Hailing from tropical America, the genus Allamanda
contains 12 species of evergreen shrubs, including
both semi-climbing and upright types.
Members of the dogbane (Apocynaceae) family, these
luxuriant, colourful and flamboyant plants are the
epitome of a tropical shrub.
Popular for ornamental use in climates similar to their native habitat, these plants
can also be grown in sheltered areas or conservatories in cooler climates. They also
make colourful indoor pot plant subjects in cooler climates.
The genus is named for an eighteenth-century Swiss botanist
Frédéric Allamand.

3. Allamandas can be different in shape and growth
habit.
From a dwarf shrub suitable for borders to full-size shrubs and vigorous
vines that can cover a fence with a beautiful
blooming mass within 1-2 seasons.
There are many plants closely related to Allamanda
that have similar looking flowers. One of those is the
Mandevilla.
All these plants have milky sap and all parts of them
are poisonous - do not eat or chew them, and
educate your kids about these plants' properties.
However, house pets and other animals are not in danger. These plants are
harmless for them.

4. Care and Cultivation
As a rule, allamandas are frost-tender plants, best
suited to a subtropical or tropical climate, though
they can be grown in very sheltered areas in cooler
zones.
When growing under similar climate conditions to
their native habitat, they should be planted in a
position in full sun.
The combination of rich well-drained soil and plenty of summer moisture will
promote a prolific flower display over a long flowering season.
Propagation is usually by half-hardened cuttings.

5. Pruning
Prune your allamanda shrub down to the desired height.
These shrubs grow quite quickly and without proper pruning
allamandas rapidly become overgrown and look bulky.
Cut out all damaged, dead or dying branches. Prune out any stems that
rub against or cross another stem. This will help prevent injuries that
can allow pathogens to enter the plant tissue.

Large violet flowers and glossy leaves make for

8. Allamanda x Alba (Blanca)
Very attractive ever-blooming allamanda has large, fragrant
white trumpet-like flowers. This colour is unusual for
allamandas.
Leaves are slightly smaller than other allamanda varieties.
In areas where there is seasonal change, keep fairly dry during
winter and prune in spring before growth begins.
It may be desirable to prune annually in any case to control for
size.

A beautiful variety with delicate light cream flowers. An eye-

A tropical deeply twining vine with whorled leaves and large,
trumpet shaped flowers.
Prickly seed pods follow the flowers with winged seeds that fly

Pretty violet-shaded flowers are trumpet-shaped, very showy
and appear all year in consistently warm climates.
They require full sun and fertile, well-drained, acidic soil for
best growth. Though somewhat drought tolerant, they look and
grow best with evenly moist conditions.
Whether grown as a vine or trained as a shrub, purple
allamanda makes a wonderful, ever-blooming specimen plant.
