Formal spelling assessments are usually done so that the teacher and
school can see how the student progressed throughout the year. These
tests will include:
- Achievement/ placement tests (to see the instructional level of the
students)
- Diagnostics tests ( assesses the words and skills the student’s have
learned.)
- Criterion-referenced tests ( used to pre test and post test to see
what the student has learned.)
These types of assessments are used to test the student’s basic
academic skills. The skills include in these tests are comprehension,
listening, and spelling. Achievement tests are used essentially to know
what the student already knows. The purpose of these tests are to:
- Assess the student’s level of competence
- Diagnose the student’s strengths and weakness
- Assign grades
- Curriculum evaluation

This type of assessment can also be called the end of level tests.
Teachers will use this type of assessment at the beginning of the school
year or as a post-test to show the student's achievement. These tests
are intended to measure a specific topic or knowledge and skills. These
types of tests are usually administered in the multiple choice format.
This can be difficult for students who become distracted easily. The
teacher may need to sit with those students with disabilities and read
each question to them.
Informal spelling assessments is a type of test that the teacher will use
with a child to see where they are at in their literacy concepts. These
include:
- Dictated spelling tests
- Informal spelling inventory
- Curriculum-based measurement
- Spelling challenges

Cues used by writers to spell accurately:
- Phonics or sounding out the words
- Visual cues
- Asks themselves if the word looks like it is spelled correctly
- Writer can used high-frequency words
Students must be able to use these cues to become a successful speller.
Spelling is a vital piece of being a writer. If they are able to use these
cues they are more apt to becoming a good speller and a successful
writer.
This is an important skill that writers are to develop. As teachers it is
our goal to develop our students reading comprehension. Students
must be able to recognize and comprehended what they are reading
and writing. To be a good writer students must be successful spellers.
