2. History of Pop
Pop music is a genre of music that originated in the United
States during the 1950’s. The genre came about after deriving
from rock and roll. The terms "popular music" and "pop music"
are often used interchangeably, even though the former is a
description of music, which is popular (and can include any
style). Pop is a genre that gets it elements from many different
other genres. These genres include urban, dance, rock, Latin and
country.
3. Example of a pop magazine
This is an example of a Billboard front
cover. It is for a very mature audience
and this aimed at adults aged 25.
According to the media pack of
Billboard. Their demographic is for
adults both female and male and try to
cater to both genders in all of their
magazines. They pride themselves in
being the “best in music”. They use
social media to reach a wide audience
and this is one of the ways they get to
their audience. The magazine covers a
wide range of topic. These topics
include billboard, radio and top 20. This
magazine look very different to other
pop magazines because it looks dark
and dull but this is because it is
targeting its audience at a completely
different age group.
4. Subgenres of Pop
• Bubblegum pop
• Baroque pop
• Dance-pop
• Christian Pop
• Soundtrack
• Power pop
• Operatic Pop
• Europop
• Sophisti-pop
• Synthpop
• Space age pop
• Sunshine pop
• Traditional pop
• Teen pop
• Electropop
5. Example of a pop magazine
This is a very conventional pop magazine and
has the target audience we would expect for
a magazine of this genre. This magazine has
an average of 12 year old girls and this is why
there is bright and bold colouring. They don’t
use social media to reach their audience
because they are under the age of being able
to have the sorts of sites they would use.
They publish on paper and on a website.
They pride themselves as being biggest
selling teen lifestyle magazine on the market.
This means, they focus on different things as
well as pop. They focus on fashion and
beauty as well as music. Magazines like this
would include free items including beauty
products and posters. The magazine tries to
come across as “We’re the friend our readers
can rely on to give them confidence, make
them laugh, and share all the juiciest gossip”.
6. Analysis of Bubble and Teen pop
Bubble pop is a sub-genre of pop that is produced to appeal to
preteens and teens. It has originated from the United States in
the late 1960’s. Teen pop is very similar to Bubble pop as they
are both produced to appeal to a young preteen and teen
audience. It has an earlier origination date between 1940 in the
United States. From researching into each of the subgenres, my
magazine will follow the convention of teen pop and bubblegum
pop. They are a mixture of some other genres and this will allow
me to make the magazine the way I want to. The magazine I will
create will follow the codes and conventions of these types of
magazines. Both these genres are published for preteens and
teens between the ages of 11-19.
My magazine will be aimed teenagers, of a slightly older age
group, so I will be incorporating elements from the different
magazines I have looked at.
7. Example of a teenage magazine
Although seventeen is not a music magazine,
it will allow me to see what a mature teenage
audience likes in their magazine. I can use the
layout of their front covers and stories for a
basic idea of the way my magazine should be.
Seventeen magazine has a average age of 16
year old female. This is the age in between the
other 2 magazines I have researched and will
allow me to use elements from all the
magazines to have a magazine that fulfills all
the conventions of pop but is aimed and
produced for a slightly older age group. They
have an idea of what the reader of seventeen
is like. This is “the Seventeen reader is involved
and passionate. From style to entertainment ,
her future and her community, she is fully
committed. She turns to Seventeen to her look
her best and succeed”.
8. Pop Artists
These link to the sort of artists that would
feature in my magazine. The age groups that
these artists appeal to would range from young
to older teenagers.
