, 45% of the respondents reported that their organization had experienced a security breach in 2018 and the confidence reported by respondents did not align with their ability to prevent breaches and meet Service Level Agreements.
Hear from Syncsort’s security experts to learn what the survey revealed about:
• Security priorities and challenges for 2019
• Reported breaches and whether survey respondents met their breach response metrics
• Initiatives for strengthening security and achieving compliance in 2019
In CompTIA's research on the state of IT skills gap, 68% of IT firms report having a "very challenging" time finding new staff. They are hiring, with 33% saying they are understaffed and another 42% saying they are fully staffed but want to hire more in order to expand. How are today's IT skills matching up to industry's workforce needs?

commonly sourced/commissioned products and services are application software (52%) and
servers (47%). Close to two fifths also source or commission IT security software/hardware
(39%) and application development (38%) (page 7).
Of those respondents in departments where “shadow IT” is happening, 99% have been doing
this for six months or more, with around two thirds (67%) doing so for more than two years
(page 5). Around seven in ten (71%) of these respondents also expect their involvement with
“shadow IT” to increase in the next two years, with only 4% expecting this to slightly decrease
(page 7).
Around a third (32%) of respondents whose departments are not currently engaging in
“shadow IT” report that other departments in their organisation are doing so. For those
where it is also not happening in other departments in their organisation, over one in ten
(13%) expect “shadow IT” to happen in their organisation in the near future (page 12).
For respondents whose own departments are not currently participating in “shadow IT” but
have other departments in their organisation who are, or who expect “shadow IT” to happen
in their organisation in the near future, around six in ten (59%) might adopt “shadow IT” in
their department in the next two years, and a quarter (25%) say this will happen (page 13).
Almost two in five surveyed business decision-makers from departments engaging in
“shadow IT” report that the main people driving this in their department is the head of the
department (38%) or other senior members of staff (38%) (page 10). Over half (55%) of
respondents from organisations where “shadow IT” is occurring also report that the majority
of other departments in their organisation are engaging in “shadow IT” (page 11).
Client services and relationship management (34%) and operations (34%) are the two
departments where respondents in organisations engaging in “shadow IT” report that it is
most commonly happening (page 15).
Client services and relationship management (41%) and operations (34%) are also the
departments most expected to engage in “shadow IT” by those respondents in departments
where it is not happening right now but is (or is likely to) in the organisation (page 21).
Although client services and operations are the departments where “shadow IT” is most likely
to be happening, respondents in organisations where some departments, including their
own, are engaging in “shadow IT” report that business direction and strategy (36%) and
finance (27%) are the departments where “shadow IT” is most prevalent (page 18).

3. Why is “shadow IT” happening?
Around six in ten surveyed business decision-makers agree that “shadow IT” can free up the
IT department’s time (61%) and allow business departments to be more productive (57%)
and efficient (57%). Fewer than four in ten (36%) agree that organisations should restrict
“shadow IT” and only 34% agree that “shadow IT” poses a risk to the organisation’s IT security
(page 24).
Almost six in ten (57%) respondents in departments where “shadow IT” is already occurring
report that one of the main reasons that their department chooses to commission and
source IT products and services outside of the IT department is because it is quicker, and
48% say that they are more likely to be able to get the products and services they actually
need and want. Around two in five feel that “shadow IT” is easier (41%) and feel that they
understand their own IT needs better than the IT department does (41%) (page 6).
Mirroring this, around two thirds (63%) of respondents whose departments do not currently
engage in “shadow IT”, but expect to in the next two years, say that one of the main reasons
that they would commission and source core IT products and services outside the IT
department is because it would be quicker. Furthermore, over half feel that they would be
able to get the products and services they actually want (56%) and that they have a better
understanding of their individual IT needs than the IT department (52%) (page 14).
