Although initially designed for running on-premises against HDFS-stored data, Impala can also run on public clouds and access data stored in various storage engines such as object stores (e.g. AWS S3), Apache Kudu and HBase. A Thorough Comparison of Delta Lake, Iceberg and HudiDatabricks

KafkaConsumer - Decoupling Consumption and Processing for Better Resource Uti...confluent
When working with KafkaConsumer, we usually employ single thread both for reading and processing of messages. KafkaConsumer is not thread-safe, so using single thread fits in well. Downside of this approach is that you are limited to single thread for processing messages.
By decoupling consumption and processing, we can achieve processing parallelization with single consumer and get the most out of multi-core CPU architectures available today. While this can be very useful in certain use-case scenarios, it's not trivial to implement.
How do we use multiple threads with KafkaConsumer which is not thread safe? How do we react to consumer group rebalancing? Can we get desired processing and ordering guarantees? In this talk we 'll try to answer these questions and explore challenges we face on our path.

Apache Hudi is a data lake platform, that provides streaming primitives (upserts/deletes/change streams) on top of data lake storage. Hudi powers very large data lakes at Uber, Robinhood and other companies, while being pre-installed on four major cloud platforms.
Hudi supports exactly-once, near real-time data ingestion from Apache Kafka to cloud storage, which is typically used in-place of a S3/HDFS sink connector to gain transactions and mutability. While this approach is scalable and battle-tested, it can only ingest data in mini batches, leading to lower data freshness. In this talk, we introduce a Kafka Connect Sink Connector for Apache Hudi, which writes data straight into Hudi's log format, making the data immediately queryable, while Hudi's table services like indexing, compaction, clustering work behind the scenes, to further re-organize for better query performance.

The Parquet Format and Performance Optimization OpportunitiesDatabricks
The Parquet format is one of the most widely used columnar storage formats in the Spark ecosystem. Given that I/O is expensive and that the storage layer is the entry point for any query execution, understanding the intricacies of your storage format is important for optimizing your workloads.
As an introduction, we will provide context around the format, covering the basics of structured data formats and the underlying physical data storage model alternatives (row-wise, columnar and hybrid). Given this context, we will dive deeper into specifics of the Parquet format: representation on disk, physical data organization (row-groups, column-chunks and pages) and encoding schemes. Now equipped with sufficient background knowledge, we will discuss several performance optimization opportunities with respect to the format: dictionary encoding, page compression, predicate pushdown (min/max skipping), dictionary filtering and partitioning schemes. We will learn how to combat the evil that is ‘many small files’, and will discuss the open-source Delta Lake format in relation to this and Parquet in general.
This talk serves both as an approachable refresher on columnar storage as well as a guide on how to leverage the Parquet format for speeding up analytical workloads in Spark using tangible tips and tricks.

Tame the small files problem and optimize data layout for streaming ingestion...Flink Forward

In modern data platform architectures, stream processing engines such as Apache Flink are used to ingest continuous streams of data into data lakes such as Apache Iceberg. Streaming ingestion to iceberg tables can suffer by two problems (1) small files problem that can hurt read performance (2) poor data clustering that can make file pruning less effective. To address those two problems, we propose adding a shuffling stage to the Flink Iceberg streaming writer. The shuffling stage can intelligently group data via bin packing or range partition. This can reduce the number of concurrent files that every task writes. It can also improve data clustering. In this talk, we will explain the motivations in details and dive into the design of the shuffling stage. We will also share the evaluation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of smart shuffling.

Simplifying Hadoop with RecordService, A Secure and Unified Data Access Path ...Cloudera, Inc.
SFHUG presentation from February 2, 2016. One of the key values of the Hadoop ecosystem is its flexibility. There is a myriad of components that make up this ecosystem, allowing Hadoop to tackle otherwise intractable problems. However, having so many components provides a significant integration, implementation, and usability burden. Features that ought to work in all the components often require sizable per-component effort to ensure correctness across the stack.
Lenni Kuff explores RecordService, a new solution to this problem that provides an API to read data from Hadoop storage managers and return them as canonical records. This eliminates the need for components to support individual file formats, handle security, perform auditing, and implement sophisticated IO scheduling and other common processing that is at the bottom of any computation.
Lenni discusses the architecture of the service and the integration work done for MapReduce and Spark. Many existing applications on those frameworks can take advantage of the service with little to no modification. Lenni demonstrates how this provides fine grain (column level and row level) security, through Sentry integration, and improves performance for existing MapReduce and Spark applications by up to 5×. Lenni concludes by discussing how this architecture can enable significant future improvements to the Hadoop ecosystem.
About the speaker: Lenni Kuff is an engineering manager at Cloudera. Before joining Cloudera, he worked at Microsoft on a number of projects including SQL Server storage engine, SQL Azure, and Hadoop on Azure. Lenni graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in computer science and computer engineering.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.
