In regards to the Mueller Lyer illusion, the textbook mentions how Rivers stated that most English saw

decided to ask 3 close friends of mine that are typical Americans. All but one was fooled by this

It is well known that exercise and physical activity have myriad positive effects and benefits on a
person s physical health. A similar concept to think about is the relationship between physical activity
and mental health, specifically academic performance. Through my research of studies, trials, and
reviews I believe that physical activity has a positive effect on academic performance, leading to
higher grade point averages, achievement in post compulsory education, and learning. To look at the
effects of physical activity on academic performance, researchers Kari, Pehkonen, Nen, Raitakari, and
Tammelin conducted a longitudinal study entitled, Longitudinal Associations between Physical
Activity and Educational Outcomes, examining physical activity performed in leisure time outside of
school affected academic achievement throughout basic education and education obtained in
adulthood. The study looked at Finnish male and female children ages 12 and 15, and continued
collecting data until the subjects reached their 40s. The participants self reported their physical activity
in overall leisure time outside school hours, participation in sports club training sessions, and

Before taking this course, I used to just sing my songs, but never used to write them down.

the importance of having a strong premise. I found this very useful because then you have an idea of
what your song is going to be about. You start thinking of emotion and storyline you want to write in

The Fisher King is a complex movie that follows a narcissistic radio host named Jack Lucas and a
homeless man named Parry. Throughout the movie, I frequently felt overwhelmed by the complex
nature of both Jack and Parry s behavior. Although their behaviors are very different, both characters
are complex individual s that are often tough to follow. The movie portrays Jack s narcissistic
personality disorder, as well as depression and illustrates the tolling effect depression has on an
individual, especially after feeling on top of the world. Additionally, the movie illustrates Parry s
PTSD and schizophrenia as an utterly chaotic, overwhelming and delusional existence. Although some
people with schizophrenia can live seemingly normal lives, the movie accurately displays the
overwhelming nature of schizophrenia for a person who is not only homeless and off medication but

Schizophrenia in itself seems to be tolling enough on an individual, but without medication or a home,
it seems like a near impossible illness to manage. In the article, To Be a Person with Schizophrenia,
the author illustrates the illness as, Imagine turning on five television sets, full volume, tuned to five
different channels and trying to follow the thread of one show. Additionally, the author writes, I have
trouble understanding and responding to people. I hear words, but they don t make any sense.
Although Parry s traits seem dramatized compared to these, the movie does an excellent job at
portraying the total confusion and disorientation a person with schizophrenia struggles

Blues Music In Sterling Brown s Ma Rainey
In Sterling Brown s Ma Rainey, Brown describes the significance of blues music in rural black
culture. Using dialect and rhythm, Brown manages to show the way blues music reaches its intended
audience without breaking from the language said audience would use to describe this. In this way,
Brown creates a poem which does not simply describe its subject, but celebrates it fully, and
associates itself not with white literature describing black Americans but with what could be called

The blues singer in Ma Rainey has an almost mystical quality to her as she manages to soothe
everyone for miles aroun (Brown, Stanza I, line 4) with her songs. Hughes mentions the richness jazz
and blues add to lower class black culture, and how the middle and upper class black Americans tend
to turn away from blues as a signifier of the race they wish to leave behind. Brown celebrates blues as
a way of connecting people, and of giving them something to hold onto as they battle the hardships
associated with not being white in America. While those who wish to be white spurn blues music as
too black, Brown proves in his poem that blues is an essential way of bringing people together. He
paints a picture of its immense impact when he describes the listeners crying together as Ma Rainey
sings. This, in turn, serves as a call to other black artists to stop trying to break away from their race,
as it invokes a sense of belonging. All the people who come watch Ma Rainey sing belong to a
community of rural black Americans, and from this community they do face adversity, yet scenes like
the one described in Ma Rainey show that there is also a positive takeaway from being a part of it. In
the earlier mentioned segment from the third stanza, Brown s use of direct address sets up Ma Rainey
as an omniscient, almost godlike figure. The speaker, and presumably the reader included in the
speaker s us, can look to her for solace amidst their struggle. Brown implies that those who look to
their own culture may find meaning in it, which speaks to Hughes invocation for artists to Let the
blare of Negro jazz bands and the bellowing voice of Bessie Smith singing the Blues penetrate the
closed ears of the colored near intellectuals until they listen and perhaps understand,

In the film The Color Purple , segregation plays an important role
and the differences between black people and white people are shown
through race and life. The Color Purple focuses on the lives of several
African American women who are faced with abuse, violence, and cruelty.
The fim is set in Macon County Georgia and there are two main
characters Celie and her sister Nettie. Celie is the character the movie is
centered around and she is also the film s narrator. The story is based on
Celie s life and the many different issues along the way that she has
encountered such as being raped by her father over and over again, abused by

Celie was beaten and raped so much that
she become so used to not fighting back or even crying. Celie was always a
religious person and someone who refused to lose faith even through all the
violent things she had endured. She always talks to God asking him to give her
strength. From the moment Celie walks into Mister s house she is expected to
clean, cook, raise his kids, and have sex with him whenever he chooses.
Along the way Celie meets two women who support her and constantly
remind her that she is worth more than she thinks and that she does not deserve
the live that she is living with Albert. As more time passes by Celie finally
begins to realize her self that she does not have to continue living her life in

constant fear and violence and she builds the courage to leave Albert. From
there on everything starts to come together for Celie and her loved ones while
Albert looses everything he has. Albert eventually realizes how cruel he has
treated Celie and what a terrible person he has been his whole life, he finally
does something to make Celie happy and he uses all the money he has saved to
bring Nettie back to reunite with Celie.
I enjoyed this film because it has a real story behind it and is something I
can relate to as a women and also can relate to the characters from the film.
