2. Who listens to Indie music?
Who will read my magazine?
Indie music often attracts a fairly equal amount of both men and women, aged
primarily between 14-21. The lyrics associated with Indie music usually talk about
modern day social problems or being young and rebellious. In addition to this the
sound of Indie music tends to be chilled and quiet rhythmic.
Most Indie magazines are targeted at both genders between 16-21 years old. The
content of these magazines would be to inform, usually about concert dates,
breakthrough/upcoming bands and various other interesting articles that cover the
bands my audience listen to as this will be a main attraction as to why a person
will buy my magazine.
4. Artists
Band: The Propellers
Members: Max Davenport, Archie Davenport, Charlie
Simpson, Jimmy Goodwin, Will Wilkinson
Origin: Kent, England
The band made its name in january 2013, When their debut
EP was played on the radio (Midnight Kiss) and was
released as a single on the same day. After this they
received invitations to some of the Uk’s biggest known
festivals such as T in the park, and BST playing alongside
the Rolling Stones. The band then went quiet but then hit
back with a new music and broadened their scope by
moving onto spotify for online purchase.
6. Artist
Band: The Libertines
Members: Pete Doherty, John Hassall, Carl Barat, Gary
Powell
Origin: London ,England
The Libertines broke through into the spotlight in the early
2000’s. At first their mainstream success was limited however
after later releases their fan base grew and their commercial
success boomed. The band's music was often overshadowed
by the unfortunate decline of Pete Doherty’s Drug addiction
leading to the band's break up. The band members stayed
connected and in 2007 they produced song together however it
was not until 2010 that the band Officially reunited ahead of
Reading and Leeds festival.
8. Age?
My ideal target audience, although my questionnaire revealed that they were
mostly 14-17. I will aim my magazine at a much broader age range 16-24 as this
enables me to cover a more diverse range of topics in my magazine which would
not be appropriate with a younger audience (drinking/smoking) as a lot of the
coverage and messages conveyed in indie music is only understood by those of
an older age, however some younger people also still buy my magazine as Indie
music almost encourages a rebellious nature.
9. Interests?
My target audience will enjoy socialising with friends, generally loitering or walking
around to secluded areas (old railways) or if of age they may go to the pub or a
club however they will be underground or quite grungy and retro like clubs as this
is where Indie music is commonly played. In addition to this they may also like
going to festivals (older) such as reading or Glastonbury if they can afford it. As
previously mentioned the rebellious nature of fans influenced by Indie music may
drink and/or smoke. In addition to this my target audience, primarily then males
will enjoy skateboarding at their local skate park.
10. Gender
My questionnaire shows an even between males and females which suggests that
I should aim my magazine at both males and females equally however it seems to
be the case that I should direct my magazine more at males as NME sells 66% of
their magazines to men, compared 34% of women which I found surprising, in
addition to this point I feel as though embrace the attitudes and culture of Indie
music more and so my magazine should appeal more to them.
11. Lifestyle
The average member of my target audience would still be young and so would
most likely be living at home with their parents. In addition to this they may be
employed and have a part-time job which means they have an income but also
have a lot of spare time when not in education, so they will most likely be out
socialising a lot of at gigs seeing their favourite bands live. They also live in quite
retro but expensive housing as their parents occupation would be of a comfortable
salary however, my audience may be found in older more rundown areas but are
still crawling with activities, shops and people (Digbeth, Birmingham). My target
audience could easily be picked out amongst the majority of modern day youths
and young adults on the streets due to their alternative and quite noticeable
clothing.
