The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Network (ARDS Net) conducted a multicenter, randomized trial comparing traditional ventilation treatment (V T = 12 mL/kg, P Plat  50 cm H 2 O) vs. lower tidal volumes (V T = 6 mL/kg, P Plat 30 cm H 2 O) in patients with ARDS. The trial was stopped early when the lower tidal volume group experienced significantly lower mortality (P=0.007). As shown on this slide, the proportion of patients who were breathing without assistance by day 28 (65.7% vs 55.0%) was statistically significant (P&lt;0.001) in favor of ventilation with lower tidal volumes.
