Why Bring Media into the Classroom? A Vision of Students Today Michael Wesch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGCJ46vyR9o
Combating the ‘Crisis of Significance’ Media in education now includes: mapping for Geography, Social Studies video creation for Language Arts, History, Applied Sciences Blogging or class wikis for any subject Google documents, for sharing files, information, research findings, Social media for Marketing, Communications, Business Media is helping education to become more ‘integrated’… media is the tool of choice for the ‘millennium generation’ offers high level synthesis and analysis Knowing how to present your work is an important part of the post secondary experience
What is media literacy? Media Literacy includes: Basic Technical Proficancy (although media literacy goes way beyond this) Knowing how to Search and Validate Information online Online Safety and Privacy Evaluating Authenticity, point of view Thinking Critically Rights and Responsibilities Digital Copyright
The 5 key questions of Media Literacy Who sent this message? (knowing who the author is) What techniques are used to attract my attention? How might other people understand this message differently from me? What values, lifestyles are represented in or omitted from this message? (point of view) Why was this message sent? (all media messages are organized to gain influence)
Why is media literacy important? If we understand how media works: We can decode the messages that are constantly being bombarded at us in our media saturated world. We can create media for our own needs; to express ourselves, to document an event or situation, to inform others. We can feel more connected by sharing media with others and creating community.
