Creating and Using an LMS
Purpose of an LMS
 Definition of a LMS: Coursework that is available online.
 We are all very understanding of what a LMS is. We work on a LMS
for this class. Now how could we use this to benefit our special
education classes?
 In a special education classroom this type of program could be very
beneficial due to the fact that you can adjust the work for each
student.
 I also like the fact that the teacher can create the lessons and make
them available when they feel the student is ready to move on. This
means that we could simply have the student repeat the lessons until
they show complete understanding of the information.
 The idea that the teacher can create the lessons beforehand and have
the ability to have some assignments graded automatically will help
reduce time grading tests and the ability to work with students more.

Merits of an LMS
 Just as many of us have understood by using Canvas there is
convenience of working on your own time. When considering a special
education classroom all students must work every day but they are
allowed to work at home if needed.
 For the teacher, it is very beneficial in knowing that you can create the
lessons ahead of time and have them saved on your computer. This also
allows you to create quizzes that can be graded automatically.
 When considering having more time to work with students and not
grading quizzes I’m not sure how no one can not like this system.
 In my class I would prefer having both a LMS as well as a traditional
curriculum because that would allow me to have the convenience of the
regular online courses as well as the personal and face to face aspects of
the regular classroom.

Pitfalls of an LMS
 A LMS limits a face to face learning environment.
 When a student does not understand the information they may not
know until it comes to the test.
 There is no way to completely know if a student understands the
information and concepts that are trying to be taught.
 The fact that the teacher has the information already online can lead to
the teacher relying on the information they already have available. The
teacher can sometimes forget that they are the teacher and stull have to
continue to teach.
Instructional Properties
 In the courses I am currently taking I like the aspect of having the
information available right away at the beginning of the week and I can
learn at my pace.
 The idea of having the ability to have my students work on certain
portions of the lesson at certain ties helps me understand that they are
going to be working everyday, they will have all the information
available for them to learn the lesson, and then they will be learning
what I want them to learn in the order I want them to learn it.
 In a special education classroom setting I do not want my students to
have the ability to look ahead and get different ideas in their minds
other than those of the actual lesson.
 Having the ability to link in information that will lead the students to
addition pages that mat give them insight makes teaching and
exploring easy.
Authentic Learning and the LMS
Authentic learning can be beneficial in an LMS system because the
system is so independently driven that gives the teacher a better idea of
what the student is capable of doing. The students will build their
assignments within the course, they will be in one place which makes it
easier for the student and the teacher to access the information and make
it easier for them to be assessed.
A good example of using the assessment is in this class. We use the LMS
system in here and we use these projects as a means to show our
knowledge and our teacher can use them as an authentic assessment tool.
21st Century Learning and LMS
I believe that LMS is going to become a major part of the 21st century
learning system. It provides students with a new way of learning. Some
may like it and some may not. This should not be used as a replacement
for instruction but it can be used as an enhancement to the teachers
lesson and allow the students a new way to complete their lessons. This
new way may make things easier for students, making information easier
to understand. I believe that students would like the idea of having all the
information available to them at the beginning of each week and them
being able to work at their own pace throughout the week to complete the
tasks.
Components of LMS
The LMS is useful because it assists students in the learning
process and gives the students the ability to learn at their own pace
and work on their work their own way.
It allows the teacher to teach the students what they need while
allowing the students to absorb the information at their own pace.
The students can use outside resources to find their information
makes an LMS a learning tool for teachers as well as students. The
students may come across something the teacher hasn’t seen yet.
